YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU Basketball coverage

I thought the same thing...we're 2 weeks away from the season with a game against Pitt & you'd think it was summer.  There was definitely a lot more excitement and promos last year.

Pretty stout non-conference schedule shaping up...WVU, Pitt & now OSU along with Western Michigan

I had a feeling Ferguson would transfer.  I really liked him and thought maybe he fit Calhoun's system, but I think he seemed discouraged with his playing time just looking at his expressions and body language at times.

Hartfield is shocking, but I think he just doesn't fit the system.  He really struggled down the stretch after putting up a lot of points early in the season.  May have been tired.

Both Ferguson and Hartfield seemed like really good guys.  Hate to see them go but I think both may flourish elsewhere.

Brown really didn't get any playing time in league play, and like someone else said he may be more of a division II player.

Everyone seemed to lock in on Cam this year and made it tough for him a lot of nights and as you said we struggled at times to find someone else to score the ball.  Just too much inconsistent play.  Braun had some really good games, but had a lot of bad nights as well.

For most of the year I didn't think Anabir was a Division I caliber player, but he seemed to really improve late in the year.  I thought Ferguson would have had a better season.  He shows flashes at times where he's good on defense and can drive the ball and score, but seemed to really struggle shooting the ball.  He seems like one that I wonder if he'll return.

I liked what I saw from Akuchie early in the season, but then really didn't get much playing time, but I thought he ended the season strong.  Jacob Brown got playing time in non-conference play then really nothing in league play.   I hope Tyree is back next year.  He seems like he can take over a game, but has to get his stamina level up and needs to control his emotions.

I agree. Tough to end his career the way it went & 2 straight tough losses. He couldn't find his shot last night but found ways to contribute & battled to the end. He got beat to hell last night... couldn't believe all the no calls. Announcers even commented.

A disappointing loss that summed up the season.  To get to the line 27 times and make only 12 shots is just unacceptable.  To shoot 24 more shots against a team like Cleveland State at home on Senior Night with a great crowd and to lose is just hard to fathom.

Even though there were a lot of bad losses in non-conference play, after the 3-0 start in league play I was hopeful.  There was a lot of energy and the guys were playing hard and with a lot of emotion.  The league was down this year & I thought we had the opportunity to battle for the 4-6 seeds.

I really never thought YSU would go 3-12 over the next 15 losing to Detroit twice and CSU at home and end up at the 9 seed.  I go back to that first Detroit game when we were sitting at 3-1 and somehow managed to lose then lost a tough game to Wright State that was there for the taking.  It just seemed like after that point something was lost.

I think we do comeback and beat CSU Friday, but the game against NKU will be a tall task.

Hopefully the guys coming back next year can improve and we can get some scorers and guys that can knock down FT.  I like what we have in Covington and Naz.  Naz is a beast rebounding, but really struggled finishing plays off inside and shooting the ball.  Covington plays so hard & seems to be very intelligent.  Braun is just so inconsistent.  There's games he can look tremendous then just not even be a factor the next.  He seemed to really struggle down the stretch.  Hopefully Tyree can get his stamina up and can give us more mins next year.  At times he looks unstoppable.  Would like to see Devin be a little more consistent and improve finishing plays and his FT shooting.

Great points mudclod.   I think the area that we need to improve in going forward is some interior presence.   We need a rim protector and on offense some one who is a threat that teams might have bring a double which open up the perimeter.  Naz is playing his a$$ off down there but we need some more beef.

Do you think Oakland hates us between last night and last season in the tournament ?  Hopefully coach can get two more league wins to get to eight.   Slocum's best year was 10 in his 12 years as coach.   One could argue that the league is easier than years past.

Also, there were only 16 games for several of Slocum's seasons.

I was really hoping we could get a signature win this year.  It was the type of game that a good team finds a way to win, and we needed that.  Down 7 with 2:30 to go and to finish on a 9-0 run to beat Oakland is impressive.  Despite getting killed on the glass last night, YSU did a great job turning Oakland over, which kept us in the game.  We also played pretty smart and didn't turn the ball over.

It's great to see Cam playing so well again...sure didn't want  to see him end his YSU career like it was going at times early in the year.  He's playing with confidence and looks like he's having fun.  He's been damn near perfect from the foul line against the league shooting 30-32 and had that one rim out last night.

Covington was amazing last night.  He had a steal, took a charge, and the block at the end before the winning bucket.  He impresses me so much in his press conferences...seems very intelligent and speaks so well.  It's hard to believe he's a freshman.  Going to be fun watch him progress in the coming years.

YSU's biggest weakness besides defense for the most part seems to be finishing strong inside and converting fast breaks.  I feel we've missed so many opportunities this year in both categories that has cost us a few games this year.  More often than not we're winning the turnover and rebounding battle, but not converting.

YSU really has a great opportunity now to finish the regular season strong with home games against Detroit and Cleveland State along with the road game against N. Kentucky, which will be tough.  Would be tremendous to end the regular season winning 4 of 5 to head into the conference.

I think we'll see if YSU is making progress if we can take care of business Friday night against Detroit.  Will probably be favored for only the 2nd time this year.  We should have never lost in Detroit and then followed that up with a tough loss at Wright State that we played well enough to win.  I thought that was a key juncture early in league play that started the tide going the other way.  We had opportunity to be at least 4-2 and a good opportunity at 5-1, but was instead 3-3 and lost all the momentum we had after starting 3-0.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU vs Milwaukee
« on: January 25, 2018, 10:18:13 PM »
Another game where YSU has its chances but went ice cold again down the stretch.  We kept battling back from 8 point deficits, but could never take control.  Missed a lot of good looks and layups.  Thought we had a chance at the end of the first half and had some turnovers and a missed a layup.  Just not going to win when Cam is off.  Shot only 32% and amazingly took 18 more shots & made 5 less.  Milwaukee was pathetic from the foul line.  Where was Tyree?  Looked like he wasn't even on the bench.

I'm wondering if there is  a health issue that results in Tyree's limited minutes.  I don't want to start a rumor and just thinking out loud but he has been a threat on both ends.
It's bizarre that he's sitting on the bench when we're in a close battle that could go our way.

Pretty sure Coach said in a press conference awhile back they got him tested and he checked out ok.

I agree with what you said...we could have come out of that swing 2-1 and worst case 1-2.  Lost focus in the Detroit game & played sluggish.  Really for the most part played well enough to win at Wright State, just couldn't buy a basket towards the end & with Cam struggling seemed to demoralize us.  We're simply not going to win when Cam struggles as bad as he has in several games this year.

And really I didn't think we played too bad against Oakland.  Neither Oakland, Detroit or Wright State were able to cover the spread.  Just would have been nice to come away 4-2 and head home with 2 winnable games.

I wondered about Tyree myself.  He's a mysterious player to me.  Sometimes he seems unstoppable and puts a lot of effort in, the next time he looks lost and winded.  Played a total of 13 mins in the Oakland & Wright States games with 0 points.  Anabir makes me nervous every time he touches the ball.  I'd honestly rather see Jacob Brown in.  At least he's a better shooter and bit more athletic.

I also wondered why Coach took out Cam in the Detroit game when he was lighting it up and same thing with Hartfield against Wright State.  I'm sure he was trying to get Hartfield a breather before the 4 min timeout, but I just hate to see that.  Someone else questioned the same thing to me about Cam in the Detroit game, and the announcers mentioned it about Hartfield in the Wright State game.

I thought we would win this one being up 10 or so a few times and about 7 with under 5 minutes left in the game.  But our old problems came back to get us.  Lack of size inside gave Detroit many offensive rebounds where they crashed the boards on offense and it rarely led to use getting break away points due to their selling out on the offensive boards. Also seems like our guys  are not in good rebounding position and seem to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also without an inside presence on offense our outside guys are guarded closely.  We settle for too many 3's and give up on penetrating and getting the ball inside. The turnovers in this game were unbelievable and many were not really forced and the foul shooting was poor. And the press led to many easy baskets by Detroit and I don't think we got enough steals to cover those easy baskets.  And we tired ourselves out with the press.  Not playing enough players to press that much.  I think the press is harder on us energy wise compared to the other team.

We are playing 2 freshman most of the time and they are growing so that is a plus.  Our basketball IQ is lacking for sure and we need more inside players who can play and are big enough to stand up to our opponent's bigs.

You hit the nail on the head. I really didn't think there was any way we could possibly lose that game until they took the lead then thought we were in trouble. Just a terrible loss

A ridiculous loss against a team YSU was clearly better than.  Detroit was missing 3 players too.  Terrible FT shooting again...8-17.  That was clearly the difference as Detroit was 19-26.  Just no excuse to lose a game like that heading into an unbeaten Wright State.  I thought it was poorly officiated game too.  Can't even figure out what the foul was at the end of the game.  Detroit made some crazy shots.  I thought the tip in by Naz for Detroit was a killer too.

1. First time 3-0 in conference play in 20 years.

2. We won the 50-50 ball tonight . Scrapped like crazy.

3. Bohannon  and Covington are playing like they're no longer freshmen.

4. Tyree was a bad man tonight.  Needs to check his emotions where it's positive for the team.

5. Cam and Hartfield played like true leaders.

6.Sandy Cohen for GB was a witch and his teammate Small was just as tough.  They should be decent in the Horizon.

I agree with this 100%.  We've really out-hustled and wanted it more than both Milwaukee & Green Bay, and it really got to both & frustrated them.  I thought YSU played pretty well the first half just couldn't get some shots too fall, but says a lot really to come back from a 10-point 2nd half deficit.

Honestly everyone is playing pretty well right now.  Cam & Braun have really stepped up, and as you said Naz & Covington certainly don't look like freshman.  It was good to see Tyree put in 24 minutes.  He impresses the hell out of me, but his emotions make me nervous.  Haygood had that problem a lot last year, but seems much better this year.  I'm just afraid Tyree is either going to go off some night and/or cost a game.  Ferguson didn't score but gave us some solid minutes with a pair of steals & assists.  Just couldn't get a could of those shots to fall.

Going to be a real test now with 3 on the road against Oakland, Detroit & Wright State.  Hopefully we can get at least one.  Would be in pretty impressive to be at least 4-2 coming back home against UIC & IUPUI.

Great effort & good win against a solid team.  I thought it pretty complete game other than the stretch in the first half when we lost a big lead as YSU just couldn't hit a bucket, but we closed out the half strong, then let them back in at the end before putting them away.  But like the CSU game on Monday, didn't panic & didn't let them gain control or the lead.   Both these games probably would have been losses earlier in the year.

Still some rookie mistakes, but Cam & Braun really stepped up tonight.  Thought Haygood played good defensively, he just couldn't find the touch on offense.  If he could have knocked down a couple of those bunnies they probably wouldn't have been able to make it a game.  It's good to see him and Braun nail their foul shots.  Tyree really impresses me.  Would sure be nice to get another 5-10 mins out of him.  I don't understand why Anabir won't shoot.  He seems awkward, but he does have size & seems like has opportunities at times to score the ball.

It goes back too to the last 2 games of making your foul shots & hitting some 3's and you give yourself an opportunity to win.  I really think we could have knocked off Indiana if we did the same.  If nothing else would have had the lead at half & been in it at the end.

After starting off 2-0 in the league, Green Bay has lost their last 2 including tonight at CSU.  Really have an opportunity here to go 3-0 with GB up next Saturday at home.
