YSU Penguin Athletics / Softball team eager to begin season

YOUNGSTOWN

It’s been a long and tough winter — even by Youngstown’s standards.

So you can’t exactly blame the Youngstown State softball team for dreaming of some sun and warmer days sometime soon. And they’re in luck, because the season starts Saturday with the Phoenix Leadoff Classic at Elon University in North Carolina.

Sun — check.

Warm weather — check.

Oh, and softball — check.

Head coach Brian Campbell said the team is excited to begin the season, his third at the helm of the Penguins, with the trip south.

“We’ll see dirt on Friday for the first time in months,” he said. And that’s not really a joke.

The Northeast Ohio climate has forced the Penguins to remain indoors to train. And while the Youngstown weather may be conducive to an actual penguin, it hasn’t been so kind to the softball team. Campbell said the team has trained and practiced as best they can with the weather. And a lot of extra time has been spent in the batting cages.

“Northern teams tend to hit better because they’ve been in the cages all winter,” he said. “I think there is a little bit of a disadvantage, obviously, for the northern teams over the southern teams that have been outside and on their fields for a while. But the northern teams are usually better hitting teams than the southern ones, so it’s almost a little bit of a reversal.”

Campbell said the Penguins, who finished last season with a record of 8-42, will have a more aggressive offense — one he hopes should be on full display at the tournament.

“I think we’ve worked on a lot this year, namely to be more aggressive offensively with baserunners on, try a few more hit and runs,” he said. “The difference between last year and this year is this team here has been working really hard. We’ve turned into a little bit more of an aggressive offense. In terms of the work ethic, they know that when we get down there we’re there to practice at first.”

So the team won’t be playing in the sand or soaking in the rays, but at least they won’t be stifled by the snow and ice of back home. Campbell said it does give a team somewhat of a mental vacation to play in an area with nicer weather.

“We’re going down when we’re used to seeing 15 or 16 degree days,” he said. “Down there, it’s like 50 or 60 degree days, so it’s going to be a warm front for us. I think the girls are excited to go down.”

The February games are a first for the Penguins under Campbell. In his first two years, the season began in March with the Rebel Games in Florida. Campbell said adding the games a month earlier should be helpful.

“It gives us that opportunity to get some games in and also takes away a couple weeks of actual practice,” he said. Sometimes practice is good. But when you’re consistently going over it, sometimes it’s better to get in and actually play those games and see what you can work on. Sometimes practice gets redundant.”

I never understood how we got him in the first place. He was very successful at SIU as the OC. Best of luck to him.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 1 dead, 1 critical, 10 wounded near YSU

I know this is not sports ...but this just infuriates me. Those three streets need to become part of campus, and the ytown police need to be granted authority. After this, I am sure the mayor will be willing to bring on the needed officers. I also want to tip my hat to Dr. Anderson. You know I was not in favor of her promotion, but she has been just terrific so far. This is just another example of how publicly involved she is.

Anyone know about this fraternity?

Police are investigating an early-morning shooting near the Youngstown State University campus that has left one man dead and several others wounded.

Jamail E.Johnson, 25, was killed early Sunday morning at a party at his Indiana Avenue home. According to YSU officials, he was a student at the university.

Another person shot at the same time is listed in critical condition.

Capt. Rod Foley, Youngstown police, said an unknown number of people attended an after hours party at 55 Indiana Ave. that lasted into the early-morning hours Sunday. He said an altercation between those at the party erupted leading to gunfire.

Foley said 12 people were shot during the exchange of gunfire. Ten of those wounded in the shooting are expected to fully recover. According to a campus alert issued this morning, six of the wounded were students and were treated at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

YSU spokesman Ron Cole said many of the students shot were members of a sanctioned YSU fraternity who lived in a private, off-campus house.

No arrests have been made, but Foley said police are speaking to witnesses and gathering information on what took place at the party before and during the shooting.

According to the university alert, "[YSU] Police Chief John Gocala reports that there is no threat to campus. As a precaution, YSU police has increased its presence on campus."

The statement also said YSU President Cynthia Anderson met at the hospital today with injured students and their families. Counselors and clergy will be made available on campus.

“I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family of the student who died in this tragic act of violence, and to ask everyone to keep him and the other students in their thoughts and prayers,” Anderson said in the alert to the campus community. “It is a sad day for the YSU family.”

In a statement subsequently released by YSU, Mayor Jay Williams said "The Youngstown Police Department is actively pursuing leads in this case. I am fully confident that they will identify, apprehend and bring to justice the individuals who are responsible."

Exciting finish in regulation. Not quite as exciting a finish to OT.

38-33 Guins at the half. Such a different YSU team. Very physical & aggressive on defense. Some poor shot selections have kept this one close. We should be up by about 10-15.  Nice job overall.

Here is a link with Bios, photos, videos for the 2011 Youngstown State University football recruits. We will continue to add interviews, other offers, and more. The links on the left are somewhat dated, but the recruits are quite accurate. I will try to add missing videos and photos as I can find them.

Let's see if it carries over to Valpo today.

Kendrick Perry's 3-pointer with 20.9 seconds remaining capped a Penguins comeback from 10 points down in the final 5:27 and was the final points in thrilling 62-60 victory over Butler on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center.

With 5:27 left in the contest, Butler built a 57-47 lead, but the Penguins were not about to back down.

Perry got the rally started with a 3-pointer and Ashen Ward's basket closed the deficit to 57-52 with 4:12 left. Matt Howard increased the Butler advantage to 60-52 but that was the final time the Bulldogs scored the rest of the contest.

Ward answered Howard's triple with one of his own at the 3:27 mark pulling the Guins within 60-55. Following two offensive rebounds, Ward cashed in from 14 feet bringing the Penguins within 60-57.

The offensive glass was key for the Penguins again when Damian Eagle grabbed a Blake Allen miss and his putback with 1:16 remaining brought YSU within 60-59.

Butler had an opportunity to increase the advantage, but Sheldon Mack missed a 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining.

Twenty seconds later, Vytas Sulskis found Perry who drained a step-back 3-pointer with 20.9 seconds putting the Guins on top 62-60.

Butler had a shot but Howard's shot from the paint was long and Eargle grabbed his nine board of the contest. With only two team fouls and just 6.7 seconds left, the Bulldogs were forced to foul quickly.

YSU had two chances at the free-throw line to close out the contest. Allen missed with 4.6 seconds left, but Howard threw the ball out of bounds just past midcourt.

Ward was fouled with 2.1 ticks left, but he missed the front end of the one-and-one and Mack grabbed the rebound. However his desparation attempt was well short.

For the game, YSU shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57), including a 50-percent effort in the second half. The Guins made seven 3-pointers on the night, all in the second half.

Butler shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) for the contest and went 9-of-24 from behind the arc.

With the win, YSU improves to 8-14 on the year and 2-10 in the Horizon League. Butler is now 14-9 and 6-5.

Eargle scored 16 points while Perry had 14 and Allen finished with 11. Mack led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

The first half featured six ties and three lead changes.

YSU built a 25-18 lead on a Blake Allen jumper with 3:21 left in the first half. However, the Bulldogs held the Guins scoreless the remained of the period pulling with three at the break thanks to basketballs by Mack and Andrew Smith.

Eargle had 10 points for YSU while Smith scored a team-high nine for Butler.

Butler jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but five straight Penguin points tied the contest at seven. From that point, neither team held more than a two-point lead until YSU reeled off seven straight points turning an 18-17 deficit into a 25-18 lead with 3:21 remaining.

The Penguins harassed the Bulldogs into 10 turnovers while committing just one. That lone turnover came on an offensive foul by Sulskis with 40 seconds left before halftime. Butler dominated the boards holding a 26-13 bulge on the glass. YSU shot 40.7 percent (11-of-27) compared to Butler's 32.3 percent (10-of-31). Both teams combined to go 1-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc.

The Penguins play host to Valparaiso on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.

Youngstown State rallies to beat Butler 62-60

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP)—Kendrick Perry nailed a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to lead Youngstown State over Butler 62-60 on Thursday night.

The win for the Penguins (8-14, 2-10 Horizon League) was their first against Butler since a 64-62 victory on Jan. 21, 2006. Youngstown State had lost 10 in a row against the Bulldogs.

The Penguins trailed 57-47 with 5:27 left to play, but a 12-3 run—led by seven points from Ashen Ward—cut the deficit to 60-59 with 1:16 on the clock. Perry hit the game-winner after Shelvin Mack missed a 3 with 39 seconds to go.

Mack finished with 18 points, Matt Howard added 12 and Andrew Smith 11 for Butler (14-9, 6-5), which shot 39.7 percent from the field (23 of 58).

Damian Eargle had 16 points and nine rebounds for Penguins, who snapped a five-game losing streak overall with the victory. Blake Allen scored 11 points.

In my eyes, the only real way to tell a players worth when recruited before they play here is..who did we beat out to get the player? Who else is recruiting them? Some of our local recruits chose us over schools such as Lake Erie College, etc. These may be players who are only on partial schollies. The national guys--I'd love to know who else recruited/offered them. That will clue you in to how they may pan out.

Great point. I always look at the list of who has made offers. It is hard at our level to get this though ..partials and such. I commented in the other thread that Pratt took YSU over Missouri State and Southern Utah. Not power teams, but both coached exceptionally well, with good recruiting coaches. I consider that a win for coach W. I think I may try to add this to the bios I am creating for the site.

I was reading that JUCO commit Pratt chose YSU over Missouri State and Southern Utah. Says he was initially offered to BYU.

Nice post Wick. I would add that we were only able to get some of these locals because it was a down year ...and he recruited a very high level. Only coach T did better, when he was selling local recruits with a move to the MAC. As the local prep talent goes up, we may continue to pull in the upper-tier as well. We can do that if a couple of these locals stay out of trouble and are successful. One thing I would not agree with ...it was coach H that first heavily-recruited CA. Just a trip down memory lane:

Andre Mason
Ian Dominelli
Dave Hong
Jake Anderson
Sherod Holmes
Kevin Smith
Crispin Fernandez

It was coach W himself that said he was not a California guy. I was very happy to see him rethink his position and get out there to some of those JUCO's. Staying in the upper east coast and GA made me very happy as well. Maybe we can start taking  some of these SoCon and CAA prospects.
