Ward Had Career Night Junior Ashen Ward turned in a career performance against UIC on Dec. 30. Ward scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Ward set career highs in points, field-goals made and 3-point field-goals made. His seven 3-pointers made rank tied for fourth-most made in a single-game. The school record is 11 by Mike Alcorn against Pitt-Bradford on Feb. 24, 1992. It was also the most 3-pointers made since Quin Humphrey made eight against Detroit on Feb. 14, 2007.

Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.
Bad start. ECU produced 11-runs off of 13 hits. They had no triples, or homers off of the guins. They just produced, and we had 3 errors ...all producing runs.
Opening weekend for the guin hard-ballers. Good luck. We are so young this year. I was surprised not to see a group of young players from Fitch and Canfield, but we have two from power-house Cathedral Latin. Several frosh from PA as well. Always nice to see kids from Hickory, we have had a great run of players from there. Couple of young guys to watch:
-David Leon was Horizon new-comer two years ago, then red-shirted last year. I hope it was not a serious injury. He is tough.
-Dan Hurlimann out of Rochester NY, was first-team all region . .588 as a junior & .386 as a senior. Switch-hitter.
-Nic Manuppelli out of PA is a right-hander. He played on the Allegheny elite team. averaged almost 1-strikeout per inning.
-Chris Mitko played down here in Columbus at Northland ...batted .688 last year.
I wish we had some more experience, but I am excited either way. This is Pasqual's first really large recruiting class, and many of them are going to have to play.
Boy this game against BG is truly a "must win". Our players need some respect, and a MAC win would be something. We need to turn out in numbers for this.
Detroit -- Detroit outscored the Youngstown State men's basketball team 18-6 over the final eight minutes of the first half and held off a late charge to win 91-79 on Wednesday evening at Calihan Hall.
YSU's largest deficit was 23 with 16 minutes remaining, but the Guins trimmed that down to 15 with 12:25 left. The margin was eventually down to nine with 2:17 left following a 17-7 run, but that's as close as the Guins would get.
Damian Eargle matched a career high with 25 points, and the sophomore forward added 11 rebounds and five blocks. All three of those stats were game highs as well.
The Penguins trailed just 30-25 with 8:04 remaining in the first half, but they had just two more field goals the rest of the period and missed its final six attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. That helped Detroit take a 48-31 lead at halftime.
Detroit improved to 15-14 overall and 9-8 in Horizon League play while YSU fell to 8-18 and 2-14.
The Penguins shot 36.8 percent for the game and were just 7-for-35 beyond the 3-point arc. Ironically, YSU broke the previous school record for 3-pointers in a season when Ashen Ward hit a triple with 14:29 remaining in the first period. The Penguins now have 206 treys on the season, surpassing the previous mark of 199 set during the 1997-98 season.
Detroit shot 47.5 percent overall and 57.1 percent in the first half. Five players scored in double figures, led by 24 points from Nick Minnerath. Ray McCallum added 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Through 10 minutes, neither team led by more than four, and the game featured five ties and four lead changes. Dan Boudler's free throw gave the Penguins a 15-11 advantage with 13:52 on the clock. Detroit went on a 9-2 run to go up 20-17 on a Nick Mick Minnerath bucket, but a three-point play by Eargle tied the score at 20-20 with 10:57 left.
Detroit went on an 8-0 run to go up 30-21, and, after YSU cut it to 30-25, the Titans scored seven straight points to take a 37-25 advantage. A Blake Allen lay-up cut the deficit to 10 with just under four minutes left, but Detroit hit three triples in the final 2:17 of the half to take a 48-31 lead at halftime.
The Titans led 75-56 with 8:16 remaining, but that's when YSU made its run. DuShawn Brooks and Eargle had four points apiece, and Kendrick Perry hit a triple with 2:17 to get the margin to single digits for the first time of the period at 82-73. Perry missed the front end of a one-and-one on YSU's next possession, and he missed a 3-pointer with 1:34 left that would have cut the game to two possessions. Detroit went on to score six of the next nine points.
Youngstown State returns to Beeghly Center to face Bowling Green on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as part of the ESPNU BracketBusters.
Youngstown State University track athletes Michael Davis and Samantha Hamilton were named Horizon League Runners of the Week for the week of Feb. 14 following their performances at the Akron Invitational.
Davis placed fourth overall in the 60m, finishing the race in a league-best 6.88 seconds. His time ranks fifth in YSU's record books. He also ran the 200m in a time of 22.18 seconds, which is just shy of his season-best time of 21.98.
Hamilton set a new school record in the mile with a time of 4:56.21 to finish sixth in the gold division. This is also the fourth-best mile time in the Horizon League this indoor season. The previous YSU record was 5:00.99 set by Lauren Blasι in 2010.
The Penguins will compete at the Kent State Tune Up on Feb. 18-19 and will host the Horizon League Indoor Championship meet on Feb. 26-27.

To the Point Youngstown State's two point guards - Blake Allen and Kendrick Perry - are two of the best in the Horizon League at taking care of the ball. The two have combined for 155 assists and committed just 74 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.1. Allen and Perry are tied for the league lead with a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Sulskis Nearing 16th Senior Vytas Sulskis ranks tied for 17th on the YSU all-time scoring list with 1,255 career points and is just the 18th player in school history to score at least 1,200 points in a career. He needs 34 more points to move into 16th place on the all-time list. He became the 32nd player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career after scoring 22 against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 27.
Eargle Climbing Blocks Chart Sophomore Damian Eargle is quickly climbing the YSU single-season blocks chart. His 73 blocked shots rank third on the single-season list. Only Ricky Tunstall, in 1982-83 and 1983-84, has blocked more shots in a season. He is also just the second player in school history to record at least 70 blocks in a season. Including his 57 blocks at UNC-Greensboro in the 2008-09 season, Eargle has 130 career blocks in 54 games. His current career average is 2.41 blocks per game.
Guins Tied School Mark With their 14 3-pointers against Butler on Jan. 9, the Guins tied a school record for most 3-pointers in a game. It marked the fifth time in school history that has been accomplished. The last time the Guins made that many 3-pointers was against UIC on Feb. 3, 2007.
Eargle Leads League Sophomore Damian Eargle leads the Horizon League with 2.9 blocks per game. He has collected 65 over the last 22 games, including a career-high six against Wright State on Jan. 20, Malone on Dec. 13 and Toledo on Nov. 24. Eargle also has 73 of the Guins' 122 blocks on the season.
Ward Had Career Night Junior Ashen Ward turned in a career performance against UIC on Dec. 30. Ward scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Ward set career highs in points, field-goals made and 3-point field-goals made. His seven 3-pointers made rank tied for fourth-most made in a single-game. The school record is 11 by Mike Alcorn against Pitt-Bradford on Feb. 24, 1992. It was also the most 3-pointers made since Quin Humphrey made eight against Detroit on Feb. 14, 2007.
Sulskis Climbing 3-Point Chart Senior Vytas Sulskis continues to move up the Youngstown State all-time 3-point chart. With three 3-pointers against Cleveland State on Feb. 12, Sulskis ranks fourth all-time with 164 career 3-pointers. He has made 38 3-pointers this season and needs two more to pass Quin Humphrey (165, 2003-07) for third place. Sulskis' season-high for 3-pointers made was 46 in 2007-08.
Last to Score 30 With 30 points against Loyola on Jan. 9, 2010, DeAndre Mays set a career-high and became the first player to score at least 30 points since Keston Roberts scored 31 against Detroit on Feb. 27, 2007. Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.
The Youngstown State University Athletic Department, in conjunction with 570 WKBN, is offering a special $1 ticket price to attend YSU men's and women's basketball games for the remainder of the season.
The YSU home schedule will feature a non-league men's contest against Bowling Green on Feb. 19, as well as the men's and women's Senior Day games. Special give-away nights will include key chains, stadium cups and team pictures.
Fans may purchase a regular-priced $8 general admission ticket for $1. The tickets may be purchased in advance at the Athletic Ticket Office, by calling 330-941-1YSU or on game day at the Beeghly Center ticket office. The gates will open one-hour prior to tip-off each game.
Remaining men's home games are the Feb. 19 game against Bowling Green, Feb. 24 against Green Bay and the regular-season finale and final home game for seniors Vytas Sulskis and Dan Boudler versus Milwaukee on Feb. 26.
Remaining women's games include Saturday's 4:35 p.m. contest versus Valparaiso, March 3 versus UIC and the regular-season finale and final home game for senior Bojana Domitrov against Loyola on March 5.
The Feb. 19 game vs. Bowling Green, which tips off at 7:05 p.m., is part of the ESPNU Sears BracketBuster series and all in attendance will receive a YSU Stadium Cup.
Tickets for the Feb. 24 contest against Green Bay at 7:05 p.m. are $1 courtesy of ClearChannel Youngstown and Sheetz. The regular-season finale against Milwaukee features a special 1:05 p.m. tipoff and fans will receive a team photo.
On the women's side, the Penguins play host to Valparaiso at 4:35 p.m. tomorrow. Fans in attendance will receive a YSU Stadium Cup with their $1 admission.

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State baseball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League in 2011 in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches.
Defending regular-season champion Wright State was chosen as the preseason favorite, receiving three first-place votes and 32 points. Tournament champion Milwaukee also received three first-place votes but finished with 31 points to place second.
UIC earned the other first-place vote and was picked to finish third with 27 points, and Valparaiso was slated to finish fourth with 24 points.
YSU and Butler each received 13 points to finish in a tie-for-fifth, and Cleveland State was picked to finish seventh with seven points.
Senior outfielder Joe Iacobucci received recognition from the league's coaches in a preseason questionnaire conducted by CollegeBaseballInsider.com. Iacobucci was ranked as one of the top three pure hitters and the most under-rated hitter in the Horizon League.
Iacobucci is one of five seniors on the Penguins' roster this season, joining Cody Dearth, Greg Dissinger, Armani Johnson and Phil Klein. Fans will have a chance to meet the 2011 squad Saturday morning at the baseball program's First Pitch Breakfast at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Banquet Hall in Youngstown.
The Penguins will open their 2011 campaign on Feb. 18 at East Carolina.
