YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: How good is the MVFC
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:44:37 AM »
I can not and will not haggle over the last teams in and out of the playoffs...unless the team being left out is a top 10 team.  Win your conference, win all your games or don't expect to be entitled to the playoffs, based upon tradition, conference affiliation or anything else.

Separately just before I read this:
Face Facts.  Patty V has ZERO pull and cant influence a june bug.

NDSU had to do it the hard way by just winning every game and leaving it out of the committee's hands.

but seriously, the MVFC deserves 5 teams in this dogsh** FCS division, seriously, the top 25 teams are just embarassing.  NDSU, UNI, YSU, ISU, SDSU even SIU & IND ST would beat every team in the top 25 if given a shot in the playoffs.

Lakes, if you guys are bored winning national championships, than lets move the entire MVFC up to the FBS.  Then we are done with the BS selection committee, and you guys can play in bowl games, and we can all laugh as we tear up MAC and Sun Belt teams.  Throw in more scholarships and you guys will be busting up your new rivals like Nebraska and Iowa (you are already busting up MN, IA State....).

You in?

I thought this:
Adding to our conference, under the Grow or Die method.  As previously discussed, the major FBS conferences have moved to 16 teams (not that they care about travel costs)...should the conference look to add a few members and split the conference in an East and West division.  Obviously our own bias nature here is to help YSU, as we see the in-efficiencies in being the farthest team East in the league.  However, adding new teams will only add the same issues that we once faced…finding a separate conference for all other sports.  Thus, who would be another good fit for the Missouri Valley Conference or Horizon League? What about adding the likes of someone like:
 - Richmond
 - James Madison
 - Eastern Illinois
 - Eastern Kentucky
 - OVC team(s) from Tennessee
Then again, do we need to add in the most elite teams or can we just offer to any half-decent club that fits the mold for us for location?  Bringing any new team into the MVFC will help them...even those teams that are not mentioned.

New division conceptually
North or West(?)
NDSU
SDSU
South Dakota
UNI
Missouri State
*New team out West or pick your Illinois team to move

South or East (?)
YSU
Indiana State
Illinois State
Southern Illinois
Western Illinois
*New team in the East
*Potential 2nd new Eastern team (should an Illinois team move to the West division)

I like the way Kirk Herbstreit put it when he discussed Baylor just after 10:00am on GameDay this week.  He noted how Baylor has done well over the last few years and has moved up from the bottom of the Big12.  He mentioned how during their time of transition that it was good to play lower competition to get as many wins as possible.  But now...they need to schedule better teams to stay near the top of the division and maintain their exposure (something they did not do this year).

Well... you both have it at a tighter game than Vegas (YSU -21).

The weather forecast keeps getting better.

I'd like to think that we can reach 300 yards rushing and not give up 300 yards passing.

05 This was a close one last year as you mentioned.   While we were up 24-0 at half...2 of our TD drives were 30 yards and 37 yards.  I can't recall if this was due to turnovers or poor Special Teams on Duquesne's end.  It quickly became 24-14 before we got up and running again late in the 3rd.

We had a great day running the football and held them to only 39 yards on 27 attempts.  However, they threw for 371 yards...far beyond what we should have allowed them.  During this game we also were still trying to determine our #1 RB.  Up to this point in the season carries had been split between Ruiz, Webb, Pace, Bellamy, etc. We now know our #1 and can utilize other RBs as needed.

No over looking and no let downs!

I haven't been as keen this offseason and have not kept up with the B1G.  As much as I do not like making un-informed decisions or picks, for the sake of argument...

Both offenses play relatively well but not outstanding against the questionable defenses. Similar TOP for both squads. Illinois coaches try not to reveal too much of their playbook and YSU tries to keep the new starting QB fairly comfortable as well.

YSU has a chance to tie with a FG, but goes for the TD to win...

I keep an opening championship weekend in my schedule every year.  However, this year will not be a year that I attend.  Go Bison!

I think those posters here worry that with an aging fan population...that at some point those fans will no longer be able to show up and we will have a major drop off in attendance.  This assumes that those fans would not be replaced.  I believe that the core fans pass along the tradition of tailgating and going to the game with their kids and families, so no drop off should occur.    Meanwhile afew other fans pass thru coming and going.  The bigger worry for a lack of future attendance may be based on the likelihood of the younger generation staying in the Youngstown area.  The sale of the "state of Youngstown" might be a bigger marketing issue then the marketing of the Penguins in order to keep such attendance.  My perspective would say that so long as the population stays the same and a decent product continues on the field, the attendance will remain similar.  I seldom believe those who threaten to drop their season tickets really would...or would not be replaced.

Chances are getting better for a bid. Lots of teams below us are losing today. The New Hampshire win may hurt us the most.

I have seemed to have lost the link for the current year attendance, however in 2012 YSU was 17th in total attendance in the 1-AA.
http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/Attendance/2012.pdf
Now, take out Appy St. and Old Dominion, both transfering to 1-A and we are up to 15th on the list.  Some of these teams actual attendance is closer to the actual at the game.  However, I would tend to think that many 1-AA schools have similar issues with attendance.

I agree as a commuter school you are losing out on attendance at the game.  Even with free student tickets, it does not bring them here.  While I think your 5,000 in seats and 9,000 announced is likely, I'll bet the over on the announced.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Football Game Televised Saturday!
« on: November 21, 2013, 01:36:17 PM »
I know that many of us dislike televising the games live in hopes of a larger crowd.  However, lets put ourselves in the athletics department shoes.

With the projected weather of cold, wet, snow, etc. lets say we (now in the athletic dept, marketing, etc.) spend [insert your own $ figure here] in funds to hash out more than normal free tickets and put out a comercial to come down to the ICE CASTLE, or other marketing scheme you wish.  Do you really think that will attract more visitors for this game?  Will it give them (now us, we are in there shoes afterall) any benefit?

Now, lets say we put the game on TV.  I see no major downward shift in attendance, maybe down 1-2k (because really...they are fair weather fans).  Those fans are happy to watch the game in their own comfortable living rooms and it will hit a larger audience that are less-likely to come to a regular season game.  However, this group does buy playoff tickets and championship t-shirts.

Stay with me here...

I see both cases being similar benefit to YSU...yet the game will be channeled to a larger audience via WFMJ.  The costs and benefits (key to what happens next) will be readily determinable Saturday around 5:10pm.  A win will push more fans out to the stadium the next week and a loss (as many of you believe) would put us our of the playoff picture...and you can all start planning where to watch the OSU-Michigan game.

So why do some fans sit and others stand?  Some thought provoking articles linked below.

http://www.sbnation.com/2010/9/3/1667401/fan-guide-standing-games-etiquette-football-rules

I agree that someone standing an entire game (outside of the student section) could be quite annoying to many of the fans, not just limited to the silver sneaker club.   And maybe thats where our agreement ends...

I dont stand the entire game, even though at times I would like to stand more than I do. However, as fans (fanatics) I don't see a problem with standing during meaningful plays or critical junctures in the game including but not limited to 3rd down and 4th down (especially when the entire team and coaching staff is asking you to stand) and final plays of the half and game.

I know that our fan base includes a dynamic set of ages.  Is there some place to compromise here?  A "silver-platinum Penguin" package where there is no standing or blocked view?  No doubt different than most if not all stadiums but it would be appreciated by those who use it...including me at some point down the road.  How about a "rowdy-roddy penguin" package that includes those who love to stand the entire game?

I like that Wolf has shouted out to the community.  However, I am somewhat surprised that this is the first of its kind in his tenure, as it seems the most obvious was to encourage new fan support.  I like some of the other ideas that are being discussed as well.  Anything to encourage and promote the larger attendance.

However, as die-hards on this board we need to understand that there will be opportunites that get in the casual fans that are not as rowdy and will not stand up and cheer on third down.  Until there is a waiting list for tickets (lol), we can not demonize this group and must also encourage their attendance and commitment to the team and university.  I've said before, I know some of those who come and knit or play on their ipad.  The ones I know are very supportive of the team and I am happy to sit near them.  My frustration comes mainly from the prior two years of fans behind me encouraging me to sit down (and they aren't "knitters").  I have not had that problem this year.  Likely, they have not attended this year.

Continue to promote to those you know outside your group to come and tailgate.  Promise them your extra tickets if you have them.  Those with social media expertise keep up the continued push.
