YSU Penguin Athletics / Horizon League Awards
« on: February 28, 2022, 03:03:33 PM »
The Horizon League announced their selections this afternoon.  Looks about right to me.

For the men, Akuchie is second team, Cohill is third.

For the women, Ritz is first team, Olson is second

Ritz and Aulbach are on the all-defensive team

John Barnes is Coach of the Year

Another weekend in late February, another set of track championships (yawn!)  It is unfair to these talented athletes that fans simply expect these results each year.  So congratulations to the men and women and to Gorby and his staff for your hard work and dedication.

A marvelous accomplishment. Excellent representatives of the university on and off the court.

Chief, they can't draw IUPUI until the finals.  Our path (without a very unlikely first round upset) looks like this:

#7 Oakland at home in the quarterfinals next Thursday.  Semifinal against #3 Green Bay in Indianapolis. Then IUPUI in the championship game should we survive.  IUPUI has a ridiculously easy path to the final game (but they earned it.)

As 68 just explained very well, IUPUI is the only team in the league that can contain Ritz on the inside and also pressure our shooters on the perimeter.  They partially blocked two outside shots in the first quarter, which caused us to hurry those shots for the rest of the game. They looked unbeatable last evening, but five days previously, they looked very average in a loss at Green Bay.  Again, IUPUI starts four seniors/graduate students who will all be gone next season. Their coach is facing a major rebuild. It is impressive how he gets quality players to join a program with few fans and a small "high school" style home gym.

For us, get the job done tomorrow and claim the second seed. I would also like to see CSU beat Green Bay at home tomorrow and set up a Green Bay-IUPUI semifinal.

Green Bay is only going to be down for short while, so we need to get this done :)

I agree.  Green Bay has many talented 2nd year freshmen (Covid year plus this year.)  Next season it will be Green Bay and YSU battling for supremacy.  By my count, IUPUI loses 4 out of their top 6 players, including their three best.  Unless they reload very successfully in the transfer portal, this is their last shot.  Hope that they are feeling that pressure.

Obviously, the posters that made a career of bashing #8 on this message board know more about football than the brain trust at a worthless, pathetic organization like the Kansas City Chiefs. ::)

This is very good news. You are correct. Just assuming that we beat lowly UIC on Saturday, we would finish with the #2 seed even if we lose to IUPUI on Thursday.  And the worst case scenario should be a 18-4 league record and tied for first place (although obviously the top seed would go to IUPUI.)

But 19-3 and undisputed regular season champion sounds a lot better.

How many times in the Calhoun era did we climb the proverbial mountain only to stumble down in a most bizarre way?  How do you beat Oakland and Detroit and then give such a pathetic effort against a bad team? (Sorry Buck, RMU is a bad team.)  How do you build fan support in a community that really does not care for basketball very much when you puke away opportunities like this?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women score critical win at CSU
« on: February 12, 2022, 12:12:46 AM »
Very important win in overtime. Good defense after giving up 26 points in the first quarter (gulp!)  We hit 15 threes for the game, including a trio in a row in overtime, as the dumb CSU coach tried to play us with a zone for most of the evening.

No way any school at our level sees 42k. Not even in the realm of possibility. They have to be moving up though. Signing their 5th major prospect for a reason. They may see 42k on a year where they host the dance band competition, but that is only once every 5-7 years. If they are not moving up, they are the team to beat in 2022.

Remember that historically black colleges often play their "home" football games in pro stadiums in southern cities with huge African-American populations.  These are important community events and started way back in the days of Jim Crow segregation.  If Jackson State is reporting 42k, logically they played several of these "classic" contests off campus.

John Haneline has been announced as the new LB coach. He was previously the defensive run coord. & D-Line coach at Western Illinois.

Somebody please explain how this is a good hire.  Western Illinois had one of the worst defenses in the country for the past several years.

Before IUPUI we have to get past a road game against the thugs from Cleveland and a home game against a good Northern Kentucky team.

The emergence of quality video streaming and ESPN+ has been a mixed blessing.  It enables us to watch all the road football and basketball games, and some Olympic sports.  But at the same time it allows casual fans to watch home games from the comfort of their living rooms.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: The wolf man
« on: February 01, 2022, 01:35:24 PM »
We pulled the plug to early on Wolford.

I am still in the opinion that if Wolf has hired a good defensive coordinator, he would have gotten us into the playoff. He could very well be a coordinator today in a I-A team, if not a power 5 team.
I am sure he is making more $$$ as a position coach at Bama than as HC at YSU. Best luck to him.

The university gave Wolford more money to hire assistants than they ever gave to Heacock.  Wolford just could not locate and hire the right defensive coordinator.  And he tried several times. That is a big reason why he was not a good head coach.

This was an inexcusable loss to an inferior opponent.  We have not been the same team since that last minute meltdown against IUPUI.  I fear that yesterday is just the first of four consecutive losses that will ruin what looked like a special season.
