YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: SPRING BALL
« on: April 14, 2022, 05:39:34 PM »
Anyone have any info on the team during spring ball. Progression. Thoughts. Player personnel. Coaching. Disappointments. Injuries. Lineman.

I have no information.

Go Guins.

I also have nothing.  This is ridiculous.  If the outside media won't cover spring football, the university should provide regular reports on the athletic department web page and the athletic department youtube channel. Why do I get the impression that there are several dozen YSU business students who could market our programs as a freakin' class project better than the so called professionals that are on the university payroll.

We picked up a guard in the transfer portal. Played with Paige Shy in high school.  Hopefully can help fill the large gap left by graduation of Olson.

Also, IUPUI coach moved on to Butler. I expect that he will take the few remaining good players at IUPUI with him. On paper for next year, barring more disturbances in the transfer portal, Green Bay and YSU are the frontrunners.

I agree that the lack of coverage is disappointing.  Is it the local media or is our athletic department failing to supply info?

I guess that we will learn something from the upcoming spring game.  But even then, how can you determine development when you can't play outside competition?  I don't understand this.  The NCAA allows baseball and softball teams to play a fall schedule against a few other schools.  Basketball teams get two scrimmages with other teams (in a closed gym.)  But football is not allowed to do that.

Imagine how interesting a spring game would be against an Akron or a Kent.

EKU and JSU both left the OVC. They are going into the ASUN, a conference which will be IA/FBS in a year.

Thanks for reminding me all those schools are moving up, some were recently D2. I need to go for a walk!

ASUN is and will remain a FCS conference, so EKU is not going to FBS.  JSU will spend only 2022 in ASUN before moving to Conference USA and FBS.

Viverito also stated that the conference will not use divisions.  Rather, you would play everybody at least four times in six years!  Sorry, that is not practical.

Fail to see any logic in her statement.

Nothing that Viverito has said about scheduling is logical.  She claims that there will be no divisions yet states that the Dakota schools will always play each other. That alone makes a shambles of her 4/6 provision. She is just trying to placate UNI and Missouri State who fear getting stuck with the Dakotas each season.  I still submit that the divisions that I proposed at the top of this thread are the only logical scheduling pattern.  And in 2023 if that proposal came to a vote, it would be approved by league teams by a 10-2 margin.

Viverito also stated that the conference will not use divisions.  Rather, you would play everybody at least four times in six years!  Sorry, that is not practical.  You know that the Dakota schools will insist on yearly matchups. The Illinois schools and Indiana State (right on the Illinois border) would rightly also insist on playing each other every year?  Divisions is the only answer. And it will mean far fewer trips to the Dakotas for us.

Someone just told me that Luke Chicone has entered the transfer portal. He looked overmatched late in the year after a promising start.  Why do I have this feeling that things are starting to unravel for Calhoun.

Good to see 17 offensive linemen listed on this roster. Hopefully we can develop five of those into a cohesive unit. And of course I was anxious until I saw McLaughlin and Crenshaw still listed on the roster.

DMorton, none of the incoming freshmen are listed (only redshirt freshmen.) The exception is Van Keen from Stow who I assume graduated from high school mid-term and is eligible for spring ball.

Any new contract awarded to a YSU coach should contain a clause that prohibits that individual from leaving for the same position in the Horizon League.  At least that is what I would do if I were the YSU AD.

In fact, I think that CSU believes that they can do much better than Calhoun. After five years when your last recruiting class was not as good as your first recruiting class, that is a big red flag.

Makeshift tournament. Pay to play no TV its an attempt by someone to make $$$ at the University's expense.

Exactly. This tournament is a scam. The proliferation of "classics" beyond the NCAA and the NIT reminds me of the ridiculous, irrelevant football "bowl" games that pollute the landscape every December.

Olson was having one of the better games of her career.  Scoring, distributing the ball, defending.  We were in total control of this game.  Then when she went down with that bad ankle injury, the team lost composure. Ball movement was poor, shots were rushed, and Kent was able to double team Ritz. That just shows how indispensable Olson was and how difficult she will be to replace next year.

It was just posted that our women are hosting Kent State in the WNIT on Wednesday at 5:30.  That starting time can only mean a doubleheader with the men.

I had thought a matchup with Kent State was possible for the men's, but I see Kent State is headed to Southern Utah.  Where did you see the time of 5:30 posted?

On the WNIT bracket. Game is listed as 5:30 in Youngstown. YSU media is stating that the time will be determined.

Calhoun has two important jobs. He not only needs to produce a consistent winner, but he also needs to convince the disinterested population of the Mahoning Valley that men's college basketball is relevant in their lives.  The catastrophe that unfolded this evening makes both of those tasks extremely difficult if not impossible.
