YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: MBB at Detroit
« on: February 10, 2014, 08:14:11 PM »
Lets talk, agree with you about the lack of coverage of the basketball program by the local media. It's as if basketball and other sports at YSU are an afterthought.  The local tv news is as bad as the vindicator. Even with the football program I don't think the coverage is very good. The local media covers Ohio State as much as or in some instances more than YSU. I have had a problem with this for years. Similar to your idea about the Vindy having weekly columns on the basketball teams, I would like to see one of the local news stations dedicate more time during the sports segment of the news at least once a week to cover and report on the football and basketball programs during the season.

Another thing about the local media is that they are very soft. Rarely do they ask tough or interesting questions. They also very rarely criticize YSU sports even when it is warranted. I will say Scalzo is getting better in this regard.

And the beat goes on. Slocum must be a glutton for punishment. I mean how much losing can one person take?

If we where not allowed to play up or down then we should only be allowed to play full scholarship fcs teams. We should not be able to play partial scholarship fcs teams-that is still playing down. Aren't those some of those schools we have been playing partial scholarship schools?

Perhaps the ncaa should only allow fbs teams from power conferences to play only other power conference teams. Only mid majors can play mid majors. Only full scholarship fcs can play full scholarship fcs. Only partial scholarship can play partial
Scholarship and so on and so forth. Maybe there needs to be more levels of football.

Compare our schedule to N. Iowa's. For the second consecutive season N. Iowa plays two FBS schools-this upcoming season they play Iowa and Hawaii on the road. The other OOC games are Morgan State and N. Colorado at home. That is a very respectable schedule. Now compare that to ours. I don't get it. Any wonder why people aren't interested?

One cannot defend the OOC schedule. I talked to Joe Scalzo about it and he told me he asked Strollo about the OOC scheduling a few weeks ago. According to Scalzo, Strollo told him that the OOC schedule doesn't matter when playoff teams are being determined and that the conference schedule is what matters.

Of course Scalzo and myself and I know many others disagree with Strollo's view on the OOC schedule.  To me, YSU should play one OOC game against a good FCS team-preferably one that has tradition and is recognizable to fans. Even if YSU does a home and home with a good FCS team that is far better than playing 3 cupcakes.

I wouldn't even mind playing 2 money games instead of three teams that generate no interest. YSU needs to try anything it can to get more people interested in the program.

The HL is down this year. A lot of bad teams. despite this, ysu is only in sixth place. YSU is just not a good team. The program is not a good program. Lets call it for what it is. Some people get made and say it's negativity. It's reality. I am not going to pick on coaches, players or the athletic department. They all do the best they can.  Could we have better coaches, better players and better personnel in our athletic department? Perhaps. But at the end of the day they all do the best they can.

I heard that he is done. YSU hasn't announced anything yet because they are giving him time to try and find another coaching job. It is easier for him to find another job if he technically still has one. YSU is doing him a favor in that respect.

and btw most people on this board are too serious. they need to lighten up and take a joke every now and then. I only take personal shots when I have been attacked personally.

when I post some outrageous stuff its meant to make people laugh-the people that don't are too uptight!

this team is fun to watch. people have to understand, when come from a downtrodden area like Youngstown you want more than anything to have a winning team that represents you and your community. no one is more proud of the university than I am. I wear Youngstown and ysu on my sleeve. but when you have to endure so many losses and other crap year in and year out it is hard not to complain. but at least I complain-it shows I care. most people in the valley don't complain, they don't cheer, they don't do anything because they don't care.

now, ysu bb is fun to watch and hard to watch at other times. I would like to see ysu make bb the number one sport. BB should get more money than football. with the bb program ysu has a chance to compete for a national title at the highest level unlike in football. if ysu put more resources into bb one day I could see them winning the HL and doing some good in the ncaa tournament.

question is why do the powers that be continue to hold onto football and make it the number when sport in a division most around the country and even in this community don't care about? why don they put money into basketball which would give us national exposure and more respect? and let the fans have a legit chance at being part of the best sporting event college or pro?

Just like coach jimmy v said, dont give up dont ever give up. He gave one of the most emotional and inspirational speeches ever given by anyone.

Look for superfans return for the upcoming football season! Superfan and the university are in ongoing contract talks as we speak. Ysu recognizes the need to revive the fan base. If all goes well superfan will also be back for mbb games starting next season.

Some ideas being discussed include having superfan lead the team onto the field with rocket fueled roller skates, dropping him out of a c-130, and shooting him out of the rotc cannon. Anything to pump up the fans!

Gooo guins!

now those close to the program will tell you what really happened with mangino and why he left. Wolford wanted him to stay, but under the condition that mangino go on a diet. when confronted about this mangino became irate. that's when he chose to leave for iowa state. Wolford did everything he could to help mangino- he even offered to buy him richard simmons workout videos, but to no avail. things got so bad with mangino's obsession for food that he was eating the players pre-game meals.

it became clear to those within the program that mangino had a serious problem and it was affecting the teams morale. either he man up and go on a diet or leave. the decision was his. he chose to leave.

Good riddance to Tresey who will not be brought back. Also good riddance to Mangino and beathard who left for "greener grass". As part of his new deal with iowa state mangino gets $50000 per season food allowance.

To all the coaches leaving ysu,  don' t let the door hit ya where your momma split ya.

Hope wolf can find some good coachess
