YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The YSU Board of Trustees unanimously approved to extend President Jim Tressel’s contract Thursday.

They also extended the contract for YSU Provost Brien Smith.

“We are happy to have the leaders of our executive team securely in place to continue their great work in service of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and the greater Mahoning and Shenango Valley communities,” said Board Chair Anita Hackstedde.

Starting July 1, the latest extension says Tressel’s contract will continue until terminated by either party with 180 days notice.

Tressel became YSU’s ninth president in 2014.

“We have accomplished much in seven years, but there’s more work to be done,” he said. “We look forward to continue moving the university ahead on various fronts.”

Smith became provost and vice president for Academic Affairs in 2019. His contract was extended to 2025.

Farrell native Malachi Newell is leaving Youngstown State University’s football team.

The Penguins’ linebacker and YSU graduate announced on Wednesday that he has entered the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Newell appeared in both games this season and recorded four tackles, including one tackle-for-loss against Northern Iowa last Saturday.

Newell has played in 35 games at Youngstown State as a member of special teams and reserve linebacker. He announced he has one year of college eligibility remaining.

As a senior at Farrell, Newell led the entire state with 232 tackles and accounted for over 1,000 yards of total offense and 15 touchdowns while leading the Steelers to a District X Championship and an appearance in the Class A State Championship game.

He was also named a 2015 member of our WKBN Big 22.

Final Results

FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The Youngtown State track and field program clinched a pair of team titles on the final day of the Indoor Horizon League Track and Field Championships, capping the 2021 indoor season.

The men's team raced to their sixth straight league title and seventh overall, scoring the second highest point total in program history with 218 points while winning nine event titles (long jump, triple jump, shot put, pole vault, 800m, 3000m, 5000m, 4000m DMR) and holding the outright lead across all four days.

The women closed out championship weekend with a total of 186.16 points, winning four event titles (pentathlon, pole vault, 60m, 60m hurdles). With the victory, the women become the Horizon League's all-time leader for consecutive titles won (five) and overall titles (10). Coming into the weekend, the Penguins were tied with Milwaukee in both categories.

Both squads upped their team scores from the 2019-20 Indoor Horizon League Track and Field Championships when the men finished with 214 points and the women totaled 183 points.

In the first event of the final day of the four-day meet, sophomore Erin Bogard, while notching a new personal-best, set a new indoor Horizon League record in the women's pole vault, clearing 4.00m and bringing the event title back to Youngstown for the first time since 2018. The previous record was 3.81m, set in 2019. Junior Katlyn Griffie took runner-up in the event, posting a 3.73m mark.

First-year Penguin Chase Easterling captured the men's 3000m run title, posting an 8:40.24. Freshman-duo Ryan Meadows (8:46.36) and Hunter Christopher (8:48.17) also posted top-four times in the event, placing third and fourth.

Junior Wyatt Lefker won his second consecutive pole vault title, clearing 4.60m on his first attempt. Lefker becomes the second Penguin to win back-to-back Horizon League titles in the event.

Sophomore Jahniya Bowers was the best YSU finisher in the final heat of the women's 200m dash, finishing second in the event with a time of 25.04. Close behind, Teneisha Myers placed fifth (25.62), Madison Murry placed sixth (25.94) and Logan Franczkowski placed seventh (25.96) in the race. The Penguins have won the event in 10 of the last 11 league meets.

On the men's side, junior Jamynk Jackson (22.68) and sophomore Tobias Hayes (22.76) went six, seven in the final heat of the 200m dash.

YSU did not compete in monday's final heats of the men's/women's 4X400 relays or the women's 3000m run.

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (WKBN) – Former Youngstown State University head football coach Eric Wolford has been officially hired as the new offensive line coach at Kentucky.

Valley native and Kentucky Head Coach Mark Stoops made the official announcement on Thursday.

Wolford spent the previous four seasons at South Carolina. He brings 25 years of coaching experience including a pair of seasons in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers.

Other previous coaching stops include Illinois, Arizona, North Texas, Houston, South Florida and Kansas.

“I’m honored to have Eric Wolford join our staff,” Kentucky Head Coach Mark Stoops said. “I’ve known Eric and worked with Eric for a long time. I knew it would take a special person to fill this role, and we found the best candidate. I know what we are getting with Eric Wolford, and he will continue to build on the legacy that John Schlarman started. He’s intense, he’s detailed, but he also has the unique ability to connect with people.”

“I’m excited to come to Kentucky as the offensive line coach,” Wolford said. “I’ve known Mark Stoops a long time, and I’ve been very impressed with how he’s built his program. I’ve had a front-row seat, playing against Kentucky the last four years, and Kentucky is blue-collar, they are tough, they have pride, they have attitude, and they have discipline.

Wolford served as YSU head coach from 2010-2014. After a 3-8 mark in his first season, the Penguins compiled a 28-18 mark over his final four campaigns, were ranked in the top-10 three times and broke 32 school records during his tenure. He finished 31-26 overall at the helm.

It would seem that our league made the correct call when they canceled the fall season. Cases are spiking now, many of the big boys are scrambling to cancel and reschedule games. Even thinking about backing up the play-offs.

The last Clemson game is a great example of what may have been. Huge game on the road and have to play without their number 1 qb. Sure that freshman kid looks great and had a great game, like over 400 yards passing but you never know what Lawrence may have done. Maybe 4 interceptions or maybe 6oo yards passing and a win.

Vaccine is a possibility soon, albeit us common folks will be last in line to get them, if we so choose.

I am so over all this.

North Dakota State’s NFL prospect skipping spring season, opting for NFL Draft

YSU won't have to worry about NDSU quarterback Trey Lance this year as he is opting for the NFL Draft

FARGO, North Dakota (WKBN) – North Dakota State quarterback and NFL Draft prospect Trey Lance is skipping the Bison’s spring football schedule to focus on the NFL Draft.

The sophomore is draft eligible and reports say he is a top-three QB in the 2021 NFL Draft.

In his lone game in 2020, Lance ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more in a 39-28 win over Central Arkansas Saturday.

In 2019, he completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns while running for 1,100 yards and 14 TDs.

Youngstown State opens the season at North Dakota State on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m.
