YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: baseball coaches
« on: June 23, 2024, 02:20:29 PM »
hof222,

The baseball coach has been let go. I have heard absolutely nothing about a possible replacement.

Go,

The Horizon League mandates that all schools participate in men's basketball and either baseball or men's soccer. A replacement for baseball would have to be soccer, which I would personally consider to be an atrocity. However, soccer has a smaller roster size. That sport requires virtually no equipment, and we have our own facility. Financially it probably makes sense to replace baseball with soccer, much as I despise that stupid sport.
Now now Wick... don't be hating on soccer!

Pathetic effort by the bullpen! No support for the starter at all!
In their defense, they already had to pitch quite a bit the past few games just to get us to this point.

I don't think anyone saw this coming. YSU Baseball has won four games in the Horizon League tournament and they have advanced to Championship Saturday. YSU will need to win two games tomorrow vs. Northern Kentucky to win the Horizon League Championship! YSU knocked out the #1 seed Wright State Raiders tonight 6-3, a team they lost all seven previous games against this season.

Congratulations to these guys on pulling together this Cinderella run. Hopefully they got enough magic left tomorrow to win it all!

YSU Penguin Athletics / AD Ron Strollo on Penguin Football Podcast
« on: May 24, 2024, 08:33:32 PM »
This was a good discussion between our former players/coaches and our AD Ron Strollo. They asked him about the changing landscape of D1 football, what would happen if the P5 and G5 break apart, the transfer portal, among other topics.

Would recommend giving it a listen as various items that have been mentioned on this site in recent weeks were discussed:

Should be an interesting discussion tonight. Coach Phillips will be on the podcast with Kurt Hess, Kyle Sirl, Dan Kopp, and Sal Guagliardo. I would expect NIL and the portal will be two big topics. 8pm tonight. Link: https://t.co/XACS3QpNgD

New Youngstown State coach Ethan Faulkner’s staff, source told
@TheFieldOf68

Danny Reese: retained

Dwaine Osborne: head coach at D2 Charleston (WV)

Mark Richmond: head coach at D2 Notre Dame College (OH). Was on staff at YSU first two years of Calhoun era

Anthony Johnson: assistant/ player development at Ole Miss

Evan Faulkner: associate head coach Univ of Pikeville (KY). Also Ethan’s brother.

Rocco Nofli: retained/moved to new position.
Pretty impressive he was able to land two D2 head coaches as assistants on his staff. Obviously the situation at Notre Dame College, with it dissolving, helped Mark Richmond return here, but Dwaine Osborne's squad just went to the D2 Sweet 16 this past season. They went 29-5 this season.

Thought his staff was finalized as he had two assistants present at the press conference.  Makes no sense.
Not sure how having 2 staff members at his press conference would translate to having a complete staff finalized?

Anyhow, first transfer to commit is Canisius Guard Siem Uijtendaal. Averaged 13.3ppg for Canisius this past season.

The transfers are coming soon enough. We will be fine. Can't be comparing to a timeline of last year considering we had to go through the process of losing our head coach and then hiring his replacement over a period of time. Also Coach Faulkner has been finalizing his staff which will help him finalize the roster of transfers in the coming weeks.

Looks like the version of the message board they use has an upgrade:

Perhaps they can upgrade things to stop the spam. This thread over there has some posts on what can be done to slow the spam posts: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=531660.msg3776163#msg3776163

Well there are still 114,000 alumni that did not sign onto such a drastic (in my opinion) measure. Regardless of who is President or who is on the Board, the support for this great University from the Mahoning Valley and our Alumni base must continue. We should be proud YSU boasts the largest endowment of the four state colleges in Northeast Ohio, despite having the least number of lifetime alumni among those institutions.

Also, it has been reported in multiple news articles that this endeavor to renovate Beeghly is 100% being funded by outside donors. Kudos to Coach Calhoun for leaving a lasting mark on Youngstown State University!
