Title: YSU at Missouri State
Post by: ValleyTalk on September 28, 2014, 07:39:00 AM
YSU travels to Missouri State for a top 25 match-up Saturday in Springfield, MO. Missouri State recently renovated their stadium and it is beginning to rival Stambaugh Stadium imho. Note the pictures at the end of this post. In addition, their fans are pushing for a 2nd straight sell-out of 18,000, although they only have 13,000 sold right now per: http://missouristate.247sports.com/Board/59469/Contents/Game-5-24-MSU-vs-12-YSU-10414-Sellout-2-31365327?Page=4

If you get real bored, stroll to some of their other threads and see how a good chunk of their fan base wants to move up to the FBS. I have no idea what they have done in 20 years to even be considered for the FBS? They consistently average 10-11k fans per year, and their new stadium only gets them to around 18,000. I think some of their fans are just drinking the kool-aide right now.

Nonetheless, this is a very good challenge for YSU. Massey has MSU #3 in the FCS and 6 point favorites over YSU. The computers like the Bears a lot more than the humans, who have them in the 20s in the rankings.

This game reminds me a lot of last year's MVFC opener at Southern Illinois. MSU has a very good offense, but has a defense that I think we can exploit in areas. They are ranked 46th in the FCS in rush defense and 76th in pass defense. YSU is ranked 33rd in rush defense, but tied for 91st in pass defense. Needless to say, this may be a shoot-out.

Also, does anyone know if this game will be broadcast on area TV or are we going to be forced to buy the online video if we want to watch it? Last year all of our road games were broadcast live on WFMJ or WBCB!

Anyone have a web address for a Missouri state message board? All I get is a dead end, or basketball site. Thanks.

I did see an ad on TV last night that the game is going to be on WBCB.

WBCB website confirms that the game is scheduled for Oct. 4.

I want to be wrong about this, but I feel that next Saturday is the beginning of the end for Wolford.  I don't think that we will win any of the four road games and will probably lose one at home, in a customarily stupid fashion.  91st in pass defense in his fifth season.  That statistic sort of says it all.

I am the only one so far who voted Mizz State on the poll.  I think the game will be close, but I think that ultimately the Achille's heel of a weak pass defense will be exploited.  For the season, I'm afraid it'll be a another near miss.

Scalzo wrote this:

"I think the Penguins will go 8-4 with a 5-3 mark in the league. I think they'll make the playoffs. I think they'll lose in the second round of the playoffs and I think Wolford will sign a multi-year extension. "

Easy on Scalzo. I said 7-5 in the pre-season and also said if the QB problem isn't fixed or they get injuries 6-6 or worse is possible. I'll be curious to see if the BEST players play. Time for bullsh!ting the public is over with on the weenie games. Best have the studs out there now.

This game is going to be a battle.  We have the athletes to win but the questions are: Can the coaches ensure our athletes are in the right position?  & Can our athletes play 60 minutes?   Those are the questions.

I'm certainly not that pessimistic. Missouri State had two late comebacks vs. Northwestern State and Central Arkansas to get them to that 3-1 record. They are beatable, but it will all come down to our defense.

Hopefully everyone is healthy and ready for this one.

Can we freaking get Durden on the field??? Seriously, It's been 5 weeks and he's still not cleared to play because of "paperwork" issues from South Florida. Need him on the field now because he will take the place of #1 and play outside with Dortch. I don't understand what the hold up is........

^^^^^^^^  great point

Maybe they didn't want him to leave and they aren't releasing him

I don't know the facts here so this is speculation.  As an accredited institution, South Florida can not withhold a student's transcript for any reason.  The "paperwork" explanation does not make any sense.  Most likely, he took some questionable courses at South Florida that no department at YSU will accept.  He might therefore lack enough credits to play this year, according to NCAA rules.

Wolf said that the holdup was on South Florida's end so I have no idea what to make of it. We need to get Scalzo on the scoop lol.

Pre-season, I would have said MSU would be an easy win. Not now. I was serious pre-season when I said that QB was a major concern and see no reason that its changed. Unless Kitchen is an animal, the DL looks little changed from last year, T. Williams should be a starter at LB and the secondary is still a problem. Now the serious games start after  playing a bottom  team and 3 weenie games. I look for YSU to be able to run the ball well but how well they protect the QB will determine if we have an effective but not great pass  game. We should score some but I don't think YSU will light it up. The D will not stop MSU and that's were the game is important when you are on the road. They are going to move the ball and score. Hope we can keep it close. A win would    be nice but I think some of  warts are going to start showing in the MVFC games.  This isn't UNI, but its still a problem.

MSU 28-24

Travis Williams need to be on the field period.  If the staff feels he is undisciplined at LB why not try him at DE on certain downs as a speed rusher?  If the CB transfers are able to play man and the GA Tech transfer can make a difference up the middle this could work.....  At this point anything the staff can try would be worth it...........

Great post. We should have as many as 3 Williams' on the field. Let Travis focus on the x-back. In my opinion, if we win ...we win big. If we lose, we lose close.

Some items to consider:

- If my figures are correct, the Bears are averaging almost 34ppg against us over the last 4 games (they are 4-0) ...they have only won 1-game prior to that & averaged less that 14ppg over that period.

-Coach W's only game against them has to be one of his worst memories. I do not think we will collapse in the second half.

- Statistically speaking, these two clubs could not be any tighter, but MSU has the stronger schedule. What is odd in the UCA game is that UCA seemed to be their own worst enemy ...they had little issue moving the ball against the Bears. I really think if we play our game, this one is not even close ...a big Penguin win. It is all on the defense. Both defenses are giving up almost 400ypg.

These really are two pretty evenly matched teams. Our defense does scare me, I won't lie but the way to slow down Harris and MSU is by keeping him off the field. I believe we will see a heavy dose of our running game and I don't think they can stop us. This game will come down to 3 things: 1. Turnovers, 2. Responding to Missouri State's run (see the '10 and '11 games) and 3. Whichever QB makes more plays through the air.

28-21 YSU.

Defense gets a sack to seal it on a 4th and goal and I lose my mind since we generated a pass rush.

This will be the most difficult game for us so far this year, I believe Missouri St is better than Illinois. The game should be close. In fact, we will probably be leading at half time, then some how we will find a way to lose it.

I hope I am wrong and our defense holds up well against the their QB's running ability and stop their 3rd down plays. That's probably wishful thinking.

MSU 31  YSU 24

Again, I hope I am wrong.

Go Penguins!

Question:

Our defense seems to be the brunt of the blame for most seasons.  With Kitchen playing this weekend we should have a decent stable of D-Linemen.
So why does YSU not keep fresh legs in the game?  Is it lack of talent behind the starters or is that just the mindset of the coaches?
I would think that this game will require a lot of containing their QB and I would think that rotating would help keep or defense from getting gassed.

Wolf agrees that MSU > IL.

He also said last night that Kitchen hurt is foot Tuesday and will have limited action Saturday.

1. The DL is fast but not quick enough to respond to change in directions. The DL can reach the QB, but once the QB takes off, can't respond fast enough to catch him.

2. The CBs play off the receiver to prevent the big play, which appears to be based on a decision of the coaching staff.  I'm not sure if that decision reflects a defensive philosophy or has been implemented because of weak talent in DB. Either way, the effect is that YSU gives the 5-7 yard pass, which kills us on third down.

On Thursday Wolford did say that Kitchen hurt his foot so he may play, but may not start.

Now onto the game. We have been playing pretty disciplined football right now. Very few penalties and turnovers. I've watched enough football to know that when you play disciplined, you can overcome your weaknesses. I really believe Coach Bryant will throw some wrinkles in there to slow down Kierra Harris. He will get his yards, but he can't do it all himself.

I like YSU 31-27. This is an enormous game for this program IMO.
