YSU getting respect from Vegas:

Youngstown State at Illinois
Youngstown State +10
Illinois -10

Source: http://www.sportbet.com/lines/football_college

For comparisons sake:

NDSU is a 1 point favorite at Iowa State, UNI is a 16.5 point dog at Iowa, Indiana State is a 23.5 point dog at Indiana, SDSU is a 28.5 point dog at Mizzou, and USD is a 49.5 point dog at Oregon.

That and I don't see the Ducks covering a 50 point spread.

After opening weekend I'll be able to retire in the Caribbean.

Chip Kelly Ducks would cover, not sure about the new coach

FYI about Sportbet.com. This is NOT a Las Vegas Sportsbook. The Sportsbooks here in Vegas DO NOT place lines on FBS -vs- FCS games. This is an OFFSHORE site, which does it's best to make people think it is in Las Vegas.

As far as the point spread, I see this is more of a knock on Illinois than anything else. Illinois has had a few rough seasons in a row. It is the first game. Given that colleges do not have scrimmages or exhibition games against other college teams, it is really hard to know what to expect from the first game of the year.

I see no real reason to believe YSU will win this game. And, yes, I remember the PITT game. I also know YSU was not starting a new QB against PITT. I know that YSU is 1-8 in these "money games", and even though Illinois is a bottom level team in the BIG 14, they have NEVER lost to a school from FCS. Add that the game is at Illinois, and by virtue of 22 more scholarships and recruiting for a conference schedule in the BIG 14, they ought to have the depth and superior athletes overall to win. Anything can happen, that is why the games are played. I'm just not buying into any hype that YSU will win.

For the record, Indiana, Northwestern, and Minnesota all lost to FCS opponents within the last five years or so.  Of course, I am sure that those successful FCS teams (Southern Illinois, New Hampshire, NDSU, and South Dakota) could all play defense at the time of those contests.

I laughed a little too much at this, thanks Wick.

Hopefully these transfers can do something. Especially since they've been here what, a little over a month maybe and Taylor unseats Jaylin Kelly at LB and Dortch unseats Thompson at DB.

Tickets are down to $6.25

I got section 105, 50 yard line behind our bench, 64 rows up for 8.25.

They cant wait for their FCS game apparently.

I was in indy over the weekend. I saw a sport report on TV (it might have been ESPN or a local show) naming the potential upset for FCS teams on BCS teams. YSU/Illinois game was listed as one of those matchups.

Big Ten Network Predictions:
Tom Dienhart (@BTNTomDienhart)
Illinois 40, Youngstown 23

Sean Merriman (@BTNSean)
Illinois 31, Youngstown State 24

Brent Yarina (@BTNBrentYarina)
Illinois 37, Youngstown State 20

Bob Asmussen, news-gazette.com (@BobAsmussen)
Illinois 42, Youngstown State 20

----------
My prediction:
I think we will definitely move the ball on their defense, which was pretty darn bad last year giving up 35 ppg. Despite Scalzo and others believing our defense has turned the corner, I still have my doubts, especially against an offense that can put up the points.

I expect Illinois to win, but I think we will give them a fight for much of the contest. Illinois 35, YSU 24

Anyone tailgating at the Illinois game?  I will be there but no car.  Looking for a tailgating spot.

We're going to be at the hotel across the street from campus, about 2 blocks from the stadium, so we'll just pre-game there.

I have not heard of anyone else doing anything, but wander the lots and look for flags. that seems to be the rallying point at most road games.

HappyPenguin -

Too much else going on to prevent us from committing to attend this game but odds are three of us will be there.  We were also looking at one of the two hotels a couple blocks west of the stadium (not sure if they still have availability as it has been several weeks since I was looking).  We would stay Friday night and then drive back to Dayton after the game (then up to Y-Town for the remainder of the weekend on Sunday).

We also thought about tailgating from the hotel parking lot or gameday tailgating was also close by for only $20.  We will try to catch up with the two of you if we do indeed make the trip.

GoPENS67, you are welcome to join us as well - we should have a tall Penguin flag flying high (if it survived the snow storm during the SDSU last year!?!).  We hope to either be in one of the hotel parking lots to the West of the stadium or in the gameday tailgate lots just southwest of the stadium.  All are welcome!

Go Might Guins!!!

Did we fix our defense?  Did Illinois fix their defense?  Since we do not know the answers to those questions yet, predicting the margin of the Illinois victory is futile.

Who knows how both teams defenses will play Sat. I do believe Illinois will prevail.

Illinois   28
YSU.      17

I haven't been as keen this offseason and have not kept up with the B1G.  As much as I do not like making un-informed decisions or picks, for the sake of argument...

Both offenses play relatively well but not outstanding against the questionable defenses. Similar TOP for both squads. Illinois coaches try not to reveal too much of their playbook and YSU tries to keep the new starting QB fairly comfortable as well.

YSU has a chance to tie with a FG, but goes for the TD to win...
