Why is YSU BB recruiting so much in the South?

Why is YSU BB recruiting so much in the South?

Guesses here - lots of summer  showcases in the South - see a lot of guys at once.

Probably a lot of offers out in Midwest as well.  Just not as many make it to Twitter.  YSU interest in just about all of the guys in the South come from one recruiting guy in the Carolinas.  I haven't found other guys to follow on Twitter yet.  :)

Updated to change from Verbally Committed to YSU to Signed with YSU for Umude, Nickels and Bilers.

Official press release here

http://www.ysusports.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/releases/20131115iy84mu (http://www.ysusports.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/releases/20131115iy84mu)

Youngstown, Ohio – Ja'Christian Biles, Bryce Nickels, and Sidney Umude have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period to join the Youngstown State men's basketball team, Head Coach Jerry Slocum announced on Fridday (Nov. 15).

Slocum said that there is a lot of excitement within the program regarding this recruiting class.

"This is one of the most talented recruiting classes we've had since I've been here in terms of needs," Slocum said. "We are very excited about this group being a part of YSU basketball."

Biles, a 6-foot-2 guard from Oak Park, Mich., was rated as the No. 12 player in Michigan's 2014 class and as the No. 3 shooting guard. He plays for Bryant Tipton.

"Ja'Christian is a really solid two guard that can score the ball and can guard," Slocum said.

Nickels, a 6-foot-8 center from Tampa, Fla., is coached by Renaldo Garcia at Sickles High School. He averaged 13.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game at Steinbrenner High School during his junior season. He led the Warriors to record of 13-11 last season.

"Bryce is a five-man that has good length and has good offensive skills." Slocum said.

"I felt like it was a perfect fit for me, from the practices, the team, the coaches, and the community," Nickels said. "The school is nice and all of the athletic facilities are centrally located. That really appealed to me."

Umude, a 6-foot-7 forward from San Antonio, Texas, is an ESPN 3-start recruit and averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game for St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Umude, who is coached by Steve Strand, was rated as the 56th best power forward by ESPN.com and the 33rd best senior prospect in Florida by Florida Hoops.

"Sid is a four that we like that can play on the perimeter, is athletic and can take you off the bounce and can guard," Slocum said.

"I really enjoyed the coaching staff and the players treated me like a family member," Umude said

Oak Park 58, Birmingham Seaholm 47: Jachristian Biles had 19 points and Kelvon Fuller 12 for Oak Park (6-6, 3-3 OAA White). Austin Roth and Jeff Bowman scored 15 each for Seaholm (6-5, 3-3).

----------------

Ja’Christian Biles (6-3), a transfer from Southfield-Lathrup, had 17 points as Oak Park (4-3, 4-2 OAA Division 1) blitzed Birmingham Groves, 60-33. Senior Orlando Fikes, a transfer from Detroit Cody, where Tipton coached last season, had 10 points and eight assists.

“Ja’Christian has tremendous athletic ability,” Tipton said. “He’s showing senior leadership.”

Saw this RT on Twitter earlier tonight:
"@PGHbballReport: Youngstown State was at Seton La Salle today to see senior point guard Dale Clancy @SquadUp_3 @SetonLaSalle"

Wonder if this is a sign that either a) they are moving Cole to SG next year or b) Keene is on the way out?

Clancy is really small ( 5' 8 )  and has no offers. Interest from Robert Morris and California (Pa.). A real stretch for D-I.

How is this any different than Keene who is around the same height and had no D1 offers. Let's face it, not many schools will recruit kids this size, but many who do make it seem to shine in our league...

6-1 PG Shaun Stewart of Cloud County Community College has committed to YSU. Averaged 21.7 ppg last year. Played one year at North Carolina A&T, just so happens they went to the NCAA Tiurnament that year and lost to eventual national champion Louisville. Shaun is his high school's (Sun Valley, NC) all time leading scorer with over 1,700 points. That fills Keene's spot.

You guys are getting a great player and a relentless worker with Shaun Stewart.  In high school he actually had right at 2000 points for his career and averaged 27ppg.  He was player of the year 2 times.  He can score at will.  He can also dish the ball out to.  I am really excited for him and your team.

Although typically I am not excited about JUCO's, this is a kid that played at a D1 school before, NC A&T, and also had an offer to Liberty, a respectable program and school that would not be the type to recruit a troubled kid.

Looking forward to what he can bring to our program.

Not troubled at all. The coach that recruited him at A&T was fired after he signed with them.  Didn't fit the new guys system.  That's why he went the juco route.  Trust me a great all around kid.

Jordan Andrews, a 6-4 SG from Riverside HS has signed with YSU. Had offers from Arkansas St and Robert Morris along with Southeastern and Northeastern, and Louisana-Monroe. Seems like he has a nice jumpshot.

Devin Haygood
Small Forward
6'7", 175 lbs
Lincoln Senior High School, Ypsilanti, MI

Greetings, Penguin fans.  Devin attends the same high school I graduated from back in the 80s and I saw him play several times last year.  He struck me as a skilled player, who is probably a  year or two away from having a major impact at the Horizon League level.  He will probably give you something as a freshman but his real impact will be later on.  He has a good shot and good ball handling ability, and needs to add some size and strength.  He reportedly had a really good spring/summer.

Latin Davis is a good recruit at the point guard spot.  He plays for Milan High School and Milan was our rival when I played high school ball at Lincoln.  I'm very familiar with Davis.  He improved a lot from his sophomore to junior year, and played a huge role in Milan winning the Class B state title.   He's very close friends with his teammate, power forward Nick Perkins, who also has several D1 offers.

I'm a University of Detroit grad and a big Titan fan, but I wanted to drop in and congratulate your team and two players from my area on those commitments.
