Title: Fairless High QB Hunter Wells (2014) commits to YSU
Post by: ysuindy on June 24, 2013, 05:15:57 PM
Per his Twitter account.  6-5, 190 - currently 11th all time Stark County passing yards

Is this the first 2014 football commit?

I like his height and the fact that he will have played for four seasons.  He does perform against weak competition, but that is beyond his control.  Wofford and Montgomery must really like him if they offered him this early.

We should have quite a competition for the job once Hess graduates.  Good.  Survival of the fittest.  Last man standing.  That should toughen up the winner before he takes his first meaningful varsity snap. (Wargo will get some garbage time this season in three of our four first games....we better have the starters out by the third quarter.)

Good points. Let's not forget that he could be brought in as an athlete. Aside from Hess, we have two QB's now, 2 in the 2013 class (one was recruited as an athlete), and this one for 2014. We certainly have no shortage of QBs.

I would still like to see an honest effort at some power in the run game, and a true nickel/dime offense.

How did he not attend Massillon? Massillon lets few players who are great, slip through their fingers.

Massillon doesn't get them all.  AS a Fairless Alum, I say YSU might have found a sleeper.  Maybe this will be the next Mark Brungard!!!

14-21 150 yards 3 or 4 TDs 0 Ints assuming he had all the passing attempts tonight
Fairless won 42-8

F—Mahaffey 8 run (Kelly pass from Wells)
F—Olmstead 13 pass from Wells (Bair kick)
F—Weyandt 18 pass from Wells (Bair kick)
F—Wickham 19 pass from Wells (Bair kick)

the 1st TD says run and pass so a screen maybe?

1640 yards roughly away from the stark county all time passing yards leader

Fairless won by 11 but no stats reported
they are 2-0 on the year so far

Wells 31-40 464 yards 5 TDs 0 Ints

2 games for Wells
45-61 615 Yards 8 TDs 0 Ints

Needs roughly 1200 Yards for the Stark County passing yards record

From Sat Sept 7th The Repository (Cantons Local Newspaper)  #1 on all time passing record is Alliance Charles Baab 6081 yards. #6 on the list is Hunter Wells 5397, my math says that he only needs 684 yards to break the All Time Stark County Passing Record!

You're stats/math are incorrect. comming into the season he needed over 1800 yards so its impossible for him to need 684

http://www.highschoolsportscenter.com/article.aspx?id=1907

Edit: He needed just under 1800 yards to break the record according to this way back in febuary.

Highschoolsportcenter's math was wrong in that article 492(frosh)+1952(soph)+2342(Jr)=4786

6081(Baab) -4786(yards from above article)=1295 He needed to start his Senior year 1295-150(week 1)-464(week 2)=681 yards needed to break stark county all time passing record!

At least this QB has his head in the right place,  this is a copy and past from his twitter account

Hunter Wells ‏@h_wells8  4 Sep
All this talk about me breaking the stark record I could care less if I did, as long as we win that's all I'm concerned about #PacChamps

What can now be debated is the level of competition he faced to get those stats but that was an excellent post.

Just a heads up --

The QB situation is truly dark for next  year.  No matter the hype, this kid isn't ready next year for D-I football. I won't be surprised to see them seriously try to recruit a JUCO QB for next year.

Just a few thoughts I would like to share concerning Hunter Wells from fairless. I have had the opportunity to watch Hunter play on a few different occasions and viewed all film. Y.S.U. fans you are getting more of a B.C.S and F.B.S. recruit then a F.C.S. one!! Two of the reasons he wasn't more heavily recruited was because he was under weight as junior and didn't do his summer camp tour untill this summer. As far as level of competition goes its one of the last things the Y.S.U. coach would look at when evaluating the QB position. If Hunter played at a D-1 school with stiffer competition he would probably put up bigger numbers. It's my understanding all the yards the previous seasons were very hard earned as he did not have the supporting cast he does this one. The coaching staff realizes they got a big time steal with Hunter..The possibility of a larger school coming in and trying to lure him away should be a cause for concern!!

REally ? A steal ? Strange , but I recall the same "quote" being used for current YSU QBs.  Dante Nania from W. Pa. ? A steal. Tanner Garry ( who no one wanted ) a steal.  Nick Wargo from Walsh was a "steal". Recently it was Ricky Davis ( formerly of Cin. Moeller) from  Fenwick who was  a "steal". I almost forgot, the former QB from local Western Reserve was a "steal" (hes no longer on the team).

Love  the hype, but , trust me, NO STEAL.

Hmmm.  Just one week back on the forum and Paladin is already trashing our recruits.  Sad.  Very sad.  We have two evaluations of this young man, one from Shane Montgomery and one from Paladin.  Ok folks, which do you choose?

Footballfever

Do not judge all YSU fans based on the comments of one malcontent.  We are pleased that Hunter Wells has selected our school and stand ready to support him in every way.

Offering an informed  opinion , Wick. You seen him play ?  And we can wait ( as done with the other recruits over the years) to see who works out and who doesn't . What happened to the "other"  "steals" ?  Remember , Wick ?

There will be a JUCO recruit or there will be a new O next year ( and not necessarily a good one).  Take that to the bank.

JMHO

P.S. -- note that Wolf has recruited a QB every year he's been here. And every year there are glowing remarks about how good the player is. The current back-up was switched to safety. Then back to QB. And he was a Wing T QB in H.S. Wargo only played one year in H.S.  Davis transferred from Moeller to play at a small school. The local player from Western Reserve is no longer on the team. Garry wasn't highly recruited either. My advise -- they are in trouble next year at QB or they will have to change the O, become one dimensional and run the ball.   Wells is skinny & weak..Needs a serious weight program. Arm is questionable strength. Accuracy is suspect. Competition was weak. And thus, no one who looked at him was impressed, so recruiting wise, YSU made an offer and Wells accepted. Thus, he's a "steal" .

Again, JMHO.

Kurt Hess was sought after by either Cinci or Louisville ...or maybe both. I know the previous YSU staff recruited him as well. Eventually his offer never materialized (or was lost) at the FBS-level he wanted ...and we ended up with a great pick-up.

Again this kid in in HS, so I really have little interest at this point; but the two biggest elements in recruiting at the FCS-level are timing and luck.

High praise in today's Youngstown Vindicator. Sounds like he is better than I give him credit for.

Quote
Getting lucky: ScoutingOhio.com founder Mark Porter said YSU “pretty much lucked out” with its verbal commitment from Navarre Fairless senior QB Hunter Wells. “I went to a bunch of camps this summer and he was by far the best quarterback at each camp,” Porter said. “There were MAC [Mid-American Conference] schools that wanted him but they had already all signed a quarterback this class.” Wells (6-5, 185) needs just 116 yards to break Stark County’s career passing record of 6,081 yards, set by Alliance’s Charles Babb (2003-06). “YSU got Hunter into [its] camp and when I say he lit it up, I mean a perfect spiral, very accurate,” Porter said. “Maybe the only knock is he’s not a dynamic athlete but he’s a pretty good athlete.” Porter said Wells also scores well with intangibles like intelligence and leadership. “You want your quarterback to be the face of your franchise and Hunter Wells is certainly a guy that deserves that recognition,” he said.

I'll stand by my evaluation and if he comes, we'll return to this subject. Just by his comments, Porter promotes his site ( Wells was one of his clients). Fairless will also probably match up with an area team in the playoffs. You'll be able to see his arm strength and accuracy in person. In fact, there is film on him at Scout Ohio. Watch it.  Don't know what Porter is drinking but I want some.  8)

Aside from holding their own football camps coach Wolford and staff attend various satellite camps throughout the Midwest in search of the best possible players to help them challenge for a M.V.C. championship year in and year out. Does anyone find it funny that Paladin likes to question their decisions other then me?? Some of his other posts criticize various positions on the Y.S.U. football team as well. This certainly does nothing to boost the moral of the players. There is a lot of luck recruiting at the D-1AA level. To get a commitment from a 3 star athlete with multiple D-1A offers is highly unlikely. I played on the defensive side of the ball in the MAC and have had the opportunity to coach against Hunter Wells on more then one occasion. Believe me his arm strength and accuracy will not be an issue at Y.S.U.- Hands down he has one of the strongest arms ohio has to offer. I will agree with Paladin on the weight training, he will need to put on at least 20 pounds or more then likely he will be redshirted next season. Its my understanding he performed very well at the Indiana and pitt camps and received M.V.P. at each one. If timing was on his side we wouldn't even be having this discussion!! Mark Porter comments in the Youngstown Vindicator were dead on-one of his clients and trying to promote his site FUNNY!! I wonder if Paladin was watching his highlights from his sophomore season on scouting ohio?? I wonder if he bothered watching his hudl video from his junior season or if he has seen him throw this year before his evaluation!! This will be my last post concerning Hunter Wells. If Hunter does attend Y.S.U and once he takes the field I will be more then happy to carry out this conversation at stambaugh with anyone including Paladin!!

Fever, it is not that we doubt what you are saying ...we just cannot afford to care. We have a team with serious problems that a possible 2015 starter is not going to fix by next Saturday. Wells is a conversation for a high-school forum. Wells is future conversation for this board.
Title: Re: Fairless High QB Hunter Wells (2014) commits to YSU
Post by: paladin on September 29, 2013, 12:24:29 PM
Yes, I look forward to a conversation  in the future as well, Fever. I've made my comments. People will get to see him live in the playoffs and should he come to YSU, they'll see him first hand everyday. Then  my judgement can be viewed openly. There are a number of sites with film on Wells. If you see them , let me  point out some obvious problems -- first , he doesn't throw a "rope". He throws "rainbows". That's a dead giveaway to lack of arm strength. Next, look at the distance or pattern that he throws to. Short. Then there is the question of accuracy and ball placement shows up well in that. And last but not least, the "quality" of competition also sticks out ( and the lack of speed). Must not forget these films are "highlites", the "best he has". Given the speed at this level ( both of the rush, which he hasn't seen and the DBs closing speed), I expect him to be in trouble early on in the adjustment. He'll be red-shirted. At least two current YSU QBs ( Wargo & Davis) I would judge to be better than  him and neither is nowhere near being a back-up here  much less the starter .

Now. lets address the recruiting here. Its no secret that Wolf has recruited a QB or two EVERY YEAR he has been here. They have been looking for a needle in a haystack annually.  He has yet to find a replacement for the current starter. Oops, take that back. He  HAD the replacement for Hess but didn't play him ( Angle) , so the kid transferred out after last season. At last glance , he is the Captain and immediate starter at Ohio Northern and threw for 233 yds and 3 TDs on 17 of 24 last Saturday. However, since he isn't around, I'm going to chuckle when your boy fails to beat out the current backup who is a 6' former Wing T H.S. QB from W. Pa. they tried to convert to a Safety this year. YSU has the problem that none  ( including your incoming boy) of their QBs are D-I starters and will be at a serious  disadvantage on O next year. But then, no one has to take my word for it........ the peanut gallery will get to see it first hand. There will be a serious problem at QB here next year.

Then I'll get to come back on here and tell you I told you first what was going to happen

BTW, I'm aware that several schools looked at Wells but none offered EXCEPT YSU. Wells quickly accepted his only offer. Can't blame him for wanting a free education. I hope he is successful in that endeavor. But really........ lets review...... a RECORD setting QB.......... from STARK COUNTY.............and he has a scholarship  to YSU ?   People recruit Ohio heavily. Not a MAC school ? Not a CUSA ? Not the Big 10 ? YSU must be getting a "steal" ?

Where have I heard that before ?  8)

On the year he is 159/242(almost 66%) 2383 23tds and 5 ints!  Has his team at 6-1 and looking at possibly making playoffs  for only 2nd time in school history! Ray Jeske 990 am Radio said he was the best pro-typical qb in stark county and one of the best small school QBs he can remember, and ask the audience to make an argument for a better one and got no calls!  He gained almost 20 lbs between his Jr. and Sr year, I agree that redshirting him may be in his and YSU best interest, but the kid can make all the throws. I saw him at Toledo and BGSU satellite camps in stark county and was one of 2 QBs that could make the 15 yard out throw from the opposite hash while rolling out to the left......"the throw" all college coaches want to see if a QB can make!
I have had some communication with people who are semi associated with Fairless (stark county football) and know Hunter personally and this year he has left college visits to MAC schools go bye, and has already attended 2 YSU games, and is is most likely going to the game this weekend vs Western Illinois.  If he continues with the season he has started there is no doubt that other offers will probably come!  I heard he could have been a preferred walk on at BGSU, earning this status while at a satellite camp at Massillon, and that was before the season he is having now!

Don't look now but your future QB was just named NE Inland District Offensive Player of the Year; ahead of Ursaline's Chris Durkin (Michigan St.)!  He was also voted as Stark County Player of the Year by the coaches!  Was voted as WTIG area Offensive Player of the Year!  Broke the Stark County single season passing  record with  3,558 yards (62% completion), and rewrote the Stark County career passing record with 8,348 yards which places him 13th all time in the state of Ohio! He led his team to the playoffs and first playoff win in school history!  If your worried about him because went to a small high school,  pretty sure the Kurt Hess was small school (Chaminade-Julienne D-4), and Hess had good high school stats, but not Wells stats! Is this kid a day 1 starter, probably not, but I believe he will have an impact on the YSU football program in the future!  Coach Montgomery was guest speaker at Stark County Player of the Year Banquet, Coincident....maybe, maybe not!  Paladin I just don't understand why your so down on this kid! How about we have a little trust in YSU coaching staff a give the kid a chance to prove himself before we start judging!

Batty -- lets be clear, Durkin will never play QB at Mich. St. Isn't that good. Neither is your boy. WE get all kinds of All-Everythings here, as do most colleges.  Your boy didn't go far in the playoffs did he ? I've made a cold calculating evaluation of your boy. I've given my opinion. Now set back and watch. I beiieve that a D-V player playing average competition will be handled by big ,fast, and talented players  at this level because of previously IDed abilities.

Nice small H.S. player. D-I college player ? I have my doubts.

I have had the opportunity to play against Hunter Wells three times in my career.  Regrading his ability, I am beyond surprised that he is going to a D-1 school.  He is petrified to take a hit.  He gets happy feet in the pocket with pressure.  Also, he has a very weak arm.  He was picked off four times against us this year, and on each interception, the ball was further than 20 yards down the field.  He is not mobile either.  This kid is going to sit four years on this bench.

You must have forgot about the 4 TDs and 380 yards he had in the win against you this year at Fairless!  Two of them within the last six minutes!  The last TD to tie up the game, came on drive that started with 1:28 and almost 80 yards to go, and no timeouts! Both of his 4th quarter touchdowns were made possible by his ability to make a defender miss and extend the play. He is definitely not a dual threat QB, and from a article in the paper this year he will be the first to admit that to you.   I'm pretty sure that the coaches at all the camps he went to the past two years were able to see his arm strength and evaluate it accordingly! As far as his mobility, week 4 at Triway he got a severe high ankle sprain that took almost 6 weeks to completely heal, so yeah he probably was more mobile the year before!

I have to trust that Coach Montgomery knows what QB can play in his system, Did he not coach..Charlie Frye and Big Ben.  The kid dominated in his divison.  As for the classless Panther player...this Qb beat your school for the first time in 28 years.  So if he stunk..what does that say about you....it comes down to how hard this kid works and he already has shown his meddle by helping and turning a mediocre football program around. Pally isnt always right ....on this one I have a hunch he is wrong...just because a kid is a small school or non parochial school athlete doesnt mean he cant compete.   YSU had a guy named Brungard....the rest is history.

From this "classless" Manchester player, Hunter Well's performance against us in their win was clutch.  I will say two scoring drives late in forth quarter rallied their team to beat us in 3 OT.  I believe he does have leadership.  I was unaware of the ankle sprain against Triway, so I his movement was actually pretty decent for having a sprain.  Either way, he is a pocket passing quarterback.  I will admit, when I wrote the original post, I was heated at the time.  However, I still do not think he has the arm strength for D-1 football and cannot take a hit.  I guess we will see how he plays.  I pretty sure we beat them too, when it mattered in the playoffs, and held him to seven points.
