Incarnate Word very good QB, they have skill and can score.  Defense is not good.  We should be able to run he ball all night against them.

On a side note, I hear Mark Waid is no longer looked at as a QB.  He will be a hybrid RB/TE/Wildcat look.

Well that mark waid news is interesting fan. If we have to get into a shoot out with a good offense in incarnate ward I'm concerned. Hopefully our defense gets some stops, because if our offensive plays like last year we will get crushed. Our chances of winning will solely depend on how much our offense has improved.

From the Incarnate Word athletic site:

They were 3-3 in the spring, starting fast but losing the last three games.

They passed for 377 yards per game.  They also ran well (175 ypg.)  However, as 1990 noted, their defense is bad.  They gave up 318 in the air and 215 on the ground.

They averaged 42 points per game; they gave up nearly 42 points per game.

They scored 34 touchdowns in six games but gave up 32.

He's probably got the best potential out of all the QB's but there's a big difference from looking good in practice and in a real game throwing a pass which he has yet to do. He's a definite dual threat but there are going to be growing pains in the passing game. I expect it to be more of like the spring with a short check down game plan. I also would not rule out Craycraft from getting playing time as well.

True freshman and a RS freshman who was playing DE last year starring at guard on the OL this year for the Guins.... Not great. Defense should be soldi again. All depends on the line and QB play.

If Craycroft starts at QB, it doesn’t really matter who plays at WR. He won’t find them.

I'm so glad that Phillips retained he and Tressel's buddy Peterson.  Must've been a prerequisite for the job so he could pad his state pension.  He brings nothing to the team.  If you need anymore convincing look at the OL that he was solely responsible for recruiting and coaching.   If this isn't true, how/why is he still on staff?

Penguins eager for 1st test

Correspondent photo / Robert Hayes Youngstown State coach Doug Phillips looks onward after breaking a team huddle prior to individual sessions on August 14th, 2020, during Fall Camp.

YOUNGSTOWN — How far has the Youngstown State football team come since the odd spring season? We’ll get our answer Thursday night.

The Penguins kick off their 40th season at Stambaugh Stadium with a game against the Southland Conference’s Incarnate Word. The Cardinals are a high-octane team that will present plenty of challenges for YSU.

Youngstown State head coach Doug Phillips says he is excited to see the progress his team has made during the offseason and fall camp.

“I get excited to see the work we put in and see what we can do,” he said. “I think you see what you see in practice, but our guys are tired of going against each other. They’re excited to go against an opponent. I’m more excited to see the work they put in and how does it look? Then we’ll make our tweaks and adjustments after that.”

Running back Jaleel McLaughlin echoed the excitement.

“It feels really good, and seems like it went by quickly. But it’s really good and I’m excited,” he said of being back into game week.

The Penguins will feature some new faces at some different positions, beginning with the quarterback spot.

Last year’s starter, Mark Waid, is now third on the depth chart and is repping at the H-back position.

“Mark is too good of a football player not to play somewhere on the football field,” Phillips said. “We have an opportunity to do a lot with him, and we’re moving in that direction. He’s too good, and we believe as a football player he can help us win a lot of games in the future.”

As for the QB1 spot, it’s down to Joe Craycraft and Demeatric Crenshaw, who both were listed as the potential starter on this week’s depth chart.

Though Phillips won’t say who is going under center when the game kicks off Thursday, he did note that the team isn’t keen on splitting reps between the group moving forward.

“We kind of did that in the spring, and it’s hard getting one guy ready to play football, nonetheless two. We went through this camp, and everyone had the opportunity to compete,” Phillips said. “When you get to it, you have to give reps to one person more than the others. We’re starting the season, and that’s our mindset.”

The receiving position also got a bit of a makeover, as transfer receivers Bryce Oliver (Kentucky) and Jorge Porterreal (Lehigh) will start alongside C.J. Charleston. Sam St. Surin also is back in the mix this year.

All of that is done in hopes of jumpstarting the YSU offense, which ranked 86th out of 97 teams in terms of total offense (269.6 yards per game) and 88th in scoring offense (15.7 points per game).

“We have to score points. … Incarnate Word averages 42 points a game. For us to be successful with the style of football we play in our league, you want to score 28-30 points a game,” Phillips said. “Touchdowns win games; field goals won’t cut it. You have to be able to score touchdowns. Offensively, we had to look at that, evaluate it and find a better way of doing things than we did in the spring.”

A full preview of YSU’s matchup with Incarnate Word will be in Thursday’s edition.

Goodnews, you nailed it on the offensive line.  Since Carm Bricillo left for the Patriots the O line has declined.  Peterson and his son on staff is a joke.  Let's hope he and Phillips prove us wrong.

I thought this was a forgone conclusion?  Last year we had 2 camps, one for Waid because obviously Craycraft wasn't the "one".  AND a Craycraft camp that thought Waid couldn't play.  Weill, two things, First, they were both right.  Second I believe Crenshaw is the highest rated recruit in YSU football history.  You're going to live and die with DC, that's for sure.  Don't forget the spring.  D played pretty well most games, O couldn't get out of it's own way, at least throwing the ball. Do the same thing over and over expecting a different result???  Let's hope not!

Our brilliant marketing staff has done it again.  They have contradictory messages on the athletic website. Under "gameday information" they suggest there will be no game day sales.  That is almost certainly left over from the spring. No one is intelligent enough to remove it.

However, on the "gameday schedule" page, they report that ticket booths will open at 5:30.  That is undoubtedly up to date.  So you can buy tickets at the gate.

Don’t underestimate the MVFC, we would have had quite a few Ws in the spring in a different conference, IW is a mid to low level southland team I think 9pts is a good spread

Agree with play calling, need to pass some on 1st, aside from the 72 yard td which was designed to go right the running game has slowed down since the 1st qtr.

Sure would love to see a td on first drive of second half,

We have played against better quarterbacks.  We have played against better running backs.  We have played against better receivers. But have we ever played a FCS game against a better COMBINATION of those three positions? I would say no.

Crenshaw was excellent. No turnovers. Usually good decisions. Bright future.

That game was a battle of wills. They would not stop passing, and we would not stop running. Crazy way to come out with a win.
Title: Re: Incarnate Word
Post by: Penquin68 on September 03, 2021, 12:46:30 AM
Play calling on offense is very questionable.  Need to pass more and when not so expected. Crenshaw looks really good and can run and throw.  Coaches afraid to call pass plays. Without 8 we are not a good running team. Crenshaw is a good runner also.

Defense was exposed today. Hope they can play better in future game against qbs that are not so good.  So much changing of personnel on our defense almost every play causes much confusion. And some plays people were uncovered. I think some of our d lineman were tired out by running on and off the field so much.

But after all that we played well at the end of the game. And number 8 is unbelievable.  So many times the original play is shut down. He reverses and make great plays out of plays that were stuffed. With 20 running the ball, it all changes and we are stopped.

Our kicker really saved the day. Great job today. Our talent is limited, but we can do better with an improvement in play calling on offense. And less substituting on defense so everyone is ready and prepared on most plays.

We will see what the coaches do in future games and what changes are made. Hopefully no one gets hurt next week and we can be ready for league play.

Special teams were a large part of this game, They missed an easy FG and EP and had a punt blocked.

Not happy that we had to use a TO before the the first play of second half, could have used it in our 39 second drive!

Their coaching was worse than ours. Going for it on 4th down on their own 30. Kicking the ball out of the end zone at the end of regulation with 39 seconds left. At times I thought they felt so superior to us that they could do anything they wanted at any time and ignore standards like running out the clock and going for it on 4th down on your own 30.

Our special teams were very good for rhe most part. I am not sold on our Australian punter, but McFadden has really elevated his game and looked like a top kicker. His kickoffs were good and the extra points and field goals were very strong looking compared to their guy. A missed short field goal, a missed extra point, and a blocked punt essentially gave us the game.

On offense they had people open everywhere and they had a strong running game. Their up tempo offense had us on our heals all night and we were trying to substitute on defense with mass confusion. And they were picking our coverage with all the motion etc. We need to get 8 in motion like they did and get him in space. Number 20 also. Use some of their schemes to get people open. Not sure if our O line could do what theirs did in protection to achieve what they did. Sure looked impressive to me.

Without 8 and 10 on offense we are in big trouble.  I like our qb, but we need to let him throw more. He can be a top qb in my opinion. Makes big plays under pressure, can run and throw well.

To much of our offense reminded me of our spring season. Won't pass no matter what and just run the ball. Makes it very difficult for our running game. We will see if these young coaches can grow into what is needed. I think they will recruit well in the long run which we desperately need. We will see.

Exciting game!  Definitely need to throw the ball on 1st down but I understand that coach wants to establish the run game and in this league you have to!  8 is a stud. Hands down!  10 is going to develop into a great QB. I would imagine that the defensive coaches were not looking forward to opening up with this passing team. Not sure that you can get ready for that in week one.  Special teams were great. Made the difference. Reminded me of Tressel ball. Win the special teams battle- the third part of the game. This team wants to play until the last snap!  Can’t argue with that. Has been missing for a long time. They want to win for the coaches and their team!

Go Guins!

Winning mask many problems:  Our staff a bad night.  Big time questions about our offensive coordinator.
1. What were we doing at the end of the half.   Have the ball at our own 38 and we don't try to get into field goal range.
2. The worst of the night, QB draw down three with 39 seconds and only one timeout.  You can't run the ball in that situation, ever.
3. Scared to throw the ball down field.  Ogletree a huge target gets two catches early, then never throw to him again.

As for Crenshaw, have no idea yet if he can make plays down the field.  On the positive side, thank God we have Mclaughlin, and McFadden clutch kick to send into overtime.

Nice win but didnt need to be that close.  Lots of mistakes but hey, it’s the opener against a great offense.
