Title: Needs for football 2020
Post by: IAA Fan on December 01, 2019, 11:43:59 AM
Okay here is something I would like to see us take a stab at.

To give us some football to talk about, during the off-season. I would like to each of us choose up to 5 things off of this list that you feel need the most work for 2020. If you pick more than one, feel free to rank them. I deliberately did not place coaching on this list, as we have little incite, but feel free to mention coaching on your choices. For example, if you think that a particular problem can be corrected with coaching (as opposed to player changes), by all means say so. Maybe we can create a smaller list with more detail off of this thread?

1. Offensive Line
2. Defensive end
3. Corners
4. Running backs (this may not be as much an issue with a better line)
5. Safeties

So we need an entirely new roster?

We don't need to replace everything. I thought the cheerleaders were OK.
1AA confused me at first also, but I believe he was listing everything so we could pick our individual priorities.  For me it’s coordinators (both) #1 OL #2  IF we get those two areas shaped up, I’m good to go.  HOWEVER OL isn’t that easy to work on quickly.  Almost every new recruit needs a redshirt year, and we need help in 2020.  I am extremely pleased with how the freshman played late in the season, and it gives me hope.  Would love to see Carl go back to D and a OC with spread formation experience on O for Waid.  Remember, we have Mark for 4 MORE YEARS!  Makes me want to say MAKE YSU GREAT AGAIN!

You didn't add coaching? How about adding D'alesios to your list. we definitely need to address those as well.

I mean choose up to 5 things off of the list and we could talk. The areas that you feel need the most work. I wanted to have coaching with it's own thread. As to young guys, I am not certain that they are any different than what we have now ...weak and small. The good thing is they have 1 extra year. However, this just mean two more years of mediocrity while we try to build.

1. offensive line
2. defensive line

I agree 100%  I watch Tom Brady and you know what?  He is a POOR OB when laying on his back!  If the OL doesn't improve, we won't improve.

It all begins with coaching:
1. Hire an aggressive Recruiting Coordinator who has connections with high school coaches.
2. Fire Brian Crist, hire an O Coordinator who is innovative and creative and coaches to his talent.
3. Tall corners, are corners are too small and lack ability to be physical.
4. Running backs are average, need stud.
5. O line is awful, is it the talent, the new O line coach, or both?

Can confirm OL coach John Peterson is staying.

Chief, I am not a fan of Peterson, offensive line regressed significantly under Peterson.   He has coached at many places, but keeps moving from job to job, that is not a good sign.

My opinion on your 5 points
1. Recruting would be helped with an agressive coordinator, but recruting is up to the "closer" also called the heae coach.
2. Agreed
3. Guys our size are all pro in the NFL, CBs are shorter than WR generally, issue is where are they, not how tall are they. Size is fine, talent has been a little off.  Younger guys showed reason to be hopeful however.
4. We haven't shown even average talent at RB, and we definitely need a stud.
4B Both

1.  O-Line!!!  Athletic, maneuverable, footwork, can pull, get downfield!!
2.  D-Line!! - Athletic, quick, footwork and can stop the run!
3.  A stellar running back! - It has been the trademark of this program for years!
4.  D-Backs!  Can cover man, smart, can fill the run like maniacs (something our current defensive coordinator could not do) and lay the wood!
5.  QB's - at least two QB's that can play in this league!  Strong arm, leader, supported when makes mistake!  NDSU has Trey Lance for the next three years!  Waid must make giant strides over the course of the winter and spring!

Also - bring back the spring game, later in the year if necessary so that the weather is not a factor but the fans need to see the product!  If you are worried about players getting hurt then control it more like Tressel did - Red Zone Scrimmage, etc...I think not having that game is a cop-out.

Nice choices Stick. Yes, Bo does not have spring game because he does not have a complete product. I would further say that we need 2 running backs ... Thunder and Lightning.

Cook, Bellamy and Pace.
Adrian Brown and Jake Andreades
Tamron Smith and Leo Hawkins
Tamron Smith and Darnell Clark
Jamain Cook and Jody Webb

These twosomes span 3-decades and were just phenomenal.

This is going to look like everyone elses Im afraid.

1. O-line. If I could make this #1 through #5 I would. I'm surprised we won as many games as we did with that tackle play.

2. Coordinators. Move Carl to D Coordinator. Get a recruiting coordinator. A new O coordinator wouldn't break my heart.

3. Kicker. Find a kid that can put kickoffs into the end zone 80% of the time or more. That's all he has to do if he can place kick that's a bonus.

4 D End. Wow do we lose a lot here.

5. Cornerbacks - We ask our CB to play a lot of press man. Assuming we lose Reed, and the fact we are losing Richmond and Bynum our corners are going to have to stick with their men even longer next year. The kids we have now, for whatever reason, don't attempt to turn their heads and locate the ball, resulting in a ton of PI penalites. That needs to change they are a big Achilles heel and will be exploited big time next season unless something changes schematically or talent wise.

Are we losing Reed?  IF we loose Reed and Richmond then your point #4 is 100% valid, but I think there is a good chance at least one, and maybe both are back.

I hope you are right. I have no inside info here, but if I was a coach trying to project what I need next year I'd work under the assumption that those guys are walking until they tell me otherwise. Getting both back would be amazing, we'd have the best D-line in the FCS. Someone like Carl can do wonders with that, and it can cover a lot of other shortcomings on that side of the ball.

I agree 100% with your "hope for the best, but plan on the worst" approach.  That's all that makes any sense, and I'm sure that's the staff's approach, but the joy of being a blogger and not a coach is we don't have to plan for anything!  I believe Richmond is applying for another year and "walking" is probably the wrong term.  If they let him, he'll be back.  I believe Reed has a future on Sunday, and he has a change of another injury if he plays for "free" again, so his case is different, but we'll see.
