Does anyone know if the East Stands will be open this year ? Also if they will retain the handicap parking behind the stands .
-
1. I don't have the answer to your question, and I often react negatively to what I read as defeatism among our fellow posters. That being said, on the issue of the stands being open is a "who cares?" issue at this point. I sense -0- enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming season, and I would assume ticket sales would love to be "flat." We have a coach that seems to treat the press and the fan base at best as a necessary evil. Coming off a 4-7 disastrous season, you'd think Bo would at least try to be accommodating and develop some support, but not this guy. When asked about a spring game, he says: "we'll do something." WTF is "something"? OSU draws 10's of thousands of fans, encourages fans to take photos with the players, does special uniforms etc. Makes an event out of the spring game and Bo says, "we'll do something". Sometimes I wonder.............
The handicap parking is obviously a totally different question, but I would only assume the university would be VERY sensitive to access concerns.

According to the Vindy from December:
The Don Constantini Multimedia Center project above the east side stands of Stambaugh Stadium is in progress, costing $3 million. It is expected to be completed in July 2019
in May 2018 WKBN says:
Construction will start soon and is expected to be done by August 2019.

Everything is on schedule and will be done by football season.

Giving us another couple thousand additional empty seats? Great.
With diminishing interest, I assume we have diminished interest in TV coverage this fall, which was the catalyst to start this project in the first place? Now, instead the slum broadcast booth that reminded me of a hunting blind from a swamp at Mosquito Lake sitting empty on fall Saturday afternoons, we'll have classy new state of the art broadcast facility.............sitting empty on fall Saturday afternoons!

They're moving TV, radio for home and away teams all over there. Hardly going to be empty. Will look nice when completed.

So you are confirming we are going to have TV coverage? Great! I don't doubt it will "look great" but I'm more interested in it "working great" by being used for TV as was the original intended. I don't see, hear, or read ANYTHING about any TV coverage. I do appreciate WKBN broadcasting the game on radio, but I don't think we spent 3 million dollars to make them look directly into the sun when broadcasting did we?
The couple thousand additional empty seats will be fan seating, and they will not all be empty, but they will definitely be fans that would easily with on the west side as was the case last year.

I think that Chief is on here. There are quite a few students in the broadcasting program, with a strong association with athletics. We could have a whole new group of students in attendance. Even if we only picked up a couple of hundred, it could be another way to get student participation numbers up.

So you think we are going to fill the east stands with hundreds of media broadcast students that haven't been going to games previously because they were forced to sit under the Mosquito Lake hunting blinds, but will now come to games because they are sitting in the shadow of a brand new state of the art broadcast facility?
I'll let this go with, "I think you are pretty naive on this point".
I'd bet winning football will probably do more to fill the stands the an attachment to the broadcast facility, especially if the new facility is empty because we don't have a TV deal!
Many, if not most MVFC teams have local TV broadcasts. Want to grow fan interest, get the fans involved. TV can help and YSU is really dropping the ball with this. Even if YSU supplements the broadcasts, it will help draw fans.

Of course, but you be equally naive to think that more the 25% of the students come here for anything more than an education and will ever attend a sporting event. The school is pockets of students, if we get one pocket, they may help us get more. That is all I am saying. All of the broadcast students would not make much of a dent.

Music to my ears, long time season ticket holder and have been on the East side since it opened. Obviously had to use the west side last year and my group can't wait to move back.

Oh boy mister negative is at it again. Now he is in his glory using the deer, mosquito blind over and over.
My reliable source tells me that the University will be splitting the Communication Department away from the ?Arts Department soon and will have a school dedicated to television, radio, electronic broadcasting to call our own with majors and minors. The building on the East side is for YSU Education not necessarily to fill the stands. Or did mister negative forget that? Another slick move was to centralize the press into a new state of the art broadcast facility sorely needed to free up space for more loges. I understand there is quite of backup of request for loges. (We may have to build another level on top of the two levels especially with the renovations planned/coming to the loges in the future).

All of this will be great news. I started out in the broadcasting program at YSU. Back then, you were allowed to create your own major, as long as it met the standards of a given school. I guess I watched too much "WKRP in Cincinnati" as a kid, so I created a major in broadcast management; hoping to own a radio or TV station some day. So I had 2 majors Speech, Communications & Theatre ...along with my degree major in Business Management. The broadcasting was a welcomed break from some of the academic grind and challenging in it's own ways.

What ELPENGUIN said is all true.

Anyone out there that can post a photo of what the East side looks like now?

Not much to see still. Nothing substantial is up. Still doing a lot of ground work and concrete.

Bummer, I figured there would be something worth seeing. Thanks

they have to get the east stands done because where will the overflow crowd sit

YSU1 has hit the nail on the head. Yeah, those 2 anti-social guys need someplace to set, "Far from the madding crowd"!
-
This Athletic Department just doesn't seem to get it! With social media they should post pics of what has been done on the east side regardless of how big or small.

While IMO you're right in your observation, I can come up with TONS of much better examples here the Ath. Dept. doesn't get it!

agree
-
I got a call from the ticket office today about picking up season tickets.
When I mentioned the East stands, he stated that the parking lot there will be a new tailgate lot. $175 per season.
If you were hoping for low cost handicap spots to return you're out of luck.
-
So the ONLY revenue stream (Stambugh Stadium) they have and they neglect to advertise major upgrades to alumni and fans. Mind you social media is FREE. And to add insult to injury the structure is for COMMUNICATIONS MAJORS...
-
Like I said, not much to see yet. Still doing a lot of foundation work. You'll see a lot more coming in the next month or so.
-
Good progress is being made.
-
Maybe we can get together and start a gofundme site for Chief, so he can ditch the flip phone a acquire a smart phone with a built in camera so he could post a picture or 2 of "Good progress being made"?
Google is too slow and the Vindy makes google look like real time.
-
If I could figure out how to upload pics on here I would lol.

Hey my flip phone has a camera, even does color. My season tickets are offered on the east side again, wondering if we will be able to enter on the east side or have to walk around

That's the TROUBLE WITH OLD GUYS! (I think I'm the oldest regular poster on this site)
My son, the HIGHLY paid computer geek, says "it's no problem!"

I was watching the opening of an OLD James Bond move the other day and he had this state-of-the-art bag phone in his car. We've come a long way baby! A car without seat heaters, blind spot warning or navigation system? Unthinkable!

Steel is up

Great! Just so long as YSU is taking care of every minority group, that's all that matters! The "anti-socials" have been ignored far too long!

Thanks! I didn't notice the 2 anti-social guys, they must have been and McD's for a senior coffee, but I'm sure they'll be back for gameday! One of the twitter comments was something about being basically a press box. I thought that was EXACTLY what it was going to be? I know they will have some training/class facilities, but this was always about replacing the embarrassing TV press bos, wasn't it?
-
It's a press box with classrooms in the back. All home and away TV and Radio booths are going over there. Scoreboard operator, public address and instant replay as well. The booths where they used to be on the west side will be used to create 4 more loges.

yep, it was a good plan and long overdue from day one. Glad to see it moving ahead. Now all we need is a TV deal!
-
Multimedia Center is really taking shape if you get a chance to drive by.
-
Wasn’t the original plan to add loges to the other side. From whet I gather they could raise enough money to that. It’s been a botched expansion from the outset.

They're adding loges on the home side.

Yes they are adding loges in the spots vacated by the media. But originally they were adding loges on the east side as well. I guess we didn’t raise enough cash

If anybody has ever watched YSU football on TV, you couldn't help but notice the view from the "East" stands, It looks directly "West" (funny how that works) and directly INTO the sun each afternoon. Terrible place for loges. Looks like somebody got the call right on no East stands loges! Terrible place to televise a game from also, but since we don't seem to have a TV deal, guess that point is mute.

Been on the East side since it opened, very rare that the sun was even close to being an issue. Considering that the camera will be higher than my seats therefore a better angle, I would not think that there is an issue here.

"Been on the East side since it opened," Is that the same as saying "I've never watched the game on TV?" If you had you would have noticed the very bad glare problem and every televised afternoon game.

I have watched replays of games and do not recall a very bad glare, maybe my glasses need cleaned.

Here's a cool picture from ScoutingOhio's Mark Porter of campus yesterday with a drone up in the sky. Can see where Cafaro Field is going in on the bottom left and then where the parking lot is going in next to the east stands and the new press box.

Thanks for the post!! Both offer great prospective, (close and overall) and are very informative.
Frankly another accent color might be good with our boring old red and black, but perhaps that green isn't just right!

Thanks for the East Stands photos, this looks wonderful. Occasionally, we can get a view of the East side"s new addition via WKBN's weather cameras. Again thanks for the photos, I hope to get to one of the games this fall.

Um, It was the plan to add them there. Something went wrong. Loges=$$$$$ and I think that the issues they had with the first contsruction company they chose caused them to pivot due to funding.

With the new parking lot seems as tho the north side entrance for the beeghly center will/should be updated at some point as well?

I vote for spending -0- on Beeghly until we have a plan (and funding) for significant upgrades. I'm thinking in the 75-100 million range. If that sounds like a lot, and it does to me, check these out recent remodel projects:
U of Vermont 95 million
U of Dayton 72 million
U of Ill 30 million for upgrades to PRACTICE facility
U of Alaska 110 million
All basketball, all updates to existing facilities. We don't need an upgraded North entrance, we need to give Calhoun the tools to do his job successfully!
-
Go Guins I like your thought process on a total facelift but we need somebody to write a big check for about 50 million and maybe the state could fork out 25 million or so. We lost a big voice down in Columbus when Harry Meshel would get money for so many YsU projects. Strollo has done a great job of doing small projects with money from the Penguin Club and from the Cafaro’s and other local businessman

What is that on his page? Poland? Is there not a DI college in your city? I live in Upper Arlington OH, they have a DI football team. Gee let's take look at how many major Columbus sports media figures have anything but Buckeyes, Blue Jackets or Crew (90%+ will be buckeyes) on their web pages. Think small ... be small. Media center will be done next week! Looking really good!
Also, the space vacated by the coaches and radio booths on the west side have been converted into loges so more revenue coming in. All in all, a good project.
