It doesn't matter who the head coach is going forward because some of our assistants are just that bad. We lack the players offensively to have a good year in 2019..It will be ugly in conference play..Hopefully we can go 2-1 in our cupcake non conference schedule

I don’t understand wth is going on with the FB program.  Strollo should have demanded we get some better asst. coaches.  So Youngstown to go with the homer and accept mediocrity.

Pelini wants his hometown boys. Doesn't wanna pay. Same as in Nebraska.

Is TRESS ok with this.

Apparently winning is not a priority of Mr. Strollo, the administration or the big money backers.  Until this changes we will continue to be a mid level FCS team.

I see these opinions all the time.  I think people need to accept the reality that YSU in particular and Youngstown and area in general are short on capitol.  YSU is doing the best they can with limited resources.  One might argue that these limited resources should be allocated differently, but they are limited.  It would be nice if the basketball arena could be updated, if we could add more sports, if we could fund minor sports more, and if downtown Youngstown could be updated and expanded.  We just do not have the funds or people in the community with those funds.  Look at Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Akron Canton, and you see more prosperity. Don't blame the President or Athletic Director for a lack of funds.

Winning consistently will bring funds.  YSU is a football school and football is all that matters.

Downtown is definitely picking up. Strollo and Tressel have done a good job updating and building new facilities. Campus by this time next year will look completely different than 10, heck even 5 years ago. Football is the big money maker though and if this program doesn't consistently win, it sets things back.

Agreed!  Have to upgrade the assistant coaching and coordinators.  I wonder if we will have a spring game this year so we can get a look at some of the talent, especially at QB?  I am more pessimistic than optimistic at this time.

You still have to recruit quality football players.  It does not seem like we are doing that. We could not beat a 4-7 non scholarship Butler team.
Since 2000 we have been to the play-offs only 3 times.  Why is this acceptable.
And we wasted a year on a senior transfer qb.  Why did we not try the younger kids to see what we have at quarterback.  We were losing anyway.

The comments at the end of the article...the Nebraska fans still have hatred for him that is seething to this day.

We all knew Bo was staying. He wants his kids to all graduate from Mooney. He will sign a 3 year deal and then leave once that contract expires.

I do not necessarily agree Chief. I think he sees what one Jim Tressel accomplished right out of YSU and hopes for a similar result. I do not think he came for any other reason. I do think he expected it a bit sooner than than it will come though.

He came for 2 reasons. He hates dealing with the media and all the scrutiny and he couldn't handle it at a big time program when he was losing big game after big game up in Nebraska where all they care about is football 24/7. He and his wife also really want their kids to have the catholic education and graduate from Mooney. Facts.

Chief, you are correct, but he doesn't seem to be able to handle the media in Youngstown.  He blows off radio and TV shows, when players were suspended a few years ago during the playoffs, that was butchered by YSU as well.

As for doing what Tressel did, thats over!  Not going to happen again in our lifetime!   Winning 3 titles in 4 years, 4 in a decade, once in a lifetime stuff.   Playoffs every 3 of 4 years should be the goal.  With 24 teams, its not that hard.

I am not so sure. NDSU just won their 7th in less than 10-years. App State, Georgia Southern all had multiple championships, mostly back-to-back.. Johnson was hired at Navy, then Georgia Tech.

1AA, You are obviously correct, but I read YSUFAN as thinking it wasn't possible at YSU, not 1AA in general.  I agree with you, I think it is as possible at YSU as it ever was.

I played for Wolford (not Pelini). From my observations, it seems as if Wolford was one heck of a recruiter (top notch), and Pelini is one heck of a coach. Unfortunately you typically don't get both. Look at when we were in the FCS Championship (most of the players were Wolf's) but were coached by Pelini. A lot also has to be said about the assistants. Wolf could recruit them as well (Mangino for example), unfortunately is seems that Pelini seems to be lacking in that department as well.
Just some food for thought as they both are local guys with the same 'local homeboys'.

It will get done some time next month. 3 year deal.

I do think Bo is one heck of a defensive coach probably best in the business. He also deeply cares about his players and the life after football aspect for them. Unfortunately this is only a small fraction of what it takes to be a successful head coach these days. My problem is his loyalty with his assistants, puts to much faith in what they are doing and really doesn't hold them accountable..zero organization in my opinion with the staff working together as one. He has brought in some good transfers during his time, but probably one to many and it continues to hurt the chemistry of the team. How about the players that are recruited here by Bo out of high school? Let's get them developed when all is lost. The way the quarterback situation has been handled the last few years is a perfect example of what I mean. Bottom line here is when you continue to have losing seasons and fail to make the playoffs it's extremely hard to recruit the players you need. The selling points for the recruits of going to a great university with great facilities means very little..Its all about the success of the programs these days

In a perfect world,,,, Bring Tress out of his President office, Bo to DC, and Wolf as recruiting coordinator  8)

Good conversation. Wolf's biggest issue was his hiring of two poor DC's. Then he booted so many players his first year, it scared off recruits. Then when we were able to land coach Shane we were losing games while putting up record numbers on offense. Look at the numbers, there is not one Wolf era top-9 player in Tackles, Solo Tackles, Assists, Sacks, Break-ups. One thing that I will say about Bo ...I think that he is used to top-notch recruits (and recruiting staff) at Nebraska. The average recruit at out level needs work. I am not sure that Bo and staff put enough into the fundamentals. If Tress came back, to the sidelines, I would like to think that he would hire Heacock before Bo. Heacock brings MVFC history. They are Complimenting coaches & less chance of conflict.

I always thought the best recruiter OSU ever had was John Cooper.  On game day, he couldn't hold a candle to Tressel, but he was a great recruiter.  (JT's 2002/3 national championship was mostly Coop recruits)
ysubigred, to say you're stretching things a bit would be an understatement.  Why not have Jaws come back and QB with Tamron as RB?

And Montgomery put up yards agathe little sisters of the poor but couldn't score on elite teams either.  Those are the facts take it or leave it.  Now we have an OC woth no scheme.  Montgomery had a short yardage death by a thousand cuts strategy that allowed defenses to load the box and shut down the entire thing.  The only time I saw it change was during the run to the NC with Bo.  Wells threw deep passes and we won a lot of games.  That being said, I watched us piss down out legs way too many times to offset one good season

Power, you are making my point. Saying that we could not score against good teams is simply not the truth. Your team is not always going to make its average of 34.8 PPG. That would obviously be against the better teams. My real point was that we never had any defense to pick up the slack, in 7 of the 8 years that coach Shane was here. BTW, I do not think any team should be winning games on offense. This is YSU and we play in the MVFC. You don't see NDSU winning games on offense. We need to shut down opponents, not beat them to the finish line. Keeping your opponent out of the end-zone is just as important as scoring. IMO, much more important. If I am playing SDSU next week, I know they have the #2 defense in the league (allowing an average of only 23 PPG), so I am not expecting to get 34.8 points ...maybe 24 or 21. That is perfectly normal and if your defense cannot keep SDSU below 21, then we are going to lose.

Look at 2010, that was just a random pick, but we did have that mistake Kravitz as a DC, the guy that everyone was excited about ... Mr Florida/SEC.

We average 31.27 PPG on offense and 31.55 PPG on defense. In 5 games, we scored more points than we did against Butler that same season. We had 4 really good drives at Penn State and 14-points. We scored 31 against SIU and almost lost as SIU missed a FG to tie. We scored 25 against SMS, but gave up 35 (and I am willing to admit that 25 was below average & we did have a TO). We scored 38 against WIU and gave up 40. Scored 30 against UNI and gave up 34. I am willing to admit that Hess had a terrible game (4 INT's) against a decent ISU, but we gave up just under 500-yards on defense. Yes, it would have been close, but 24-points should have won that game. All but 1 of ISU's scores followed turn overs.

We can go back and forth about assitant coaches all day long. Who had better ones, whose were worse. At the end of the day Pelini made it to the NC with almost all of Wolfs players and has done NOTHING with his guys.
