Have the AD get a better game.... Snooze fest.
-
Depth chart is out.
Becker, Sharp, Vitas, Wiggins, Baldwin on the O-Line.
Louigene, Smith, Thompson, Bynum on the D-Line.
Bo had high praise for Bryant starting at safety in his press conference.

Have the AD get a better game.... Snooze fest.
They should schedule Mount Union instead of these non scholarship d1s like butler. Similar... likely better level of competition and they are just down the road so more of a local game.
-
Would get a bigger crowd if they scheduled Mooney or Ursuline.
-
I'm sure nebraska fans are saying something similar about Akron. go support your team sometimes a couple of cupcakes give time to work on some critical issues
-
I'll be there for sure. One thing I got really excited to hear in the press conference is the new offensive schemes under the new OC. We are going to run a multiple set from what was described. Very intrigued to see how that goes.

YOUNGSTOWN — When it comes to college football, major roster overhauls are rather normal on a year-to-year basis.
Students graduate or run out of eligibility, and incoming or redshirt freshmen step in along with players most people have never heard of because they were on the scout team. New leaders form and different players make names for themselves.
At Youngstown State, the roster is only part of the sweeping changes.
The Penguins, who open the season at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium against Butler, also are replacing their offensive and defensive coordinators. They shuffled numerous other assistant coaches around to different roles to compensate for the losses.
None of this is fazing head coach Bo Pelini. He is as confident as he has ever been as he enters his fourth season at YSU.
“We’re ready,” said Pelini, who later detailed how the changes have mended this team. “I like our staff a lot. It’s a young staff, but they have energy. They’re smart guys. They’re really good workers, and they communicate with players well.
“There’s a good relationship between the players and coaches in this program. It’s not like the coaches are up here and the players are down here. It’s a pretty laid-back atmosphere. It’s an atmosphere that I would hope our players feel good about walking in the door everyday. We have fun, but when it’s time to work, we work.”
One of the most notable changes on the field is at quarterback, where Notre Dame transfer Montgomery VanGorder is taking over for three-year starter Hunter Wells, who graduated. VanGorder battled with junior Nathan Mays during camp before Mays suffered an injury that has kept him out for the last two-plus weeks. Mays is out for this week’s game.
VanGorder, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound graduate transfer, never played any significant minutes under center with the Fighting Irish. In fact, Saturday will be his first start since high school.
“Well, I got a couple snaps last year in (South Bend), toward the end of some games, but nothing really meaningful,” VanGorder said. “The key word I’d use for myself is excited. When you get into the game, you can’t really replicate that in practice, how you handle certain situations, how your guys respond to you in the huddle. That kind of thing. We have a pretty good feel for where we are and how we’re going to come out and play.”
VanGorder leads an offense that looks a little different than years past.
Offensive coordinator Brian Crist takes over for Shane Montgomery, who left for the same position at UNC-Charlotte after last season.
Pelini said there won’t be major alterations to the scheme, which was centered around a power running game during Montgomery’s tenure, but tweaks have certainly occurred.
Pelini and VanGorder hinted that a more balanced attack with a variety of formations could be on the horizon.
“We’re very multiple in what we’re doing,” Pelini said. “We have depth. We have weapons at every position. I feel really good with where we are. Montgomery has been with us since the spring, and he’s had an excellent camp. … What I’m looking for is a high level of execution, and we’ve been doing that through camp.”
Despite the jettison of Carl Pelini, Bo’s younger brother, the elder Pelini said not much is different with the defense.
That’s in large part because Bo was one of the architects of the schemes. A longtime defensive coach, Pelini has pieced together one of the nation’s most consistent and successful defenses.
“Even though we’ve lost some coordinators,” Pelini said, “obviously with me being a defensive guy and having hands on the defense, it’s been a seemingly easy transition.”
Overall, the changes and different roles haven’t affected the Penguins. In fact, Pelini said the chemistry of both the coaching staff and the team is as good it has ever been during his tenure.
“That’s a good thing,” he said. “You never get to exactly where you want to be, culture wise, as a head football coach, but we’re pretty close. We’re a lot closer than we have been.”

Oh come on. Butler would smack Mount Union around. Same crap every year. Our schedules have been excellent for years now. This year we have the second-best (preseason) team in the Big-12, and 6 top-25 teams from our own level. What more do you want and still make the post-season?
-
Relax IAA Fan. I am not going to attack Montgomery! But he and Bo had a forced partnership that made neither individual particularly happy. Now Bo has his own man as OC, a guy he brought with him from Nebraska. Bo now "owns" the offense as he should.
Much of the preseason on this board has focused on the injuries (of course) and on the suspect play of the offensive line. On Bo's radio show on Monday, Ed Muransky was gushing in his praise of that unit. Was that just hype from the new radio analyst or an objective opinion from a former NFL lineman? I guess we will find out by the middle of conference play.
-
There is no need to schedule 2 non scholarship or low level scholarship teams. It helps nobody. We have done little to figure out how to win in a conference we should not be in. What is it 3 playoff appearances in 28 years. Anyways if we can’t keep the QB upright and healthy it will be another wasted year. I hope it isn’t.

I agree. We don't seem to benefit from the 2 weenie bowls when it comes to conference play. The only positive to me is they count as a D1 win. These are very positive for Strollo. He sells loge tickets for those, same as if we played anyone else, so why not go cheap and easy with a team that won't require a home and home? This is what's best for business.
Fan interest simply doesn't enter into the equation.

Dead wrong. Why can't we schedule another top FCS program ? Home and home ? Instead we schedule 2 weenie games to fill the loges and get the money. They don't care about butts in the seat.
-
While everyone is talking about loges, did anyone else pick up on what pelini said about the loges? Listen to right at 12:25 in. He talks about how "It is going to be hard to get the program to where we want it to be without getting consistent support from the community and start getting the stands filled up. Its harder to recruit." and then... "We have had good support. We get great support from a solid base."
"Another thing that I have talked about, is we have those great loges up there, and I know people enjoy their loges and they pay money to be in those loges, but I would love to have those people come out of their loges where we feel their presence. Come out of those loges so we can hear them and they are out in the stands. And you can go back and forth. You know our players bust their butts year round. Its not about me or the coaches, its never been its about the kids. Year round when you put the effort that they do for the university and the community they deserve the support."
Starts talking about how he would line our team out against any D1 school in the country. Anybody. People talk about BCS but we play a high level of football. I don't care who they are, I will line us up and we will play.
All that ends around 15:15. So its like 3 minutes but very interesting to hear his response.

Yeah I liked his response about lining up against anyone in the country. I wish he would have cited taking Pitt to overtime last year and being tied with WVU at halftime two years ago, clearly we can compete with fbs teams.

You know Butler is non scholarship rignt? No reason to think they are any better than a good d3 team. I’d honestly rather have us play a d2 school then these pioneer league d1 in name only teams.
I think our SOS is fine, just hate these games because they are boring. I know why we do it, but I don’t have to like it. Again, schedule Ashland or Walsh, at least they are bringing some scholarship level talent.

I agree, same crap year after year. You have explained this time and time again. If you are a YSU fan you will be at every game no matter who they play, plain and simple.
-
It is still a garbage game. NDSU opens with CalPoly I think. We should be playing full fcs scholarship teams. I will never agree with the pussified scheduling.
-
Some of the best D2 teams in the country or in Western PA. Cal U, IUP, and SRU are all better options than Butler IMO. IUP has some real talent and as many D1 transfers as most FCS schools. IUP would give us a better game than Butler or Duquesne.

Have the AD get a better game.... Snooze fest.
My team will be playing, why would I snooze?
Game will over by half. Snooooooooze.
When's the last time a real FCS opponent not in the MVFC came to Stambaugh ?
Mr. Strollo too worried about filling up the loges and trying to make money than giving a crap about the regular fan who wants to see a good football game.
-
For those of you who are relatively new here, understand that Ron Strollo is an accountant by training and by inclination. His business plan for the OOC schedule is to maximize the yield from the P5 game while paying out as little as possible for the two FCS home games. That means games against phony FCS teams from the Pioneer Conference and semi-phony FCS teams from the NEC. I hate this. Most of you hate this. But it will not change.
Why not schedule D2 teams? We can't, thanks to the bizarre world of the NCAA. It would be suicide since the NCAA refuses to count, for playoff selection purposes, any wins against D2 opponents, no matter how worthy. Instead, the NCAA grants the Pioneer League an automatic berth in the playoffs and fantasizes that wins against that conference count toward your playoff resume. You can't blame Strollo for this one.

Wofford, playoffs 2016. Although, I recognize in the spirit of your comment you were referring to planned before the beginning of the year rather than due to playoffs.

Okay so name a single FCA team that will increase the draw (over a Butler-type team) by more that a dozen "butts"? We are in the MVFC, not the Big-10 ... There isn't one. So why in the heck are you going to schedule a potential loss for no reason? Most People in Ytown do not even know where North Dakota is on the map and even fewer care. Most only know JMU as a basketball school. They all know Butler as an MBB power in the Big East.
-
Scheduling is about building relationships. This AD has awesome relationships with bottom feeder no scholly programs. We can’t schedule an out of conference scholly team that is lower level. Scheduling cupcakes hasn’t been the winning playoff formula dont u agree. Again we have struggled in this conference to be a top 3 team. Time to rethink that or we are just another lower tier team like Indiana St. remember we have only made the playoffs since Tressel 2 times.
-
yes and Tressel scheduled more "cupcakes" than any AD/scheduler we ever had. We are looking for home game revenue dollar$ and nothing is more important. The only way that we would see more $$ over a home cupcake opponent (as we pay them less) is another money-game. Then we would be scheduling 2-losses every year and likely scheduling ourselves out of the play-off every year. Taking into account all of the important factors ...ticket sales, ad sales, tailgate revenue, concession revenue, lower expense payed out to the opponent ... There is no better way then what we do now ...nothing other than the continuous MAC conversation..
-
Hey there will be 19,000 people there. Oh wait that was for a concert. Too bad they cannot count that toward the yearly attendance.
-
The day we get 19,00 for a home game... Lol.

And speaking of the Wofford game, as I recall there were more then a few empty seats. So a quality team, a playoff game to boot and empty seats.
-
Well it will be tighter than usual, as they are not placing the band or student section in portable bleachers, as they should. We will be warmer than in recent years with tha added body heat :)

Not a chance Dan

I know this has been talked about several times. But, playing two stiff teams is unacceptable. One is fine. But playing Butler and Valpo is like the Globetrotters against the Washington Nationals. We would beat these teams by double digits 100 times in a row. It is a joke to charge money for two of these games. Have some balls and go schedule JMU, Villanova, Richmond, etc... The crowd tomorrow will be very small.

Yes, the Globetrotters would beat the Nationals 99 out of 100 times; so are you taking the kids to see the Nationals, or the Globetrotters? Youngstown is the only town I have even been in where people look for excuses not to attend games and then justification for why they did not. You should be mad because the other side of Stambaugh is closed and we are going to run out of seats, as that is the ONLY way that consistent attendance will ever happen. No visiting opponent will EVER make that happen. That is unless you have a personal relationship with Urban Myer and we should expect the Buckeyes at some point. Heck even then, I am sure that some of the die-hard desperate will find an excuse not to go.
Do you know that U Delaware has average attendance of just over 18k per game? By my calculations that makes Bue hen Stadium the 4th-largest city in the entire state of Delaware for about 3-hours per Saturday and how many times have they been above .500 in the last 10-years?
Sunshine beginning at 8a, beer, food, a fly-over (so I have heard) and a mystery YSU team playing tomorrow. So show up and see if you like them. Go Guins!!

Your right they probably should be on the West side but I get a lot of laughs watching the students taunt the visiting team during the game.

About to leave to show up ;D

Maybe a tougher game than expected. Oh man

This team wins maybe 4 games. Wow

That’s what i predicted.

Boooooooooooooooo

Well this will be a long year.

This one is on the coaches the team and the fans. First game and nobody cares? Apparently the author of this question didn't ask Butler. Butler played a great game and deserved the win..congratulations Bulldogs. We on the other hand have some work to do and that includes the fan base.

O yardage penalties and 0 turnovers.
-
A very well disciplined team that took the game seriously and really wanted the win.

Why the fan base? Stadium looked full. Granted could have been louder on 3rd down and such.

We are a HS team

What a disgrace and embarresment. Coach Pelini should be ashamed.

Agreed. This is the most disgraceful loss in the history of the program! He has a lot to answer to Strollo! That was embarrassing at the least! Bo should seriously consider giving up the program! The good days are gone!!

You can choose to believe me or not but I was there. Stadium looked pretty full (but that is probably also because the seating on the east side is closed). In any case, I cannot promise you it will be that full for the next home game. After today's performance I'm not sure you will see a crowd like today again (although I hope for the team's sake they do)

But honestly the core of loyal YSU fans that know that Butler is non scholarship is pretty small. I think most casual fans in the area probably just think it’s a bummer that they lost the home opener. I wouldn’t be that surprised to see a big crowd against Valpo... depending on the weather.

Ah but the Vindicator and the Tribune have identified that they are non-scholarship. Even while his column said to put down the pitchforks, Ed Pukas drew parallels between YSU's loss and Michigan vs App State (coincidentally YSU's loss occuring on the anniversary of that game and because it probably is just as big a loss in comparison with Butler being non scholarship).
I guess my point is, while I agree many did not know before, if they read the paper, they know now. :'(
-
All interest lost.
-
No parallels between YSU's loss and Michigan vs App State. Appy State was the defending national 1AA champs, had full scholarships on the 1AA level, and most importantly had TONS of SPEED. Butler has none of the above. NDSU would have scored 70 on Butler.

Agree, we had a gap of 60 something scholarships on Butler vs a gap of only 25 ish? Between app state and Michigan.... and as mentioned app state was a great team.
