Title: Robert Morris
Post by: FOOTBALLFEVER on September 04, 2017, 09:02:07 AM
Home opener week is officially here. Robert Morris edged Dayton by a field goal on Saturday 13-10. We need to role in this game and cant have a repeat of 2015 after the Pitt game. Does the Northeast conference offer more scholarships for football then years past? Watched some of their game against the flyers and they both appear to be better program's then previous years

Bobby has some athletes. I believe they have an FBS transfer QB. Need to come out swinging and put this one away early. Get the younger kids some playing time to help continue to build the depth.

Chief, plus it's their 1st win in 17 years against Dayton. Across the board they are just as big as us if not bigger with very good speed. They have very tall wide-outs that can go up and get the ball and a very hard nosed running back that is a local kid from Northeast ohio..Need to be ready know doubt about it

Fever, I think that I read somewhere that the NEC offers 45 scholarships.  Not sure if that is accurate or if RMU offers their maximum.  One thing to keep in mind about their game with Dayton; the Flyers played without their veteran starting quarterback.

The next two weeks are all about us: how the young guys develop and if we can sustain the intensity that we demonstrated in the second half.  The letdown against RMU in Bo's first season (before the culture change) is unlikely to repeat itself.

I think it says here about scholarships. Honestly a lot of kids played last week.  These games give experience to the backups and hopefully the starters get protected if we can blow these teams out early. Truthfully we all know we struggle with these games intensity wise.

What's the old cliche?  "size doesn't matter"?  Well, in this case it doesn't.  While RMU may be as big up front as YSU, YSU is about as big up front at the Browns.  Quickness and strengh are a factor, not just bulk.  This was a last second win against Dayton, but we should clean house without a doubt.  The last time following Pitt should be a wakeup call for YSU.
Anybody who reads these threads may have noticed I have been concerned about DE play.  Well, Reid didn't disapoint!  We got beat up front, both sides of the ball, nearly every play in the first half, but the second half was a complete turnaround.  Great coaching job!

Pitt probably felt the same way. How about the play from the new faces on the offensive line and Ragland filling in on the Defensive line? Narduzzi was just besides himself that his front five on defense couldn't get any kind of a push the entire game in his post game conference. That was one nervous coach on the sidelines in the 4th quarter

Well to be fair they got plenty of push the first 2 quarters. We couldn't stop the run at all. Getting Savon back will help a lot. He's one of the best interior guys in the league.

If Pitt thought the same as ytown and go guins, then there should be some issues.  First, we are fans and can thing whatever we want.  Players and coachs need to stay in the game.  Second, we have a win, a one score loss and an OT loss in the last 3 trips to Pitt.  At some point if they think we are 20-30 point cupcakes then Narduzzi, staff and players ought to wake up.  I bet this is our last trip to Pitt with Pelini.  They have nothing to gain, but are getting close to a few loses.

I noticed in the polls that we went up a couple spots with the Pitt loss and EWU dropped with their loss.  I watched a lot of the EWU - Texas Tech game and EWU showed NOTHING.  You don't know anything about anybody until there are a few games under the belts, but Pitt was certainly better than TT last year.  Cupp was good, but not that good.  EWU hosts NDSU Saturday, and that should tell us something.

In fairness to the city of Youngstown, it is private contractors who are cutting cables and working at a snail's pace.  Consider that during World War II, we built entire industrial plants from scratch in under four months with 1940s technology.  Ah, the modern American work ethic.

You have to wonder, I know we ended up doing well defensively in the second half, but would we have been better in the first half with Savon? I think we would have. Would it have helped against the run is the question. We got gashed by the run game in the first half. Could have changed the game. Great what ifs. Still, YSU showed some heart against Pitt.

I think it wiould be less than 12. On Wednesday, I was at the ticket office selecting my seats after receiving free tickets from YSU. THe lower sections (other than 3, 4,5 ) were almost all empty. If it is the same for the upper sections, I can't imagine we will have more than 12k unless RM fans and our students pack the Easi Stands.

I will make this one post about attendance, then never comment upon the topic again.  Our fan base is half of what it was in the 90s.  Only an intelligent, aggressive marketing arm could rebuild some of the numbers.  Obviously, we don't have that.  So moaning about low attendance is pointless.  Enjoy the games and stop living in the past.

Wick is right.  Youngstown has lost have its population.  The majority of the town is fixed income, pension and low end  type wage earners.  People expect handouts and free tickets.  Where the money is is the loges and corporate sponsors.  Why do u think they are building more of those. The days of 17-20k are gone.  Plus students on campus for the most part don't care.  I think in the old days at least 2k would show up it seems now we are lucky to get 500.

For everybody who hated on Wells, you can see he is probably the best qb we have on the roster right now. Nothing against Mays, but he hasn't played the cleanest today. Again not knocking him. I do have faith he will win this game. But was watching this at work on my phone and noticed Hunter was out as soon as we got to redzone. Wasnt sure if he was hurt or if I missed a bad throw and Pelini wanted Mays in or something. I assumed he was hurt. ESPN guy didn't even mention the wells injury from what I heard. Admittedly have had spotty cell coverage and missed entire plays with the feed freezing so he may have mentioned it when I couldn't hear.

did a damn good job. How can you even think of complaining? Tell me that you did not have confidence he was going to win this game? That is your back-up & he had never even thrown a TD pass before today. Cut the guy some slack. His second series was a struggle, then he stepped up. His vision is very good, mobility above average for a drop-back. Passing ability is excellent, but consistency is not there and this why he is a back-up. If it never comes he may never be more than a back-up ...but I think it will be there. He was 13 of 16 for 150 & hit 9 different receivers. Not something we are accustomed to seeing from our reserves in the past. Right now we have to make some tough decisions at TB & that is a more pressing issue. Teams do not fear our ground attack & this puts more pressure on the QB.

I liked that 2 TE set Monty used on that drive that started in the 3rd & rolled into the 4th-quarter. Mays hit Kuhn over the top & then went back to Rader for the TD. I like Rader, but Shane  is a darn good TE (probably our best) and we need to get him more involved. Overall I was very happy with today's game. We pressured without a safety today ...two standouts that I saw today are Chapman and Braswell.

IAA are you watching the game or the disney channel. We will be fine (Bo Knows). I think we all can agree there were concerns(@Pitt) with all aspects of the game. Robert Morris isn't Pitt by a long shot. I did see some improvements. The TB's will be fine with MCCASTER and TURNER with the help of the other backs ( JOE, LONDON, ETC) the only TB that I know of that could run without a lineman blocking was Earl Campbell and he is sitting in Canton, OH.  I know we have this forum to discuss the best football team in America(my opinion) and if you don't know who that is let me be the first to tell you.....Its the YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS and if you don't share the same feelings get off this forum. ######GOGUINS!!!!!!!!!

Post by: The YO Show on September 10, 2017, 09:39:17 AM
From what I saw in the Pitt game, I think the pass protection was better than the rushing capabilities of the line, at least in the first half. Our oline really wore Pitt down in the second half and started getting bigger holes for our RBs. Now, I didn't see hardly any of the Robert Morris game despite my best attempts due to poor ESPN 3 feed, so my observations on the line are from one game. But it is a pretty good unit. Some improvement could be made, but I don't think it is a real weakness right now. Just need to clean up the ability to run block and we will be fine.

For those who were at the game, was beer being served and if so how much?

You know if you think about it, we are closer to the point of being a team that can reload than we ever were with Wolf at the helm. Despite weaknesses, both coordinators can sub with a certain level of confidence we have not seen since Heacock (prior to his last couple of years). It is nice to see new players step "in" and contribute, as opposed to being forced to step "up".

That is a good point. Thinking about this I will say I agree that depth is better. I think Pelini was being honest when he said he thought the depth was very improved. It showed against Pitt if you think about it. Most FCS teams do worse in the second half (due to depth and conditioning ect). We did BETTER the second half.

1AA you claim Mays (AKA "1AA's manmance") that his "Passing ability is excellent,"  You should come up from Columbus and watch the games sometimes.  He can't throw 10 yards down field and his only TD every was a great leaping catch by Rader (2nd best catch of his life!)  I don't hate Mays, but your blind claims of his passing ability is over the top.

His ability is excellent. You should mention that I also said he lacks in consistency. I cannot remember having any infatuation over any player or staff member. I simply think the 1/2 of Wells/Mays is our best option. You need to stop being so extreme. I can say positives about Strollo, Montgomery, or anyone without being enamored. I can criticize anyone (including JT and coaches named Pelini) without getting to the point of hatred. I do not see Tressel as any type of savior. I saw/see what he does good and bad. Same thing with players. I like McCaster, but again he does not look like a natural TB to me.

Most teams do!! Not sure if we have the answers for their QB, WR and TE..Montana St. did score 27 on them and held them to 31 points..I think we have been battle tested with the Pitt game and that will help. Both SDSU and NDSU have a weaker non-conference schedule then in the past with zero money games played. Getting Wells back for the conference opener is top priority

Who does not share the same feelings? So are you saying the line is not opening holes, it is a good topic. I also think they are more geared to QB protection. To me, Turner is a more natural TB, with McCaster more of a FB.

Not sure I understand the use of the term excellence and inconsistent used to describe the exact same thing.  If you are an excellent passer, then by any reasonable definition, you have to be consistent.  Mays is a decent runner, very guttsy and a barely adaquate passer.  Maybe the 9-10 best in the MVFC.
Sorry if you find my liberal use of “manmance” offensive.  I didn't mean to offend, I DID mean to tease your 2 years of posting favorable reports of QBs not named Wells.  I know you like the runners better than the gunslinger thrower.  Funny thing is people hitting on Hunter for his terrible throw in OT last week, when I think his worst throw was the 4th quarter throw to Rader against EWU.  That throw should have sent us home instead of Frisco.  If you ever get a chance to look at it again, (it's all over YouTube) look how open Jody Webb was in the left flat.  Easy TD to Webb; Wells made the wrong choice and got lucky.  Just because I think Hunter is our best option, doesn't automatically make me thing he is perfect.  (BTW, the PITT throw was really horrible, especially on 1st down)

Go Guins: There is a difference between "ability" and "performance". You are saying basically everything that I would agree with. As to Wells. I do not know where you are coming from but Wells/Mays have been my 1/2 for as long as I can remember watching them. It fits coach Shane's offense. Why would I want anything else?

You are saying that May's performance was terrible & I do not agree as to just how poor it was. I think he had issues for his first two sets. Obviously by how hard Davis was practicing, so did Montgomery. In fact I am surprised that Monty did not "pull the trigger" on Ricky. Then Mays had an excellent 3rd-series and became much more consistent. Passes were higher and did not float, accuracy improved. As to Mays' "ability" ... he will be an earned starter for YSU & it will be the best choice.

As to Wells & EWU. Webb was a decoy & the man covering was very smart not to fall for it. That last play was going for Rader & no one else. Wells did not even look, as we had less than 8 seconds to try and get 2 plays off (if needed). Turns out we needed only one & the positioning on the should was intentional. Has Wells' performance slipped under pressure before? Yep. Was that an uncalled clearly obvious "mugging" of Rader? Yep. Do you think Wells saw that? Yep. Do you think that that influenced his throw? Yep. It was a much smarter throw that you think in order to try and guarantee another play. Had we had those 3-downs and 20 seconds left on the clock ... worst throw ever.  Again it is ability vs performance.

1AA you can type until you are blue in the face trying to convince me that throwing to a receiver that was completely blanketed by the defender against EWU was a brilliant throw, and you will never be successful.  Wells has been my #1 since about 1/2 game in game 3-4 of his freshman year.  That doesn't mean he is flawless.  I am not going back to look but you have one skeptic here that thinks he remembers you touting Ricky Davis as your guy in spring ball last year.  Now it's Wells and Mays, and I think I sense a little "front running".
I was not surprised that they didn't go to Ricky Saturday.  At this point, it's Mays or Craycroft next year, and you can't pull Nat after 2 series without destroying any confidence the kid may have.  Besides you were ahead and shutting out Bobby Morris, so no reason to panic.

Why don't you go into politics? You are too far extreme & make up things that I say. It was a sh** throw ...everyone (including Wells) knows it and said so. It was the catch that was brilliant. I said that ball was going to Rader from the beginning and NO ONE else. That being said, he did position the pass well for the coverage. When did I ever say he was anything close to flawless? He has yet to be as good of a QB as his predecessor & may never be.

Should have been PI on the LB on that play. That would have drug out the refs conference 10 more minutes and made for great TV. No miracle catch though and we lose and spend the rest of our lives lamenting the missed call.

You will never convince me that the throw was anything short of an attempt to draw a penalty. No QB tries to throw the ball through a defenders back.

Webb has to break at least 1 tackle to score on the play BTW.

Hey the mighty buckeyes have quarterback issues. They have lost 2 out of the last 3 games they have played.

In the 2 losses you reference, they have given up 61 points.  As usual in sports, it isn't as simple as it first appears.  Yes, they have QB issues, but they also have DB issues.  They have had 6 high draft choices from their defensive backfield in the last 2 drafts.  Hard to "reload" after all those players lost.
Biggest fulfilled wishes for me in 2 weeks of YSU football?  Reed at DE and Gibson at CB.  Not sure Reed is Derek Rivers just yet, but he is definitely better than a 1 legged Avery Moss, which is what we had in the playoffs last year. Gibson has had 2 great games for a true freshman.  CB is not an easy transition from HS and he is off to a great start.
