Title: WKBN and local radio
Post by: YSUGO on September 03, 2017, 12:18:45 PM
What happened to the Sports wrap show on 570.  I loved listening to after game incite and Bob Hannon would call in

The show wasn't on.  What a bunch of boobs.  No coverage and a high level of local and national interest.  Instead we get a liberal politics show.  Gag me.  I don't give a sh** if the Cleveland Indians mascot offends people.  Go f*** yourself if it does because if that bothers you you are good for nothing and the guy running the show if a faggot.

I believe that WKBN cancelled that show several months ago.  It was mostly worthless anyway.  Only time they discussed YSU was when Hannon checked in.

That was the only good part.  Hannon.  I listened at noon when he checked in

actually I like the new radio show on sundays , it provides a healthy counterpoint to the official state propaganda that all good party members are expected to support. Wasnt completely sold on sports wrap because they didnt spend more time on YSU and hardly any time on phantoms hockey which is one of the best and most impactful sports attractions in our community. Who is Kyle Conner and why is he important to Youngstown and the NHL?

phantoms hockey which is one of the best and most impactful sports attractions in our community.

Maybe for the couple hundred people attending, but perhaps you and I don't agree on what "impacktful" means.  at least to me, phantoms hockey is making a big fat -0- impact in the community.  go to the mall, ask 100 people if the phantoms are playing now or in the off season, there won't be 6 people know for sure.

I actually feel sorry for the investors who are working very hard to promote this hockey team.  Few care.  It must be frustrating beyond imagination.  The only way hockey could become important in Youngstown is if YSU developed a legitimate DI team.  Won't ever happen for financial and Title IX reasons.

You're right, hockey means nothing in the valley and financial and Title IX will kill any thoughts of YSU hockey, but if they did, it still wouldn't mean "squat"  YSU is national championship caliber football, and we'll have thousands of empty seats Saturday.  Good grief, some country stiff named Zak Brown will probably outdraw the Quins.

I love hockey but it'll never have an impact in Youngstown.

I was referring to impact in a larger sense than what grabs the attention of the average  Y town fan. Kyle Conner who played for the phantoms was a first round NHL draft pick, we dont see that sort of thing coming out of Y Town very often. That is huge. Hockey fans accross North America knew who Kyle Conner is and who the Y Town Phantoms are. That is huge. The USHL is a Tier I Jr league., the players are highly talented. When the Penguins were first formed in Pittsburgh, no one came for decades. I think you under estimate local  fan interest in hockey and the Phantoms. Interest in a sport increases with promotion and discussion and that is my original gripe with Sports Wrap either they were uninterested or just to lazy to find out more about hockey, local  and national.

If you interviewed every single fan at the football game saturday (by definition, sports fans) you wouldn't get 25 that know who Kyle Conner is.  That is about one tenth of one percent of the fans.  NOBODY cares in the community.  The same fans would have the same percentage of the best players for the Scrappers.  It is minor league.  That is why it is so important for YSU to maintain it's national championship level play in football.  You think anybody in Pittsburgh knows who the best players are for Duquesne?  Nope, me neither.

Not sure what your point is , Ive never surveyed fans at a YSU football game about Kyle Conner (and I bet you havent either now have you?)   BUT if we surveyed a hockey crowd they might not know who Derek Rivers is . What does that prove? It proves we have a very parochial fan base (and I dont mean they only support Catholic Schools). They havent been challanged or encouraged to broaden their sports interests. And then we have a show calling itself sports wrap that caters to their parochialism. By the way Ive been to most of the Phantoms home games and I would estimate 30,000+ in attendance for last season. That is almost as much as YSU's football home attendance and certainly more that YSU basketball. Doesnt sound like a big "0" impact to me.

If your argument is hockey fans don't know any more about football than football fans know about hockey, they I think you are wrong.  If you think the number of hockey fans is even remotely close the number of football fans in the valley they you aren't worthy of further discussion.
Parochial fan base?  What are you some kind of academic nut case?  We like what we like.  We don't need challenged by a foreign sport that has been around for decades and proven to have a very narrow fan base.  While dedicated, hockey fans are so few that the sport has no main stream interest.  AND title IX virtually provides a government ban on hockey in schools, so there is no future.  Sorry, but I'm out.  I can't waste any more time on hockey when the Tribe is at 15 wins and football is kicking off!

People think that football is such a big hit with the community of Youngstown when it's really not. Sad but true. Especially when you have 2 home playoff games and can't even get 10k people in the stands. Some people are still stuck in the early 90's thinking.

The extra effort required to attend playoff games has always been an issue.  Even back in the 90's; you can look it up. But football is still #1 leisure activity in the valley, the state and the country. That is simply undeniable.  While I personally profess that the high point of football was the day Junior Seau killed himself, it is still far and away #1.  In 25 years we will look back on football as we do boxing, horse racing and tennis due to the head trauma issues, right now its still #1.  Some of these nut hockey fans are trying to talk up hockey when it isn’t #2 or #3 or #22 for that matter.  Good grief, walking in the mall is more popular than hockey.

So why not a hockey team for you, lots of other smaller schools manage to have hockey teams. I think we are in agreement that the interest and desire is there. Then how about a curling team?

He really is. Hockey isn't for everyone, and that's fine. Just like football isn't for everyone. But the interest in hockey is there. Maybe not in your world, but it's there.

YSU has had a "club" hockey team for years. So we are talking about YSU sports. And for my parochial friend (and Im not talking about someone who supports Catholic school athletics) Robert Morris has had an NCAA Div I hockey team since 2003. I really think your afraid hockey could become popular after all it's one of those "foreign" sports all the way from the foreign and exotic land of Canada. Which sport by the way isnt foreign either in its current form or its original form? Oh . sorry for sounding like an "academic nut case", sometimes I find it necessary to speak in more than one syllable. I'll try to tone it down for you. Football.......good, Hockey........bad. How's that?

My ignorance of the vast popularity of ice hockey?  You're kidding, right?  Next time you are down watching the phantoms, say hi to your 6 friends in attendance and find someone who cares.  This blog is devoted to YSU sports and they play all the ones anybody gives a sh** about.  FB, MBB, WBB, TRACK, GOLF, even BOWLING!  Anything that anybody gives a damn about has a YSU team.  Enjoy your delusional life as a liberal hockey puck, and my condolences to your family who must be in tears watching you waste your life away following hockey.

Oh, my family loves hockey and attends the games with me.  You really should think about professional help.

Why does everyone who disagrees with someone have to be labelled a liberal or conservative?

What the f*** does hockey have to do with politics?

That's a pathetic way to try and "win" an argument as a last word by someone who has already lost it.

Happy is absolutely right.  We have lost about a dozen highly intelligent, dedicated YSU fans from this board because of personal attacks and non-sports related nonsense.  A few of them were well-connected to the athletic department and valuable sources of unique information.  The very type of information most of us hope to learn when we access this message board.
