Title: Football Practice
Post by: go guins on August 09, 2017, 03:04:56 PM
I am so very tired of reading about off field stuff.  Has anybody been to a practice?  Anything interesting, position battles, developing depth chart, etc.  How does Ricky Davis look at receiver?  Will he get any playing time?  Who looks like a kick returner?  Who is winning the CB battles, DE's?
C'mon man, let's talk football!

Penguins have lots of options on ground

YOUNGSTOWN

With their first day of full contact and pads now a fading memory, the Youngstown State football team will continue preparation for their first scrimmage, which is slated for 10 a.m. Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium.

“I thought it was good competition today. Coming in I told our guys that we need to practice full speed from start to finish,” head coach Bo Pelini said. “I thought today was the best day as far as I was concerned. I didn’t see any lulls and thought that we competed hard.”

The Penguins have already had four days under their belts without pads, which Pelini has termed key learning days.

“The first four days were really important as it set the foundation to get to this point. You can’t come out here today if you haven’t learned and started making some progress those four days,” he said. “There’s a lot of learning going on and some mistakes are obviously being made, but we’re making progress and we’ll go now from there.”

The competition at tailback is one on which many will be keeping an eye with Tevin McCaster, Joe Alessi, London Pearson and newcomer Christian Turner battling for playing time.

“We are deep at running back and I really like our depth. We have a stable of backs,” Pelini said. “You talk about Tevin, London and Joe, I also think incoming freshman Christian Turner is also doing a nice job. Some guys are at different levels in their learning and experience, but this is a good group and I think that we are going to be alright at that spot.”

McCaster was the third-leading rusher on the team last year with 652 yards, behind Jody Webb (1,342) and Martin Ruiz (1,153). His 11 touchdowns ranked second, one behind Ruiz.

McCaster was pleased with his first performance in pads, adding that the goal remains the same each and every time the team hits the turf.

“Between now and our first scrimmage on Saturday, and the remainder of the season there’s only one goal and that is to keep getting better, take it day by day and rep by rep,” McCaster said. “The overall goal is to get back to where we were last year, to get back and compete for the championship but win it this time. My experience last from last year is going to help me tremendously this season.”

McCaster called the first day of hitting a good kick-off to summer drills.

“Today was very competitive and definitely high energy,” he said. “The offense won some, the defense won some and that’s what you want. You want both sides to win.”

Alessi was fifth last year with 223 yards and two scores, but averaged a team-best 20.3 yards per rush.

He added that players on both sides of the ball were prepared, but feels he needs to step up his performance in order to become someone who can be counted upon when pressed into action.

“There weren’t as many mental errors and people knew their assignments. We were moving around well and everyone was excited to be out here today,” said Alessi, a South Range product.

“As a team I felt like we had a lot of intensity, but we need to continue at that level and go full speed every rep. I just want to contribute to the team as much as I can while my goal is to be a playmaker, someone they can rely on. Today wasn’t my best day, so I’ll need to improve.”

Overall, Pelini felt the first day yielded quite a few positives.

“I liked what I saw today was there were some good things, but a lot of things that need to get fixed, which is always the case at this time in camp,” he said. “I just kind of told the team we’re not competing to play YSU against YSU. We’re not game-planning against each other or anything else.

“What we’re looking to do is see guys execute with what we’re coaching them to do. Playing with technique, fundamentals and then doing it exactly the way we have it detailed.”

What can I say?  Unfortunately I was also, and remain, concerned about DE.  Hopefully that comes out OK too!

NOW THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT....FOOTBALL!

RB is fine with McCaster and Alessi leading the way. Not really worried about the offense.

Agreed.  Also not worried about the kicking game either.......let's see, what's left..... oh yeah, Defense.  Middle should be OK,  DT's LB's and a safety or 2.  Edges are of concern, especially with spread offenses.  Hope somebody gets to practice and sees progress!

I think Bo will pull out all the strings this year. If it means burning a redshirt on Cook , Chapman or whoever he will do it. On offense we have at least 9 receivers we can count on to catch the ball and the same could be said for at least 3 tight ends thats a good problem to have. Look for Wells to throw more then in the past with different sets and formations. Needless to say the experience Tevon and Joe got last year was huge..I have know idea who will replace Dylan and Brock , but plenty of guys are more then capable. On defense we could see one of the better run defenses in recent memory. From what im hearing out of practice I'm not as concerned at the Defensive end position as i once was. I think we can square up the safety position without much problem..The corners remain a question mark

Fever, in this day of spread offenses, it kind of comes down to QB and CBs doesn't it?  Wish we had more CB experience.  Not sure we don't have the talent, but we certainly don't have the experience.  We have Pitt and 2 cupcakes to start.  Would love to beat Pitt again, especially since they were the 1 and only team to beat Clemson last season. (who beat OSU 35-0 if anybody forgot)  But nobody will hold a 1A lose against us, so we have 3 games to work on development on D.  While I don't see 9 quality receivers, I do see quality at virtually every position.
I don’t know the 2 new OL starters, but we got quality play from several last year including Rotheram, Fraser, Newsome, to go along with Hrynkiewicz, Wiggins, and Spencer.  There are a bunch of guys with size we don’t know much about but several will start for us over the next few years, so I see good continuity of front.   Wiggins and Hrynkiewicz are Juniors, so we could have as many as 4 back for next year!
We will score, we will be tough in the middle, and if the edge defenders step up, we could be very good!
Can't wait.  23 days I think!

I'd put our DT's and LB's up against anyone in this conference. The DB's have me the most worrisome. I'm expecting Powell to be solid at safety.

Also from what I've heard. Sharp and Fraser are starters so far on the O-Line at RG and RT respectively. They've had Avery Larkin, DJ Smalls and Darius Hall at DB with Hurst and Powell as as safety's. Durkin has looked good at TE. Very athletic.

We've had good tight ends for quite a while.  We don't throw there often, but it isn't because the kids can't play.  This group has a TON of talent.  our #4 could/would start for most teams in the MVFC.

Durkin and Rader will see the most action because of their athletic and pass catching ability.

Yo..Patterson, Bailey, and Scott are all big time recievers and showed that during the playoff run last year it has nothing to do with our secondary. The passing game this year will open up the run game just as it did last year..This offense will put up some big numbers..thanks for the countdown!!

Your welcome! I have admittedly, missed a few day on the countdown occasionally. I have alot of expectations for our receiver corps. It does appear to be the best we have had in years.

I agree. Passing game should be solid. Louigene and Chapman have been starting DE's for the most part. Reed still working on getting comfortable with the system.

I must be late to the party but, I just saw that Trent Hosick is listed as a safety.   Is it because his shoulder won't let him throw anymore?  Is he actually practicing at safety or just another body back there at practice.  Since he transferred,  he always has seemed like a good kid.  Go Guins!

THAT is the question.  Will take game action to answer.

Yeah, once he broke his collarbone pretty badly he was passed on the depth chart by Hunter and Nathan. He won't see the field as a safety. Only a practice body at this point.

Hosick said several months ago that it was September at the earliest for any throwing. Not certain if that is still the case, but it seems so. One thing that I will be looking for engaged he allows his coaches to be with the media ....especially the coordinators. He likes to keep them "under-wraps" and I am not certain if it a lack of confidence or just Bo's nature. After last year, they way we adapted on both sides of the ball, Bo has to have a good sense of confidence. I know that Bo is not that way in practice, he let's his coaches earn their paychecks.

I would feel much better if we would have kept Ricky or Trent at quarterback for depth purposes . Keep in mind this is the year we want Mays as the back-up because he is the future. Several athletic quarterbacks in college have made the transition to WR or secondary. Wouldn't put it past Ricky or Trent if they play some this year

In previous reports from the spring, both Ricky and Trent believe they wouldn't have much chance of seeing the field at QB and wanted to be on the field.  You can't fault them for wanting to play as seniors.  If Hunter goes down, it wouldn't take much to move 1 or both back behind Mays.  The only issue I see here is Hosick's injury will limit his ability to hit at safety as well as throw.  I don't see him playing.  Funny thing, but as an athlete, I suspect Hosick is the best of the whole bunch.  The big eyes he had going to Missouri was a bad decision.

Offense is always going to have the upper hand in practice. Especially when you have to replace the pieces in the secondary like we have to.

I wasn't there but from what I heard some tidbits:

The RB's are going to be just fine. McCaster and Alessi will carry the bulk. Mix in some McNutt and Christian Turner, the freshman who the coaches love.

Offensive line from what I hear is set barring injury with Spencer, Wiggins, Hy, Sharp, Fraser.

Reed, the florida transfer is still running with the 2's as of now trying to get used to the system. Our DT's and LB's are stacked. D-Line as a whole, especially in the middle is pretty deep and talented. There is competition to see who the starting corner's will be. Larkin, Smalls, Hall, Thomas. That's the biggest area of concern.

"Interesting" that the coaches both talked about safety and nickel back, but didn't seem to notice they have to get a couple CBs out there too!  They are making me more nervous, not less!

No mention of Cody Squiric who was a starter last year and a  big part of the team. He's listed on the roster, maybe out for the season with an injury ? Anybody know ? They moved Sims who's a load to DT just a couple days ago. Also, Reed the transfer from Florida is still running with the 2's. Now I don't feel as good about the D-Line as I used to.

You don't feel as good now, but I never did.  We lost the 2 best DEs ever to play for YSU, and that leaves a HUGE hole.
I believe 1AA is going to practice this week, and I am looking forward to his reports.  1AA, where are you??

I'm optimistic you are going to an excellent report from training camp practice!

There is a difference from being "optimistic" and being "blind to the reality."  I am optimistic we will have a great, enjoyable season, make the playoffs, and make a fine showing in the playoffs that we can all be proud of.  That doesn't mean I can look at Frick & Frack and think we have successfully replaced Rivers & Moss, does it?

Not sure, don't have an answer for you. Was wondering the same thing.
