Title: Night Game vs Illinois State
Post by: ValleyTalk on October 04, 2015, 08:41:17 AM
If I'm not mistaken, this series is pretty much dead even and the home team has won every game since 2006 I do believe, when YSU beat the top five Redbirds in Bloomington.

If it is dry Saturday, our community has no excuses not to get out there to support this team.

Beat Illinois State!!!

Seeing the Birds get shutout for almost 3 quarters, I do not know what to say. Does anyone know if they had an injury? Hopefully we see something there to win next week.

Tre Roberson started the game against U.N.I. as a wide receiver and played the entire game there..Interesting

Apparently, Roberson hurt his throwing hand and can't pass at the moment.  Don't know how serious.  If he does not line up at qb next week, that will be a wonderful break for us, although he is still extremely dangerous anywhere on the field.

Traditionally, Illinois State is a poor road team.  They even struggled with Eastern Illinois two weeks ago.  Let us hope this continues.  If we play defense like we did yesterday, we should be fine.

Hopefully this will bode well for us. If he isn't able to throw and line up at QB this week, that takes a major offensive weapon away from that team.

I'm not going to make any predictions because I don't like doing so but this team is playing with a confidence and swagger on defense. Derrick Rivers is arguably the best defensive player in the country and is making our defense that much better. Illinois State is a tremendously talented team and deserving of their top-5 ranking. Here's to hoping for a packed Ice Castle and a win that could propel us forward.

I am trying to make the trip up from Savannah but I-95 and several other roads are shut down.  I am hearing bridges are washed out on 95 and parallel roads.  All hearsay for me at this point but Jeeze.  May need to make the trip near thanksgiving.

Hopefully, the roads will be ok to travel on closer to the game. When are you leaving?

Wednesday.  Not looking good right now.  Don't want the expense of flying, plus I need to stock up on y-town only supplies.

That was a bad loss for UNI.  Roberson did not attempt a pass and only had two carries.  If that's all he can do against the Guins, then I fully expect YSU to win.

What constitutes  a Ytown only supply? I hope it clears up to be safe to drive by wednesday. Also, its got time to go, but as of now saturdays forecast is rain

What forecast have you seen? It is most likely going to rain a bit Friday which may carry overnight but Saturday will be dry, especially Saturday evening. Should be low 60s and sunny Saturday. Perfect October weather!!

Have to get some egg noodles for soups, Gia Russa sauces, Marzetti salad dressing etc...  Sometimes I get some Schwebels bread and freeze it at the house.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Coprich get 35 plus carries in this game unless we can shut him down early.

Not do or die ??? no shame losing to the 4th ranked team in 1FCS, especially this early in the season. It will make it more urgent to win 5 of the last 6 games especially games in NOVEMBER "IF" YSU loses. Maybe do or die to win more fans back to the "Ice Castle"  :-\

I stand corrected. Big red I agree, but the thing is, getting off to the right foot now is critical. If we fall here, likely losses are SDSU and NDSU, and then have WIU, SIU, MSU and ISU (b) without losing. Its not do or die this week, but if there is a loss, it will affect our playoff chances. We need at least one of the three (ill state, NDSU and SDSU)

On another note, why are the sycamores ISU (b)?

Indy ST is Blue (b) and white ILL ST is Red (r) and white.

Nice to win all the big games especially at home.

I like our odds with Illinois state and with SDSU. Would be nice to win all THREE of the big home games. Time will tell, but man it would get really exciting.

Thanks for the explanation. I could never figure that out. Always thought it was ISU(r) for redbirds and couldnt understand why it wasnt ISU (s) over ISU(b).  :o

Not a must win to make the playoffs, but if Roberson is limited then it becomes a game the Guins should win.  Can't have a repeat of the 2013 UNI game, when they were decimated by injuries, and Wolf still found a way to lose.

The hype surrounding this game is good, and let us hope it results in a big crowd.  The reality is that this is not the Illinois State team that nearly won the title last season.  They experienced massive losses to graduation and now, supposedly, to injuries.  We will have, by far, the most experienced team on the field on Saturday.

I am not suggesting that they are not good.  They have the best running back we will face in the conference and Roberson, who I predict will play qb, presents unique challenges.  But I am confident that our d-line can control the line of scrimmage.  How many years has it been since we could make that kind of statement?

We have NDSU, SDSU, UNI and we already lost to Pitt. This is a must-win. We match up well, as we always do with ILS. We are reasonably healthy and this one is on our turf. So to quote Frankie Pentangeli "...look, let's get them all. Let's hit them all. Now while we got the muscle..."

YSU1

According to the university website, the records for both season and individual game attendance were set in 2000, Tressel's final year as head coach.  Season average was 18,109.  Single game high was 21,119 against Northern Iowa.  No, for reasons that I suggested on another thread, neither record will ever be broken.

I believe the record would fall "IF" YSU can get into the playoff's, Akron, Kent or even Dayton back again. Dayton seems to think they are top 25 material this year  :-\

It will be really interesting to see how the offensive line and wide receiver's execute this week. I think that has been some of the reason's for Wells up and down season to this point. I would love nothing more then a big first half like they had last year and then let the defense take over the second half. This game could very well be a chess match and the in game adjustments by the coaching staffs could very well be the deciding factor

Any word on who will start at center?

As far as last year - the offense was non-existent in the 2nd half and our defense wore out in the middle of the 3rd quarter.   I would like nothing more than YSU playing on all cylinders for all 4 quarters.
It will be a chess match for sure - we will find out if we have Bobby Fischer or
Bobby Boucher playing on our side.

They did get wore out Scarlet. With the added depth this season that should help considerably. I'm still thinking the reason we lost that game is because  we got out coached on each side of the ball and didn't adjust. This game will be a great measuring tool for our offense , defense and coaching staff.. it will let us know where we officially stand for the rest of conference play.

After watching our pathetic attempts to play defense for five seasons under Wolford, the rest of the league might still not be fully aware of our transformation on that side of the ball.  The keys to this game for me come down to the performances of the Illinois State offensive line and receivers.  Can their relatively inexperienced o-line neutralize Rivers, Moss, and Williams and dislodge our tackles from the middle?  If not, they might be in for a long evening, despite the obvious excellence of Coprich and Roberson.  Likewise, can their receivers, a group which apparently includes some backups, get open against our secondary?

We had better come out of that locker room with fiery intensity, and the memory of the Robert Morris horror show is still fresh in our minds.  But I like the matchups in this game.  Funny how having a real defense can change a person's outlook.

Post by: IAA Fan on October 09, 2015, 11:11:39 AM
One thing that I would like to add about the defense being worn out. I agree that our offense is not completely designed to chew up clock, but we had scored more than enough points to win the majority of our games. If the defense does their job in the first half, we will not have any issues tomorrow or any night/day. It was more than clear last week that USD was not going to be able to score on us & I know that both coordinators were probably in "auto-pilot" in the second half.

As to Montgomery changing the offense, I do not think this is wise. It can become a real nightmare. The system is his system & needs to stay as designed. I would like to add that we had two nice long drives last week. So I think the capability is there. Believe me,there is going to be the time (ala Pitt) that we need to be able to pile up points quickly.

I hope the weather is great for our game tonight vs. Illinois State; this a big game and the team has to get hyped up!! They have to come out strong and control the offensive and defensive lines.

I hope it is a large crowd and they are vocal to keep the YSU team hyped up.

Last week I watched the YSU vs. SD game on ESPN3 and the video quality was extremely poor. I am guessing it was due to the poor lighting conditions in the Dakotadome. I expect far better video quality at Stambaugh Stadium because of the newly installed higher lumen lighting system. Also looking forward to see the new scoreboard.

GO PENGUINS
