tease!
-
Why the secret? Just say his name....
-
5050, I think YSUGO just want's some of his 15 minutes of fame!
(BTW, what's the significance of the 5050? Lottery reference?)
-
It's 0505
-
sorry, that rules out lottery and age.
doesn't matter. wonder who the big transfer is?
I don't see anything on the internet.
-
I was hoping and expecting that we would be in a much better position to gain transfers from big time programs. Consider these two scenarios:
May 2014. A kid at a big time program finds himself buried on the depth chart and wants to transfer. He contacts his old high school coach who tells him to consider YSU and play for Eric Wolford. The kid's response: "Who?"
May 2015. Same scenario, but now the old high school coach advises the kid to go to YSU and play for Bo Pelini. The kid's response: "Wow!"

Lucky numbers for myself! Always kept it haha.

Yep. Say what you want about Pelini, but the name carries weight for sure with the younger generation.
-
Funny thing about transfers, us and other schools. Yes there is occasionally a Russell Wilson and others, but MOST don't work out nearly as much as the hype would lead you to expect. Remember Louis Irizarry? He was going to be the TE of D-1 at OSU and ended up as barely OK at YSU. Same for Najee Tyler the QB from Purdue. We have done OK with JC transfers, but bigger school guys stepping down, not so much.
-
go guins,
I generally agree with your analysis about big time transfers. Wolford struggled in that category and Heacock certainly expected more from Irizarry, although he did secure the services of the Illinois running back who led us to the semi-finals in Heacock's only playoff year. But Tressel scored with the acquisition of Ohio State transfers Soltis and Cochran. My point is that Pelini, like Tressel, is more likely to lure the right kind of transfer to our campus.
-
Good point Wick. The best way ti get good transfers in from the coach the player is leaving from. Heacock was far more embedded in the coaching community than Wolf; which I feel is why he seemed to have success at JUCO's and transfers..
-
1AA, I'm not so sure I agree. Some of Wolford's better recruits were transfers. Guys like Luis Quinones, Lamar Mady, and Joey Cejudo were all transfers. IMO Wolford's issues were more the disregard of defensive backfield and depth. Funny how you ignore strengths and focus on weaknesses. Wolford had terrible defenses, but he was the best O-line coach we've ever had! At least the guy is doing what he should have been doing all along!
Parents should not be underrated as big influences in kids’ lives and decisions about schools, and we shouldn’t overlook the national negativity that Pelini has garnished with his tirade in Nebraska. That got a LOT of national attention and frankly wasn’t very professional. Yes he has a more widely known name that Wolford, but it may not be all positive for recruits and transfers.

Wolfords O-Line was awesome against the blind center and the sister's school of the blind. Playing NDSU, UNI, etc.. they couldn't block their way out of a wet paper bag. Will say, I like what Wofford did with the team when it came to the 1BCS teams/$$ games. Bo has not coached a game yet and some still harp on the negativity stemmed from the ass reaming he was receiving at the hands of the dick Nebraska had for an AD and President :o
-
Maybe I am missing something here and not talking to the right people. But with the notable exception of a few outraged faculty members (big surprise there) and a few "make-believe" journalists for the student paper, everybody that I have encountered in the Mahoning Valley is delighted that Pelini is our coach. Nobody seems to give a rat's butt about Pelini's behavior in Nebraska. As far as parents being turned off by Pelini, I think it far more likely that they have observed the respect that Pelini showed to all the players that he had inherited from Wolford. That stood in sharp contrast to Wolford's reckless purge of players five years ago.
-
The parents of the current football recruits are still of the generation where you respect elders and discipline was taught in school and local sports. However, we are quickly approaching the parent that wants each kid get a trophy and everyone is equal. I personally respect Pelinis passion for his profession. To be honest I am more embarrassed about the response of a few administrators at YSU regarding the "straight day at YSU recently. Its proof that you cant always have your cake and eat it too...
-
I do not agree about the O-Line Go ...you said it yourself ...lack of depth. Also our lines, until the last year & 1/2 were too light and too tall. Lack of strength led to early and obvious holes that were easily exploited by our opposition.
He inherited the Heacock/Tressel tradition of depth with guys like Rodemoyer, Page, Elkins, Radakovich, Coates, DJ Main, Sinko and Mays. He lost Colgrove, Figerora, Dugan, Brown, O'Hara and Sazdanoff from the O-line; then Wolf recruited 6 D linemen (far more than we needed) & had to bring in a JUCO in Herdman for the O...Wolf's O-Line frosh (Conlan and Green) did not work out, forcing him to go JUCO again in 12. His 12 & 13 classes were better and we saw the difference that it made. W took over a team with 2 starting center's and 2-reserve & ended up moving a guy over in 14. I am a firm believer in the fact that you need 10 starting down-linemen on each side of the ball.
Also our d-linemen were good at getting their hands up, but could not penetrate. This put more pressure on our dbacks & exposed them.
-
Can we have any clues? The number of local kids playing in the B1G is not as substantial as in the past.
-
I have heard nothing about any transfer....
-
Soon.

I think I know what you mean, but you can't have 10 starting linemen each side, there are only 5 (or 4 positions) It’s like giving 110% That simply can’t happen. The starters get the reps. the coaching. That's the facts of things.
If you look at offensive stats over the Wolford years, I believe you will find the issue was not offense or specifically OL play. Look at yards gained rushing, yards gained passing and scoring vs. the MVC. The issue was pass defense. Your comments about no penetration were, IMO valid until last season. Rivers made huge difference and I believe sacks were way up. Still couldn't cover anybody. I hope Pelini's claim to play much more aggressively will help. I pretty sure Wolford's transfer Kenneth Durden will help the secondary.
I'm not a Wolford guy, but I've read a lot of criticism of him over his stay for "lost" players. Many of them couldn't play and thought they were entitled to a starting spot. They weren't. No good coach has entitled players.

I don't want to say anything till its official and honestly to protect the kids privacy.

Fake Fake Fake

This isn't fake. This is true.

This isn't fake. This is true.
I think it is more important to how things play out if YSU does get the transfer than if this information is fake or not. Even the best sources are only as reliable as the time which they had the information.

go guins: I think Bryant's defensive line scheme helped with the sacks - and yes Rivers was a major factor. They still didn't play aggressive against the receivers; allowing them to run their routes at will.
-
If we get this person everyone will be pleasantly surprised
-
Is Canton considered local? Bri'onte Dunn?
-
I want a bad azz defense player that can shut an O down.
-
LJ Scott leaving Sparty already :P I don't know. I don't get caught up in rumors. I'll look at the roster a few days before the game and that's what I'll go with :)
-
It's not the Canton guy.
-
Deveon Smith???
-
If we got Billy Price back from tOSU i would be exstatic
-
The following are local kids currently on Big Ten rosters:
Michigan
Dymonte Thomas, Junior DB from Alliance (Marlington High School)
Deveon Smith, Junior RB from Howland
Michigan State
Jalyn Powell, Sophomore DB from Harding
Indiana
Devine Redding, Sophomore RB from Youngstown (Glenville High School)
Iowa
LeShun Daniels, JR., Junior RB from Harding
James Daniels, Freshman OL from Harding (Joined team for Spring practice)
Ohio State
Trevon Forte, Sophomore DB from Cardinal Mooney (Walk-on)
Billy Price, Sophomore OL from Austintown Fitch
-
I thought Deveon Smith was in line to be the starting RB? Also highly doubt Billy Price is coming after starting and winning a national championship lol... Unless it's family related for those 2, I don't see it.

I think smith is 2 or 3 on the depth chart behind the returning green and the transfer from USC. I like him as a FB but i never understood why he went to michigan as he doesnt have the speed to play RB in the B1G. he is a short yardage power back and would be a good addition for us
-
So who's this mystery man???
-
I think I am going to start a new thread spreading the rumor that Bo Pelini is taking a surprise head job with an unannounced NFL team and I have inside info as to the pending SPECTULAR announcement of the new YSU coach and see how many posts I can get based on absolutely nothing!!
(Please DO NOT speculate which NFL team etc. There is absolutely nothing to this. Kind of reminds me of the tread we are on!)
-
i don't make stuff up. His father told me they have met Pelini and have been released from the other school if he decides to leave. We are trying to figure out how to give the kid a a a scholarship. That is the hold up. So I am not throwing out his name to the wolves till it's a done deal.
-
YSUGO is telling the truth.

I didn't accuse you of "making stuff up," I only said it "kind of reminded me."

I will vouge for him. He is telling the truth
-
I'll get excited when it happens. There are always so many rumors and often we get our hopes up then it falls through.
-
I've been reading this board for quite a few years, and have not known YSUGO to spread false rumors. I know we are maxed out on schollies, so they probably are trying to move some aid around to make room for him.
-
Each summer every program in the country loses a few players for one reason or another. So if this kid wants to come, money will eventually be available. Meanwhile YSUGO is doing the right thing by not revealing the identity of this player.
-
2 weeks now and still no name....
-

It may be a little while.........may not know until summer camp.
-
Did YSUGO tell PenguinPower? I know PenguinPower lives down south so I am a bit intrigued.
-
Jayln Powell from Harding/Michigan St. Will be playing for us this fall!
-
Great news!
http://spartanavenue.com/2015/06/06/michigan-state-rumors-lb-jalyn-powell-to-transfer/
-
Excellent. And it seems that he is versatile enough to play several positions, wherever our need is the greatest.
-
Looks like he might help. Two years under Dantonio HAS to be a help to any defensive player. Several of the HUDL highlights from his senior year at Harding were as safety as well as linebacker, so the flexibility isn't new. Probably means too slow for MSU at safety and not big enough for a MSU LB, but could be good fit at 1AA level. We could use a LB that has some coverage skills. Good pick-up, if not the huge thing the weeks of lead up from YSUGO would have us all expecting.
-
Linebacker???? He's listed at 6-0, 195 lol. Would be a good addition to safety I think. Although we have Jameel Smith and Tre Moore back, Along with Shane Dixon who seemed to be primed for some playing time this year. But I will welcome anybody who has Big10 caliber.
-
He played in some big games last year.
-
What we had at safety last year (and cornerback too) got Wolford fired. Let's not get too enamored with returnees that didn't get the job done. It also makes little difference what they are listed at, but what they “are” and how they play. Long way to go and maybe this kid can help.
-
Along with the lineman from Nebraska, Powell would be the second Pelini transfer who actually played in a Big Ten game. Much better than taking big time program "mistakes" who never saw the field.

To add to your point . This kid is the real deal. Came home for good reasons not bad ones. He will also be versitile. Excellent addition to the defense. He may also be able to help on offense. Heard he had a high ceiling and was projected to start.
-
Greats point Power. This is also a win for Jalyn, as he will certainly get the recognition here that he wants.

Saw action in 9 games, made 5 tackles as a backup. Let's not this make this kid out to be the second coming of Charles Woodson. Trust me, I'm excited to have him but let's keep our expectations in check here.

But he was a freshman this year and still played on a defense that was top 5
-
You guys amaze me. This will be an upgrade to what we have look at the tape do some research. The kid played wherever they needed him at Harding. He was on a loaded team and actually was moved to star linebacker for the bowl game and did a great job against Baylor. Pelini knows Defense and I trust him on getting the most out of this kid. Do a little research his 40 time was not as bad at what was stated. He is a hitter and seems to be around the ball. Can't wait to see him light somebody up.
-
Narduzzi recruited that kid and he knows Defense as well.
-
Where in the article does it say he was transferring to Youngstown State, apparently I missed it.
-
The article didn't actually say he was transferring to YSU. Its not official yet. But it is leaking he was interested in leaving. Not sure why either if its about playing time. He will see quite abit on a top 5 defense no less. But glad to get him! Per Joe Scalzo on twitter: "I can confirm there's mutual interest between Jalyn Powell (Michigan State / Warren Harding) and YSU. Expect decision either way next week". He tweeted that on June 12. Hope it does become official this week!
-
Looking forward to seeing him on the field this fall.

Sparty right now has the #2 recruiting class in the nation for next year (tOSU #1) with alot of good linebackers coming in. This might have something to do with the transfer
-
This article from the BTN from earlier today speaks of Jalyn Powell as if it is assumed he will be with MSU this season.
http://btn.com/2015/06/18/unit-rankings-darron-lee-ohio-state-pace-big-ten-east-linebackers/
"2. Michigan State.
The Spartans ranked No. 1 in the nation vs. the run last year (88.5 ypg). And the linebackers coached by Mike Tressel played a big role in that. Darien Harris is a returning starter at the “Star” spot. Riley Bullough is an anchor in the middle, the latest Bullough in a long and illustrious line in East Lansing. Ed Davis is a bellwether and the star of the bunch who excels vs. the run. Depth also is strong with the likes of Jalyn Powell, Jon Reschke and Chris Frey."
-
From the Vindy:
"Michigan State sophomore linebacker Jalyn Powell is considering transferring to Youngstown State, according to a source familiar with the situation.
The Warren Harding High graduate was moved from safety to linebacker during the Spartans’ bowl practice in December. He appeared in nine games and finished with five tackles last season after redshirting in 2013.
Powell will likely make a decision in the next week, the source said"

He will be a Penguin.

Im excited for this, but will feel really great with an official announcement.
-
WELCOME JAYLIN!!
This will bolster our linebackers and possibility he may be used as a defensive back. Yes, I would like to see an official announcement. To compete in our league, we need solid players.
-
For anybody that does not yet understand the enormous promotional value to our university that Tressel and Pelini provide, I urge you to read the comments from Michigan State fans on the bottom of the page that 0505 linked. Not one negative word about YSU, Pelini, or Powell. I really love one fan's assessment of Powell: "he hits like a train." How long has it been since we have seen that from our defense? This just accelerates the transition from Wolford's "athletes" to Pelini's "football players."
-
Welcome home, Jaylin !!
This move really seems to make sense for Jaylin in terms of playing time, playing for BP, and being back home with friends and family. Although not a BIG schedule, he'll face both FCS finalists at the Castle, and start the season with a Pitt rematch.....and IMO...see a post-season run.

Interesting comments by the MSU fans, they obviously think a great deal of Jaylin and Bo, class.
-
MSU fans had a lot of class. Not one bad word about this kid. Good to see....
I'm interested to see where they play him. Is he big enough for LB? I say play at him safety where he's more comfortable obviously.
-
Our biggest problem during all the Wolford years was we couldn't cover anybody. If we had a LB that could hit hard and cover a TE or RB out of the backfield, it would free up a safety to double a WR. I liked some of the Derek Rivers at LB in the spring game. "Hides" him and confuses blocking schemes. More pressure, better coverage, good combination!

I liked that they moved Rivers around too. At the beginning of the scrimmage a lot of defenders were walking around changing positions before the snap. Seemed like they went away from it later but it was a nice surprise.
If they can get that in place in that little bit of coaching time I'm looking forward to what will be in place after a full camp.

Agree 100% I'm really looking forward to this year!
