YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: The State of YSU athletics
« on: April 07, 2014, 04:57:54 PM »
So am I also to assume, by the feelings here, that an athlete making the podium at an NCAA championships and being an All-American less than a month ago, did so IN SPITE, of YSU???  If so that makes this even more impressive no?

With an inexperienced offensive line, it seems the best policy would be to run the ball.  With talented backs and young O-lineman getting them off the ball and on the other team is the best option.  But with the new run and gun style in football, i dont think YSU is built for that.  Alot of the burden is going to fall on the QB, can they handle it?

I didnt see any speed there.  4.6 at 175?  probably handtimed at that.  If he had any real speed or ability i would hope he would've had more offers than walking on D-2.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Track and Field teams?

Just stumbled on a facebook page in which i'm assuming an athlete or coach does on facebook (doesnt look official) and found this.

Currently 5 Penguin athletes gracing the National List. Sam Hamilton is currently 10th in the 3000m. Chenera Lacey is currently 29th in the High Jump. Jay Jakovina is tied for 38th in the Mens High Jump. New comer Conner Neu is 23rd in the Weight Throw. Bobby Grace is tied for 5th. These places are out of all competitors in Division I at this point in the year. Its still early but with 85% of institutions having competed thus far, these athletes deserve a round of applause! Congrats guins, Lets move on up!

is this true?? and if so isn't this a pretty big deal?

For the sake of YSU's athletic future, the idolization of Jim Tressel has got to stop at some point i would think.  There is no comparison of heacock to tressel...because heacock was never the AD.  period.   Notice that the AD football HC combination doesn't happen anymore once money became the soul motivator of an Athletic Department.  The conflict of interest is way too great.  Sure Heacock took over a championship program, with 1/20th of the control Tressel had.  Tressel himself was a unique man, his position was even more unique.

In the words of Shark from any given sunday, "for a million dollars ill shake like a leaf of a tree if i got too coach!"  Its about the money,  nobody wants to coach forever hes got a few years till retirement to see if he can make a dent in DI  if he doesnt,  he retires a moderately rich man, instead of a filthy rich one.   Im sad for him  ::)

Isn't throwing more money at the problem what was done with the football team??  that worked out  ???  There is but one choice when hiring coaches at the low-mid-major level, young coaches with a chip on their shoulder.  those are the coaches willing to be paid minimally for the chance to prove themselves a greater commodity.  That takes talent identification.  That is a skill that is not very common.

I don't think this story needs any spin,  the facts are the facts.  The best recruiting tool is wins, and an academically prestigious university.  The egregious shots of run-down houses, and closed down steel-mills,  with the occasional shots of homeless people will do wonders for recruiting  :o.  If you think any footage of Youngstown will be about the positive, your optimism is outstanding.

^^^^^^^plus one times a million.    I-AA was intended as welfare for division one.   You get the same division in name but a designation that allows you to work hard to overcome financial inequities.   In the grand scheme of things,  who cares, unless this long twisted road of playoffs and committees gains something,   That something being the CASH that FBS conferences and football bowl games garner.  In such a conservative town i thought this would be understood.

yeah that oughta do it.  Mass email the committee and ask them why a team that folded up the card table 3 weeks from the money round, didn't get in to the playoffs.  That shouldn't hurt the stigma of YSU or the surrounding fans at all.    :o

Too many cooks stirring the pot in a situation like that.  Nothing worse than splitting the lockeroom taking coaches sides.  That's a really good way to lose alot of games.  Now that's only if Wolford and Mangino don't think alike.  If they're of the same mind than possibly it could work, but very unlikely
