Twitter reports that YSU has secured a verbal commitment from 5-10 WF Kelley Wrights of St. Ignace La Salle High School.

St. Ignace is the community at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  The school is two time defending Michigan State Champs (Class D or C, seen it both ways).  Team was undefeated last year.  Saw an article describing Kelley as the point guard - the recruiting site has her as a wing forward.

USJN Nationals-July 2011: Long, lanky wing guard with a nice outside shot. Defends the perimeter.

Averaged 17.5 as a sophomore, 16.8 as a junior.  Near 1,000 career points, should become school's all-time leading scorer this season.

This evening, Youngstown State sealed another Metro Detroit commitment who adds athleticism with a tenacious scoring ability.  Oak Park's 6'2" 2014 shooting guard JaChristian Biles is an under the radar athlete/scorer who stood out this past July at the Adidas Summer Invitational with Dorian's Pride 17u.

He's an agressive one on one scorer from the perimeter, mid-range, and a dynamic above the rim player.  Biles has an explosive first step who can get to the rim efficiently which is set up by his mid range and perimeter pull up jumper.

The Oak Park star isn't as much of a late bloomer, rather a player who has had to play behind a high scorer at Southfield-Lathrup and current Toledo freshman, Jon-Jon Williams.  Biles transferred to nearby Oak Park his junior year and is a reason why they are a top ten preseason Class A team.  The Knights' new high school coach, Bryant Tipton, says, "His hard work and instant offense gives us what we need to win."

Biles took an official visit to Youngstown State on the weekend of September 21-22 and has been a standout in the August and September Michigan Elite 25 events hosted by Tim McCormick.  He was also one of the top performers at the Inside Prep Sports' Fall Showcase this past September...notes here.

Biles is the #12 rated player in Michigan's 2014 class and the #3 shooting guard...rankings here.

Biles is third Metro Detroit player, following current freshman Kyle Steward and Jalon Plummer, recruited by YSU assistant and Detroit native Steve Hall.

YSU has offerred 6-9 forward Dan Manzi of Tampa Bay Christian who visited last weekend.  Interesting mix of schools includes YSU, Georgia Tech and Columbia.  Columbia means he's smart kid, but if he has an ACC offer?

ESPN reports offer from Florida Gulf Coast.

http://phenomhoopreport.com/dan-manzi-talks-youngstown-st-visit/

Tampa Bay Christian senior Dan Manzi tripped to Youngstown St last weekend. Phenom Hoop Report caught up with the Showtime Ballerz AAU alum to see how the trip went.

The 6’9” forward tells me he has a top five, at this point, that includes Georgia Tech, Mercer, Youngstown St, Tulane, and Columbia (all have offered). Manzi says about his trip to Youngstown St, “It was great!”
Coming off his trip to Youngstown, Ohio Manzi went a little further by saying, “the campus is good and so is the coaching staff.” Manzi is a versatile forward with an advanced offensive game and a high motor. He has touch to 18’ can put the ball on the floor to attack the basket, and he rebounds and defends his position well.

The people of Youngstown really stuck out to Manzi as well as what he saw on campus “they are good people and have an awesome program, both school and basketball wise.”

Youngstown St was Manzi’s second official visit, his first was to Columbia. When asked to compare the two, Manzi said, “both of them were great.”

Baseball team will play in Notre Dame's Irish Classic to be played in Cary NC early next season.

Penguins will play Appalachain State, Notre Dame and North Carolina State.  Others in the field are defending National Champion UCLA and Michigan.

The tournament will be  held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

Seems like a nice opportunity for the team to get to play some games in a great facility against some top level teams.

As BigDWSU metnioned in the master thread, YSU has offerred 6-6 power forward Darryl Bigham (2014) of Detroit Southeastern HS.

http://verbalcommits.com/players/darryl-bingham

Bigham holds offers from Central Michigan, Kent State, St. Bonaventure, Oakland, DePaul, Florida Atlantic, Buffalo, Stonybrook and Eastern Michigan in addition to YSU.

"6'5" 2014 power foward Darryl Bigham (Michigan Hurricanes 17u/Detroit Southeastern, MI.) One of the state's best rebounders but a tweener forward on the level turned heads at NY2LA's Summer Jam as he played very tough against high major post players Myles Turner (Texas Select/Trinity HS) and Tory Miller (KC Run GMC/New Hampton Prep).  The part of his game that opened eyes the most was his ability to consistently make 17' jumpers."

The story above seems to indicate that YSU is in his second tier right now.

FAIRBORN — A Wright State University basketball player appeared in Fairborn Municipal Court Monday after being arrested over the weekend on four misdemeanor charges.

Tavares Sledge, 22, was arrested by Wright State University police on Sept. 28 on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. According to sources, the incident involved his live-in girlfriend and their infant child.

According to court records, Sledge was also charged by Fairborn police with misdemeanor child endangering, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. We are working to learn from both police agencies the details of the incident that led to the charges.

At his court appearance, Fairborn Municipal Court Judge Beth Root ordered Sledge to have no contact with his child's mother. Wright State University basketball head coach Billy Donlon was in court today with Sledge. When approached following the court proceeding, Donlon said, "No comment. We'll release a statement by the end of the day."

Sledge could face jail time and fines if convicted.

Sledge is a 6-foot-9 junior forward from Mobile, Ala. He played in 34 games last season, including 23 starts, and averaged 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. Sledge was the Raiders' second-leading rebounder last season.

Expectations are high for Wright State, which returns its top nine scorers, including Sledge, from a team that won 23 games last season.

Wright State had its first practice for the 2013-14 season on Sunday.

YOUNGSTOWN

When Youngstown State played Michigan State two years ago, defensive tackle D.J. Moss got to be on the field and in the locker room. He even went through warm-ups.

But, thanks to a training camp concussion, he never got in the game.

“It kind of left a sour taste in my mouth because I haven’t got to play out there” at Spartan Stadium, Moss said. “So I’m excited for the opportunity.”

If Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has his way, it’ll be the Penguins’ last.

This weekend, YSU will travel to East Lansing to play in what could be the second-to-last Big Ten game in school history. Delany is pushing for conference schools to drop FCS teams from their schedules, saying those contests are “like a junior college team playing against a high school team or a high school team playing against a JV team.’’

YSU coach Eric Wolford, who coached at Big Ten-member Illinois from 2007-08, has repeatedly expressed his disappointment over the Big Ten’s decision, but said on Tuesday that Delany’s comments didn’t frustrate him.

“I always say everyone is entitled to their opinion,” Wolford said, choosing his words carefully. “I really don’t even think about it.

“It’s just what he felt like he needed to say.”

YSU is 0-5 against Big Ten schools, including a 28-6 loss to the Spartans in 2011. But the Penguins are 20-25-1 against FBS schools all-time, including a 31-17 win over Pitt last year.

“Getting the win against Pitt last year definitely gave us confidence,” Moss said. “It lets us know we can play with teams of that caliber.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to play in these big games. It’s unfortunate [they’re going to stop] because I would like to see these young guys get more opportunities to play schools that I had an opportunity to play. But you can’t really do much about it.”

Overall, Missouri Valley teams are 2-42 against Big Ten schools, including an 0-4 mark this season. But three of this year’s games were close: Purdue 20, Indiana State 14; Iowa 28, Missouri State 14; and Illinois 42, Southern Illinois 34.

FCS schools already have 10 wins over FBS schools this season, matching last year’s total in just two weeks.

While those wins are valuable — both for playoff purposes and the overall reputation of a program — Wolford said just having those games on the schedule is invaluable.

“It’s opportunities for young people to have experiences they wouldn’t normally get,” Wolford said. “These kids don’t get a chance to play in front of 90,000 or 100,000 people and go against coaches you see on ESPN all the time.

“It’s a great experience for the kids and we recruit to that.”

YSU will play at Illinois next season and had a contract to play at Ohio State in 2015 before the Buckeyes were forced to cancel when the conference added Rutgers and Maryland, expanding the conference schedule to nine games. Instead, the Penguins are close to a deal with Pitt in 2015.

“That’s a great experience for a kid who grew up a Steelers fan his whole life to get a chance to play at Heinz Field,” Wolford said. “If you’re not good enough to go to Pitt, it’s nice to at least be able to say you got a chance to go over there and play.”
