YSU Penguin Athletics / Craig Bohl to Wyoming
« on: December 07, 2013, 10:54:01 PM »
seeing various reports tonight that Wyoming will name NDSU coach Craig Bohl as head coach on Sunday.

I assume Bohl will finish out the playoffs with NDSU.

Thought he might have been able to do better than Wyoming.

6-1 YSU will travel to Kent Wednesday evening to take on the 6-1 Kent State Golden Flashes.

Kent will be playing their fifth straight game at home where they have not loss.  The Golden Flashes have home wins over Ohio Northern (84-48), St. Peter’s (75-58), Western Carolina (72-59), USC Upstate (79-78) and Niagara (102-97).  On the road Kent State beat Temple (81-77) and lost to Seton Hall (78-76).

All of the computer ranking services favor Kent.

Pomeroy has Kent at 144 overall, YSU at 147.  His projection is a 75-70 KSU win, with YSU having only a 34% chance of winning.

Sagarin has KSU at 91, YSU at 116 with the Golden Flashes favored by 5 ½.

Massey has Kent at 96, YSU at 139.  Projection is a 78-72 KSU win, with YSU with a 30% chance of winning.

Sagarin’s home court advantage is 4.39 at this point.  Effectively this is a game where the home team would be favored and on a neutral court, Kent State would be a 1 to 2 point favorite.

YSU Penguin Athletics / High Praise for Kendrick Perry in the Plain Dealer
« on: November 25, 2013, 11:57:48 AM »

When noted YSU hater and MAC lover Elton Alexander has something good to say about YSU, I wonder if the world is ending.

From today's story (full story linked below)

Down the road at Kent State (6-1), the Golden Flashes are coming off winning three games in three days over the weekend, but Wednesday's home game against Youngstown State (6-1) could be the toughest yet.

Certainly, in YSU's senior guard Kendrick Perry, the Flashes will have their hands full with the best guard in the state not named Aaron Craft. Perry is averaging 17.3 points and 4.3 assists, shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 82.9 percent from the free-throw line.

James Madison football coach Mickey Matthews, who led the Dukes to the 2004 FCS national championship, was fired on Monday, two days after completing his 15th season.

The Dukes lost four of their final five games to finish 6-6. They had a 109-71 overall record under Matthews.

Matthews had one year remaining on his contract.

"I want to thank Coach Matthews for his leadership of our football program and the many contributions he made to the university, our athletics program and specifically our football team over the past 15 years," JMU athletic director Jeff Bourne said. "I speak for the entire university community in wishing him and his family the best in their future endeavors."

Bourne said James Madison has begun a national search for Matthews' successor. The Dukes are among the FCS leaders in home attendance and their athletic program is seeking a possible move to the FBS level.

Matthews is the only two-time recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS coach of the year, winning in 1999 and 2008.

The highlight of his James Madison tenure was the 2004 season, when the Dukes went 13-2 and defeated Montana, 31-21, in the FCS (then NCAA Division I-AA) championship game.

Since Matthews led the Dukes to the national semifinals in 2008, they have missed the playoffs in four of the past five seasons.

"We will work aggressively but deliberately in this search," Bourne said. "I look forward to welcoming our next head coach to the university and our outstanding group of student-athletes. Until that time, I will not have any further public comment."

Bourne was chair of this year's FCS playoff selection committee, which chose the 24-team field this past weekend.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2014 Football Recruiting Master List
« on: November 20, 2013, 08:49:35 PM »
Similar to the basketball recruiting thread, I thought I would start a thread where we can recap the 2014 Verbal Commitments.

Lets keep the list here, with links to the individual threads to discuss each player.  Would rather not discuss players or overall recruiting here - lets keep this thread relatively clean so we can see a recap.  I will try best I can to keep it updated.

IAA Fan - can we pin this thread as well?  Thanks

Deleted details and moved to post at top

I'm always hesitant to link TMZ, but based on their reports Oakalnd continues to bring more unwanted publicity to the Horizon League.  In addition to the ongoing litigation with their fired women's basketball coach accused of misconduct by players, now comes word that two men's basketball players have been arrested and charged with rape, apparently at the team hotel.

http://www.tmz.com/2013/11/15/oakland-university-dante-williams-murray-mondy-arrested-rape/

Two Oakland University basketball players -- including one NBA prospect -- were arrested Thursday morning after allegedly raping a woman in L.A., TMZ Sports has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us, 23-year-old starting guard Duke Mondy and 20-year-old Dante Williams were arrested inside a Culver City hotel following an SVU investigation, and subsequently booked for rape. They are each currently being held on $100,000 bail.

We're told the alleged victim -- a female in her early 20s -- called 911 around 5AM Thursday morning to report she had just been raped inside the hotel. Details surrounding the incident are unclear.

Mondy -- who led D1 in steals last year -- and Williams were in town to play UCLA Tuesday night (Oakland U. lost 91-60).

The arrests are sure to throw a monkey wrench into Oakland U's performance in the Maui Invitational, which begins tonight. The team is scheduled to play Cal at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, CA -- and Mondy and Williams have yet to bail out.

Calls to Oakland U. for comment were not returned.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Media view from Fargo
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:16:25 AM »
Going to use this post for stories, etc from the NDSU viewpoint.

Start with this video from a radio show who is not impressed with YSU honoring Tressel.  Says YSU is sending the wrong message to the youth of America by honoring a cheater.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kendrick Perry, Youngstown State

Perry led the Penguins to a championship in the Kennesaw State Tournament this weekend, becoming the only team in the country to go 3-0 in the first three days of the season. The wins themselves weren’t overly impressive — Kennesaw State, Florida International and Eastern Kentucky — but Perry’s play was. He averaged 22.0 points, 5.7 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals in the three games, including a 31-point, nine-rebound, seven-assist performance in the championship game against EKU.

They were good, too:

YSU Penguin Athletics / MBB vs Eastern Kentucky 1 p.m. Sunday (in-game)
« on: November 10, 2013, 01:00:44 PM »
The men take on Eastern Kentucky at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  EKU is the pre-season favorite in the East Division of the OVC.

The Colonels won 25 games last year and return just about everyone.  They have a junior / senior laden lineup.

This is going to be one of the better teams YSU plays in the non-conference schedule.

I remember some good battles with EKU from our OVC days.  Their point guard John DeCamillis carried the ball every time he dribbled - or so I yelled at the horrible OVC officials.  :)

I'm really not sure that we can put much stock in the pre-season numbers on the computer projections - but just for fun and for the record.

Season Projections

Pomeroy - 17-14 overall, 8-8 in the Horizon (tied for 4th). 188th overall.

Massey -  16-15 overall, 7-9 in the Horizon. 185th overall.

Sagarin - does not make individual game predcitions (and I don't feel like calculating all of them). 165th overall

Weekend Projections

Pomeroy - YSU to go 2-1.  71% favorite to beat Kennesaw State (70-65 projection),  53% favorite to beat Florida International (73-72) and only 44% favorite to beat Eastern Kentucky (70-72)

Sagarin - YSU to go 2-1.  8.5 point favorite to beat Kennesaw State,  1.5 point favorite to beat FIU, 4.5 point underdog against EKU.

Massey - YSU to go 1-2.  73% favorite to beat Kennesaw State (73-66 projection), 49% favorite to beat FIU (71-72) and 43% favorite to beat EKU (70-72)

What the pre-season projections from these guys say is YSU is a middle of the pack team in college basketball, both in the league and overall.

Pomeroy does not project scores for the non- Division I games.  He has all but 5 other games ending in single digits - games are going to come down to a few possessions at the end.  There will be lots of games where YSU has the best player on the floor.  Lets hope enough guys can step up to assist KP.

For the record - Pomeroy's double digit games.  Lose to UMass (12), Pitt (16), St Johns (12) and beat Austin Peay (10) and Bethune Cookman (12).
