Title: TSN' beloved CAA
Post by: penguinpower on September 18, 2012, 09:50:02 AM
These A-Holes over at  TSN are now in rationalization mode to help them feel better because the CAA dynasty is over for now......

Who on here thought the TSN was objective?  I can think of two years that we were screwed out of a playoff birth because of where these biased sportswriters had us in the rankings.  The MVFC has gotten screwed too, including Illinois State last year.   Their true colors are revealed in this article.

CAA places six teams in FCS Top 25
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The concept that CAA Football teams are lurking in the shadows seems a little strange.

The CAA had become the FCS' dominant conference, only to take a step backward on the national scene last year.

But as CAA teams try to reaffirm lofty status among the best in the FCS, the conference is still home to the most ranked teams this season.

The CAA had six teams in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 on Monday, led by Old Dominion and James Madison.

Every FCS team continued to look up to North Dakota State, which strengthened its hold on No. 1 after Sam Houston State lost to FBS member Baylor and fell one spot to No. 3. Montana State also took advantage of it to move up one spot to No. 2.

The CAA had participants in the FCS national championship game in seven of the eight seasons from 2003-2010, including four title winners. Last season, only Maine reached the national quarterfinals before the Black Bears' run ended as well.

This season, the CAA again has depth across the board, including ranked teams Old Dominion (No. 5); James Madison (No. 6); Delaware (No. 12); Towson (No. 13), the defending conference champion; New Hampshire (No. 18); and Maine (No. 23).

Conference play will start to heat up across the nation this week, and the biggest game in the CAA on Saturday will be New Hampshire at Old Dominion. The host Monarchs (3-0) feature sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who leads the nation in passing yards (1,191) and touchdown passes (14).

After the CAA's six teams, the Missouri Valley Football Conference was second with five ranked teams. The Big Sky and Southern conferences had four each.

North Dakota State (2-0), the defending Missouri Valley and FCS national champion, had a bye this past weekend, which was conveniently timed considering the Bison are nursing some injured players. Coach Craig Bohl's squad collected 140 of the poll's 165 first-place votes and 4,085 points to remain at No. 1.

Montana State (3-0) received nine first-place votes, Sam Houston State (1-1) eight and No. 4 Youngstown State (3-0) seven. The surging Penguins had not been ranked as high as No. 4 since they held that spot in the final 2006 poll.

After ODU and James Madison (2-1), the rest of the Top 10 teams were No. 7 Wofford (3-0), which received one first-place vote; No. 8 Northern Iowa (1-2), whose two close losses are to Big Ten members Wisconsin and Iowa; No. 9 Eastern Washington (1-1); and No. 10 The Citadel (3-0).

The Citadel, which has defeated national powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State over the last two weekends, moved up 11 spots and into the Top 10 for the first time since being ranked No. 1 during its 1992 Southern Conference championship season.

Georgia Southern (1-1) followed at No. 11. Then it was Delaware (3-0), Towson (1-1), No. 14 Montana (2-1), No. 15 Illinois State (3-0), No. 16 Lehigh (3-0), No. 17 Appalachian State (1-2), New Hampshire (2-1), No. 19 McNeese State (3-0) and No. 20 Stony Brook (2-1).

Rounding out the rankings were No. 21 Eastern Kentucky (2-1), No. 22 Indiana State (2-1), Maine (1-1), No. 24 Jacksonville State (1-1) and No. 25 Central Arkansas (2-1), which moved back into the Top 25 as Stephen F. Austin fell out of it.

A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the Top 25. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.

During the regular season, the Top 25 is released every Monday afternoon, except for the final weekend of the regular season, when it will be released Sunday morning, Nov. 18, prior to the selection of the FCS playoff field.

The Sports Network will release a final Top 25 following the FCS championship game, which will be held Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas.

The sports writers over there do not like us at all.

In my mind, UNI is 1 more loss away from no post-season ...except as a way to fill the extra 4-slots. I do have a poll vote BTW ...I put UNI in at 24 ...just to keep them relevant, and their performance in week-1. Sorry, but that is how I see it. I am not going to rank a team that played a DII (still transitional from DIII, yet) team, and lost their DI games ..."ain't gonna happen". I dropped YSU as well. I have NDSU, YSU, ILS, SDSU, and UNI all in the top-25.  I would have 5 from the CAA as well, but I am not considering ODU, as they are in-transition to IA/FBS..

The reason the columnist is crying CAA is because Citadel embarrassed ASU ...the other favorite-son.

Good points. So is ODU playoff-eligible this year?

I believe UNI needs a first or second place finish in conference...I could see them getting in with 2 losses in-conference if they were #2, but that's as far as I think their fan club on the selection committee can strecth it.

Yes, ODU is still classified as I-AA by the NCAA (funny they have not switched to FCS yet). So, they are play-off eligible. However, ODU is not eligible to represent the CAA, as they have too many scholarships. So this will mean they can qualify at-large only ...so if they win the CAA (which is likely) the conference will have to pick someone via a vote. They will take the #2 I am sure ...but a tie for #2 becomes a serious problem. Will be interesting to see.

Good point on UNI finishing in the top-3. I think that only having conference game remaining hurts UNI. This means that no matter what they do, the Panthers are 0-2 outside of the MVFC. Aside from the money, I am completely against FBS vs. FCS games, as most pollsters count the win, but do not count the loss. Completely irresponsible.

Now look back to 1997, the selection committee took YSU over WIU, because we beat UNI in conference, and Boston & Hofstra (both ranked) outside of conference. Although we did beat Kent & a transitioning Buffalo squad. Yet, WIU had a better record than we did, finished #2 in the conference, and beat us at home ...dropping us to #3 in the Gateway. So the #2 team did not make it, but the #3 team did.

Fan,

WIU made the playoffs in 97.

Fan,

WIU made the playoffs in 97.

What year was that? We finished 3rd, and either UNI or WIU did not go, even though they beat us? Maybe it was '99, as ILS won the conference that year I think.

Fan,

97 was the correct year, but it was UNI that beat us and finished 2nd in the conference.  They did not make the playoffs however because they lost 3 out of conference games.  WIU won the conference that year with a 6-0 record, but lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs to McNeese.

Thanks ysuguins4. That is exactly how I see UNI as of right now ..0-2. The pollsters need to look at how the team is performing now...not how you think they will perform down the stretch. When UNI starts winning (hopefully not this week of course) ...I will start voting for them in a higher spot. However, nothing is going to change the fact that they have a poor non-conference record. Should the Panthers not win the conference ...that has to be taken into account for the play-off. None of this "good losses" crap. 0-2 is just that ...0-2.

I mean let's be honest. Why do we not become an independent again, and prostitute ourselves out to any FBS team that will pay us more than $400k? Is there ever going to be a penalty for playing too many money games? It does not seem that way. We keep raising the standard. I understand that we are playing two money games in either 2013 or 2014.  We are being forced to do so, to keep up with the money flowing into the other programs. The Southland has been playing two money games for a couple of years now.

Here's what TSN is saying about the game Saturday;

No. 8 Northern Iowa Panthers (1-2, 0-0 MVFC) at No. 4 Youngstown State Penguins (3-0, 0-0), 7 p.m. (ESPN3.com)

Series record: Northern Iowa leads, 20-6

Last Meeting:: Northern Iowa 21, Youngstown State 17 (Nov. 5, 2011)

What To Know:: Northern Iowa has won the last 11 contests versus Youngstown State since 2001. Coach Mark Farley seems to know the Penguins better than any other opponent, as he has never lost to Youngstown while at UNI.

Perhaps the biggest difference this year, other than the fact that each team opens Missouri Valley Conference play ranked in the Top 10 is that Northern Iowa has yet to face an FCS foe this season.

Its only losses have been at the hands of Big Ten opponents Wisconsin and Iowa - however, the Panthers were very competitive in both games - and its only win came against Division II Central State.

YSU has improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2005 and comes into the game averaging 250 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Kurt Hess doesn't have explosive numbers, but he does a great job managing the offense. Jamaine Cook, Torrian Pace and Amdre Stubbs give the Penguins dangerous depth in the backfield. The defense is no slouch, either, allowing only 13 points per game.

A night game in the Ice Castle spells trouble for the Panthers, even though they have had no problem taking care of YSU in past years. The quality of competition helps Youngstown more than Northern Iowa.

Prediction:: Youngstown State 33, Northern Iowa 31

1AA will allow 12 games in 2014.  In essense, they are allowing for the money game(s) and still finding a way to let those teams get to 7 D1 wins.

At the current rate YSU is getting better we may not get two $$ games unless the Big boys (Alabama, LSU, etc) schedule us. The Pitt's, Penn st. etc may not want us back.

If I recall correctly (and it may have been changed), FCS teams can play 14 games in ceratin years based on the calendar.  I recall it deals with the number of weeks beween Labor Day and Thanksgving.  In 2014 Labor Day is as early as it can be (September 1) and Thanksgiving is as late as it can be (November 28).  If my recollection is correct and still applicable, 2014 has to be a year where FCS teams can play 12 games.  I believe YSU passed on the opportunity to play 12 the last time it was available?  the $ are just too much to  pass up now.
