Sources tell FootballScoop that Bo Pelini plans to accept the head coaching position at Youngstown State http://footballscoop.com/the-scoop/

Bo Pelini has been offered and is set to accept the head coaching position at Youngstown State, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday evening.
Sources we have spoken with tell us they do not expect his OC (Tim Beck )or DC (John Papuchis) from Nebraska to join him at this time
On Monday, Scott did an update on the situation at Youngstown State, laying out where things stood with Pelini.
-
@WeAreYoungstown: BREAKING NEWS: Per @FootballScoop, Bo Pelini is the next head coach of Youngstown State University!
WOW!!!!
-
Gonna be honest, I'm shocked. Wow.
-
Shocking but exciting!!
Go Guins!
-
WOW. Honestly I didn't see this coming
-
These are good days
-
I hope he doesnt bring His bro Carl!!
-
Interested to see what assistants come along...

@WeAreYoungstown: BREAKING NEWS: Per @FootballScoop, Bo Pelini is the next head coach of Youngstown State University!
WOW!!!!
Wow. I honestly did not believe that could happen. Tressel might have pull this one out .... Hope that would make the players stay with the program. I like to see whom he will bring in for OC and DC.
-
Going to have fun with this poor pick over the next few years. Just hope he isn't the big embarrassment he was at Nebraska.
Projection -- Failure
-
right..... because a successful B1G head coach isnt good enough for YSU
Go Away
-
the best news is he has no interest in keeping montgomery, so we could have a good team
-
WOW.....never in a million years would I have thought Bo Pelini would come to YSU. Yeah, he can be a real JA, but holy crap.
Pally, crawl back under your rock man.
-
Going to have fun with this poor pick over the next few years. Just hope he isn't the big embarrassment he was at Nebraska.

71% winning percentage.
9 wins every year at Nebraska as head coach.
Oh great chosen one, let's hear who you would pick.
Your true colors are coming out. No matter who Strollo would have picked, you were right there ready to criticize.
-
lets be real here, this likley isn't a long term thing. i doubt he has dreams of staying at YSU for more then 2-3 years, the length and buyout parts of his contract will be the things to watch here
i dont think this is that great of hire because we will probably go through this again in 2-3 years.
-
Pally, 9 wins at YSU and it's playoffs every year buddy.
-
Successful ? ;D
Couldn't win the championship, couldn't keep a clean mouth and was not well liked by a program that had major advantages that he didn't use well.
The incoming staff will tell me which direction the program is going.
Bo Pelini. ;D ;D ;D
Valley boy ! ::)

incorrect. the guys on the team absolutley loved him, it was the alumni base that, like YSU, doesn't matter in this world that didnt like him.

Let me guess, you will never be happy unless your are picked to be the HC. Right?
-
Relax. This is going to be fun. Now you get to find out if Bo can actually coach.
Grab some popcorn.
-
Reality is if someone else came in and was successful they would be gone in a few years too.... The program needed a punch in the arm and if true Tressel delivered make NO mistake who made it happen... Seems as though the timing of Wolf and Pelinis departures were meant to be... At least time will tell...?
-
According to local news accounts, the university released a statement denying that Pelini has been offered the job. Best not to get too excited prematurely.

Straight from FootballScoop.com:
"Youngstown State (FCS – OH): Sources tell FootballScoop that Bo Pelini plans to accept the head coaching position at Youngstown State once it is formally offered. An announcement could come as early as tomorrow afternoon or Thursday we are told. Here is the story and what we are hearing regarding his assistants."

Blah blah blah. Nobody can succeed at YSU while Strollo is here, right?
-
As of now, this is still a rumor, with YSU officials saying no offer has been made.
http://wytv.com/2014/12/09/sources-pelini-to-be-named-next-ysu-head-coach/
YSU refutes Pelini coaching rumors
-
SI reporting this all bogus.
-
It's interesting the the Bo Pelini page on Wikipedia an hour ago listed him as the HC at YSU...almost immediately after it broke on FootballScoop. That has since been retracted, and he is only listed as the former Nebraska HC.

Bo Pelini says Youngstown State reports are off-base

...“It’s all a complete fabrication of the truth,” Pelini said according to a tweet by Sports Illustrated writer Thayer Evans.
Football Scoop, citing sources in a published report released Tuesday night, said Pelini’s decision could be announced as soon as Wednesday. ESPN’s Brett McMurphy later tweeted that a source told him Pelini was considering the position.
The World-Herald’s attempts to reach Pelini were unsuccessful Tuesday."...
-
Footballscoop.com is garbage, not credible at all.
-
When Bo speaks then I will believe. If he is offered and accepts the position the football program isn't guaranteed instant success. It would do wonders for the recruiting class of 2015 at this point. Y.S.U. might be thinking long term in their coaching search as they know Bo will more then likely be gone after 2 or 3 years. I do feel this just might be the sticking point at this time. He would be a great coach to jump start this program and then his top assistants that he brings in could take over the program if they chose not to follow him..should get very interesting today!!
-
This is a very nice addition for the Penguins and the University of Youngstown.. Bo is a big name, and I do believe that many thought we wouldn't get a big named guy from 1A to come down. This is good for the program! Looking forward to the future here with the Guins!
-
So football scoop is an authority on who will be the next coach?
I don't believe this at all.
-
Well, I don't know what to believe at this point. Some reporter I have never heard of says he "talked" to Bo... Football Scoop reporting that no offer has been made, but when it is made, Bo will accept it.... It's so quiet and hush hush. Idk
-
FootballScoop Staff @FootballScoop · 10h 10 hours ago
Spoke w source at YSU, they want me to reiterate, as we did in prior tweet, that they have not formally offered the job yet.
-
Youngstown Social @YtownSocial · 2h 2 hours ago
It was fun while it lasted, but Bo Pelini will NOT be the next football coach at YSU (per someone who knows).
-
Scalzo is tweeting that chances of last nights rumors to be true are slim and also tweeted that Bob Hannon said Pelini is not coming to YSU.
-
Well, looks like we got excited for nothing... Thanks, Football Scoop. Sigh......
-
Read my earlier post about footballscoop.com. They just throw stuff out there hoping it will stick
-
I just don't see how you can put your credibility out on the line like that big time and have it fold... Man. Risky business!

Yes, that's how groups like this boost their following and some people believe everything that they say.
-
Thing is, Football Scoop has been around since 99... And they specialize in only coaching rumors. Just seems pretty odd to me that they would put this big rumor out there without any substance there....

There is more truth to this than "not" truth.. Just might be too premature for the announcement.. Legal issues need to be ironed out etc.
If not oh well.. I just hope the new hire is better than the last band of stooges ::)

theres no truth to it
-
Major media outlets were carrying the story including ESPN, and NBC. It was good and free publicity for the FB program if nothing else. I actually read speculation that YSU was going to join the Sun Belt after Pelini became HC. :D
I wouldn't conclude this is over. YSU announced that a decision would be made this week, and Pelini was on campus. If they were finalizing a contract with another candidate, it would seem unusual to court another during that process.
If it is not Pelini, than this will dampen the excitement of whomever the selection is. "well, instead of a BIG HC, here's a QB coach from Tulsa."😃

Football scoop is a legit source. I'm sure they are hit and miss just like all the other big time sports news.

@21WFMJSports Another name I'm hearing a lot today in regards to YSU job is Eastern Kentucky Coach Dean Hood.
Don't know much about him but doesn't seem like a big winner. 2 OVC titles and 3 trips to the playoffs being knocked out in the first round.
-
I'm hoping JK gets a shot!!! ;)
-
Dean Hood picking up steam according to Chad Krispinsky.... Not liking this at all.
-
Hood was born in Ashtabula and has playing and coaching backgrounds in Ohio colleges. Bio isn't bad with a successful career as a DC in the ACC. Two league titles and 3 playoffs. Reputation as excellent recruiter. Not bad.
Of course, he isn't "Valley", so he won't do ! ;D ;D ;D
This place keeps me rolling on the floor.
FB experts. ::)
-
I think hiring Hood would be a step in the right direction. No connection with YSU, or Youngstown can be a good thing. As far as the one in done in the playoffs, I would have rather had that in the past eight years instead of no playoffs at all. It will be interesting to see how he would do with better talent than EKU and the best FCS conference
-
Dean Hood is a solid guy. He and Urban Meyer go way back. They jointly operate a football camp at the Spire Institute in Geneva every year. This is interesting.
-
I'm hoping JK gets a shot!!! ;)
Jason Kokrak, the PGA golfer from Warren?
-
And a guy who has made the playoffs 3 teams and been bounced in the 1st round every single time. No thanks.

Several sources claim former Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini is close to signing deal to become next Youngstown State coach. 1 source denies.

You do understand YSU hasn't made the playoffs since 2006 and that was the only time it's happened since 2000, right?
-

I'll have to agree with this. This is how I look at it. He was a DC at Wake Forest. Wake Forest is a low tier ACC team. Basketball school. Had some good years there but obviously didn't excel or impress people that he would move up to a bigger DC job. Takes a small time FCS job at Eastern Kentucky and is I'd say average. 2 OVC titles and a few playoff appearances. His record does not impress me at all. It's like looking at the YSU record over the past 10 years:
Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs TSN[4]#
Eastern Kentucky Colonels (Ohio Valley Conference) (2008–present)
2008 Eastern Kentucky 8–4 7–1 1st L NCAA Division I First Round 19
2009 Eastern Kentucky 5–6 5–3 T–2nd
2010 Eastern Kentucky 6–5 5–2 T-2nd
2011 Eastern Kentucky 7–5 6–2 T-1st L NCAA Division I First Round
2012 Eastern Kentucky 8–3 6–2 T-2nd 19
2013 Eastern Kentucky 6–6 4–4 T-5th
2014 Eastern Kentucky 9–4 6–2 2nd L NCAA Division I First Round 14
-

I do, but besides a pay increase and coaching in the best conference in FCS.... He's still coaching in the FCS! He had a good run at Wake Forest as DC, congrats. I heard he has a job offer from Vandy to be their DC. Why wouldn't he take that job? I just feel like Tressel and Strollo really need to make a big splash. Not saying Pelini, but a bigger than than Dean Hood, sorry.
-
Just curious. Why would we fire an MVFC HC w/ a record of 54.4% career wins for an OVC HC with a record of 59.8% wins? Actually, Wolford's win % is HIGHER than Hood's the last two seasons.
This is a downgrade if true....and worthy of the contempt of the 1,000 or so YSU fans that are left.
-

Obviously, if Pelini wants to be here and the financial details can be worked out, it will be his job. But aside from Bo, who qualfies as a big splash for you guys? If Pelini is out of the equation, you should be more concerned about hiring the right guy.
-
What makes you think this is that great of a job ? It is really not hard to understand why many hold this place in contempt looking at many of the comments. Who do you want that would ACTUALLY come ? Pelini, for being the "big time" coach that he is, is an a$$. Didn't win a title. Underperformed.
Hood, because of his Urban connection, might be, in addition to his recruiting, getting some "cast-offs" or transfers from OSU. While I'm not saying hire this guy, the arrogance here is stifling. Its still FCS. Its still second rate. Its still with limited success since the Tressel years. It doesn't pay much in the scheme of things, yet you fail to see the big picture of a successful FB coach working here and getting back to the playoffs. You just fired one who won more than he lost. Forget about winning a National title again. At that rate , the 1000 who attend will continue to dwindle. Surely you aren't all that dumb ?
-
I was told his agent leaked the story prematurely.
-
I was told his agent leaked the story prematurely.
Wofford's agent leaked before he was fired and Pelini's agent leaked before was hired. What is with these agents?
-
Give me a name Pally. Who do you want?

Good point!! Eric wolford would win more then 59.8% of his games if he was a head coach in the O.V.C.- There is one other mystery coach out there besides Hood that we have not heard of that will surprise everyone

Yes, but you see, the rumors are what has set the expectations so high. Let's get back to basics.
-
05 -- you still don't get it. Its not who I want or you want. Its WHO wants it. Pay is limited. Its FCS. Its not that great a job and has high expectations. The fan base is delusional. And even if you win here you still get fired. Tough league. Tough job.
-
The only way Dean Hood, a HC from an inferior conference w/ a worse record the last 2 years than the guy we just fired makes sense is......if YSU is downgrading to the OVC......a move I would support.
If not, than this is a nonsensical downgrade in HC talent.
We passed on Brian Wright...who is 4-0 as interim HC of an FBS/CUSA program.....unreal.
I still think Pelini is the next HC.
-
I also still Bo-lieve (sorry, had to) Pelini has a good chance to be our next HC.
I think a lot of the push back by YSU last night and this morning had more to do with Dean Hood on campus for his interview and trying to offer a semblance of fair search to the candidates.
I agree, a move to hire Coach Hood would not be received well by our fan base as he is having the SAME issues with the EKU program and EKU fans/community that plagued Coach Wolford.
-
I think a lot of the push back by YSU last night and this morning had more to do with Dean Hood on campus for his interview and trying to offer a semblance of fair search to the candidates.
Good observation. Also, the YSU comments appear to be carefully worded. YSU did not say Pellini was not under consideration. Nonetheless, if Hood is on campus, he's deemed a stronger candidate than many people on this board realize. Says to me that YSU will settle for someone who is not an earth shaker.
-
Heard that assistant coaching salaries is holding up the Pelini hiring. Will know by Friday. Stay tuned.
-
I do not understand why Hood would be a bad hire? Can understand the excitement around Pelini. But, if that falls through, then Hood seems like solid candidate.
Time for people to realize that YSU football is nothing special any longer. This is Dec 2014, not Dec 2000 when YSU was just a few weeks removed from another playoff season, and there were high hopes for a possible title run in 2001.
Instead, it is 2014, YSU is coming off yet another non playoff season for the 13th time in 14 years, and 7th year in a row.
If Hood were to be paid comparable to what Wolf was paid, then YSU would be a step up in pay. The MVFC is a step up in terms of FCS leagues. With Tressel as President, going this long without making playoffs is no longer going to be tolerated. Yes, Tressel is the President, but he also understands the role football plays in the Youngstown-Warren area, and the role athletics can play with drawing people to campus. Whether it be prospective student-athletes, prospective students, alumni, family/friends of athletes, or just people from the community who may otherwise not set foot at YSU.
I can see why YSU would make sense for Hood, especially if pay is better. And, at YSU, he would have an opportunity to further build his resume as an HC. Much better chance to do so at YSU than to take an HC job at a bottom tier FBS program which has not had winning seasons in a long time.
To be honest, what is it all of this for Pelini. Many will say gets him back to Ytown area. Well, he could probably be hired at several FBS schools within 60-90 minute drive of YSU as either DC, or maybe even HC. Kent, Akron, PITT are places he could possibly be hired as a DC/Assistant Head Coach. Or, he could opt to just take a year off from coaching. He is going to get paid either way.
If he does get hired at YSU, expectations are going to be very high. And, by very high, I'm not talking 3rd place in 9-2/6-2 and 2nd or 3rd in MFVC, then losing in 1st or 2nd round of playoffs. I'm talking people will be expecting YSU to win the MFVC, which is no small task. People are also going to expect YSU to supplant NDSU as the dominant team in the MVFC and FCS. This, in spite of 1 playoff appearance in 14 years for YSU. Advance to at least semi-finals of playoffs NEXT YEAR(2015), and within 2-3 years MAX win an FCS Title. Going back home has it's pluses and minuses. And, if he fails to deliver at YSU, forget another HC job at ANY level of college football.
Just remember. When Tressel was hired by YSU, he was the 2nd or 3rd choice. The first choice was Gerry Faust. I still remember Faust flying in on a helicopter for his visit. Fortunately for YSU, Faust chose Akron. And, when YSU hired Tressel, there was a collective "who is this guy"? Did not start of good either, going 2-9 in 1986, but the saving grace and sign of thing to come was the win over Akron in final game of the season. Kept Akron and Faust from an OVC Title and trip to playoffs. Gave YSU players something to build from in off season, and in 87 YSU made FCS playoffs for the first time. Tressel had no strong connections to YSU or Youngstown. Yet, now Tressel and Youngstown are seemingly forever linked in the annals of time(i pulled that last sentence out of an anal area).... HAHAHAHAHAHA 8) .
-
Another reason for Pelini to possible want to wait. Coaching carousel is far from finished spinning.
Gary Anderson is leaving Wisconsin to become HC at Oregon State. And, it would not surprise me if there are more coaching changes at FBS level, and also in the NFL. Not thinking of Bo as HC in NFL, but definitely as DC or DB coach.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12011785/wisconsin-badgers-coach-gary-andersen-leaving-take-oregon-state-job
Also, as of 11pm Eastern/8pm Pacific, nothing on ESPN.com or CBSSportsline about Pelinin and YSU.
-
YSU is waiting on Bo, whether they want to admit it or not.
-
i DIDN'T READ this whole thread of 1700 messages or whatever it is....just wanted to mention.....
I know Bo personally (played at Mooney with my oldest son) Saw him this summer and met his kids. I know for a fact that he would LOVE for his kids to attend Mooney for high school.
Wife also a Mooney grad and obviously they have lots of family in Y-town.
I did notice someone mentioned asst coaches pay would be an issue. Could Bo sign for $1 and stipulate the money he would have received be paid to asst coaches?
What a coup that would be to have him in charge. Imagine the defense!
-
Legally Bo could sign for $1 a year and/or back-load the contract. However, the job has previously paid and was offered at $250k and he must use his diligence to find a job to off-set his buy-out by Nebraska. Thus, from a legal prospective, if Bo were to sign for $1...Nebraska would sue for the difference between the actual payment that the job was offered at ($250k a year) plus potentially more as his capabilities could get him a job that pays more. There is no easy way for the university to increase the payment to assistant coaches...unless the penguin club or other donors plan to pony up.

Could Mr. Pelini end up at Wisconsin?
-
Bo Pelini is not coming to YSU!!!!!
His kids do not want to move schools
-
Could Mr. Pelini end up at Wisconsin?
Given Wisconsin's recent history with Nebraska, I doubt it. My bet is Alvarez looks outside the Big 10. Alvarez will want to restore the glory days of when he was coach. Sound familiar?
-
Could Mr. Pelini end up at Wisconsin?
It depends on how the no-compete clause was setup in Pelini's contract. I am sure he could not resign at Nebraska and take the WI job ...but he was dismissed. I also think it is important to point out that his contract was negotiated when Nebraska was a member of the Big-12 (where they belong I might add) ...so if the university was not smart enough to renegotiate any no-compete and apply it to the Big-10 ...he would not be banned from taking a head job at any Big-10 club. I have never heard of any team having a no-compete that applied to teams from other conferences ...pretty sure that would be a law-suit waiting to happen.
-
Rumors going around saying Wisconsin going after Chryst at Pitt.

Coming from a reliable local source:

Over the last hour, I'm detecting a growing sense of optimism in several connected circles that Bo Pelini could indeed be coming to YSU
-
Joe Scalzo @JoeScalzo1 · 8m 8 minutes ago
I hate to stir anything up, but I can echo what @ChadK426 said: More optimism about Pelini/YSU than yesterday. I'm hearing the same thing.
-
Saw several friends and family over the past week, and knowing that I am a die-hard YSU fan, many of them asked what I thought about Bo's hiring. I am excited, and as casual fans they were as well. This isn't a coach who was below .500 in the BIG. Nebraska has the fourth best record in conference play since they joined in 2011. Barring terrible weather, I believe the first two home games will have great crowds, and after that it will come down to whether or not they are winning.
