Title: YSU vs. Duquesne
Post by: ysuindy on September 16, 2013, 07:13:07 AM
Dukes enter 2-0 with a 35-24 win over Albany and a 23-20 loss at Dayton.

A quick look at the various statistical rankings

Massey predicts 38-17 and gives YSU a 92% chance of winning

Sagarin makes YSU a 20.5 point favorite

We need to come out with a solid performance against these guys. They are reminiscent of that Albany team we played last year, just not as good. Zach Zidian from Boardman plays for them, so I am sure he will get his team fired up to upset us.

I will be watching the defense closely in this game. Hoping that massacre in East Lansing was just a blip on the radar screen and we can hold the Dukes to 14 points or less.

Go YSU!

This is a classic "trap" game, even if we had performed well in East Lansing.  Inevitably, the team will be thinking about the league opener, and we are not good enough to take anybody lightly.

Getting destroyed in the trenches exposes and magnifies all other problems.  I don't think that our lines will be overmatched against FCS opponents, at least until UNI.  I do agree, if the defense struggles against Duquesne we will be in serious trouble.

Hey ValleyTalk, is that Ursuline qb still going to Michigan State?  Seems like a risky choice now since he must displace that stud that MSU has waiting in the wings.  He should really go to a big time school that has a senior or junior quarterback.  Or if he really wants to start for four years, I can think of one school where he can easily win the job. 8)

Point well taken, Wick. The cupboard is bare now  that Angle left. We have no significant QB here now. Best hope Hess doesn't get hurt this year because it will be all over with. As for the Dukes, it really shouldn't be much of a game . They have a couple of players ( Ohio St. transfer) who should be good, but team-wise, they are a huge step down.

Best not to be looking ahead to the MVFC, which is going to be a bear again.

Need to come out and dominate.... Btw just FYI: Demond Hymes tweeted today that "He's back" so I'm guessing that means full go and ready to play. I know he's practicing the last week or so. We need him because Pace is not a starting RB and while Ruiz can make plays, he's still a freshman.

This game is about mental toughness not physical ability.

I am very pleased with everything I see in Tanner Garry. I am not saying that he is our future; but I have seen him 4 times now & his field maturity-level is just awesome. Players seem to like him as well. I would be very interested in what coach Shane has to say about him.

This will be a closer game. They have a couple of BCS transfers on the team and they love to throw the ball.... I'm hearing LB Travis Williams will be out this weekend with an ankle injury he suffered in the MSU game.

Anything is possible but if YSU loses this game they better get a 2nd "Money" game in 2014 to make up for lost revenue in attendance for the remainder of 2013.

Yes, Durkin is still going to MSU.   He has the capability of being moved to TE.  Played as a receiver his freshman year at UHS.    He is huge and could grow another inch or two.......6'4" about 230 right now and cut.  His dad is a workout fiend so I'm sure Chris is too.   Actually a cousin from my wife's side.   Terry didn't play Saturday, so his redshirt looks to be confirmed for this year.  From everything I have heard about him there is no way Chris beats him out.

Losing Travis is a big hit but I don't see this as a trap game.

I am interested to see if they can rebound from a loss. Last year they could not.

Wolf also said Boatwright is pretty much done for the season. That hurts as he was our starting nickel DB and was playing well.

Need to come out and dominate. Get ready for conference play. I'm interested to see if Demond plays and if he plays well his 1st game back. I'm thinking  a score of like 31-13. Duquesne has many more athletes than Dayton so this game will be closer than you all think. Just like I said the Dayton game would be closer than everybody thought.

This mass of rain has cleared Cleveland and is gradually moving to the east.  Should be gone by 4:00 or 5:00 at the latest.  Of course, casual fans do not come out in the rain.  Remember how many bought tickets for Northern Iowa last year then bailed after the weather delay.  Die-hards only in the stands today.  Let's not worry about what we cannot control and focus upon getting this team back to playing up to potential.

Our secondary could get some lessons from FAMU. May they are playing well on tOSU. I wish our guys would cover and jump routed like they do.

They have no chance though because they are completely mismatched on the LOS but their skill people aren't bad

Do we have a DL?  Ugh!  350++ yards passing. I want to vomit.  Uncovered people in the secondary.

Our secondary had more holes than the Swiss cheese. Our front four could not put pressure on their QB all game. We finally called a corner blitz at the fourth quarter resulting in the fumble.

If we play D like this against SIU next week, we will be in for a long day.

Agreed, need to get more pressure on the QB without blitzing. DL needs work.... Offense was slow but picked it up nicely. Hess still missed some throws. Cant have that from him going forward. They rested a lot of guys today so hopefully were all ready to go by next week.

As I said earlier, his remarks were bound to blow up in face sooner or later. Let's start with this one. We won by 42 AFGuin.

Then we have your remarks that it will be around an 18 point game and closer than we think; yet we go out there and win by 42.

However, what do I see on here after a 42 point win???? A bunch of Debbie Downers! We beat a team some of you thought may upset us by 42 POINTS.

I hear your concerns loud and clear regarding our defense. We can have that dialogue this week when discussing YSU, but can we just once be happy with our performance on the field and the fact we won? We went out there and took care of business and I am proud of our men.

Go YSU!

My initial thoughts:

Marcel Caver needs to play more.  All that kid does is catch the ball and make big plays.

Center snap was high too many times.  Messed up the timing on at least a half dozen plays.  Got to get that straightened out.

Four new defensive starters due to injuries and the return of Peterman.  Thought that #14, Thompson,? was ok but inevitably burned by a few plays in his first start.

Hope that Travis Williams is back next week.  We need him.

Not real happy with the offensive line.  They must improve in seven days.

Really not happy with the lackluster effort starting the third quarter.  That has happened too often under Wolford's watch.

Most embarrassing trivial event of the day.  Did anybody happen to look at the scores of league games on our board during halftime?  UIC 13, Northern Colorado 0 in the 3rd quarter.  Hey, not bad for a school that started a football team this week. :P  And the people that make such mistakes actually get paid.

Not enough credit to Hess & Co. for how much the passing offense has improved. Dayton: It was terrible--Hess and receivers not on same page.  Morehead State--Statistically a good day for Hess, but in actuality he and his receivers were tentative. Hess threw several gentle, slow-moving lobs that could normally be intercepted or batted down easily because he and his receivers were still feeling each other out, and Hess got away with it because Morehead's defense was so soft.  Today: Several Hess passes had zip, no longer cream puffs. We saw some excellent throws and even a few timed patterns.

I completely agree with those who wish to trash the passing defense.  Again the highly talented QBs at NDSU and UNI, this defense will be ripped apart unmercifully if it does not improve.

Agreed Caver and Williams need to play more. Big receivers with big play potential. Good to see Bryan make some catches too. He's s great route runner..... Is it me or does it not seem like our O-Line gets any push at all?? Maybe we were spoiled the last two years but every run play seems like a struggle.

Btw, Berassa looked the best he's ever looked so far. Getting him heathy would be huge!! He and Hess have a comfort level with each other and he is our most experienced WR.

#44 Nate Adams looked good and as far as the Dayton game being closer than we thought it would never had been close if Hess and receivers played to their capabilities.Glad we were able to finish off Duquesne as I'm sure most here were quite worried when our most knowledgeable poster warned us of an impending upset. We will definitely have to find ways to pressure qb's in conference games or else we will be in deep trouble.

I am happy for the win, but any decent MVFC team will score 20+ points on us if we play that sluggish at the beginning. The Dukes had the ball almost 12-minutes more than we did. The only reason we scored in the first quarter was the roughing call that took us into FG range, which ended up being a field goal.

We had no real answer for Buechel ...most of his misses were misfires on his behalf.

I still have not seen anything that will give me any confidence going forward. Then again this is not the first time we have had this type of light early schedule, so I guess we wait. SIU is one of the two schools that worry me in the MVFC. Adams interview was spot on. We can take no one lightly and each week is a new season.
