Title: NDSU v YSU Lets get it on !!
Post by: lakesbison on September 25, 2012, 01:11:53 PM
ok,  10 days baby!!   #1 v #3.

its NDSU's Homecoming, you wont find a ticket, ive seen some for $100/piece on craigslist.

NDSU owes YSU a beatdown because of last year

I think this will be the National Championship Game, dont you guys??

Should be a #1 v. #2. Montana State's best game was against a 1-3 Stephen F. Austin team that went down to the wire, but I understand that their recent and continued success keeps them up there. I won't comment on the outcome of this one until I can watch how NDSU fairs against UNI. Should be their first real test of the season.

You need to take care of business this week before it's #1 vs. #3, don't jinx yourself.

UNI is a very good team and they'll be happy to be home. Good luck.

If you guys win, TSN voters will leapfrog YSU over Montana State in order to create the 1 vs 2 matchup.

You guys need to get by UNI first.  You may be correct with the prediction, however, YSU #1 NDSU #3 after next week.  UNI is beat up but still a very good football team.  They have an excellent QB, OL and skill players.  It is not going to be that easy especially with you guys playing in their gym.

I like the banter, but it is a long season folks, no one is ready to be crowned for anything just yet. As YSU learned last year, this is a tough league - look past anyone and you are ripe for a loss.

I honestly think that NDSU is going to win big over UNI. We are all concerned about our special-teams and defense ...and rightfully so. However, UNI's defense was a poor as ours. They say that 3 starters were out vs YSU, but I am not convinced.

The excuse, and i say "The Excuse" is because they added South Dakota to the conference.

Do not know all the details and I am sure someone does, but my understanding is that since we added South Dakota the league was unbalanced. Every team does not play every other team each year - we do not play MSU for two years - so basically  instead of playing at MSU we get NDSU.

Thank God we don't get MSU. They beat us last year.  I wonder if we would still have had to travel to NDSU if we had lost last year?  Anybody else in the conference have the same kind of reward???? ;D

I was all prepared to come to the ice castle and rock that town!

dam!   ok, next year.

Im more worried about you, than uni.   we will be rocking that town hard, probably 4000 ndsu fans to the UNI-DUMP.

is anyone coming up to fargo?   tailgating is ridiculous, and the friday night before will be rocking downtown at the bars /

I would love to...but getting there seems more ridiculous than the tailgate will be. Long drive or expensive flight...dang.

Indy and Illinois I can do but that's just crazy.

Big game next weekend, love it easily #1 vs #2 but unfortunately Montana st won and they look not good as the big sky is down so we will have to take what we can

It's homecoming and need to avenge the only loss from last year

That would be fine because we would still take the Auto bid and likely #1 seed ;)

Heck as long as we run the table, the title would be ours, seed would not matter.

Hey nice win, and good luck Sat, but both teams have a long way to go before we have anything to brag about.

Good point ysuguins4. We have a strong following, but there is some unusual fear that keeps people from posting. We have about 850 users (have to assume 25% are SPAM), we average almost 200 unique readers a day. About 280 actually, but at least 50 of those are robots. Yet we average only about 11.2 unique posters a day. The average person spends over 35-minutes here ...which is a very long time for a board. My suspicion is that we have a number of regulars that stay on most all the time.

My biggest concern is that people are locked out & cannot figure out how to retrieve their password. Like any board, I think the product is most important. When the team does well ...so does the board. For example, last year's posts during basketball season were at an all-time high ...so was our team's record.

I expect this week to be very slow on the board until Friday ..as people are scared the team is not for real & this is our first true contest. With Pitt & UNI, there was an expectation of a loss, with Valpo and Albany there was an expectation to win. This game tells how far we have really come.

The Bison, the defending FCS Champion, rank in the top eight nationally in six defensive categories and lead the country in total defense and scoring defense. NDSU has won nine straight games since the Penguins' victory last year in Fargo.

YSU leads the all-time series with the Bison by a 4-2 margin. All six all-time meetings have all been decided by one possession, and the road team has won the last three contests, including victories by the Penguins in the Fargodome in 2009 and last year. The YSU victory last year - 27-24 on Nov. 12 - was the lone blemish on North Dakota State's record. The Bison went 14-1 for the campaign and won its last five after being upset by the Penguins.

Well folks ...it is Wednesday ...what do you think about the game. Predictions and what do we have to do in order to win this game? I have two answers this week:

1. If it is a shootout ...YSU wins. 45-42
2. If many of you cannot believe that NDSU will give up that many points, you are probably correct. So NDSU wins 31-14.

Actually if you watch that commercial that they posted on here ...the man is correct in his assessment of YSU ...way off on NDSU. Line play will loom large for us. Everyone now knows how poor our special teams coverage is, and everyone is running the ball out of the end-zone. Our guys still (after 4-weeks) slow down in pursuit, thinking the receiver will "take a knee". Conversely, Stubbs was dropped at the 20 consistently last week. He should be taking a knee himself.

Student tickets are going fast

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/376228/group/Sports/ (http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/376228/group/Sports/)

FARGO – North Dakota State linebacker Grant Olson sensed the uneasiness in class Tuesday. And it had nothing to do with an instructor throwing a surprise quiz.

Students are allowed to claim their tickets for Saturday’s Youngstown State at NDSU football game beginning every Monday, and word started circulating that they were going fast this week. A computer glitch didn’t help the anxiety.

“I know everybody was freaking out in classes yesterday,” Olson said. “I don’t think anybody was paying attention to what the teacher had to say. But it’s a lot of fun. We appreciate everything they do.”

The freaking out got so extensive that by Tuesday afternoon, there was a waiting list of more than 1,900 students for the 4,000 allotted student seats at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. That may have set some sort of unofficial record. The list was between 200 and 400 for the first two home games this year, although homecoming games in general are annually a bigger student draw.

But not this big.

“Nearing 2,000 is as high as we’ve ever had,” said Justin Swanson, NDSU’s director of marketing and promotions. “It’s a hot item. Students and alumni are looking for tickets, and unfortunately a lot of people are going to have to watch it on TV.”

The game was sold out when single-game tickets went on sale Aug. 1. It’s possible some returned tickets could be made available at 8 a.m. Friday at the NDSU ticket office.

Hyping matters is the national ranking of both. NDSU is ranked first in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision coaches and media polls and Youngstown is No. 3.

“There’s that many on the list and it’s Tuesday, that’s pretty cool to see something like that,” said defensive end Cole Jirik. “They’re excited for the big game just as much as we are right now. There’s definitely a buzz on campus.”

Also adding to the buzz: It’s NDSU’s first Missouri Valley Football Conference home game and the first where the Bison are not a big favorite to win. The dome’s capacity is 18,700, but standing-room tickets can push it to more than 19,000.

“I wish we had a bigger stadium to play in,” Olson said.

Tight end Garrett Bruhn has another idea that the local fire marshal may not want to hear: Just let every student in and let them stand.

“Bring them all in and let the dome rock on Saturday,” he said.

In case any of the students were thinking of scalping their tickets, that’s not possible under the new claim system. In fact, no actual student tickets are even dispersed; rather they claim their gate entry at the Fargodome door with their picture identification.

And when NDSU defeated perennial power Northern Iowa last week, NDSU student body president Luke Brodeur said that it just heightened the frenzy this week.

“UNI was a big test,” he said. “People were waiting to see that one and to see our chances this year. Now people are looking forward to another run. I think you’ll see a really energetic crowd on Saturday.”

Quinones missed games 2 and 3 with injury, and Sirl played well in his absense.  Williams did not start last week because he missed a team meeting, and Cheiab has been coming on over the past few weeks.

Strangely, I think that some over-zealous NDSU fans are placing the pressure for this game squarely upon their own team.  They keep talking about revenge, and quite a few are expecting a blowout.  They don't seem to even accept the possibility that YSU might have a lethal offense that their very good defense will be unable to contain.  Conversely, our players and fans are approaching this game realistically.  It will be extremely difficult and failure is possible, but we are not over-matched in any way.  I just have a feeling the defense will play as they did in Pittsburgh and that the smallest man on the field will play a huge role in the outcome of this contest.

I strangely suspect that the MVFC officials didn't just randomly schedule us to go back to Fargo...... I really don't like the respect we get from the conference. Hopefully the CAA calls. But what can you do, these are the cards that we were dealt and if we go in there and play ball, then more power to us.

This is an ESPN3 game ...so far, those have been called fairly. Let's hope the trend continues. I mean last week? UNI was playing the most-clean game I had seen from them in years, and the officials called them on some infractions I might not have myself. We called out #4 as he kept jumping back and forth into the neutral zone. He was close, but when he finally misread Hess' snap-count ...the officials got him.

Last year's contest at Fargo was a very clean game, and I expect the same this Saturday...Bohl is a stand-up guy ...you have to respect him & what he has been able to do.

Fargo paper YSU pre-game story

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/376456/group/Sports/ (http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/376456/group/Sports/)

FARGO – Hardly a day goes by at the Youngstown State football offices when Eric Wolford doesn’t walk by four national championship trophies. It’s a reminder of what the expectations are for his program.

And when the Penguins went 11-3 and reached the semifinals of the Division

I-AA playoffs in 2006, it appeared the school was heading back to the 1990s when it won the four titles and finished runner-up twice.

But three successive mediocre seasons including a 4-8 mark in 2008 spelled the end of head coach Jon Heacock. The low point, said athletic director Ron Strollo, is when the Penguins had to start a freshman quarterback who was a receiver in high school.

Not only had the talent level fallen, so did the stature of the program within the community.

“The coaching change gave us an opportunity to do a self-assessment,” Strollo said. “It was easy to see that we hadn’t invested in the program like a lot of people had across the country.”

A bigger investment included bringing a veteran Division I Football Bowl Subdivision assistant like Wolford, who came from the University of South Carolina. It allowed him to hire better assistant coaches. On the facility front, the school built the Watson and Tressel indoor practice facility.

“We hired a coach to drive that train,” Strollo said.

The train makes a stop at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome on Saturday afternoon to play North Dakota State in a battle of two of the tops teams in the Football Championship Subdivision. After four unbeaten games, the Penguins are back in the national spotlight.

The blueprint Wolford drafted looks similar to the one NDSU took.

“Their coach is from Nebraska and I played at Kansas State when he was coaching there,” Wolford said, referring to NDSU head coach Craig Bohl. “We probably have a lot of the same beliefs as far as not taking any shortcuts in building a program. My thought process was some guys have only one chance to be a head coach and you better do it correct right away.”

The Bison went 3-8 in 2009, but one strong recruiting class bolstered the Bison to an FCS playoff berth in 2010 and a national title last season.

Wolford practically cut more players than he kept when he came on board in 2010 and the result was also a 3-8 season. But the Penguins were on the brink of a playoff berth last year before being upset by Missouri State in the last game of the season and finished 6-5.

“I don’t think you can deviate from discipline and doing things right, especially in that first year,” Wolford said. “You lay your blue print down and hold kids accountable. And if you do that, if you don’t worry about the wins and losses that first year and you just worry about getting better, I think it will bode well for the future.”

This year got off to a bang with a decisive win over FBS team the University of Pittsburgh in the season opener.

“I’ve been a part of a lot of rebuilding projects and have been a part of some successful ones and ones that haven’t been successful,” Wolford said.

So far, this one has been successful.

“I think rejuvenated is the right word,” Strollo said. “But we’re not there yet.”

Four trophies are a reminder of that.

I really did not like the tone of the article ...especially from a competitive paper. This crap had to have come from inside our program. To discuss a former coach shows "no class". Strollo mentioned the lack of $$ in the program. Perhaps that should have happened many years ago, and we would have had more success earlier? The facilities were planned long ago. Perhaps they should realize that our top players are coach H's players ...as they have been over the last few years. Perhaps many players quit, as opposed to being "cut"? Many of us remember watching a YSU defense average an NCAA record 8.4 points per game over an entire season ...with coach H standing on the sidelines as DC. (Your last season playing was just a year prior Mr. Strollo, so you should know). Perhaps if we had coach H, we would not have such a poor defense & special teams? Perhaps the best coach on this current team is not the head coach? So how long are we going to have to hear about what a bad team coach W took over? Move on and correct your issues coach W. Bad topic of conversation and I apologize ...but feel some things need said. That paper should have not been given such garbage to write about Mr. Strollo ...and I am sorry I had to say this on game day. So as the thread title says "Let's Get it On!!"

The game was mentioned about 10 min in on ESPN College Gameday.  Corso picked NDSU (he has no clue who they are) & Desmond Howard picked YSU, because he said he's from Ohio
