So with Detroit being banned from post-season play due to academic reasons from years past, that will give the 3 seed now a first round bye in the Horizon League tournament and move IUPUI up to the 9 seed. There's 2 games left and a lot can happen. YSU can be as high as the 3 seed and would get the first round bye and a quarterfinal home game or fall to as far as the 7 seed and have to go the road in the first round.
YSU needs to at least win one on this road trip as that would make them no worse than the 5 seed and I think no worse than the 4 seed if they beat Green Bay, which would give YSU the season sweep. I think if YSU wins both they need UIC to lose one to get the 3 seed.
The 4 seed wouldn't be bad as that would give them a first round home game against IUPUI- a team YSU seems to always be able to handle. And if they could beat them would get a quarterfinal home game. It would be pretty demoralizing if YSU gets swept this weekend and has to go on the road after losing 3 straight. Just don't want to end the season how last year did losing 4 straight.

I feel the game tonight at GB is really important. We need to develop more scoring than DQ. At times Donel is hitting and at times Jelani, but neither consistently. We need one of them to step up and get a typical game from DQ and Naz. Without that we can be in trouble. Unfortunately Garrett Covington hasn't been doing well offensively except short range shots.

No doubt about GB game being important. 2nd biggest regular season game of Calhoun era. (after last week's Wright St. game. Your also right on the money with needing consistent 2nd option. Sometimes Morgan, Sometimes Simmons, Cathcart or Covington, but you never know who you can count on. Bohannon is very dependable, but more of a clean up guy, not a primary 2nd option. I agree with you, I wish somebody would stick their head up and keep it up! Big game, I hope the play well!
-
I agree with the above comments. You know what you're getting with DQ and Naz, but YSU needs more consistent scoring from a couple others. Akuchie seems to be in a funk lately as his scoring has been going down the last 4 games. I love Covington on the defensive end, but I was hoping he would have been a little more productive scoring.
In order to get to the next level, they need to be able to win some games on the road. Only 4 road wins this season and they were against USC Upstate, IUPUI, UIC, and Detroit. The only decent win is the UIC one and that was at the beginning of conference play and UIC has greatly improved.
-
Win IUPUI upsetting, if you want to call it that, Oakland, YSU appears to have guaranteed themselves a home game.

Oddly enough IUPUI swept Oakland this year for 2 of their 3 conference wins. I didn't see that one coming at all tonight with the way Oakland has been playing.
-
Looks like YSU will be the 5 seed no matter what happens now Saturday and I think will play CSU. They caught a break with Milwaukee & Oakland both getting upset tonight. Green Bay just shot the ball ridiculous...56% from the field including 56% from 3 and made 25 of 27 from the line. It's really amazing they only lost by 10.
Them knocking down all those foul shots just never allowed YSU to chew into that lead. I was thrilled after YSU hit a 3 right before half and to start the 2nd half as they got it down to 2 but GB went on a run and that was pretty much it.
Really hope now Green Bay can get the 3 seed instead of UIC. Barring IUPUI winning and assuming YSU can beat CSU at home, I'd much rather see YSU go to UIC then back to GB for the quarterfinals.
-
Green Bay shot the ball well because we have no rim protectors. They were able to drive to the hoop with no concerns. I can't figure out why coach stays small ball almost all 40 minutes. An injection of Jamir Thomas might have made the difference. Let him use all five fouls instead of collecting splinters.

Yeah I agree. Jamir played 11 mins against Wright St and scored 6 points. He played a total of 3 mins the last 2 games. I was surprised with the lack of PT especially early on when GB was dominating the boards.
Ola hasn't played in the last 9 games.
Wonder what the deal with Jelani was? He only played 3 mins. That's the first time all year he's played less than 10 mins
-
I agree about Jamir and Jalani. We need a big to protect the inside. GB got a lot of layups and we are working for any kind of shot all night. Ola also. Not sure what the deal is, but we play small most of the time and when Mike Akuchie plays he is more of an outside guy than an inside presence. Jalani is a tremendous athlete, but at home against NK his man got around him a number of times on drives. Maybe that is the issue. I am not a fan of Devin instead of Jalani also. Jalani has a big upside if they can get it developed.

Going to be a one-and-done in the tournament the way the team is playing now down the stretch. We can't shoot very well at all. Need to recruit some shooters
-
Wasn't pretty but the result = W. DQ carried them on offense and everyone scrapped their rears off.

I’ll take the W. Nice to hold them under 70 after giving up over 100 two nights ago. We get these guys again Tuesday. They beat us here in OT so it will likely be another battle.

Why is UIC a higher seed than we are ?

Yeah for sure. It really was similar to the first game where YSU fell behind big, came back to take the lead, but this time closed it out. Thought Covington was tremendous. He didn't play the first game and I felt that and the poor free throw shooting the first game was the difference. Still wasn't a great FT shooting night but much more respectable than the first game.
Though it didn't change the seeding it was an important win to now guarantee a wining season, winning conference record, not go into the tournament losing 3 straight and avoid getting swept by Milwaukee. The only team YSU didn't beat in the conference was NKU.
Milwaukee sure ended the regular season bad losing 5 straight and 6 of the last 7. I sure didn't expect YSU to play them. Probably would prefer YSU to play CSU but CSU beating Milwaukee Thursday was the difference. That's 3 of the last 4 years YSU will end the regular season playing the same team in the Horizon League tournament.

Why is UIC a higher seed than we are ?
We were locked into 5 seed Thursday night. We each split with WSU, but they beat NKU and we did not.

They beat NKU in the 3rd tiebreaker

70 is definitely the magic number. Pretty impressive that YSU is now 13-2 when holding opponents to 70 or less and both losses were only by 2!

Thanks guys for the clarity on the seed. Hopefully they'll pack Beeghly for the game. I have been screaming for Thomas to get some minutes and he played his worst game tonight. Still think it's a confidence/mental thing . Physical talent is there.

It's a shame YSU blew a 9 point lead with under 4 to go to UIC at home or they would have swept them.
And yes likewise here on Thomas and I thought the same thing. Interesting to see Ola finally get some minutes for the first time since the last Milwaukee game 10 games ago. Thought his length helped create a couple turnovers there on the press but he seems so awkward on offense. I just can't figure it out. He wasn't that way last year especially early in the season. It's like the time off from 2 broken bones in his hand really regressed him.

Home game Tuesday night! See ya there!
-
Good win tonight! Crowd was very energetic!
-
Good win tonight!
Yes, it was a team effort in playing great defense in the 2nd half holding WKE to 21 points.
I was at the game. The crowd was really loud, especially the student section and the band.
Good win.....on to Chicago to play UIC.
-
Whoever does the count for attendance at YSU basketball games is delirious. No chance there were only 2,100 people at the game. This whole athletic department is a joke.
-
Not much different than some other Horizon games where we just tough it up and go toe to toe. Naz was going to the basket hard especially to the left side. He's one of the few players who can run the point and play against the bigs in the post.
The bad was the turnovers. This is not early season basketball vs Westminster,it's post season tournament play and they need to be careful with their passing and treat every possession like it's there last.
worried about UIC at their place. They have a really good back court and their big man has put up good numbers against us in both games. Guys need to bring their A game.
Last night broadcast on espn+ didn't have Robb Schmidt and Jim Campbell was on the call. How many years has Jim been with the Youngstown area media ?
-
Would be huge to win this game vs UIC
-
Buck,
Jim Campbell replaced the legendary Don Gardner as sports director of WKBN television sometimes in the mid-1970s. A native of Wisconsin (I think,) Campbell has done more to promote YSU over the decades than any other member of the media.
-
I would like to mention that Jim Campbell has given much of time to promoting all the sports at YSU.
He is also a Hall of Famer with the Curbstone Coaches in 2006.
-
Dumb mistake after dumb mistake. Did not deserve to win the game and didn't. Next year should be fun.
-
Hopefully we'll get a CIT or CBI tournament game. I thought UIC length on D gave us problems along with getting beat on the boards 49- 36. On the road especially in a tournament you got win the 50/50 balls if you shoot 36% from the field,25% from three, and 58% from the line.
Proud of the way the guys battled and fought back every time UIC made a run. Two years ago we would of been blown out by 30 so coach has the program going strong.
-
Got beat by their own style of play...outrebounded by 13, out-hustled, and lost a defensive effort. Some of the last possessions were unbelievable that YSU couldn't grab the rebound or loose ball, and it seemed like every ball that went out of bounds was somehow touched by YSU last. Was just deflating. And a lot of bad turnovers and just didn't take advantage of a lot of their turnovers.
I realize Quisenberry had 2 fouls in the first half, but I didn't understand him sitting for the final 9 minutes of that first half. That really took us out of the game and took too long to climb back into it and never get over the hump in the 2nd half.
Missed way too many open shots too...Morgan & Simmons had wide open looks. Akuchie missed some shots. Just felt like if a couple of those could have fell it may have turned the tide.
Great game by Covington on offense and defense.
Disappointing too because I really think YSU is a better team than UIC. They beat them at their place, was up 9 at home & gave it away at the end that basically forced them to go on the road in the quarterfinals, and then to lose that way tonight.

If my math is correct,YSU is 0 for 39 at trying to make the NCAA Tourney. I think we went D1 in 1981.

I'm not going to add up the years, but the -0- part is definitely correct.
Actually quite a few teams with similar records. Seems every year there is somebody making the tournament for the first time. Ours is coming under Coach Calhoun. Mark my words, 2020-21 is the year! Go Quins!
-
Next year will be fun. Next year is the year.
-
The guards need to score for YSU having any chance of winning. When they did they won when they didn't they lost.
-
I agree we didn't have a good night and the rebounding battle was lost by us and our shooting in large part was not good. But we played on Tuesday night till 9 or so. The players got home and the were up the next morning and got on a bus trip to Chicago ( I am fairly sure it was a bus trip). That is a long tiring trip even if it was a flight from Pittsburgh or Cleveland. Then play the next night. UIC stayed home through all of this and was just fresher in my opinion. Should have played on Friday to be more fair.

I was thinking this as well. While the game not being played at UIC was somewhat of a benefit to YSU, like you said playing 2 days later on the road was going to be tough. It definitely would have made more sense to be played on Friday as that would have still given 3 days before Monday's semi-finals. Was difficult for Oakland too to turn around and play 2 days later at Green Bay against a team that got a bye because of Detroit being ineligible.
And not just because it was YSU in this case, but I've always wished the 2nd tiebreaker would be overall record rather than against the highest seeds.
With Fort Wayne coming into the league next year making for 11 teams, does this mean everyone plays 2 less non-conference games? And I wonder how the tournament will be set up? Will the lowest seed not make the tournament? Don't know if there's time for a play in game.
-
I don't know what the league will do next year, but I hate this current format. Just take the top 8 teams. Have seeds 1-4 host the quarterfinals about four days before the semis. If the #1 and #2 seeds can't beat #7 and #8 on their home courts, too bad.
-
Any chance of YSU making one of those tournaments like CIT or others????

I've heard they should be in the CIT and could host the 1st the game.

WOW UIC just beat Wright State 73-56. I didn't see that coming at all. UIC though was a team all year that scared me. They started off slow with some injuries and suspensions and their record really was never indicitive of how good they were. They have a lot of good players and senior leadership. They've now won 6 of the last 7 and 12 of the last 16. Shows how important it is to get hot late.

It just shows how competitive our program has come. UIC looked great tonight and Dan Dakich was all over them with praise.

Tournaments and playoffs are about being healthy and hot at the right time! A couple years ago, we were NOT the second best team in the country, but we were health and hot at the right time, (even in the COLD of EWU) How many games do you win with a catch like we made to win that game? (one in a lifetime, if that often!) Obviously Wright State is COLD and UIC is HOT! We beat Wright a couple weeks ago and lost to UIC, but 2 months ago we were arguably not as good as Wright, and better than UIC. All sports is a "what have you done for me recently" activity!
