YSU Penguin Athletics / HL Track and Field Championships
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:51:33 PM »
Well, if the scores are final, Men and Women both came in second. The ladies were behind UWM by only 3 points ...174 to 171 (men were second but not very close, also to UWM). I tell you what, that 3 points is a single win, 2 place, or 3 shows. What a heart-breaker. On a positive note, some freshman and sophs did very well for us. Butler an UDM did better than expected, so some points were probably lost there. So, another good season by coach G and staff.

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State sophomore  Alison Roth won the discus on the first day of the Horizon League Track and Field Outdoor Championships to headline the Penguins' efforts. YSU took three of the top four spots in the women's discus while in the men's event, Bobby Grace was second at IUPUI's Michael J. Carroll Stadium on Friday.

Roth had toss of 45.91 meters to take the top spot. Penguins also finished third and fourth as KaiCee Kubicina had toss of 43.67 meters and sophomore Kailtyn Griffith had a throw of 43.56 meters. It was the first Horizon League title for Roth who was second in the discus last year. Her toss is the third-best mark in school history.

Grace was second with a throw of 49.13 meters finishing behind Milwaukee's Scott Erickson. Also for YSU, Sam Cassano was fourth and George Thomas was fifth.

In the 10,000 meters, the men's top finisher was Joe Copploe who was eighth while on the women's side freshman Anna Pompeo was ninth.

After two completed events, the YSU women own a 20-18 lead over Milwaukee, while on the men's side Butler is in first with 17 points, Milwaukee is second with 16 points and the Penguins are third with 14 points.

Day two of the track and field championships is scheduled to get underway at 1:30 p.m.

Youngstown State’s track and field squads are in Indianapolis this weekend for the Horizon League outdoor championships. Both the women’s and men’s teams will be looking to dethrone Milwaukee, which has dominated the men’s side and been a long-time rival for the YSU women.

YSU was third behind Milwaukee and UIC last year in the men’s standings.

YSU will bring some experience to the meet, with 11 seniors on the roster.

Adam Kagarise is one of those upperclassmen. He was third in the 400 meters last year.

Sophomore Michael Davis is the Penguins’ best chance for a win in the sprinting events. Davis has the best 100-meter dash (10.60 seconds) and second-best 200 time in the league.

Freshman Martin Solomon is a contender in the hurdles with the top time in the 400 and the second-best mark in the 110.

YSU’s top throwers are Bobby Grace and Jon Seaver, who have the league’s two best marks in the shot put.

Grace won the shot put at the league indoor meet in February, and he also ranks in the top five in the discuss and hammer throw. Cassano ranks third in the discus and Caleb Schwan is third in the hammer.

The women’s team will rely on a much younger group, with only a handful of seniors on the roster.

Sophomore Samantha Hamilton and seniors Alisha Anthony and Lyndsie Hall bring championship titles to the meet.

Hamilton won the steeplechase as a freshman in 2010, while Anthony won the triple jump in 2008 and 2009, and Hall won the javelin in 2009.

Freshman Ciara Jarrett is top-ranked in the 100 (11.68) and the 200 (24.87). Hamilton is second in the steeplechase, while sophomore Nichol Pachol is third in 400 hurdles.

In the high jump, freshman (and Horizon indoor champion) Katrina Rettburg has the conference’s top mark.

Anthony, who has never won an outdoor long jump title, has had the longest leap this year by .10 meters. She is ranked second in the triple jump.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Griffith, who was runner-up at last year’s outdoor meet, won the indoor event and has the longest toss of nearly a half-meter in the shot put. Griffith also has the top hammer throw in the conference.

In the other throwing events, Melanie Prelac has the top distance in the league and is coming off a second-place finish in 2010 in the javelin; while in the discus sophomore Alison Roth, who was second last year, has the top mark in the league this season. Teammate Kaicee Kubicina is second and Griffith is fourth.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU-Michigan State set for Friday night

Official Release from BTN/MSU:

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State will kick off the 2011 football season against Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Spartan Stadium. The 2011 season and home opener will be televised nationally by the Big Ten Network. Michigan State's first-ever meeting against the Penguins was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3.

It marks just the 10th night game in the 88-year history of Spartan Stadium.

"We're extremely excited about this special opportunity to kick off the 2011 season with a nationally televised game against Youngstown State," MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said. "Over the years, fans have expressed increased interest in kicking off our home football schedule with a Friday night game on Labor Day weekend. We believe it will be a positive experience for our entire fan base, including the student body, and we couldn't pull something like this off without campus-wide cooperation.

"Since Michigan (K-12) schools don't begin fall classes until after Labor Day, the vast majority of high school teams will play their football games on Thursday that week, making this a great way for our fans to kick off the holiday weekend. By moving the Youngstown State game to Friday night, it's also our hope that the state tourism industry will receive a positive bump since most fans will now have the opportunity to make plans to enjoy the entire Labor Day weekend."

"We applaud Michigan State's decision to move its game and clear the Labor Day weekend to promote holiday travel in Pure Michigan," Vice President for Travel Michigan George Zimmermann said. "Now, Michigan State fans will be able to enjoy both a great football game and a great Pure Michigan holiday weekend in our spectacular state."

Last October, Hollis announced MSU will open the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 31 against Boise State in Spartan Stadium.

Michigan State is 5-4 in its nine previous prime-time TV appearances in Spartan Stadium, including last year's 34-31 overtime victory over Notre Dame as holder Aaron Bates completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Gantt off a fake field goal.

The Spartans enter the 2011 season with a streak of 102 consecutive live TV appearances (games televised regionally or nationally since November 2002).

Athens, Ohio -- Jeremy Banks hit two of Youngstown State's three solo home runs and added an RBI double, but the Penguins' bullpen couldn't hold two one-run leads in a 5-4 loss to Ohio in 13 innings on Wednesday at Bob Wren Stadium.

Banks homered in the first and broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out blast in the eighth. The Bobcats tied the score in the bottom of the eighth, and they did the same in thing in the 10th after Banks' RBI double gave the Guins a 4-3 lead.

OU's Wes O'Neill walked to start the 13th, and a sacrifice bunt and error put runners at the corners with one out. Bryan Barnes brought in O'Neill for the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left.

Banks did not have a home run through the season's first 41 games, and YSU had only two as a team. Both of those belonged to David Leon, who hit a solo homer in the third.

YSU starter Blake Aquadro provided the Penguins with their first quality midweek start of the season. The sophomore lefty allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in six innings of work. Nic Manuppelli worked a scoreless seventh and was in line for the win before Ohio tied the score in the eighth.

Banks hit a two-out homer to center in the top of the first to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead, and Adam Gecewich tripled and scored in the second for Ohio to tie the score at 1-1.

Leon's homer to right in the third put YSU up 2-1, and the Penguins held that margin until Kory Burkhart brought in O'Neill on a two-out single in the fifth. O'Neill reached with a one-out single and stole second after there were two outs.

Banks' second round-tripper came with two outs in the eighth and gave the Penguins a brief 3-2 lead, but Ohio tied the score again in the bottom half. Garrett Black hit a one-out single and, similar to O'Neill in the fifth, stole second and scored on a two-out hit.

Banks hit an opposite-field double with one out in the 10th to plate Armani Johnson, and Joe Iacobucci was walked intentionally to load the bases. The Penguins couldn't add any insurance, though, as Drew Dosch popped up and Craig Goubeaux struck out.

Ohio also had a runner on third with less than two outs twice in the middle innings and didn't score. The Bobcats had runners at the corners with one out in the fourth, but Aquadro escaped as Bryan Barnes was thrown out trying to score and J.R. Reynolds flew out. Ohio also had a runner on third with one out in the sixth, but Gecewich was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to Phil Lipari at second.

After Manuppelli exited, Padraic Williams allowed the run in the eighth, and Kevin McCulloh was on for the run in the 10th. Erik Okleson was charged with the loss, allowing the unearned run in 2.2 innings.

Ryan Burgett earned the win for Ohio in throwing three scoreless innings of relief. He was the sixth pitcher to appear for the Bobcats.

Banks had three of YSU's seven hits, and the top three hitters in the line-up had five of the seven hits. Gecewich and O'Neill had two hits apiece for Ohio, which also benefitted from eight walks.

Youngstown State begins a three-game Horizon League series on Friday at 3 p.m. against Milwaukee.

What does ESPN, the SEC, or Cam Newton have to do with Tressel trying to cover-up and lie to the NCAA about the players. Whatever bias ESPN may have against O$U, real or perceived, doesn't alter the facts. He lied to the NCAA. And they don't like that. I am a Tressel fan as well (certainly not as fanatical as some of you), but the facts are the facts.

I never said that it did not matter, or that coach T did not cover up. The topic rolled toward ESPN, and I told what I thought started it all. Has nothing to do with ghetto kids that should be in some other venue (aside from college) in an attempt to play in the NFL. Neither does it change the fact that ESPN is what ESPN is (ABC, and in control).

This all makes a huge difference IP, and ESPN is a "major" player in the direction this will go. The members of the NCAA do not sit in a closet all day, and come out when called upon to administrate. They sit in that closet and watch ESPN all day, just as politician's pay teams of people to watch the news, read newspapers, and scour the internet for them. Since there is only one real sports channel ...their opinion very much matters ...and they take advantage of it..

Good synopsis power. I might add that the administration was informed by the time of the investigation. As to OSU & ESPN ...ESPN attacked coach T (low brow attack toward religion and ethics), this was followed up with ESPN Game Day being told to cover Boise State on rivalry day (it may have been Oregon vs. OSU they covered instead), when they had plans to cover OSU vs. Mich.

THAT WAS IT. OSU challenged and ESPN saw that they were not the ultimate power, and will do anything they can to prove that they are. We all know their money talks. Honestly, ESPN has backed off quite a bit in recent years, in terms of the broadcast negativity ...probably because they want to keep their most popular college ball commentator ...a Buckeye himself. However, their useless columnists are still the "minions of doom". I will also admit, that although it was not much in terms of quantity, ESPN did give YSU some solid coverage in the past.

Tressel will more than survive this. In fact, if he did not agree to 5-games in advance, he would have had less. That being said. I still do not care. I drive past "the shoe' on my way to "the ice castle". Aside from spring games, I have only been to two OSU football games ...the one against the guins. As far as Hannon's letter ...is he that much of a coward? Why doesn't he just put it on his employer's web site ...not too many programs contribute more than OSU to the United Way. People here in Columbus know what is going on. If punishment is a year or more, they replace him. However, I think many of those people do not realize that the university cannot make him AD. That is the one thing this issue did do. I guess they could, but it would be very difficult to defend the choice.

I don't see us playing Kent or Akron in football ever again - unless - something very drastic happens to our program or theirs. Talking someone changing divisions!

They do not have the money to pay us big bucks and I just do not see a recruit coming to YSU because they may get a chance to play either one of them, yea yea. Penn St, Ohio St, Mich St are worth getting pumped up about, not some low end MAC schools.

I am talking about Kent or Akron in addition to a 'money game'. With the expansion, the conference will only require we play 8 conference teams each season. This leaves 3 open games (four games every 4th year).

1. money
2. rival
3. warm-up.

We need one more team in the MVFC.
