Congratulations Coach Calhoun. Doing something for the first time in school history is an amazing achievement. However, this is just the first goal. We now have to string together 3 more wins in a row to win the conference tournament and to get into the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever!

GO YSU!

From 2003-2015, the Horizon League regular-season champion hosted the quarter-finals and semi-final rounds of the tournament. Then the highest-seed team remaining hosted the championship game. Can you imagine how great that would be to have three games, all at home, to get the NCAA Tournament?

That format would have really given us an edge.

The top four teams are really competitive with one another in my opinion and some of the other teams have their moments so we are in for a battle. Everyone knows everyone and some of our weaknesses have been exposed as have others. Our inside defense seems to be vulnerable as we have not been substituting inside players as of late and to avoid foul trouble we are playing a bit soft inside. Bryce has had trouble hitting 3's like he did in the mid part of the season which has hurt our offense. Fortunately the other starters seem ok and John Lovelace is coming along nicely as our 6th man. We need to work to our strengths and avoid 3's by players not hitting many like Miles and Malek unless they get on a streak. Garrett and Shemar can be great to get us over the top. At least we have a team that has the talent to compete with anyone in the league for the 1st time ever in my opinion.

Coach C has come a long way since that initial 2017-18 season.  He came in late and brought in Naz,Covington and Akuchie which was the core building blocks.   Had a few leftovers from from Slocum and picked up some juco guys.  That first game they were blown out at Kent 111-78 and I think he had to change his coaching philosophy that he brought from Fairmont during his 8 win season.

Year two he brought in Quisenberry and added some transfers that produced 12 wins but there was a point where they won 6 in a row in the horizon and finished 6th which was better than 8th the year before.

Year three Penguins go 18-15 and finish 4th in the league plus one win in Horizon tourney.  You could see the growth with the 3 original recruits and DQ .

Year four was 15-12 and 6th in the Horizon and one win in the tourney.   DQ was our go to guy but he was injured and limped through 15 games played . With him injured the season was a little set back but it was still back to back winning years that YSU didn't experience at d1 level.

Year 5 was going to be the year. The original core was supposed to be back but Naz transferred to Clemson,DQ bolted to Fordham and Garrett Covington blew out his achillies.  Coach added Dwayne Cohill and Tevin Olison along with Michael Akuchie back for his fifth season and the Penguins had another winning season going 19-15 and making the post season with a win over Morgan State and dropping  one at Fresno State a game where YSU was in there late.
A lot of Big ifs.  If Naz,DQ stayed.  If Garrett didn't get injured .   Add those three with Cohill and Akuchie that team was a contender.

Year 6 .   No need to go into .  We know this was the year of the transfer portal and coach C added four vets that all put up decent numbers prior to YSU.   AS of today coach Calhoun led YSU to their first ever conference championship going 23-8  with still a lot of work to go.

Thank you coach Calhoun it's been a fun ride so far.  You have restored YSU basketball as I knew it back in the 70s when coach Rosselli was in charge.   You have lifted expectations and yes we're going to b**** and moan when thing don't go as we want but for me I will always feel gracious towards what you have accomplished in Youngstown.

DQ is Fordham’s leading scorer at 17.2 per game. Fordham is 23-6.

DQ played point and Cohill  plays off the ball so I think we would of had both.

If the guys would have stayed, which one do you guys think would be a better team (assuming Covington didn’t get hurt and the guys didn’t transfer out)

DQ, Covington, Naz, Ackuchie, Mays
Cohill, Ross, Green, Nelson, Covington

I remember when Coach Calhoun came in he wanted to bring a fast-paced, exciting style of basketball to YSU.  He wanted to press for much of the game and run up and down the court, but unfortunately early on he didn't have the players to do it and had to learn to adjust.  He then wanted to bring in his style of players and that was working then the transfer portal changed everything.  I know he's said the transfer portal and the analytics has changed how he coaches and he's become a better coach.  I definitely agree with that.  I thought in the early years he'd get out coached and not make the proper adjustments.  YSU has become such a better second half time team.

Obviously DQ, Naz, Covington & Akuchie were his guys he brought in and were the face of YSU.  It was tremendous Akuchie stayed with the program and of course Covington putting in 6 years and getting to experience a championship.  Hard to imagine someone will ever put in the years Covington did thanks to the extra year from COVID, the extra year from his injury and not giving into the transfer portal.

Obviously everyone had to deal with COVID, but I feel like it derailed some of the progress Coach was making.  It obviously cost them a post-season tourney the one year then it really killed the crowds and excitement that was building and kind of had to start over.

I always thought there was some weird disconnect in DQ's last year here.  Obviously the injury was a lot of it, but something changed during that season; he also took a lot at the NBA, which there was no way he was going to get any interest from the NBA.  Fordham is having a great season and DQ is averaging a career best 17 ppg & his FT shooting is up to a career best 84%; however, his stats and shooting % really aren't much different than his years at YSU.  I would take Cohill over him if there was a choice of having one or the other.

From what Coach had said in a recent press conference, he still stays in contact all the time with Naz and Akuchie.  He has never mentioned DQ.  He did make a remark that losing Naz was a surprise.  I was ok with DQ leaving because it appeared he didn't want to be at YSU any longer, but was disappointed to lose Naz.  I think he could have been incredible last year.  And while he got to play some on a bigger stage at Clemson, I'm not sure he really gained anything by it.  He was trying out to make Jacksonville Jags as a TE.  To accomplish what YSU did last year was still impressive considering the circumstances.

What Coach did in the transfer portal this year has been tremendous.  I know there was a lot of talk how YSU was one of the best in the portal, but you never know how that plays out and how everyone meshes.  And recruiting Lovelace was a big one.  Hopefully they can retain him cause he has the chance to be spectacular.  And hopefully they do well in the portal again for next year.  You have to wonder about guys like Shemar, Hunter & Dunn, who will all be seniors next year.  Their PT has all decreased as the season has went on.

Does ANYONE know if we can get any of the seniors back for next year.  Other than the grads and Cohill what about Shelton,  McBride or Rush?    Are they eligible for an extra year or have they expired their eligibility?  Can someone shed some light on this?

We have 3 committed for next year and one of them is 7-3.  Not good stats though.  Skinny too. Like 190 or 200 pounds.  He will.need to add some weight before he arrives here. Project at best.  The other two are 6-4,I believe.

I've wondered this as well and even on Cohill as there hasn't been anything mentioned.  Cohill sat out the 2020-2021 season due to injury.  I would think they would all be eligible for the extra year due to COVID, but not sure.

I thought I heard in one of the ESPN+ broadcasts which someone mentioned that Cohill has one of year of eligibility left. No sure if that is true

Is Christian Kirkland the 6-8 recruit?

Christiana Kirkland is form Philly area and he is a good athlete i just looked him up and he has some video in HUDL that shows him playing above the rim.   Start winning and we get good players.

Too bad. I think he is good enough to start for any Power 5 team.

Mud i'm with you on DQ.  I think he wanted out even though he started every game since he was a freshman.  I too noticed how Naz get's some love from coach C and never hear anything about DQ although I don't want to speculate.  DQ has been Fordham's top scorer the last two seasons although his fg% is only at 38%.

I'm a little confused also on B Rush.  I think he has one more year even though he's listed as a senior.

Got some thoughts on who may or maynot transfer out but don't want to get the board bothered especially and hopefully there is a lot more basketball to be played.  That something we can talk to after we win the NCAA championship. ;D

DQ's junior year was strange; began with doubt if he was returning then there seemed to be a disconnect all year especially once the injury started.  He's still not a great 3-point shooter either.

I can't see why Cohill, Rush, McBride & Shelton all wouldn't have another year of eligibility.

I don't believe CoHill and McBride can return and but by may calculations Rush and Shelton may be able to return if they choose too.  CoHill already sat out a year due to injury,  McBride was a senior last year at EMU.
Lets hope we can keep Lovelace

I guess McBride did play 2 years before going to EMU.  EMU listed him as a junior both of the last 2 years https://emueagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bryce-mcbride/13704 (https://emueagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bryce-mcbride/13704)

Covington got a 6th year due to injury and COVID so I thought Cohill may be eligible as well.

Good point about Covington with a 6th year.  We shall see come the end of the School year which players stay and which one decide to leave.
