« on: August 25, 2013, 09:10:19 AM »
I couldn't get the game last night since I live in Ga and didn't have time to make it to a Browns backer bar. I know the Browns were horrible, but did Cook look good?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Can we still make the playoffs if we win out?
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:22:31 PM »
Well, can we?  I see us dropping to around 23-25 in the FCS top 25 and possibly dropping out all together, considering the losses and how we lost the last game.  Current site showing playoff projections do not have us in there at all.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Penguin Playbook
« on: October 09, 2012, 03:41:29 PM »
I was listening to Hannon's show last night on WKBN and I missed the first part, but one of Wolford's statements stuck out to me.  When asked aboutthe offense he spoke about the NDSU defensive line, and said that when we had to pass we had trouble with thier DE's and that they were disruptive.  He also said that "This isn't something that we are necessarily built for."  He said we are more of a "run and a play action pass,..... screens" offense at this point against a great team.

What does that mean that we are not "built" for it?  Can someone help me out?

YSU Penguin Athletics / CSN Article YSU VS NDSU
« on: October 03, 2012, 02:42:57 PM »
We areen't getting many nods.  NDSU is trying to get thier crown noiseto be a factor.  They are sold out and want to resell any YSU tickets returned.

Having watched several games throughout the first month of the football season, I can tell you that I think the game this Saturday between Youngstown State and North Dakota State will be epic.

This is a game that will pit the #1 and #3 teams in the nation in both major FCS polls. It was just under a year ago we had a similar situation involving the same NDSU team against Northern Iowa.

Last year, I referred to the UNI-NDSU game in the Fargodome as reminiscent of one that I saw while I was a student in Fargo in the first ever game in the indoor facility.

This year, I can only think that the atmosphere will be something like we saw in NDSU’s playoff run last year or maybe even something folks in Fargo have never seen.

I tend to think it will be the latter of these statements.

Why do I think this could be the best game ever in the Fargodome?

There were over 2,000 student ticket requests for this game.

This is also the homecoming game for NDSU, which like most schools, is the largest attended game of the season. For NDSU, the game is already sold out, although there may be some allotment tickets that YSU would possibly give back. Also, some standing room only tickets may also be available.

To me, this is like looking in the mirror in these two rivals in terms of talent and what these two squads have done this far in this season.

How do these two teams come into this seemingly Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the year?

Both NDSU and YSU come into this game undefeated at 4-0 and each have a conference victory over a common opponent. Ironically, that opponent was last year’s co-champion with NDSU in Northern Iowa. YSU is coming off their bye week after defeating UNI 42-35 the prior week.

Both the Bison and Penguins own victories over FBS opponents with YSU opening the season with a win at Pittsburgh and NDSU defeating Colorado State.

“It should be a classic matchup of these two really good programs,” NDSU Coach Craig Bohl said.

Both are lead by junior quarterbacks and both like to use the run before the pass. The quarterbacks are Kurt Hess for the Penguins and Brock Jensen for the Bison.

The Bison took a hit at the running back position this week as it was announced that starting running back Sam Ojuri would be suspended for this game amid the recent State of North Dakota Election Referendum scandal that also included nine of his teammates being charged this week. Ojuri will be the only one suspended.

Despite the suspension, backup John Crockett looked like the stronger running back in the NDSU 33-21 win over UNI this past Saturday.

For Youngstown State, there is no question on who is the top running back with Jamaine Cook.

The two defenses pride themselves on getting turnovers with NDSU getting 10 and YSU with five.

The two teams also seem to be strong on the offensive and defensive lines.

How do I think this game will play out?

The funny thing in this matchup is that the road team has won the past three matchups, including YSU winning in Fargo last year. The two meet in Fargo again this year due to the addition of South Dakota into the league, forcing some changes in the MVFC scheduling.

Last year, YSU won 27-24 in the Fargodome in the second to last regular season game of the year for both teams. Despite the loss, NDSU wound up receiving the #2 overall playoff seed and likely used the loss as motivation to gain the school’s first national title.

YSU had a chance to get into the playoffs after that game and likely would have received an invite if they would have defeated Missouri State at home but the Penguins came up short in a 38-34 loss.

Since the Bison joined the MVFC in 2008, each of its games with the Penguins has gone to the end before being decided. The Penguins won 32-24 and 39-35 in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

NDSU won 34-29 in 2010 on a long touchdown pass in the last minute of play.

I believe the two team’s offenses are nearly equal this year. Based so far, I would say the NDSU defense has the edge. But I think this game, like last year’s contest in Fargo will come down to turnovers. Whoever wins this margin will likely be the winner in this game.

While looking at the other team in this matchup is like looking in the mirror, only one of these teams will leave with a victory. That one team looks to me like will have the inside track to win the Missouri Valley and likely a top seed in the playoffs.

CSN WEST GAME OF THE WEEK

#3 Youngstown State (4-0, 1-0) @ #1 North Dakota State (4-0, 1-0), 2:07PM Eastern

I went through this game above but to reiterate, I believe the turnover margin will be the biggest contributor to the victor in this game.

NDSU seems to have gotten many monkeys off its back including winning in Cedar Falls this past week over Northern Iowa for the first time since joining the league.

The home crowd will be deafening and while YSU did defeat NDSU last year in Fargo, the crowd was not much of a factor. I think this year’s game will be different especially if NDSU gets up early like they did last year before getting turnovers to aid in YSU comeback win.

I know NDSU is coming off a national title but after watching this team first hand last week, I feel this year’s team may be a step above last year’s team. The defense looks just as strong as it did in the playoffs last year and the offense is looking more balanced.

I feel NDSU will take a stranglehold on the MVFC standings but like many of the last games against YSU, will not be decided until late into the fourth quarter. I will take NDSU by a touchdown.

North Dakota State 27 Youngstown State 20

YSU Penguin Athletics / TSN' beloved CAA
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:50:02 AM »
These A-Holes over at  TSN are now in rationalization mode to help them feel better because the CAA dynasty is over for now......

Who on here thought the TSN was objective?  I can think of two years that we were screwed out of a playoff birth because of where these biased sportswriters had us in the rankings.  The MVFC has gotten screwed too, including Illinois State last year.   Their true colors are revealed in this article.

CAA places six teams in FCS Top 25
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The concept that CAA Football teams are lurking in the shadows seems a little strange.

The CAA had become the FCS' dominant conference, only to take a step backward on the national scene last year.

But as CAA teams try to reaffirm lofty status among the best in the FCS, the conference is still home to the most ranked teams this season.

The CAA had six teams in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 on Monday, led by Old Dominion and James Madison.

Every FCS team continued to look up to North Dakota State, which strengthened its hold on No. 1 after Sam Houston State lost to FBS member Baylor and fell one spot to No. 3. Montana State also took advantage of it to move up one spot to No. 2.

The CAA had participants in the FCS national championship game in seven of the eight seasons from 2003-2010, including four title winners. Last season, only Maine reached the national quarterfinals before the Black Bears' run ended as well.

This season, the CAA again has depth across the board, including ranked teams Old Dominion (No. 5); James Madison (No. 6); Delaware (No. 12); Towson (No. 13), the defending conference champion; New Hampshire (No. 18); and Maine (No. 23).

Conference play will start to heat up across the nation this week, and the biggest game in the CAA on Saturday will be New Hampshire at Old Dominion. The host Monarchs (3-0) feature sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who leads the nation in passing yards (1,191) and touchdown passes (14).

After the CAA's six teams, the Missouri Valley Football Conference was second with five ranked teams. The Big Sky and Southern conferences had four each.

North Dakota State (2-0), the defending Missouri Valley and FCS national champion, had a bye this past weekend, which was conveniently timed considering the Bison are nursing some injured players. Coach Craig Bohl's squad collected 140 of the poll's 165 first-place votes and 4,085 points to remain at No. 1.

Montana State (3-0) received nine first-place votes, Sam Houston State (1-1) eight and No. 4 Youngstown State (3-0) seven. The surging Penguins had not been ranked as high as No. 4 since they held that spot in the final 2006 poll.

After ODU and James Madison (2-1), the rest of the Top 10 teams were No. 7 Wofford (3-0), which received one first-place vote; No. 8 Northern Iowa (1-2), whose two close losses are to Big Ten members Wisconsin and Iowa; No. 9 Eastern Washington (1-1); and No. 10 The Citadel (3-0).

The Citadel, which has defeated national powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State over the last two weekends, moved up 11 spots and into the Top 10 for the first time since being ranked No. 1 during its 1992 Southern Conference championship season.

Georgia Southern (1-1) followed at No. 11. Then it was Delaware (3-0), Towson (1-1), No. 14 Montana (2-1), No. 15 Illinois State (3-0), No. 16 Lehigh (3-0), No. 17 Appalachian State (1-2), New Hampshire (2-1), No. 19 McNeese State (3-0) and No. 20 Stony Brook (2-1).

Rounding out the rankings were No. 21 Eastern Kentucky (2-1), No. 22 Indiana State (2-1), Maine (1-1), No. 24 Jacksonville State (1-1) and No. 25 Central Arkansas (2-1), which moved back into the Top 25 as Stephen F. Austin fell out of it.

A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the Top 25. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.

During the regular season, the Top 25 is released every Monday afternoon, except for the final weekend of the regular season, when it will be released Sunday morning, Nov. 18, prior to the selection of the FCS playoff field.

The Sports Network will release a final Top 25 following the FCS championship game, which will be held Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Safety's
« on: September 15, 2012, 11:41:44 PM »
Well,  This was my concern with the "Defense" thread.....and it happened.  We are better athletically but we still do not know how to play the safety position.  Kentstateguin, this one is for you.  TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE play by the S.  #8 has to go.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Defense
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:30:17 AM »
I feel like I am the only person that has this concern, but because I was unable to attend the scrimmages and see the fall practices I just do not have a good feel for the secondary, however, here are my observations through he last 2 games:

1. During the Pitt and Valpo games the safety was out of position on several snaps. Pitt could have burned us if they would have been able to catch the ball. Valpo just didn't have the time or the speed at WR.
2. We are playing a lot of zone and the LB's always give up the underneath stuff. Why don't we play man to man? Did we play man to man in the spring? I just have not seen what we can do back there.
3. Is it me or do the LB's seem to be less significant than in years past? How are they staking up with team tackles?
4. Are we just now showing our hand to wait for conference play? What is going on here?

I would like to know if anyone else has observed this.
