YSU Penguin Athletics / Hardaway Releases 2012 YSU Volleyball Schedule
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:25:25 AM »
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball team will play eight matches at Beeghly Center and three more at a tournament in Akron as part of its 2012 schedule, first-year head coach Mark Hardaway announced.

The Penguins will open the Hardaway era on Aug. 24 against Eastern Kentucky at the Spartan Showcase in East Lansing, Mich. YSU’s home opener will be Sept. 4 against Robert Morris, and the Guins’ first Horizon League match will be at defending conference champion Milwaukee on Sept. 21. YSU will also have home matches on Oct. 20 and Nov. 3 that will be partnered with home football games.

After the Spartan Showcase, where YSU will also play Michigan State and McNeese State, the Penguins will play four matches the following weekend at the Coppin State Tournament against the host Eagles, Bryant, North Carolina A&T and Chicago State. Youngstown State’s match at Beeghly Center against Robert Morris on Sept. 4 will be its only non-tournament contest during non-conference play, and it will serve as the half-way point between its four tournaments to start the season.

Although the Penguins have just one home match the first five weeks of the season, they will play Binghamton, SIU-Edwardsville and Akron less than an hour west of campus at the Zips Invitational Sept. 7-8. Youngstown State will then head to Greensboro, N.C. for its final in-season tournament against Morehead State, UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington the following weekend.

The Horizon League portion of the schedule will begin at Milwaukee and Green Bay on Sept. 21-22, and the Guins will host UIC and Loyola on Sept. 28-29. YSU will then play at Wright State and Valparaiso the first weekend of October, and the Penguins will return for a three-match home stand over the next two weeks. Youngstown State will host Cleveland State on Oct. 12 to conclude the first-round of league play, and Green Bay and Milwaukee will come to town the following weekend. The match against Milwaukee on Oct. 20 will be at 2 p.m., two hours before the YSU football team kicks off against Southern Illinois.

YSU will head back on the road to play at Loyola and UIC to conclude October, and the Guins will host Valparaiso and Wright State on Nov. 2-3. The match against the Raiders on Nov. 3 will start at 7 p.m., following YSU’s home football game against South Dakota State. The final regular season match will be Nov. 8 at Cleveland State. The top six teams in the standings will qualify for the Horizon League Tournament, which will be played Nov. 16-18 at the home arena of the regular season champion.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Guins Report Today

It depends on why he is at summer school. To catch up, or get ahead. Being on semesters is different than the quarterly-system we used to be on. We used to not have the start of school until in the 4th or 5th week of the season. Players had summer finals the first week of camp, then they could take only 1 or 2 classes during the season.

On the positive side ...with semesters, you are still in school when the post-season begins. I mean how many players did we not have for the play-off, when they failed? Not that many, but those we did have were always impact players.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Scalzo: Peterman anxious to make impact at YSU

Youngstown

When Eric Wolford was an assistant coach at Illinois, he recruited a standout Ursuline corner-back named Dale Peterman.

Peterman signed with Syracuse instead but didn’t qualify academically, so he spent the next two years at Georgia Military College and the City College of San Francisco. But Wolford kept tabs on him.

“After I left City College, my grades were still in the dumps,” Peterman said. “I called Coach Wolford and he basically said if you come here to YSU and get your grades together, we might have a spot for you on the field.”

So Peterman sat out last season, splitting time between the classroom and the weight room and, after a pair of A’s in summer school, was cleared to resume his football career.

“He’s done the things we’ve asked him to do,” said Wolford, who also graduated from Ursuline. “I think Dale’s finally realized he’s very capable. He needs to continue to keep the distractions at bay and do what he needs to do to be successful.”

When asked about his academic struggles, Peterman said part of it was being away from home.

“You lose some type of discipline when you’re gone,” said Peterman, who has a son, Dale Jr. “When I got back to Youngstown State, my family was here and I had a support staff. They helped me in every way possible to get it done. I had to handle my business.”

Peterman (5-9, 180) joins a crowded defensive backfield — YSU has 11 corner-backs on the roster — but is confident the year off won’t hurt him.

“Even within that year, I don’t think I took a year off,” said Peterman, who worked with assistant strength coach Rollen Smith, a former Ursuline assistant. “I was lifting harder than ever.

“I think I definitely took advantage of not playing. By the time camp is over, all that missed action [won’t matter] and the links will be right back where they were.”

Wolford agreed. When asked if he thinks Peterman can make an impact this season, he said, “No question. He should have success.”

YOUNGSTOWN

In 2008, then-Youngstown State University head football coach Jon Heacock recruited 14 true freshmen in his second-to-last recruiting class.

Had they all redshirted, this would be their final season.

Tackle D.J. Main is the only one left and has been since October when the other remaining member of that class, linebacker Deonta Tate, was dismissed from the team.

“I do consider it an honor to be the last one of my class,” Main said. “[But] I wouldn’t consider myself the most senior member of the program.

“We have some new guys that are seniors, maybe not fifth-year seniors, and they’ve definitely stepped up and taken the role of senior just like myself.”

The 2008 class was a weak one, although junior college transfer Donald Jones finished as one of the program’s best receivers and quarterback Brandon Summers, a transfer from Toledo, was a two-year starter.

Heacock’s 2009 class was better, as five of the 14 remain, including quarterback Kurt Hess and running back Jamaine Cook — arguably the two best players on the team. (The others are punter Nick Liste, running back Torrian Pace and tight end Carson Sharbaugh.) Later that summer, left tackle Andrew Radakovich transferred to YSU from Penn State.

Those seven players are the only ones, out of 94 players on the roster, that Eric Wolford hasn’t recruited since arriving in December 2009. The turnover has made for a bit of a rocky transition at times — when asked about the difference between the staffs, Main judiciously said, “Every coach has their way of doing things” — but Wolford felt it was important to establish his culture, even if it meant losing talented players.

“We’ve lost a lot of guys,” Radakovich said. “And it’s been weird but it’s also been good to get to know a bunch of new people.

“We’ve brought a lot of quality guys and got rid of some guys that didn’t do what they [the new coaches] wanted to do. It’s necessary.”

The lack of redshirt seniors isn’t necessarily a bad thing — last year’s FCS champion, North Dakota State, had just two — but Wolford hopes the program is at a point where he can redshirt the majority of incoming freshmen rather than rely on them to contribute immediately.

YSU played 21 freshmen last season and 13 in 2010.

“We went through a tremendous transition here and it was difficult,” Wolford said. “Difficult for the fans and difficult for the community. But I felt strongly that it had to take place.

“We had to have a foundation that’s going to be here for awhile so we can sustain success.”

YSU brought 46 new players to camp last season — there’s 27 this year, including 17 true freshmen that signed in February — and while Wolford said a team needs an influx of talent last year, he also knows championship programs rely on juniors and seniors.

“The older players have got to be able to lead the younger players,” he said. “That’s why this is the first year I had player representatives [who led summer workouts]. This is the first time since I’ve been here that I felt like we had potentially one or two guys at every position that would be voted on by their peers to lead that group.

“So far, the indications are they’ve been successful.”

YSU’s changes over the past two years haven’t just been on the roster. The Penguins have overhauled their facilities — there’s a new locker room, new offices and classrooms, new turf at Stambaugh Stadium and, of course, a new indoor facility — and added an Under Armour sponsorship. They’ve also increased the budget for the coaching staff and for recruiting.

“I remember coming here and the locker room wasn’t done, this indoor facility was an old soccer field we used to practice on, the jerseys and sponsors were different,” Main said. “Everything has completely changed 180 degrees for the better.”

This year’s team motto is “No Excuses” and that applies not just to the players, but everyone involved in the program. Anything short of the postseason would be a disappointment.

“The expectations here are the same every year but the difference is, we don’t have any excuses this year,” Main said. “We have depth, we have players, we have leaders, we have coaches, we have everything we need.

“It’s just up to us now.”

General BS / Re: makes too much sense

Well:

It does not go far enough in my mind, and could not agree more. There should be not single public school program that does anything related to' English as a second language'. It is the ONLY language.

One issue though ...I cannot read the Huffington Post. She inherits this, and now she has become another Limbaugh ..a Liberal Limbaugh. Lot's of talk, no brain or sense of self thought. I cannot support her, so I do not log on. One thing to remember about computers ..they (the media) know EXACTLY what you look at, what stories you read, down to the detail. This does not happen with any other form of media ...unless you sign-up for it at your local trailer park. SO if you want to make a statement ...do not ever go to the site, and give them the satisfaction of counting you as another reader. If you don't log in ...they close their site. If there is a unique story ...I copy the story, and give a text-only reference ...no link to their site. I know you want to see just what "the other side" is thinking ...but that is what they hope you will do. SO it causes extremes in our news. Conservative sites, put an extreme liberal idea out ...to catch libs, while liberal sites do just the opposite.

Great Info 0505.

Some of the players that I am interested in:

Teven Williams (LB): Had a great frosh campaign.
Jamarious Boatwright (CB): Had a medical last year, because of knee, but started all 11-games in 2010.
Andre Stubbs (WR): Also coming off knee injury.
Demonte Hymes (TB): Was on scout team last year. Looked good in practice.
Chris Charles (S): JUCO.
Wargo at QB ...lots of positive talk about him.
Ashen Ward: Will be interesting to see him with an oblong ball in his hands. Welcome Ashen!!!!!
Twin Fernandez (S): I think you will see Twin at Strong and Chris at Free. All JUCO safeties. I get worried when I see this type thing.
Nick Buonavolonta (CB): Good looking Boardman prospect. Who can tell us anything about him?
John Medina: Moved up from Geneva, lots of great stats out of Poland, and played in the OhiovPA all-star game. Anyone know him?
-Edison and Nolcox at LB.
-Then we have a "pile" on new linemen on both sides. I have heard that this Myers (red-shirt last year) has been able to get penetration. I hope so ...we need it.

Does anyone know if they were able to Red-Shirt Taylor? I think he played in several games, so he will be in his second year. I have high hopes for him. He did well against Valpo last year. That is the only game I remember seeing him participate in.

Welcome Back to Penguin Football!!!!!!

Interesting that they picked YSU and ILS as high as they did. Shows that someone is paying attention out there. In a media vote, would have had it at:

1. NDSU
2. UNI
3. ISU (blue)
4. YSU
5. ILS

In mind, I am thinking:

1. NDSU
2. ILS
3. YSU
4. UNI
5. SIU (huge talent on the field, but maybe not on the sidelines)
6. ISU (blue)
7. SDSU
8. USD
9. WIU
10. MSU

Our biggest games, for position, will be ILS and SIU.

The ISU (blue) game is very big for Cook vs. Bell. Our D needs to show-up and shut this guy down. Last year we gave Bell end-around runs that a "high-schooler" should have been able to stop. We over-ran every time.

With the addition of USD, the conference should be 3-deep into the post-season, and I am hoping SIU knocks out UNI, but not YSU. SIU and NDSU are like we used to be ...if we make the play-off, we run deep.

YSU's post-season. Out of 4 possible games:
1990: 1-game
1991: 4-games
1992: 4-games
1993: 4-games
1994: 4-games
1997: 4-games
1999: 4-games
2006: 3-games

North Dakota State has been picked to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference crown in 2012. NDSU is the defending national champion and shared the league title with UNI last year. The Bison received the top spot, earning 37 of 38 first-place votes, in a poll conducted by league coaches, media and sports information directors.

The Bison return six starters on offense and seven on defense from a team that went 14-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference last year.

UNI is picked second as the Panthers earned 300 total points to edge Youngstown State (291) and Illinois State (287) in the voting.  The Panthers represented the league in the playoffs last year and compiled a 10-3 overall record and 7-1 league slate. UNI has been ranked in the Top 25 in 94 consecutive polls.

Indiana State is fifth in this year's poll, with 228 points, while South Dakota State (182) and Southern Illinois (167) follow closely behind.  Newcomer South Dakota clocks in at No. 8 in the pre-season poll with 97 points, followed by Western Illinois (90) and Missouri State (69).

A pre-season favorite has claimed the league crown 14 times (in 26 previous polls). UNI was picked to win the league last season.

« on: August 02, 2012, 06:11:49 AM »
The Youngstown State football team begins preparations for the 2012 campaign when more than 90 players report for fall workouts on Thursday. The first practice is set for Friday at Stambaugh Stadium (4 p.m.) while the season opener is Sept. 1 at Pittsburgh.

Youngstown State returns all 11 starters on an offense that averaged a school record 36.2 points and 458.6 total offensive yards per game. In 2011, the Penguins were the only FCS team in the country to rush for more than 2,500 yards and pass for more than 2,500 yards in the regular season. YSU also had 27 passing touchdowns and 26 rushing touchdowns.

Good find Indy. I also spoke with a player at Columbus State CC who is looking to Ohio State, but may come our way as well. They have a great program, with a recent JUCO championship as well. He was not aware we had a coaching change.

« on: July 31, 2012, 04:04:23 PM »
Just so everyone is aware:

Thanks for making this forum the success it has become. In case anyone would like a little history ...
  • we became of Yahoo chat site in 1992. I did not go to Huntington, and began playing as a way to ease my frustration with the bad call  :)
  • I created our own board in 1999.
  • Since the time I opened the first board (1999), we just surpassed to 100,000 thread mark. That means we have had over 100k topics discussed on the board. That is just fantastic!!

In the past year, we have had over 200 separate people post on this board (which is a decrease from the previous year). This year I hope to double this, as so many more people read ...than post. Our posters come and go as our football team performs. With a good team, we will have many posters; but still invite your friends and family!

However, as with anything that grows, it can become too large. So, I have decided to remove (prune) our old posts. For now, I went back and removed all threads that have not had any posts in the past two years. This is not threads that were created in the past two years ...only those with no activity. We may have to do more once the Guins (and ysupenguins.com) begin the 2012-13 year.

I know many of you like to look at old posts (I am one of those as well) to see what people were saying about a particular player, coach, event, etc. Or, if you are looking to quote a particular user. So, I am going to try and keep the previous two years. Our speed is already up quite a bit.

Youngstown State University head women's basketball coach Bob Boldon has announced that Wendi Mitchell and Janae Jackson have signed a grant-in-aid form to join the Penguins for the 2012-13 season.

Mitchell is a 6-foot-3 junior forward from Port Arthur, Texas, who played at Pensacola State College last season. Jackson is a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard/forward from Detroit, Mich., who played at Northern Illinois University in 2011-12. Mitchell will be eligible to compete immediately while Jackson will have to sit out the 2012-13 season to satisfy NCAA transfer requirements.

"We are very excited to add two more wonderful people to our program," Boldon said. "Wendi and Janae have dynamic personalities and will fit in well with our team."

Mitchell averaged 7.9 points and 7.0 rebounds while leading the region in blocks as a freshman at San Jacinto College (Texas). She also shot 55 percent from the floor and 64 percent from the free-throw line to earn honorable mention all-conference honors. Mitchell blocked 53 shots in 24 games, which ranked her 17th in the nation.

Mitchell averaged 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds last year for Pensacola State College. She shot 38 percent overall, 44 percent (4-for-9) from 3-point range and 72 percent from the free-throw line. The Lady Pirates finished third in the NJCAA Championship.

Mitchell earned first-team all-district honors her senior year and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class at Memorial High School.

"Wendi's athleticism allows her to be very versatile at the offensive end," Boldon said. "She will fit in very well in our offense because of how comfortable she is on the perimeter. Defending the low post and rebounding were our two biggest deficiencies last year, and she provides immediate help in both areas."

Jackson was a standout at Inkster High, earning all-conference, all-area and all-state selections in all four of her seasons. She captained the Vikings to a 25-2 record, a No. 21 national ranking and a Class A State Championship as a senior and a 25-3 record and a regional title as a junior. As a senior, Jackson averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds as a McDonald's All-American candidate.

Jackson played 32 minutes over 10 games for the Huskies in 2011-12. She was 3-for-12 shooting and recorded six rebounds, two assists and nine points.

"Janae has an innate ability to get to the rim and does a great job guarding the ball," Boldon said. "Janae is constantly improving her game. She will use her red-shirt year to extend her range and become a quality 3 point shooter."

Mitchell and Jackson bring the total number of newcomers on the Penguins' 2012-13 roster to nine. One of the seven returners, Ashley Lawson, red-shirted last season.
