Title: Jaleel McLaughlin in Denver training camp
Post by: Double ET on August 01, 2023, 11:31:19 AM
Jaleel McLaughlin was impressive in the training camp. The following is the write up on the Denver Broncos official website:

A YOUNG RUNNER
Behind Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine, undrafted rookie Jaleel McLaughlin may have a chance to make a name for himself.

The Youngstown State product showed off his speed on Monday and may have recorded a long carry under game conditions.
"He has a little burst, and there's some toughness to him," Payton said. "He's the first one here. I don't know what time he gets here in the morning, but it's pretty early. He's a guy you root for. He's shifty, and he has good change of direction. It's funny. When you put the pads on players for the first day, then you really get an appreciation of how they look in pads. It's hard to measure that when they're not in pads. Today was that day where you're just looking around at everyone and how they carry the pads. It'll be a good stretch for him, though. He's a guy that it's really important to."
McLaughlin carried the ball 227 times for 1,588 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2022, as he averaged more than 144 rushing yards per game.

We could use him for another year at YSU, especially when we play at Ohio State this year, Lol

This is the highlights of the game. Towards the end of the video, Jaleel had an impressive 12 yards screen pass and a 4 yard TD run.
He did well.

Jameel seems to have had another good game. 7 carries for 45 yards and 2 receptions for 8 yards. One td also.

He had a good game. I believe he ran 7 times for 45 yards including a 8 yard to. He also caught a 9 yard to pass on a screen play. He also had a 44 yard kick off return.
He had a total of 92 all purpose yards in the game.
You can his td run, receiving td and the 44 yards kickoff return on the internet.

I'm being selfish. I hope that Denver can't squeeze Jaleel on their opening day roster. I hope that they try to sneak him through waivers before they place him on their taxi squad. Then I hope that a certain team in NE Ohio, who has no depth whatsoever behind their star running back, grabs Jaleel. Of course, given the legendary incompetence of the Browns' front office, they would surely pass on McLaughlin even if they got the opportunity.

Another featured article from Denver local media on Jaleel.
IMO, they can’t hide him and put on the practice squad. Other teams will definitely claim off wavier.

See the article below:

“The Denver Broncos may have found a diamond in the undrafted rough in running back Jaleel McLaughlin.”

It was kind of interesting that during the game against SF 49ers, the commentators from SF, after seeing the outstanding screen play scoring the TD said that JM was really good. The Denver local press indicated that JM  would never clear wavier. The said, after the SF game, SF would have claimed him off the wavier themselves.
I thought it was kind of ironic that the team owned by Youngstown would wind up signing a YSU guys.

He is a lock to make their roster

It is important to be on the right team. If a team is already 3-deep, it is almost hopeless. Denver was the right fit. New staff & a coach that uses 3-backs; with one being injured. If he goes injured reserve, he will have 4-weeks & then he can do whatever he wants. He can be sold off the Reserve list as I understand. Lots of rumors that Jaleel is Denver's #3 though. I am happy he got another chance after he muffed that kick. That might not have happened on another team. So again, this seems to be a good fit. My only worry is that Denver brought in another back this week, despite the #1 coming back. That gives them 6 backs, with 2 already guaranteed a spot. So McLaughlin still has 4 backs to compete with. Although I saw one was added to the special teams roster, so that makes 3 backs fighting with only 1-spot on the 1st-string open.

Another article from Denver suggesting JM should be the starting RB:

Jaleel McLaughlin should be the Broncos starting running back
Aug 21, 2023, 4:00 AM | Updated: 6:06 am

BY JAMES MERILATT
Editor of Denver Sports

Does the preseason matter? Well, in the words of former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak, “We’re fixin’ to find out.”

Because if it does, Denver will have a new starting running back. If the games mean anything at all, the bulk of Week 1 carries will go to an undrafted rookie.

Jaleel McLaughlin has been the best back on the Broncos roster in training camp. And it’s carried over to the games.

He’s the team’s leading rusher, with 65 yards on 11 carries; that’s a whopping 5.9-yard average. He also has three receptions for 20 yards.

The Broncos have scored four touchdowns through two preseason games. McLaughlin has three of them.

At Arizona, his yards and score came in garbage time. Against San Francisco, McLaughlin was getting reps in the first half.

Clearly, the Broncos are trying to see if his success is based on the level of competition or will translate to real thing. It’s eerily familiar to the 1995 preseason.

That year, it was a sixth-round draft pick that caught the eye of the coaches. Terrell Davis went from trying to catch an early flight home from Tokyo prior to the exhibition opener to becoming the Broncos starter.

No one is suggesting that McLaughlin is going to be one Davis. TD is a Hall of Fame running back. But the same decision-making process should be in the place.

Twenty-eight years ago, Mike Shanahan had an open mind. After seeing Davis make a special teams tackle in Tokyo, he gave the kid a chance. As the Broncos progressed through their five preseason games, his workload increased; his opportunity grew. And TD seized it.

Sean Payton seems to be doing the same thing with McLaughlin. But will he be as bold as Shanahan?

The two-time Super Bowl-winning coach was willing to roll with the rookie. It didn’t matter that Rod Bernstine was the veteran. Or that Glyn Milburn was a former second-round pick. Shanahan trusted his gut.

Payton should do the same. McLaughlin is the Broncos most-dynamic running back.

Yes, Javonte Williams is an inspiring story. His 10-month recovery from major knee surgery is amazing. But he’s not better than the rookie, at least not right now.

Sure, Samaje Perine was a big free-agent signing. But the veteran isn’t as electric as McLaughlin.

In Shanahan’s first season as the Broncos head coach, he sent a message. The best players will play. Contracts didn’t matter. Draft position didn’t either. It was a merit-based equation.

This approach led to two Lombardi Trophies within Shanahan’s first four seasons. It discovered one of the best players in franchise history.

Payton needs to take the same approach. It’s plain as day.

Be bold. Do the right thing. Trust what has been evident.

Jaleel McLaughlin is the Broncos best running back. Make him the starter.

Jaleel had another good game. Scored a TD, had 10 carries for 45 yards, and 4 pass receptions. I saw one drop on a pass out of the backfield. His only problem seems to be picking up much larger pass rushers so on 3rd down, much like when his was with us. It seems they bring in another back in those situations. Hope for the best for him.

Apparently, the second string RB was as effective as the first string RB. There was virtually no chance for JM to carry the ball.
Denver’s swing passes to the RBs did not work. Passes to Williams and JM both resulted in losses.
