Similar to the basketball recruiting thread, I thought I would start a thread where we can recap the 2014 Verbal Commitments.
Lets keep the list here, with links to the individual threads to discuss each player. Would rather not discuss players or overall recruiting here - lets keep this thread relatively clean so we can see a recap. I will try best I can to keep it updated.
IAA Fan - can we pin this thread as well? Thanks
Deleted details and moved to post at top
-
Indy, can you modify your original post and add to it so it does not require searcing the thread for new additions?
-
Power - will figure out a way to highlight the new additions. Probably add a new post to say what I am adding, then cut and paste the list in to the new post so its always on top. Would that work?
Similar to : Adding PenguinPower and Ysuindy to list. Here is the new updated list:
1
2
3
-
Vindy, you missed one.... Nathan Pittman from Hagerty HS in Florida.
-
#44 from Jireh Prep in NC committed to YSU. Can't seem to find his name anywhere, but his twitter shows the following:
"@J_Link89

-
Sidney Sandidge, a RB from Fork Union Military Academy has committed to YSU. Also ran track...

I updated the original thread to add those mentioned below - Stephens, L Washington, Sandidge and Pittman. Still can't pin down the name of the Jireh Prep player - have an idea, but no way to confirm.
No one added at this time that hasn't been discussed before on this thread.

Jeff Rotheram, a 6-7 300 pound OT from North Olmstead has committed to YSU... Seems to have good bloodlines as his brother Matt is the starting RT at the University of Pittsburgh.

Add 6-2, 175 DB Kevin Wilson of Kathleen HS in Lakeland Florida
http://polkcountyfootball.com/?p=5913 (http://polkcountyfootball.com/?p=5913)
Check out the link for a picture
Kathleen 2014 DB/QB Kevin Wilson took an official visit to Youngstown State on January 17. Here is what he had to say about his visit.
PCFB: Wilson, you narrowed down your choices of schools to Youngstown State. After you took your official visit did it reassure you that YSU is the place for you to continue your football career?
Kevin Wilson: “Yes.”
PCFB: How much did you know about the program and the city before you got there?
Kevin Wilson: “I really didn’t know that much. I just knew that it was a big football city.”
PCFB: How much did you learn about the program once you left?
Kevin Wilson: “I learned that they have a good business program and the coaches and professors really care about you.”
PCFB: Who was your guide during your visit?
Kevin Wilson: “A corner named Julius.”
PCFB: Tell us about some of the sites that you were able to see while on your visit?
Kevin Wilson: “The inside field, the new courtyard where some of the upperclassmen stay, and downtown was pretty nice.”
PCFB: Ohio can get pretty cold compared to the weather down in Florida. How was the weather during your visit and how will you get adjusted to it once you move there?
Kevin Wilson: “During my visit it was pretty cold and it was snowing which was my first time seeing snow which was real exciting, but I think I will be able to adjust.”
PCFB: What were some of the things that impressed you about the school?
Kevin Wilson: “What impressed me was how much the coaches and professors care about you.”
PCFB: How much of the coaching staff did you meet and what were your impressions of them?
Kevin Wilson: “I met the whole coaching staff and my impression was they really care about me inside and outside of football.”
PCFB: How did they say they plan to use you in their system once you get there?
Kevin Wilson: “They plan on using me at free safety and they are looking to play me right away.”
PCFB: Will you be taking anymore official visits or have you shut down your college recruitment process?
Kevin Wilson: “No more visits. I’m pretty solid to them.”
PCFB: What should the fans of YSU expect to see out of Kevin Wilson?
Kevin Wilson: “The fans should expect to see leadership, hardwork, and doing whatever to help the team win and get another championship back to YSU.”

I hope Wolford gets more size in the remaining part of the class. We need beef up front to compete with NDSU, SDSU, and UNI. How many scholarships do we have to give out total come signing day? Does anyone know?
-
Indy:
A superb job putting all our recruits on this list; THANK YOU!
By the way, how many scholarships do we have?
-
I have no idea how many scholarships YSU has to give. Hard to say with the ability to split scholarships.
Isn't it 63 full scholarship equivalents spread over 85 players?
-
yes
-
FCS/I-AA teams no longer have a 85-player max (I do not believe). I think the max is on active fall roster.
Now a scholarship in DI is split into tuition & books ...and room and board. In I-AA/FCS they can split any way that they want (these are called equivalents); however, most split in these two parts and thus have 126 partials (or 63 full-rides). Now, this is important because you can begin to see the NCAA's purpose in offering I-AA scholarship equivalents is to recruit locally ...thus not need the room and board, as you can offer more than 63 tuition partials. Unfortunately, most good athletes know this and demand full ride, as they travel to play ...look at how many Florida, PA, and CA players we have. Do you think that they will play at YSU for tuition or room and board only? Not likely. It is important to remember that ALL DI schools (FBS or FCS) must maintain a minimum of 76.5 players on athletic scholarship.
In IA/FBS, they have 86 scholarships, but even if a player only receives a single dollar ...it is considered by the NCAA to be a FULL scholarship. So there is absolutely no splitting/equivelants. However IA schools can save athletic scholarships in the same way as their I-AA counter-parts. That is, get aid in other ways. Academic scholarship being the most common. If a player is smart enough to obtain more than a 3.3 ...then they can usually get academic scholarship, then will only need the room & board component of their athletic scholarship. Thus leaving the tuition and book half for another player; or in IA/FBSespecially, they reduce their $$ outlay. Likewise if a team can recruit locally, then they can live at home and save the school the room & board component. Thus it is so very important to recruit locally.
There is also something called scholarship deferment, which is a source of much (cough, cough Urban ...clear throat, clear throat Myer's ...achoo achoo Florida) cheating. We will not get into that as it is too complicated.
However one thing to point out is that a player only has 4-years of eligibility ...no exceptions. From the time they take their first snap (let me repeat 'first snap') in a varsity game the clock starts ticking ...they have 5-years to play 4-years of football. There is absolutely no truth to the fact that a player can play less than 1-game or 1-quarter and can still red-shirt. If they play a SINGLE DOWN, it is like playing the entire season. Amount of time played only impacts a player when he applies for a "medical" red-shirt.
-
FCS schools are limited to 63 scholarships which maybe split into a max of 85 players. No more than 30 new players may be recruited in any given year. Team size is limited to 100, including walk-ons. There is no limitation on how the schollies may be split - room, board, tuition, books, etc. Minimum of 76.5 equivalent must be carried at all times.

When, where, how is there a time to have 3 athletes/players that stand 5'8" or less on the field at the same time? Im the same height but dont understand this RECRUITING move for 2014? In addition, there are 3 RBs in the class and 3 DBs so a position change doesnt appear to be an option either. I understand the theory of recruiting the best "ATHLETE" but not sure how this benefits us...? I would suspect we will see more DL help by way of JUCO?

Yeah man. Our defense was so fast the NDSU\SDSU ball carriers had the chance to break 4-5 tackles per play.

Wasn't talking about the defense. Was talking about guys we recruited that are smaller for the offensive side like Stubbs.... Those guys make a difference.

Thanks to all for the updates. Sorry I wasn't able to keep the master updated the last few days. Sometimes real life gets in the road. :)
I am writing this shortly in advance of the Noon press conference. The YSU site lists 22 signed LOIs as I write this.
Before the tweets from YSU this morning started, we had 18 of the 22 listed.
0505 added Mosley, Squiric, Louigene and Lee today.
The names we had that are not on the list as of Noon:
John Linkosky - Jireh Prep
Nick Sheely - Fitch (although I saw a picture of him today in a YSU hat at school signing)
Tony Stephens - Fairfield, OH
Brandon Thomas - Tampa Robinson HS
Lasander Washington - Riverview FL

Must be fun to play in a defense where you don't have to fight off blocks and all you have to do is run to the ball. The game definitely has changed. While this kid certainly attacks well , I'll be curious to see how well he fights off 320lb guards at the D1 level.
