I see club seating as a step down from loge and it will be purchased by businesses. It is an idea worth consideration, I just want to see some dollar figures to be certain the area makes more than additional loges.

It's not just clubs, but suites.  Suites are normally for businesses, and clubs individuals.  At least in our situation.

JMU uses semantics when it speaks.  It will say we have not been "offered membership to any conference".  They also say "if the right opportunity comes around" they will accept it.
Here's what this means - no conference will offer unless they know a school will accept.

I know the Sunbelt offered, but we wanted a Football only membership.  I believe the offer has been outstanding for years for full membership, although I read about 6 months ago they gave up on us.

CUSA approached both ODU and JMU to gauge our interest in CUSA at the final four about 5 years ago.  ODU said "hell yes, let's talk."  JMU said, "thanks, but the timing is not right for us".  Imagine when your rival's new football program is ready at 4 years, and a team that's been one of the top 5 1AA programs the last decade isn't quite ready.  New stadium, new athletic center for football, and 23k average home attendance.   >:(

As far as the MAC - about 3 years ago there was a lot of talk about JMU going to the MAC.  We all the sudden were playing their teams in basketball and football.  We even had a preliminary agreement for one of the MACSs 1A teams to play at JMU.  That would of been the first time a 1A had played at a 1AA.    MAC coaches were openly quoting what a good addition JMU would be for the MAC.  Then all the sudden nothing happened.  I assume that was not our precise choice.

Also 3 years ago we paid to have a company to evaluate our readiness for a move to 1A, and they said we were ready.

A year or two ago I, and most fans would of told you the admin was at a point where it was CUSA (we're ready now, but CUSA isn't offering) or better, and no Sunbelt or MAC.  At this point with the new Virginia legislation limiting student fees for athletics, I'm not sure if CUSA is still an option for our Admin.    I think our out fee is at $1,000,000 for the CAA.  I think getting into a conference is more than that.  Plus television revenues have dropped for CUSA.  So there is a good chance JMU won't see 1A in my lifetime.   Having recently hit 50,  I only got so much time???

I doubt you'd go to this extreme - but we're told this is part of the reason we were outbid for the playoffs a couple years.  We were told a loss on the club was factored into our bid.

One common complaint from non club fans is the outside seats are frequently empty because the club seat holders are inside utilizing all the club benefits.  But lets be real, we all know on message boards people will complain about everything - I'm guilty of that at time too.   ;)

if there is a 3-score lead on a NEC team, I'm prolly headed back in for more tacos and beer.  :D  I'm not sure what difference it makes if they are in or out.  Our loge patrons are always in.

You'd know better than I would but my guess is that the club and rest of the expansion was with an eye on upgrading to the FBS.

That's what the fans thought.   Not that many of your posters would care, but what was gut wrenching to us is our instate Rival ODU (for basketball) went from no football to 1A in four years about 5 years ago.    Then this year our government in VA decided to pass a law limiting amount of student fees that could be used for sports that makes it even harder for us to make the move.  We got a new president about 3 years ago that does not really see the importance of 1A football, although you can't miss him at most of the big football events that including College Game and the SMU win last year, as well at the NC championship.  Our facilities are better than 1/3rd of 1A.  You'd think that would point us to 1A - but we've watched conference mates GaState, ODU move after only 5 years in 1A.  UMass left for the MAC.  Coastal Carolina is now moving up.  ASU and GSU successfully moved up a couple years ago.  For some reason we can't figure out how to do it.

The conversation on our boards is what's better - Minor Bowls or Playoffs?   I see both sides, but I'd rather be 1A with a good year being ranked in the top 25.   Give me a shot to be Western Michigan and in the Cotton Bowl.

You guys have had a hell of a run.  From 2004 - 2010 the A10/CAA was fairly consistently the top 1AA conference.  Since 2011 MVC has been the best and the last few years dominating 1AA like has never been done before.  NDSU kinda overshadows your conference, but you've had a lot of good teams.  Pretty amazing the last few years you've consistently beaten the Sunbelt, MAC and CUSA.

The CAA is a step down since 2011.  Not sure what has caused that.   Hard to figure how you are consistently beating 3 1A leagues.

Beer cans in a tailgate area.  I'm shocked.   fb

I plead the 5th on the streamers.  Must of been a real idiot that started that tradition for JMU football games.

They lived up to their billing.  Fast, strong and great players.  Hoping to see them drafted.

Isn't the whole reason of building the new press box is to open more room for club and loge seating ? They are moving all radio, tv and press over to the east side.

My understanding is that the plan is to simply create more loges, not a club section.  Loges are cost prohibitive to >99% of Penguin fans and are usually purchased by corporations, at least that's my understanding.  Short of that, one could pay $5k/year and get two loge seats ( http://ysusports.com/penguin_club/membership_levels ), which would be the closest thing we have to a club section.

What Dukester is describing would be like upgrading to First Class on a flight.  It's a luxury to enhance the experience, and affordable to far more ppl than renting a private jet.  I'd pay the entry fee and $125/seat in a heartbeat, but not much more.  I think it'd increase attendance, interest, gameday experience, and revenue for the University.

I guess I can see why there is so much inter-fighting on here.  I'll take my "programmar" somewhere else once I figure out what it is.  ;)

My wife is JMU grad, and I am a damn picky fella.  Thanks for your input on this thread and congrats on an epic season.

I would have to know how many seats would fit in a loge, then do the math. The seats would have to be about 4" wider than the current chair-back and maybe even padded. I, along with the rest of America, am getting fatter.

We could convert a couple of the lower loges just to see how it sells and the cost would be minimal. At least the labor. Like these club seats, the media section is really loges divided up and amenities removed. All of this once we expand of course. If any of you have ever been up, to a post-game or any reason, to the 4th floor of Stambaugh ...you would see it is VERY nice. Really quite impressive actually. I have been to two Penguin games in a loge. One with a private group and the other I won in a Penguin Club raffle. They treated us very well.

They charge a lot for our club seats.  it's 125 a game, but you need to donate 2,250 in order to get the opportunity to pay for two 125 seats.  It included two alcohol drinks and unlimited everything else from buffet, ice cream, soft drinks.....

1,000 seats at 125 each - or using my JMU math $125,000 a game.  From what I understand it cost over half that to operate it each game.  It is first class.  What you get is better than both the Washington Redskins Club, and Washington Nationals Club areas.

But somehow we can't move to 1A?   :-[

Move.  Please.  Move.  No body cares about your programmar on here.  Go play with your streamers.

Boy for all the hype JMU got they seem real overrated. they look slow and un-athletic.

we should shut down their runnung game with ease especially that RB, beating up on those creampuffs in his career really helps pad those stats.

if Wells can get going, im fully confident we will win with ease.

Hahahahaha

That's funny.  He's probably one of those that chant "over-rated" which really belittles your own team.

Guinfan1990 - you guys had an under rated team.  They played hard through a lot of adversity and had a great year.

Getting to the Championship far exceeded anything either of our teams have done lately.

It was nice visiting with you guys again this last few weeks.  Surprised my login still worked since 2006 :D

I want to compliment you guys on the support you brought.  It appeared to me to be around 3,500. You filled in the one quarter pretty well. You fans were very nice.   It was more than I was expecting based on what I read on here.  I'd guess you may of had an additional 1,000 more if things were handled well.

I guess from your side you'd say if not for the turnovers, and what if you won the TO battle?  To me it looked like it was over by early in the 2nd quarter.   I'm not sure why we never passed in the second half.  Our third TD we took the ball down the field with 3 long passes.  I guess Houston felt you could not score on our defense so why take any chances?

I think the game came down to your offense could not do much against our defense.    We seemed to be to be a little quicker.  I felt your defense played championship caliber, but your offense struggled.   Other than one meaningful drive in the second quarter your offense was not much of a threat

You guys traveled a lot through the playoffs, but I think the 3 weeks off would of neutralized that.  You were missing more lost due to suspensions.  Not sure how much difference that would of made.

We both had great years and no reason to think next year we won't both have the same opportunity.   You never know, NDSU may not get back to the NC for awhile.  One advantage you have over us is Bo will likely have more longevity at YSU than Mike Houston will at JMU.  I'm hoping Mike returns next year, but if we lost what I considered a bad coach last year to Texas State, how does anyone in 1A not take Mike Houston?    :P

I have a feeling our two programs should be pretty strong for the near future.  Good luck next year, and beat up NDSU enough they don't get all those home playoff games.

I'm sure you guys had a ton of great moments this year getting to the NC, but that catch to beat EW was the play of the playoffs.  Truly amazing.  I've never seen anything like it and for it to be the final play to go to the championship?  Doesn't get much better than that.

I was at all the championship games.  The 91 game my guess there was 500-700 of us.  I have the same picture that Strollo has that was taken and we were lost in a sea of green.  But I have to believe the 3 years in Marshall we sent more than 1k.  It seems when we went in 97 and 99 there was at least 2k? Am I wrong?

I was at all of them. The Villanova game had more people than the final game in Huntington, kind of odd. Then again, 1/2 of Ytown comes from Philly area. I still think we had the most back in 1994. It looked like we had around 4k-to 5k, but I also think that could have been an illusion because Boise had very few people there. The tailgating in Georgia was fantastic ...it was a sea of red, but the game was certainly not. This year is very similar to that. The team caught everyone by surprise back then people did not know what to do. I was pretty young back in 1979, but that seems to be the biggest final crowd that I remember.

Take those JMU numbers with a grain of salt as well. As I understand from my two calls, they took more opening day tickets that we did, but neither team used all of their 3k paper tickets and neither team ordered a second set beyond team and student seats, which are fixed at 125 on top of the two per player. I am also told that the player seats are not complimentary as it would be considered compensation? I do not buy that. Can any former players shed some light on how family tickets work?

IAA, I am not a player, but as screwed up as it is, you are correct. The University has to eat the cost of the tickets for the player's family. It would be considered compensation to give two free tickets to the parents so they can watch the game. The all knowing NCAA sure gets that one right  ::). In seriousness, that rule is archaic, doesn't seem like it was ever necessary or relevant and needs to change. No reason the athlete's parents shouldn't be allowed to go, and I myself would not consider it compensation. Sure, make anything above two non-complimentary or something, but jeez NCAA.

I am a parent of a player. And my ticket is not free. They were not given any free tickets

Ice, thanks for the comment. I meant to say parents didn't get free tickets. My post did say the university ate the cost but then correctly stated the NCAA considers it compensation to give tickets to players family. I apologize didn't mean to double speak there. It's too bad too.

Kinda silly they are given free tickets when being recruited and not when they attend the school.

As the game approaches, I have a few thoughts.

I love the way a feeling of invulnerability and inevitability seems to encase JMU in this game.  I guess that is based on the large number of points they have scored and their outstanding victory in Fargo.  We know how hard it is to beat NDSU there; we have done it only twice in five attempts.  But I really wonder if JMU fans realize how badly injuries had decimated the NDSU defense for that game.

Statistics can be manipulated to support virtually any position.  Politicians have exploited this for centuries.  Now the JMU offense looks scary good.  Glancing at the most recent Sagarin ratings, JMU has played only three teams in the top 100 this season, including North Carolina.  YSU has played seven, including West Virginia.  At the other end of the spectrum, five of JMU wins have come against teams that ranked below Missouri State, believe it or not.  So is the JMU offense very, very good or are the stats a reflection of plenty of games against unimpressive opponents?  I suspect it is a bit of both.

Since they started to play college football fourteen decades ago, teams with the best line play have won most of the time.  I don't expect this game to be any different.

Without a doubt MVC is by far the class conference.

To be honest you're on to something.  Yes we shut down the SHSU offense, but their QB was hurt the week before, and was a game time decision to even play against us.  How injured and how it effected him is anyone's guess.     To be honest I was not aware of all the injuries to NDSU.  I guess that explains a lot about that game.  And as I posted on our boards a month ago - If N Iowa played in the CAA this year, they would of likely been the 2nd best team in the CAA.  Personally I think they should of made the playoffs this year despite their record.

Head coach experience certainly is on your side - your coach just came from Nebraska and is used to these layoffs.  Ours comes from The Citidel   A little different.   ;)

I'm just happy we made it this far.  The last two years we got knocked out at home the first round of the playoffs.

And very true we played a weak schedule compared to YSU.  Two of our games were against the worst in FCS much to my and many of our fans dismay.

Wick - don't have access to this "Sagarin Rating" you referenced?    It must be a solid tool you use to analyze FCS football.  Where does it Rank JMU for FCS schools?

Man, that's impressive.  Of course if matches up with our weakest link - Our Freshman backup OT who struggled a ton versus NDSU.   :-\
