Title: NDSU @ YSU. lets pump it up!
Post by: lakesbison on October 28, 2013, 10:45:47 PM
Ok Guys,  You guys will easily win the next few games and NDSU will beat ILL St.

So Lets talk the big #1 vs #5 game on Nov 16th.  (jinx are for no-hitters!)

NDSU should still have the upper hand with seniority & ability to just win!

YSU is surprising people with a great year & look to get back on top of the MVFC!

(We have a group coming down to Youngstown, and should be a good contingent of NDSU fans) so where shall we party on Friday night?

Nobody in Youngstown, players or fans, will pay the slightest attention to NDSU until Sunday, November 10, one day after the game against UNI.

True--now we are focused on South Dakota, they are a much improved team that has beaten UNI and lost to us last year by only 3 points when they were 1-10.Some of their posters believe that we are unworthy of our high ranking--we will find out this Saturday.

You will want probably want to stay in Boardman.  I recommend eating at the following places:

1.  MVR -this is located downtown near the university.  It is a local YSU hangout.  It will be packed but the food is excellent italian food.
2.  Inner Circle Pizza and Wings-This is located near the hotels in Boardman.  Excellent wings and pizza and they also sell draft pitchers that are priced well.
3.  Antones-If you are in Y-town you have to eat the italian food.  One of the best places in the country for Italian foods.  Thier cavatelli is the best IMOP.
4.  You need to top it off with some Handel's ice cream.  They have been veted best ice cream in America in many circles and they also hold the world records for busiest ices cream stand.

Most people will be attending HS football games on Friday nights.  It is a big deal in Y-town.  I would say that is what most will be doing.

If you end up in Boardman, and have any craft beer or wine drinkers with you, check out Vintage Estate Wine & Beer or Magic Tree Pub on South Avenue.

Club Utopia may be fitting for you... Exit north of the hotels in Boardman.  ;D

All of the suggested places are good places to go.. but they are not YOUNGSTOWN besides the MVR Club...if you are looking for what Youngstown is all about then you need to hit the greatest dive bar in town and eat the double charred raspberry wings or the best ribs in town at the Royal Oaks on Oak Street on the East Side.  It is in a shady neighborhood but the place is safe...nobody messes with the owners...it is in no way a classy place or does it pretend to be...Johnny and Louie..the owners are true YTOWNERS and will be great hosts.  The new bars downtown are also good places...but the Oaks is YOUNGSTOWN...can't wait for the game..hopefully we are gracious hosts.

GO GUINS

Hopefully the Royal Oaks kitchen will reopen soon --they have been fixing the roof for weeks and I'm suffering from ribs withdrawal. The ribs and all of their food is outstanding and as peteonastick says it does not pretend to be a classy place (the toilet on the sidewalk is a prime example.)

Privledge has been closed for a while I believe, and rightfully so.  It was an awful place.

Downtown has some nice places.  It has a variety of types of bars, for anyone in your party.  Friday nights downtown usually aren't too busy though.

There have been a lot of good suggestions so far.  Royal Oaks is something to experience.  My first time there, I remember I was like wtf?.. But its a very neat place and have been back multiple times since.  I go to Vintage Estates in Boardman a lot, over 1,000 different beer choices (awesome flatbread pizza there too, great service as well).  Its a very impressive place, and usually have local musicians playing on Friday nights.  Within walking distance of most hotels in Boardman as well.

Yeah you can drink in both lots. Walk around with a cup is fine within the lot, but you cant take the cup between the 2.

It does matter, as does Notre Dame.

Just count the D1 schools in Ohio vs. ND...we're competing against a lot. Not only in viewership but in recruiting as well.

Pitt is far closer but no one seems to care about them.

NDSU has how many D1 schools in the state?.. 2 maybe?.. both FCS..

YSU has 10+ (I'm too lazy to make a list and count all of them).

And OSU has as big a following as any school in the nation to boot.

Just 1 D1 team thats worth a crap plus Minnesota/Wisconsin/Iowa/Nebraska wqlk on programs are ndsu biggest recruiting rival.

So does a 11am start hurt ndsu/ysu attendence ?

11 am I don't think would effect a 2 o'clock game too much, only problem is that I don't think they'll ever play earlier than noon.  I've never seen any NCAA game before 12 noon in fact.

Noon is the best case scenario I'm thinking right now, only because I know its very unlikely the game will be later than 4 o'clock considering its not a big game for the Bucks at all.
Title: Re: NDSU @ YSU. lets pump it up!
Post by: ysuindy on November 06, 2013, 11:42:46 AM
lake - Very few games in the Eastern Time Zone start before Noon and I don't recall even having a Noon start (maybe the Black Friday playoff game vs Alcorn State and McNair started that early?)

I understand you guys get some 11 a.m. starts in the Central Time Zone for Noon Eastern TV.

Its clearly a different dynamic at YSU.  Ohio State is a unique animal in this state.  There are many graduates of schools other than Ohio State that build their day around watching Ohio State.  From YSU grads to small school grads.

If the spirit of football, I'd go to the football HOF.. But both are interesting places to visit.  If you could fit both in I would definitely do that.  Since you're from so far away I would try to fit both in, you wouldn't regret it at all.  It might be tough to do, but if you make it to one early, might be doable.

Football HOF hour are 9-5, Rock and Roll is 10-5:30.  They don't stay open late.

I think both are great.  Music buffs in your party could spend the entire day at the Rock Hall, and the same goes for your big NFL fans in Canton.

If you love rock and roll, one can spend the entire day in the Rock and Roll HOF.  I believe there is a two-attraction pass that covers both.

So there are 10 D1 schools, your population is 11.5 million to our 700,000. Gives you a 1 million+ per school average while ours is 350,000.

Title: #1 North Dakota State at #10 Youngstown State
Post by: ValleyTalk on November 10, 2013, 10:28:38 AM
YSU Hall of Fame Game
#1 North Dakota State
@ #10 Youngstown State (will update once rankings change)

(Since the other thread has been locked for no apparent reason, I wanted to get another one started up)

-A NDSU win gives them the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
-A YSU win seals a playoff spot and gives them the opportunity to be co-champs in the Valley if they also beat SDSU to end the season.

At Stambaugh, these two teams have met only twice. In 2008, YSU beat at the time #2 NDSU 28-24. In 2010, YSU kicked a FG with less than a minute left to go up 29-28. After a huge kickoff return, it only took a few plays for NDSU to gash the YSU defense and defeat YSU 35-29.

Also yesterday's loss will likely eliminate the likelihood of 20,000 for this game, I still expect a larger crowd and a great atmosphere for this one. It is not too often that you get to see the #1 team in the FCS play, a team that could easily be ranked in the FBS Top 25.

Coach Tressel will be on hand for this one as he will be inducted into the YSU Hall of Fame. Weather 6 days out looks good. Around 52 degrees and partly cloudy.

GO YOUNGSTOWN!!!

Although I will wander into my seat as usual, I have very little interest in this upcoming game.  How do you compete against a team with a superlative defense when your defense is bottom one-third, perhaps even bottom one-fourth in the country?  You can't.  Wolford had four years to construct at least a better than average defense.  He failed.  His inability to recruit good players on the defensive side of the ball is, regrettably, his hallmark characteristic as a head coach.

Wolford inherited a terrible team. Has improved every single year! Will more than likely go to the playoffs this year. He had to reshape this whole program after Heacock destroyed it. We are 8-2. With our FIRST FCS loss this on Saturday. We are still a top 25 team right now. All this bashing is disappointing.....

Yes it is disappointing, but what critcizm is deserved is game preparation by coaches and players. The coaching staff did not adjust to a team that was struggling in atleast 2 phases of the game last night. I don't blame the defense as much as the offense and special teams. The issue that I have with the defense is preserving the lead on the last drive, but how could we expect that when they have not been able to demonstrate it in 3+ years. The offense was struggling and the OC did not change it up. The game plan was good if no mistakes are madeN but the conservative play calling killed us. We did not flex our muscles on offense when we needed to and the O is what defines this team.

I agree. It is only one game at the FCS level, but it was a bad loss because of UNI's record and could be significant in the eyes of the selection committee. That is what stings the most. The odds of winning the next two are lower than the odds were of beating UNI. I think that is what really  doesn't sit well with me. But I agree with you. This isn't doomsday, UNI was a good team and we never got off the bus.

The last two times we have played NDSU we have given up a TD on a trick play.  Last game they ran a flea flicker when they were only up. 1 one score ( if I recall the score correctly).  My point is that they always run a single trick play against us and catch our inept defense off guard.  The data indicates we bite on most trick plays.  The defense needs to be prepared for this.  The NDSU coaching staff probably has a check box on their game plan to run one play like this.  This is 7 points we need to stop unlike years past.

The pessimistic clown that is the AD isnt worried about attendance so why would his staff?  I dont personally know the guy but comments he makes to the media are crazy... When Scalzo asked him about the upcoming crowd a week ago he responds by saying "I dont think it will be largest crowd as we dont have the corporate support of ticket purchases".    Are you kidding me?  Why not plead for the local support and ask the community to support its local team?  Now, if it is a big turnout he can claim all the responsibility and justify his overstaffing........

Lakebison, for Italian food I suggest Elmton. Simple place but great food.  For a sports bar with Italian food I suggest LaVilla. Better TV's. They are close to each other.   If you are at the Tiffany hotels in Boardman it is an easy drive.  You can give me a call at 330-881-4***, I will stop by and guide you to those places.

Truck: I just maskedyour phone number. Too many crazies around that would abuse your phone number. If you click on his name you can send him a private message. The response will be up top where it says "My Messages".

Yes - very much a national chain.

Don't get to Cleveland much these days, but a stop at the Winking Lizard is usually in order for us - near Progressive Field.  My guess is there are better places that those back in Ohio will recommend.

Lakes - probably the only city in Ohio that isn't overwhelmingly Ohio State is Cincinnati.  And there are a lot of Buckeye fans there as well.

Youngstown, Kent, Akron doesn't matter - OSU comes first with most people.  its part of the challenges of selling tickets.  The local school is the #2 school in most of the state and people would rather stay home and watch the Buckeres on TV.  You will see a lot more Ohio State garb this weekend outside of the game.  People love a winner at the highest level - and that's tO$U.

As Pita said, enjoy your visit, spend lots of money, travel safe but go home unhappy with the result.  :)

NDSU won the FCS championship...again...and now after winning the Summit in MBB is in the big dance.  Earlier in the season they beat Notre Dame in South Bend.

NDSU has an enrollment of 14.6K (YSU 12.8K), so its not that much bigger than YSU.  I don't buy the argument that recruitment is easier for NDSU.  They are in a less densely populated region in which top talent is recruited by Nebraska amongst others.

What makes their Athletic Department so superior to ours?

It is called being the bigger of only 2 colleges (DI) in the state. Who cares about recruiting. It is called government funds. On a per-capita basis, they get more money than OSU. Ohio has Akron, Ohio, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Toledo, Bowling Green, Miami, Youngstown State, Dayton, Cleveland State, and Kent State. Also- Xavier and Wright State. Still seems like I am forgetting a couple.

We lost to NDSU at a neutral site last season in overtime, so I figure that our basketball program is quite similar.  Remember that the Summit League is much weaker.  They can win without top tier Horizon League caliber talent.

IAA Fan's point about state funding is important.  I don't know the specifics about North Dakota, but it is highly likely that they fund their two universities at a much higher rate than Ohio.  Private oil money could also factor into the equation.  Incidentally IAA Fan, Dayton and Xavier are Catholic schools that get no state funding, but your point about the volume of state schools is accurate.
Title: Re: NDSU @ YSU. lets pump it up!
Post by: IAA Fan on March 17, 2014, 09:22:17 AM
I think you will find that both schools (St. X and UD) get more government (at least state of Ohio) dollars than YSU. I would have to do some research. I know that that recently, several Catholic Universities banned together in opposition to Obama administration regulations and the answer was "no" because of the money they received. The schools argued tax-exemption was not funding, but the state money was direct. I do know that in the mid-1900's Catholic K-12 schools were in financial peril and the Government started to fund them & they did not want some of the inner-city youth to be unleashed on an overburdened public system. With nuns, brothers and priest teaching with no salaries or benefits ...it was much less expensive to keep the parochial K-12 schools opened.

I'm almost 100% positive that OSU gets no government funding at all, due to their lack of need for it.  They're very profitable, whereas most universities' athletic departments around the country lose money every single year.  There are only a handful of athletic departments that are actually in the black.

IAA Fan, I don't want to argue over something that I care little about, but the state of Ohio gives no money to private colleges.  Students at those places can receive government financial aid, which is why those institutions must abide by certain standards.  But a direct subsidy like a state school....no.

On the K-12 level, the state government gives nothing to Catholic schools, except for bus transportation.  You are thinking about the voucher programs that enable kids in dysfunctional public schools to attend a private alternative.  Many use those vouchers for Catholic schools.  That is the source of confusion about this topic.  There is no direct state aid to Catholic schools.

I see what you mean Wick. None the less, being the only fish in the sea has huge advantages for NDSU & UND.

Thanks for the good info Observer:

I just went to the state of ND: annual appropriations are:

323,043,595 for UND
211,013,140 NDSU

now we do not know how much of this went to athletics, but clearly the $$$ are 4 and 6 times more plentiful in the plain states :)
