We had a terrible mismatch between one of our guards and their #5. He was big and physical. We had to double up on him opening it up for 3 point shot. It looked like the coach strategy since Kent is not very good i shooting 3s. Well, they made them and we didn't. We had several wide open lay ups under the basket and our freshmen did not take advantage of that. Eargle played a great game. Some of his shots were amazing (not his typical step back shot). Although missing some shots, Bobby Haines and Weber looked good. Weber was tough on defense. I estimate about 3000 people (with about 200 from Kent in Yellow Shirts) in attendance. Darn, we should have won this game.

I was at the game. If we could have made one more 3 point shoot or if Eargle did not miss the 2 FTs at the end of the game, we could have won it. As I have said before, if we don't make 3s and FTs, we are in trouble. However, I was encouraged by our ability to get the ball inside the paint more. But, our inside guys have to learn to finish at the basket.

After watching the team this year, I still believe this is still primarily a 3 points shooting team. We are not very good in posting inside. We will win games if we can shoot 40% outside the arc and shoot 75% free throws. If we cannot do that, we will be at best a .500 team. Defense played well if the starters were not tired.

I have to agree. $12 is simply too much for a General Admission ticket. $7-10 is more appropriate.
Did they charge $12 at the gate? I pre-bought my tickets couple days before the game in the box office. I only had to pay $10. Yes, $12 plus $5 for parking are too much. They need to lower the price to get more people into the game. I don't know how much they charge for the women's game. $12 will not get too many people in even if the ladies are playing well.

I was at the game last night. SF was better than their 0-2 record indicated. They played a very tight defense in the 1st half and we had trouble getting open shots from the outside. Everyone of Eargle’s inside shots was contested. We started to pull away in the second half for two main reasons. First, SF players could not keep up with the fast pace on their high pressure defense. They were a step slower. YSU (especially Blake Allen) was getting open shots without any defender within 3 feet of him. Of course, hitting 15 of 16 FT helped us. In the past, with our poor FT shooting, we would have scored 7 points less making this a much tighter game. The other possible reason for our surge in the 2nd half was that Slocum had made the adjustments to free up Blake for the 3 (most, if not all, of his 3’s were taken from the same spot at the right-front  side of the basket). This could not have been accidental. The couch must have diagrammed the plays. I am going to the football game this afternoon. I hope our coaches could make similar adjustments against ISU and bring home the win. Go Penguins.

I am all for playing FBS teams. We don’t live in an idealistic world anymore. In this tough economic time, YSU needs the money (with all the cuts in state funding). Furthermore, we offer our players to have the opportunities to experience the atmosphere of playing in the “big time” program in front of over 100,000 people. Many players have personally told me that. This is not any different from other YSU’s academic teams. We regularly put our student academic teams up against top schools in the country and we were never overmatched. The YSU name recognition gained by the exposure in front of national media is immeasurable. Its positive impact cannot be under- estimated. It helps us to recruit both students and players.

ET: The Trib had issues this year. They lost their sports editor (Puskas) to the Vindicator. I think Sulonenis the name of the new one. Also, Vargo is a lover of basketball, and I really think it has been his coverage that has been stellar for us in the past. He has much to talk about now.

The links to the Warren Tribune coverages of YSU BBall in the last few days are shown below:

For the last few years, Warren Tribune had better coverage on YSU men's BBall team than the Vindicator because of the Eargle (Warren Harding) connection.

Defense deserved the credit the way they played in the last 2 games. However, let us don’t forget those 2 teams have the worst offense in the league. When we were able to put pressure on their QB’s, they had to run the ball. We lost those 4 games in a row when our D could not pressure the QBs. Our DB’s had trouble covering the receivers for more 2-3 seconds. If we cannot pressure the QB from ISU this Saturday, we will give up 30 points again.

Congratulations ladies. Wow, YSU won over Pit for both football and women basketball in the same year. This must have driven their fans crazy since they had very little respect for us. Let us hope our men’s basketball team will meet and beat them in March Madness. I can always dream, right? Go Penguins.

Whats the crowd look like. Actual attendance....(not seats sold or distributued).

Thank You.

I thought there were around 5,000, but in Scalzo's wrap up of the game he thought there were only 3,000 folks in the stands.
I was seating on the West side. It was difficult to see the number of people on the west stand. After watching the replay on MyYtv (filming the game from the East stand), we probably had no more than 4000 people. My earlier estimation of 6000 - 7000 was too high.

I was on the sidelines yesterday, obvious the gameplan was short throws and the rungame.  They wanted to protect the ball an minimize mistakes.  Didnt like what I saw on sidelines after the missed fieldgoal alot of sour faces and #35 was the main culprit.  Thats were leadership is needed, not a look of disgust.  Cook seems to have lost the extra gear he used to have.  Wonder if he bulked up a little too much this year.  Our wideouts didnt standout, not alot of separation was happening.  Was ugly but a  win!
I was up in the stand freezing my behind off with bunch old folks. I agree with your assessment. Clearly, the games plan was to not make mistakes. I am sure Hess was told not to throw passes down field. SD put all the Ds within 5-10 yards. Our receivers had trouble getting separations because of the thigh coverage. Will Shaw had defender within a yard of him in the underneath routes. It also happened to the receivers on the crossing routes. This philosophy will not work when and if we are behind in scores. The coaches need to re-install confidence back into the players and come up with a better game plan. Counting on our D to defend a 3 point lead at the end of the game with the other team is driving is simply too optimistic. It might have only worked on an 1-8 team with one of the worst offense in the league.

The defense is getting better, you have to admit. It couldn't get much worse. Offense needs fixed NOW
The play calling was terrible. I don't believe they allow Hess to attemp any long passes. The only long pass was thrown on an option play by a receiver. We were happy to grind it out with Cookie and we lost our quick strike capability. SD had 9 men inside 5 yards of LOS and the other 2 were within 10 yards of LOS. Our underneath receivers were blanked throughout the game. With this type of controlled offense, we cannot score more than 28 points. Without ability to overcome  turn-overs and major penalties, we would lose at least 14 points per game. The coaches were so concerned with Hess throwing INTs, no long passing plays were called. Hess was no longer effective. If this is the scenario, they might as well bench him and put somebody else in. We will not win any game scoring 14 points against good 1AA teams.

42 carries for cook???  I guess Pace Bellamy and Hymes didn't play much?   42 carries is unreal.
I believe Pace had 5 carries, Bellamy had 2 carreis and Hymes was back at kick off return only without any yards. Pace ran well.
