Got the win today, now on to Villanova! Should be a tougher test than Duquesne and Villanova will be the favorite as the seeded team. But I like the fight in these penguins!
Let's go for the upset!
-
Looking at their schedule the only impressive win was Delaware. They got smoked by ucf and Albany, the 2 best teams on their schedule. Everyone else is 6-5 at best

For fans like us the CAA is largely a mystery. That conference does not use ESPN+ but rather some backwater streaming outfit.
One thing for sure: the CAA forfeited their status as an elite FCS conference. Over the past five years or so they admitted nonentities like Elon, Campbell, North Carolina AT, Hampton, Monmouth, and Stony Brook. Then they lost James Madison. For even their stronger teams the quality of play, week in and week out, is decidedly inferior to the MVFC.
None of that means that Villanova is not an excellent team. They get the chance to prove that against us next Saturday and, if successful, against the monster in Brookings in two weeks.
-
It is about a 5 hour drive to Villanova from Youngstown. Not too many driveable FCS games for us. I would certainly encourage as many of you as possible to make the trip across Pennsylvania next weekend for this one. Based on some old video footage, we had a great contingent of YSU fans make the trip there in 1997 when we upset them when they were the #1 seed. Go YSU!
-
Most of those fans lived in the Philadelphia area I believe.
-
Ysu has a good following in the east because of Jaworski I would think
-
Massey Computer Rankings, which seem pretty accurate to me in terms of predictions has our game very close
It's prediction is 30-27 with Villanova having a 57% chance to win
-
They run a 3-3-5. Licking our chops if they stay in that defense.
-
I was at the 1997 game. Many from the valley traveled to the game and stayed at a hotel owned by Ron Jaworski. At that point we had more fans than ever so a large group traveled. Their field at the time was at the level of a typical lower tier high school stadium. Not sure if they play at the same place or not. We were behind big and I think got a blocked punt and Harry Deligeonus (sp) wrecked havoc on their qb from the Dline position at the end of the game. He was unlockable. Great win. The trip home that night was terrible with a snowstorm making driving a challenge, but we were all happy! Hope we can repeat this Saturday.

Wrong. SIU period
-
Not worthy of it's own thread but yesterday proved why auto-bids are a major joke.
Drake wins the Pioneer and loses to a third place team from another league 66-3.
Duquesne wins the NEC and gets bounced by a team that was the fifth or sixth team to get in from another league 40-7.
I am not bashing these teams or leagues, I'm sure that they look forward to the chance to play, but that just is not reality. Giving these leagues a spot is keeping another deserving team at home. Play-offs should be about the 24 best teams.
-
Auto bids are a joke with the smaller conferences that cannot compete with the MVCA or CAA or even Big Sky but if the shoe was on our foot and we were in a smaller conference we would be b****ing if we didn't get the auto bid though. Makes sense to get everyone who had a shot at a qualifying conference into the playoffs even if they get beat bad 1st round.

Nova 4-point favorite as of now

UNI exploited it and SDU blew them up with it.

Small group of us are going. If I can make it from Louisville KY, the drive from Y-town is half as far!!

And? UIW didn't make the playoffs and Lafayette lost to a crappy Delaware team. Just sayin.. Need to dump the 24 team auto and go back to the best 16 teams with a strict criteria for the playoff spot.

16 teams would be the best as long as they are truly and simply the best 16 teams.

Go Guins!
Ticket info has been released from Youngstown State:

Hopefully we can easily fill the initial allotment of tickets we have been awarded!

Have 9 going. Another group I know has about 7-8 going

I see the game is on ESPN+, no local TV from what I see. It would be good to attract the average fan to YSU football by having it on local TV. Anyone know the reason no local TV? Also it seems ESPN is using their own announcers so naybe the cost to broadcast locally may be high or they won't sell it.

ESPN+ has exclusive rights for the first two rounds, although SIU vs Idaho got picked up by ESPN2. Next week ABC will broadcast a game nationally.

Easily fill the initial allotment? Are you on dope,,,,man? We could barely sell tickets for a sure win against a weenie team at home,,,

I think it is difficult to decide who might be a favorite in this game. No games played as of late between a MVFC team and the conference that Villanova plays in. We always hear about how superior the MVFC is, so this game will be a big test between their conference winner and us, the 3rd place team in the MVFC. The few clips I saw of Villanova shows them to be a big team which would seem to fit in the MVFC. Also we need to see if our pass defense has improved late in the year or still has the significant weakness shown much of the year. In the Tressel years we always peaked at the end of the year in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if Phillip's team has done the same.
-
I heard that we would be stopping at Penn State and use their indoor facility for some practice, is that today?

The next step to the evolution of Phillips' team must be the ability to play well on the road. I would love to see evidence of that happening tomorrow, but I fear that we are not there yet. I also think that our young defensive coaches will not be up to the task, and that Villanova will capitalize on blown assignments. I sure hope that I am wrong.

I agree 100%

Not good.
Nova took the opening kickoff and marched down field for a td.
Nova Up 7 early.
-
I know we have been slammed for our attendance and who knows what Nova will announce but does not look like a big crowd. Smaller stadium.
-
Cheap call on that out of bounds "bump"
Weak coverage on the kick
-
Our defense is really bad
-
WE CAN NOT STOP THEIR RUN GAME!
-
Should have gone for it, but great punt
-
Our secondary is terrible!
-
Bad doesn’t even begin to describe the defense
-
that was a bad drive for the D
-
We look like a Junior High team!
-
cannot give up 7 before half
-
The offensive play calling is worse than high school
-
Perfect storm of mistakes!!!
-
Look like the unqualified coaching staff! Maybe they'll turn it around in the 3rd quarter.
-
Please for god sake get a new offensive coordinator!
-
Did not see the PI
-
The coordinators r soooo bad u can't tell if its them or bad recruiting. The players are never in a position to make a play.
-
As I posted before, our offensive and defensive scheme as well as play calling are really subpar.
-
Also. Get us a secondary coach while you're at it!
-
We are out class. And not performing well on defense. How many times are we gonna Settle for a field goal?
-
I am afraid that we just don’t have the $$$ to bring in good assistant coaches.this is not necessarily HC’s fault.
-
I am afraid that we just don’t have the $$$ to bring in good assistant coaches.this is not necessarily HC’s fault.
I'm not watching. Why? Because we are still developing our talent and we won't likely beat a team with a lot of seniors and a seasoned coach. We need too much in the way of assistant coaches. This will be a lesson. It appears we aren't doing well based on the comments.
-
I'm watching YSU basketball now! This was a pathetic display of college football! Disappointing!
-
We were a middle of the pack MVFC team. That really didn’t beat anybody in our conference. Nova was the better team player wise on D. And on offense. Hannon complimented how good their linebackers were and their QB.
Hannon just complimented how well coached nova was and they were ready for us and well prepared. We just got a junk td. Maybe we need some JT magic
Again we were a middle of the pack team and it looks like the committee got it right. My hats of to NOVA.
-
Weenie coaching staff. Have said it all along. They are a bunch of D2 and D3 caliber coaches led by a high school principal. This program is irrelevant
-
The sad thing is there are alot of very good D2 and D3 coaches in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Unfortunately our vetting process is who know not what you know.
-
Reality! Who did we beat?????? Valpo, Dukes, and RMU! Other than that a good SIU team, and TWO MVC teams we were expected to beat! We are a long way from being even close to what we used to be! Not even CLOSE!
-
Why didn't they put Brungard in at the end to get him game experience throwing and not to run? We do have alot coming back but the QB position is not good at all with Mitch leaving. I think King may have another year from what I hear . We battled but too much Villanova
-
We open with this team next year. This along with the money game we could easily enter league play with 2 losses. Tough to make playoffs with 2 ooc losses.
-

Our oc lacks creativity and our dc is incompetent. I agree that there are a sufficient number of talented x and o coaches in the midwest that are making less than we pay our assistants today. Find them and hire them. These defensive MISTAKES and BREAKDOWNS cannot continue!
-

There's no way that Brungard can be the starting quarterback and why is she remain competitive. He doesn't have the size. I like the kid but I just don't think he's our guy.
-
YSU needs to stop the BS that they don’t have money. Pay people well and your team will get better coaching. Phillips has a good thing going but if YSU insists on paying assistants $40k-$50k then you’ll always have young under qualified people as assistant coaches.
-
We lost to a better team, I need to ponder the game and the season.
-
The defense is just awful. Villanova had 19 first downs and 466 yards. The average completion for them was 22 yards and average rush attempt was 6 yards. Say what u want about developing players but we need to recruit speed and athleticism to compete and close the gap.
-
I doubt YSU would have won, but the turning point of the game was when YSU punted from Villanova 35-yard line. You cannot coach scared. Ask Ryan Day.
-

LOL... Makes no sense when u went for it on 4th and 6 and scored a TD to take the lead. Anyway, makes no sense in 2023 and under the circumstances all of the BAD game management is ON Philips and NO ONE ELSE.
-
Im not gonna say DP is THE guy, because I don’t know if he is. But please stop with the “principal” or “plenty of D2/3 coaches” crap. You’re making yourselves look silly. You act like we never went 33-28 over 4 years, and 21-24 in 4 of 5 years, or lost to Butler with not just a D2 high school principal, BUT rather a POWER 5 coach. By your logic, we should have had 4-star recruits and back to back championships from 2014-2019 with said-type of coach. Except, we had ALL of that. And last I checked, BP doesn’t have an education degree nor did he ever coach at the D2/2 level.

Nice post.
I agree.
We should finish in the top 16 this year. Let's say we finish 16th. That puts us in the 88th percentile of all FCS teams. We weren't competitive a few years ago.
One last thing......I have a lot of respect for Bob Hannon's take with regard to FCS football. He's exceptionally knowledgeable. He not a casual fan by any means. If you listen to his broadcasts he hints to everyone the talent depth and future of YSU football under Phillips and most of it is positive.
Everyone here should have known that when we played teams like USD and SDSU (both of them are still playing in the final 8) we were unable to get pressure on their QB and as a result they had all day to throw and make our defense look incompetent. We are a couple of players away and another year of development away from fixing this issue. I didn't understand how people can think you flip a switch with a coach and you get the best team in the country that plays the way you remember in the 1990's. It's going to take time to build it right. And as I've said before, we've gotten better under Phillips every single year.
Good take.
-
Nice, a couple of common-sense posts. I agree
-
I agree with the last few posts. Great year. Only bad loss was SDSU however they have done that to everyone. Mitch had a great year. Probably the best QB play I have ever watched at ysu. Others close may have been Brungard or Wells. That being said he played his worst game of the season this week. He overthrew receivers at least 4 times. 2 ended up being picks. Without those we may have won. Either way I'm really looking forward to next year.
-
It will be interesting to see the moves in jour program over the off season. Who do we bring in from the Portal and recruiting? What assistant coaching changes do we make, etc. There are questions on most of the defense and some key offensive position namely qb, rb, and Oline. Either our current guys are in and develop further or we bring in new players. We will watch this off season, but the proof will be our first game at Villanova next August. I think DP deserves our support and I think he knows what is needed to further improve our program. And will do it the right way with good people.
-
With unlimited transferring, is getting someone from the portal even going to be a viable option for teams at this level going forward? I saw that JMUs QB is transferring to his 3rd team. Unlike years ago he can stay in FBS and not sit out. I don’t see the portal being a resource much for FCS teams in the future.

The portal can still be our friend, but we should concentrate on successful D2 talent rather than unhappy FBS players. YSU under Phillips placed a tight end with the Colts and a running back with the Broncos. Both transferred up from the D2 ranks.

Nobody "Makes Your Defense Look Incompetent". It is like a 100m run ... if the guy in the lane next to you is faster, all things being equal, he will win. Likewise if the team that you are playing is better ...they will win. We had a good runner stumble against us (SIU) and we think we are "the stuff". I mean, what else did we do this season? We had a handful of good players make good plays. The problem was that Villanova's entire team was better than ours. I said that I would give Phillips another year, with the COVID season and I will. Let's start another thread with what you see for 2024 and beyond.
-
maybe we are not the stuff yet but we did do some good things this season. Would like to think that we had something to do with the way SIU played. Nova, SDSU and OSU were better then us.

I guarantee you that if you had better defensive coaches and a better DL we would have been able to stop every team. When your DE's crash and lose cosntain it has nothing to do with how how fast you run.
When you don't have the athletes to get after a QB and you give them all day to throw, it doesn't matter how good your defensive backs are, they will get burned.
You can slow very good teams with marginal athletes if they're playing together you can be a competent but outmatched defense., but when you make mistakes and you don't have the athletes it spells disaster.
As I've said before, Phillips has a very challenging job because he has to develop coaches AND players with pennies. He cannot draw the best coaches due to pay. If someone wants to donate to the team and buy excellent assistants, you would have a much better team and Phillips would look like a genius.
Bottom line is when you don't do the fundamentals you are incompetent
-
watched some of the nova/bunny game today, do not feel so bad about our loss to Nova. They were legit, gave SDSU all they could handle.

I watched a lot of it Villanova played well their QB made a few mistakes and their coach probably should have went for it on 4th and 1. Weather and SD line wore on them as they got deep into the game. Nova is better then us.

Off topic maybe, but Potesta is horrible
I’m out
-
I second that about Potesta.. He is awful.
-
This topic deserves its own thread. Potesta is an embarrassment to the university every time he gets behind a microphone. One cliche after another, and no insight whatsoever into the game of basketball. I wonder if WKBN imposed this character on us. If you need a second person on the broadcast, which is debatable, use a kid from our sports broadcasting program.

South Dakota State is curb stomping Albany. We are better than Albany. What a s*** show
-
Not a good showing so far for sure!

As bad as we played SDSU , we aren't as inept as Albany. How did they win so many games. Their QB is not good

We did look better then UA is looking tonight. It is too easy to not give YSU more credit.
So 35-0 at the half, time to look for a good Christmas movie, is Die Hard on?

59-0 the final. They could have put 100 on them

Albany has a great QB, they said he will be POY or Frosh of the year for sure. already won it for the CAA. Albany stomped Villanova. I think it was 34-3. last night was just Just a bad environment for them

Wrong. They were completely overmatched on the LOS and they lacked speed. I would suspect that if Villanova played them 10 times they would win 8 of them.
-
I watched the first half of the game where they were behind 35-0. They lack the size and speed comparing to MVFC teams. I think YSU would have taken down those guys. Unfortunately, we had to play Nova at Philly. I think the top eight teams in MVFC are better. We might be too hard on ourselves
That also tells you the strength of MVFC when CAA is considered to be the second rated fcs conference.
-
I just looked up the Albany-Villanova game. Villanova had five turnovers; Albany had none.
As others have noted, Villanova is the only CAA team that has the size and strength up front to compete in the MVFC. With James Madison and Delaware now gone, the CAA has become Villanova and the (fill-in the blank) dwarfs.
The CAA joins the Southern Conference, once the home of multiple championship teams Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Appalachian State, as a second rate FCS conference.

Could’nt agree more I never understood the fascination of being in the fourth fifth or or six best team in a conference that we don’t fit in with no natural rivalries and very hard to travel. If we were in the CAA, we would be with Villanova like Dakotas, and be a top team every year and make the playoffs a lot easier and with that would come a higher seed and more home games instead of being a middle of pack team as we are now. But Mike was said in his post the FCS will become more irrelevant.
I don’t see anything positive staying in the conference or wait. Maybe we should hang a banner Youngstown State plays in the toughest conference in FCS football and we made the playoffs three times in 20+ years ha ha ha ha we can put that next to the championship flags don’t get me wrong, I love Youngstown State but when you look at this from the big picture being in his Conference has been nothing but a failure look at this they brought in Murray state, not for football, but do the basketball program. Why aren’t we in? why aren’t we in this conference? I know the answer because we don’t have the money that the schools have for the most part that’s another story but again hey, we played a toughest conference and FCS and congratulations for that and let’s be honest we got a bottom feeder playoff team as a reward we would opened up on the road against Villanova we have been one and done but again I’m still pro these guys and I understand we’re never gonna leave the conference as long as the AD supports it . Another thing just because those teams suck. I got to the final four doesn’t matter. It just proves my point due to a conference got them to that point they didn’t have to beat their heads into the wall like we have done year after year hoping praying that we get in. Go penguins.

The crowd at the Montana NDSU game is fantasic, kudos to the Griz fans!
26,544 fans at the game and they have 19,000 season ticket holders. That's a lot of extra cash to pay for coaches.
-
1. I like to say this was a big, defensive struggle, but quite honestly two of the most inept offenses I’ve ever seen.. I mean North Dakota stayed as bad as they were on defense held the grizzlies to three and out for an entire quarter and a half and we’re only able to put six points on the board two field goals.
2 that announcer is the worst announcer I have heard hidden so long I can’t stand to listen to them. I have to turn it off and take a break. He’s making this into like the greatest game ever played. It is the worst game of the season for both teams.

Yes the Grizz atmosphere was good. All this game showed me was Montana wasn’t overrated. Plus we would lose to both teams.

Well, the offenses have is finally woke up, but the defense is still stink and can’t stop them

So what options do you have?
1. Move to a supposedly easier conference. Well would that not be an embarrassment? Look at how people here attacked WIU? You know that they only moved because they needed a conference that can support all of their sports. They were a power in the MVFC for years. Despite the OVC/Big south conference heading for twice our size, they only one team is going to make the play-off. MVFC had what? 6 teams?
2. Join the MAC? Well then I am no longer anything but a dedicated TV watcher and radio listener, as I do not have the ability to attend weekday games..
3. I mean the 3 bowl games that they have had so far were basically unknown to anyone on TV. Yet they were all above the level of the MAC. Heck, the second place team in the MAC gets a better game than the winner.. They get a Big-10 team. Although this is a record year for the MAC and he number of bowl games.
4. Miami (MAC Champion) brags about coach Martin's 6 national championships in the past 20-years. This is in their program and bio. Funny, not one of those came from his time with Miami. They were all from Grand Valley State (D-II) and his prior NAIA championship. I mean he has been with Miami for 10+ years, about time they started talking about his accomplishments at Miami.
5. The head coach of the best team in FCS/I-AA is leaving to be a position coach at a big-10 school..
-
1AA, I am thinking that long awaited major shakeup is getting near. Not going to look like I thought it would. With the conference hopping that has been going on and the money that will soon be paid to every player the P4 will separate from the pretenders and will be 1A.
The pretenders (aka low-end 1A) will be the new 1AA.
Current 1AA will in effect become 1AAA.
Question for YSU will be if they will want to move to the new 1AA or stay where they are, basically the new 1AAA. Guessing that we will stay. So what will the other, current 1AA schools do? Depending on how that plays out we would then worry about the best league for YSU.

Why would be an embarrassment to join or start another league. WHATS EMBARRASSING is being in a league with no natural rivalry and we made what 3 playoff appearances in 23 years and declining attendance and interest.
I don’t think there will be 3 different D1’s. With NIL and TV contracts it’s going to hurt FCS even more. We are in a bad spot with that. I think if anything with declining enrollment and let’s not forget most of our athletic budget is paid by the students. We are no better than the MAC . Just a smaller budget we can barely afford
MAC gets
The MAC-ESPN contract runs through at least 2026, and pays each of the 12 MAC football schools at least $1 million a year, significant cash for mid-major schools always feeling the budget crunch. ESPN also provides exposure during a time, midweek, when it has the football fans' focus to itself.
-
Based on the fact that only 3,500 people cared that YSU had a home playoff game, changing conferences would only be an issue to people that hang on to “MVFC is the best conference “ as a source of pride. Nova could end up in a similar situation. The CAA is a shadow of its former self. If they decided to move to the Patriot League, would any of the 2,915 fans that cared to go to the YSU playoff game really care? To me the mentioned attendance figures are proof of how irrelevant this level of football has become to the casual fans and even the students at the schools.

You have to wonder how much of that is fan apathy? A couple years back, it seemed like Buffalo was on every week.
