YSU Penguin Athletics / Spring Camp Update
« on: April 03, 2012, 09:42:27 AM »

The Youngstown State football team passed the halfway point of spring drills on Monday with their eighth practice of the camp. YSU was crisp in an hour-and-45-minute workout held at Stambaugh Stadium.

It was the Penguins' first practice since Saturday's major scrimmage. Besides individual work, YSU spent time on punt coverages and 20 minutes on team drills.

During Monday's extended individual period, the team focused on some of the situations that arose during the scrimmage. Head Coach Eric Wolford said the Penguins will take what was taught at today's practice and have an extended team period on Wednesday.

YSU's practice was shorter than normal because the team watched video of the scrimmage beforehand. Practice started at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

Wolford said he has been impressed with a variety of players so far this spring. He said on the offensive line, Andrew Sinko and Fred Herdman have played well stepping in for injured linemen Lamar Mady and Andrew Radakovich.

The Penguins return to practice on Wednesday. The workout is scheduled to begin a 4 p.m.

Season tickets for the 2012 season are on sale now. Fans can purchase tickets by calling (330) 941-1978.

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State men’s basketball players Nate Perry and Cale Zuiker are leaving the team, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman.

Perry, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from Greensburg, Pa., appeared in 24 games last season, averaging 2.2 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. He averaged 8.1 minutes per game this season, the second-highest total among reserves behind Josh Chojnacki’s 9.6.

Perry originally joined the team as a preferred walk-on two years ago and was on scholarship this winter.

Zuiker, a 6-foot-9 freshman power forward from Marshfield, Wis., played in just 14 games, averaging 3.2 minutes per game last season. He was also on scholarship.

Neither Perry nor Zuiker responded to an interview request.

A Youngstown State spokesman had no comment about the report. YSU coach Jerry Slocum is in New Orleans for the Final Four and was not available for comment.

The departures will leave the Penguins with two extra scholarships and the coaches are expected to bring in at least one junior college transfer, most likely a post player. Division I men’s programs are allowed 13 scholarships.

YSU signed two players in November: Bobby Hain, a 6-9 forward from Jupiter (Fla.) High, and Ryan Weber, a 6-7 forward from Roncalli High in Indianapolis. Those two players received the scholarships left by departing seniors Ashen Ward and DuShawn Brooks.

Indianapolis, Ind. -- For the second straight week and the fourth time in her career, senior Haley Thomas has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Thomas helped Youngstown State (15-6, 2-1 Horizon) go 4-1 last week, including a Horizon League series win against visiting Butler over the weekend. Gardner led Loyola (6-12, 2-1 Horizon) to a 2-1 record in the Ramblers League-opening road trip to Wright State.

Thomas, who collected Player of the Week accolades last week as well, hit .500, collecting a hit in all five of the Penguins' games. The senior tied the Youngstown State career runs record at 126, crossing home plate five times.

On March 24, Thomas tied two Youngstown State single-game records, tallying four hits, including three doubles, in the Penguins' 6-5 victory over Butler.

The following day, Thomas moved into a tie for third on the YSU career list with her 18th career home run; the long ball also tied Thomas atop the career runs list.

Youngstown State will head to Akron for a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27, before hosting Cleveland State for a Horizon League series over the weekend. The Penguins and Vikings will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 30, before wrapping up the three-game set on March 31.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Scalzo: YSU hoping Stubbs’ return is special
« on: March 24, 2012, 04:22:58 PM »
For three weeks last fall, the smallest player on Youngstown State’s roster made a big difference.

But when electrifying freshman Andre Stubbs suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 3 against Illinois State, everyone felt the pain.

“Sometimes the coaches would tell me I could have made this play and that, but I was hurt,” Stubbs said Wednesday after YSU’s first spring practice. “I’m here now.”

The 5-foot-6, 160-pound Stubbs averaged 27 yards per kickoff return last season before getting a medical redshirt. The coaches were then forced to turn to possession receiver Kevin Watts, who averaged 21 yards per return on a unit that ranked second-to-last in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Losing Stubbs was just part of a bigger special teams problem. Outside of punter Nick Liste — one of the league’s best at that position — the Penguins were awful on special teams last fall, particularly on kickoff coverage, where they ranked last in the MVFC with a 36-yard net average — more than 10 yards behind No. 1 Northern Iowa (46.2).

During the offseason, Youngstown State coach Eric Wolford and his staff traveled to places like Ohio State, Kansas State and Oklahoma and, at each stop, they saw the same thing: starters playing on special teams.

“Sometimes our starters don’t think they need to play special teams,” Wolford said. “We need to do a better job getting players to buy in. And we need to do a better job coaching special teams.”

Injuries ravaged YSU’s linebacker depth last season — key reserves Thomas Sprague, Dom Rich, Ali Cheaib and John Sasson all missed games — which forced Wolford to play his starting freshmen linebackers on several special teams units. He’s hoping a deeper roster will give him more flexibility this fall, but he’s not afraid to take away playing time from nonbelievers.

“We need more players to take some pride in playing special teams,” Wolford said. “If not, we’re going to have to make some changes.

“Just because you earned the right to be here doesn’t mean you’ve earned the right to stay. You have an obligation academically as a student but you also have an obligation to the football program and to earn your way on the field. Special teams is a big part of it.”

When asked how many starters he expects to play on special teams, Wolford said, “As many as we need. We’ll play as many as we need. Except for [starting QB] Kurt Hess.”

Stubbs won’t need to be coerced into playing special teams. But with Big Ten talent and Division III size, he will always be an injury risk.

Redshirt freshman RB Demond Hymes and incoming freshman Byron Pringle give the Penguins some home-run hitters behind Stubbs, but Wolford hopes it doesn’t come to that.

If Stubbs can stay healthy, he can be a game breaker in the slot and in the return game.

“My goal this year, first of all, is not to get hurt,” Stubbs said. “After that, just make plays. Make as many plays as possible.”

Youngstown State Head Football Coach Eric Wolford announced on Tuesday that veteran defensive coordinator Joe Tresey will assume that role with the Penguins while Glenn Davis has been added to coach the cornerbacks.

Tresey, a native of Warren and graduate of The Ohio State University, spent the 2011 campaign as the defensive coordinator at UCLA. Davis, a native of Tampa, Fla., served the past two campaigns as a defensive quality control coach at USF.

Tresey will bring an aggressive style and fiery personality to the sideline for the Penguins. During his career he has spent time at the high school, NCAA Division III, FCS and FBS levels.

He has spent four of the past five years as a defensive coordinator for BCS programs - UCLA (2011), South Florida (2009) and Cincinnati (2007-08). He has experience at the FCS level, coaching at Georgia Southern (2004-05) and VMI (1999-01). He also coached in the Mid-American Conference at Central Michigan (2006) and Akron (2002-03). In 2010 he served as the defensive backs coach for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. He coached at Otterbein (Division III).

In 2011, UCLA appeared in the first-ever Pac-12 Championship Game and advanced to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco. He also coached the safeties for the Bruins.

In his lone season with South Florida, the Bulls ranked 24th nationally in total defense (321.8 yards) and 19th in scoring defense (19.8 points allowed) while compiling a record of 8-5. USF defeated Northern Illinois in the International Bowl to finish the campaign 8-5. The Bulls defeated Florida State for the first time in the program's history during his tenure as coordinator and secondary coach.

Tresey spent two seasons as defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Cincinnati under current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly. In 2007, he authored a Bearcats defense that led the nation in turnovers gained (42) and interceptions (26). A pair of Bearcat defenders earned All-America honors and two others were selected in the 2008 NFL Draft. UC finished 13th nationally in scoring defense (18.8), was 19th in rushing defense (114.2) and put five of 11 defensive starters on the All-Big East team. UC went 10-3 and capped the season with win in the PapaJohns.com Bowl.

In 2008, Cincinnati ranked 31st nationally in total defense (321.9 yards), 19th in rushing defense (115.0) and 25th in scoring defense (20.1 points). The Bearcats were 11-3, won the Big East Conference and played Virginia Tech in the FedEx Orange Bowl. It was the first time in UC history the program won 11 games in a single season.

Davis spent the 2010 and 2011 season's under Coach Skip Holtz at USF. In 2010, USF was 8-5 overall and defeated Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. In 2011, the Bulls were 5-7.

One of USF's first stars on the gridiron, Davis returned to the Bulls football program in July 2010 in the role of defensive quality control.

Davis spent the 2009 spring season as the secondary coach at Division II Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., before moving on to Union Christian Prep Academy in Cincinnati in the fall to serve as the defensive coordinator.

Prior to his stint there, Davis spent two years as the defensive coordinator at Freedom High School from 2007-08. In 2006, Davis was the defensive coordinator for the Birmingham Steeldogs of the arenafootball2 league.

Following his USF career, Davis signed with the New York Jets in 2001 as a free agent, then played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2002) of the CFL and three years of arena football with the Orlando Predators (2003), the Carolina Cobras (2004) and the Wilkes-Barre Pioneers (2005).

The Penguins are set to start spring drills on Wednesday, March 21.

BOARDMAN

Over the past five years, Youngstown State athletic director Ron Strollo has wanted to upgrade the Beeghly Center scoreboard.

Over the next few months, he might get his wish.

YSU is looking to replace its current scoreboard with one that will feature a videoboard on all four sides — the latest update to the 40-year-old facility.

“We think we’ve found a price within our budget and hopefully we’ll get that done between now and basketball season,” said Strollo, speaking at the Curbstone Coaches’ Monday luncheon at the Blue Wolf Banquet Center. “We’ve had hurdles to cross and we’ve got to make sure we have the resources but I’m hoping it can be done in time for our first volleyball game.”

The videoboard would allow the Penguins to show video replays and expanded statistics and have more flexibility with promotions, he said.

YSU has invested more than $4 million in Beeghly Center over the past five years, installing a new court in 2008 while updating the lighting, locker rooms and offices.

YSU is also looking to play at least one non-league basketball game at the downtown Covelli Centre next season, Strollo said.

“Both sides would like to do it; we’ve just got to find the right date and the right opponent,” Strollo said. “We wouldn’t play a Horizon League game for competitive purposes, but maybe one of our [non-league] games, especially if we can do a doubleheader with the men and the women.”

Other topics covered by Strollo included:

Butler’s interest in leaving the Horizon League for the Atlantic 10.

“My initial feedback is that Butler doesn’t have any interest in moving out of the Horizon League but the reality is, anything’s possible,” said Strollo. “Really, the only people who really know what’s going on is probably the commissioner of the Atlantic 10 and the president of Butler.

“I expect Butler to be part of our league for a long time.”

Football “guarantee games.”

After playing Pitt in the opener on Sept. 1, the Penguins will return to Michigan State in 2013 (most likely in the third week of the season) then travel to Illinois for the first time in 2014.

“It should be a fun game; that will be a different experience for us,” said Strollo of Illinois. “When you talk about guarantee games, we’re always trying to go out and earn as much money as we can while staying close so our fans can enjoy it.

“We’re constantly in discussions with Michigan, West Virginia and Ohio State and, at some point, we want to get back down to the state of Florida. We have a lot of [alumni] down there and we recruit down there, so every once in awhile, we try to get back down that way.”

YSU last played in Florida in 2002, at Florida Atlantic.

Strollo said he has discussed playing one of the guarantee games on a Thursday, “which kind of helps everyone.”

“It gives the kids more time to heal and you can report early to [training] camp,” he said.

The new softball and soccer stadiums.

Strollo said bids are out for building the new facilities, which would be located across the street from Stambaugh Stadium near the current M27 parking lot.

YSU’s softball team now plays in Canfield while the soccer team plays at Stambaugh on a field that’s smaller than regulation size.

« on: March 14, 2012, 03:26:06 PM »
Youngstown State senior first baseman Jeremy Banks has been named the Central Region Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com, the website announced on March 14.

Banks, who is also the Horizon League Batter of the Week, hit .545 with two doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs in a three-game series at VMI over the weekend. He drew three walks and was hit by a pitch to post an on-base percentage of .667. In Sunday's 10-2 win over the Keydets, Banks hit a solo homer in the first inning and a go-ahead three-run round tripper in the eighth.

Banks leads the Horizon League in in batting average (.463), on-base percentage (.559), slugging percentage (.889), RBIs (24), home runs (5) and doubles (8).

Banks and the Penguins will start a three-game series with Milwaukee on Friday at Eastwood Field. Friday's game will be YSU's 2012 home and Horizon League opener.

Kansas City, Mo. -- Youngstown State sophomore Kendrick Perry (Ocoee, Fla.) was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 12 Second-Team, the association announced on Wednesday.

Perry was named a First-Team All-Horizon League selection in 2011-12 and led the league in overall (16.8 ppg) and league-only (16.8 ppg) scoring. He also became just the fifth player in league history to lead the circuit in scoring and steals (2.4 spg) in conference play.

Perry also became the first Youngstown State player to earn first-team all-conference laurels since Quin Humphrey in 2006-07 and 2005-06.

The first sophomore in school history to earn first-team all-conference honors, Perry scored a team-best 521 points and became the first player to score 500 points in a season since Humphrey in 2006-07. He is also the first sophomore to score at least 500 points since Reggie Kemp in 1989-90.

Perry, who set the YSU single-season steals record with 24, led the league with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0, ranked second in steals (2.4) in all games, ranked tied for third in assists per game (3.9) and ranked tied for 10th with 1.8 3-pointers made per game.

1184
Indianapolis -- Youngstown State senior first baseman Jeremy Banks has been named the Horizon League Batter of the Week for the second consecutive week, this time for the period of March 5-11, the conference office announced on March 12.

Banks becomes the first Penguin to repeat as the league's player week since YSU joined the conference in 2002. He is also the first conference player to win batter-of-the-week accolades since Wright State's Ross Oeder four years ago.

Banks batted .545 with three home runs, two doubles and eight RBIs over the weekend in YSU's three games at VMI. He reached base in 10 of his 15 plate appearances for an on-base percentage of .667, and he posted a slugging percentage of 1.545. In the Penguins' 10-2 win on Sunday, he hit a solo homer in the first inning and a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth.

Banks leads the Horizon League in in batting average (.481), on-base percentage (.578), slugging percentage (.923), RBIs (23), home runs (5) and doubles (8).

UIC's Brian Evak was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week.

YSU will play at Norfolk State on Tuesday before welcoming Milwaukee to Eastwood Field on Friday for the start of a three-game series.

1185
Lexington, Va. -- Jeremy Banks hit two home runs, and the Youngstown State baseball team scored nine times in the final two innings to beat VMI 10-2 on Sunday at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Banks and Marcus Heath both drove in four runs, and the Penguins played well in all facets of the game. They had 13 hits, did not commit an error and got strong pitching from Pat Shedlock and Nic Manuppelli.

Both of Banks' two hits on the day left the park, and Heath also had two hits for YSU, which enjoyed its first win of the season. Five total Penguins had two hits apiece.

Shedlock allowed two runs on four hits and three walks in six innings while striking out four to keep the Penguins close in what was originally a pitchers' duel. Manuppelli allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning two in three innings to earn the win.

"Shedlock did an outstanding job today of giving us what we needed," YSU head coach Rich Pasquale said. "Manuppelli was awesome after being out for a while."

"Words cannot describe what JB (Banks) does for this team," Pasquale added. "He is a special person. His leadership on and off the field is second to none."

Banks hit a two-out solo homer in the first to give YSU a 1-0 lead, and that stood until VMI scored twice in the third. Nick Dwyer and Gary LeClair started the inning with back-to-back doubles to knot the game, and LeClair scored on a ground out to give VMI a 2-1 lead.

Shedlock allowed just a walk and an infield single over the next three innings, and he struck out the side in the sixth to end a solid day.

Manuppelli worked around a one-out double in the seventh to keep the score 2-1, and the Penguins erupted for their largest outburst of the season with a five-run eighth. Jason Shirley led off with a single to left center, and Drew Dosch drew a five-pitch walk to set the stage for Banks. Reliever Michael Devine came in to pitch, and Banks greeted him with a three-run homer to left on a 1-1 pitch to put the Penguins up 4-2. Marcus Heath then doubled in Craig Goubeaux three batters later, and Heath scored on a Kevin Hix RBI single.

In the ninth, Goubeaux drew a bases-loaded walk, and Heath blew the game open with a three-run double that plated Goubeaux, Banks and Dosch.

Travis Thomas took the loss for VMI, allowing two runs in two innings of relief. Each of VMI's six pitchers allowed at least one run.

YSU will remain in Virginia to play at Norfolk State on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
