Just beat Kent 68-49, AT Kent!!! First time since 1996! For such a young team, with an AWESOME recruiting class coming in next year..... Better get on board with Coach Barnes and Co.......
The only program that's really going anywhere!
Great job ladies!!!!
-
Hopefully he doesnt go anywhere.............
-
My goodness, Ron Strollo, hired Coach Barnes. Are the Strollo nay sayers paying attention?
Congrats to Coach and team. Such a good win tonight.
-
Not just winning at Kent, but dominating them late in the game. The lead never got smaller than 9 points in the 2nd half I believe! For a team that starts 2 freshman and a sophomore, man this is impressive. Way to go!!!

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone as everyone on this board seems to think the MAC is chump change compare to YSU. This should be a gimme game for YSU. Beating kent doesn't equal 2 All-Americans and a 3rd place finisher at the national meet, which I believe YSU's track and field team had last year. Excitement is good. But statements like this are just plain ridiculous.

It's a big deal because we have not beaten Kent in forever, men or women's basketball. As for my statement on the only program heading upward, I meant out of the 3 (Football, M- Baskeball, W- Basketball)

Kent State stinks, as did Niagara, so we need to curtail our enthusiasm until we see how we stack up in league play. Nevertheless, there are encouraging signs. Ball movement and scoring distribution have been really good. We could not throw the ball into an ocean in the first sixteen minutes, yet finished the game shooting 50%. More impressive to me was the defensive intensity against a team that was taller at virtually every position. We battled them even on the boards. Their 6'4" center was not a factor in the game. A second tall player who scored ten against us in the first half got nothing after intermission. Kent scored 11 points in the second half until garbage time started at 61-38 with about four minutes left. Overall a promising and unexpected start from a ridiculously young team.
-
Always good to win!

Yes, but we wouldn't classify these games as games that shouldn't be played. The OOC schedule turns out to be a very smart one for a young team that needs time to gel--the weaker teams are toward the beginning and the tougher teams cluster at the end of the OOC schedule. (Was this an accident or done on purpose?) I'm looking at this and thinking to myself that this team hasn't even hit its stride yet.
-
Ladies destroyed Radford 70-44 today to improve to 3-0 on the season! Bucknell coming up on Tuesday at home.
-
Off to nice start. Have not played the highest quality of teams, but they are undefeated, and the team is getting a chance to gel, while new players get experience that will prove to be valuable as the season progresses.
GO PENGUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Nice job Ladies. At least one program on the rise.
-
FWIW, YSU is favored to win their next 7 games, which would put them at 10-0 heading into Pitt. This is of course based on a computer, but it shows we have a great opportunity to start out this season's first 10 games with 2 losses or less!

I've been watching the ratings, too, and they are still fluctuating a lot because of the SoS. (If YSU wins a game, the other teams is then 0-1 or 0-2, so our SoS is low and the other team's is high.) However, I agree with the possibility of 10-0. This week will be telling. Bucknell will be a good test of how far this team has advanced. Still a lot of room to improve, but I have lots of confidence in Coach Barnes.
I recommend everyone show up Tuesday for the women, if they can. Get on board now before the bandwagon begins. Horizon League is going to have lots of good WBB games this year.
-
Tuesday will be a good test against a solid Bucknell team.
-
Anybody see this video from the women's basketball team? Looks awesome.

-
Big test tonight against a good Bucknell team! Be nice to see some support for our ladies!
-
Man what a good, tough win tonight for the ladies 69-54! Getting after it defensively and that's very good to see. 4-0 and keep it coming!
-
Yes Bucknell kept coming back and the Lady Pens kept it tight. These were two very good teams!
-
very nice win
-
Now that the game is recorded in the win column, I am glad that Bucknell made a run and cut our 14 point lead to 6 with under four minutes remaining. First real pressure of the season. We responded with a 9-0 run to close out the game. Love the team defense. Offense has been sporadic but it will come.
There are some really good teams in the Horizon League. Green Bay beat Purdue and clobbered Marquette and Duquesne. Wright State has a few exceptional athletes. There will be some rough times as our team is very young and we are not very big. But they are a pleasure to watch.
-
"The YSU WBB team is filled with players that the big-time programs didn't want, and the schedule is filled with second-rate teams not going anywhere. Mark my words: This team will end the season below .500 and you'll be clamoring for Barnes to leave town."--Paladin.
No, Paladin didn't say this. I made it up. Paladin has not participated in this thread yet, but I am trying to anticipate what he will say when he arrives. Sorry, Pally, but you have a reputation.
Barnes said in his interview earlier in the week that he had not worked much with the offense yet. Imagine what will happen if the offense becomes as good as the D we saw last night. The 9-0 run at the end came out of nowhere.
Here's a kudo to Kelsea Newman, who keeps coming off the bench to spark the team. Most improved player from last year.
-
Benjamin might be one of the quickest girls I've ever seen on a basketball court.. And she can really shoot the ball well too. She's small but she can really ball. Great find by Barnes!
-
YSU Mens and women's basketball both compete at the 1a level. Time for the YSU football team to the same.
The women's basketball team has a long tough schedule. Barring injuries, the YSU women look like contenders.............
-
1a ...ALL I-AA/FCS schools that have basketball programs cannot compete at the IA/FBS level, as no such NCAA distinction exists outside of football. Obviously Butler does not play any type of lower-division basketball (ask the former #5 Tar Heels) do they?
In the old days (pre-1984) an individual school could compete at different levels. For example Dayton was DI in basketball and baseball, while being D-III in football. In 1984, the NCAA created the Non-scholarship DI (as part of I-AA) as a way to keep these schools DI in all sports.
-
Ok, instead of 1a basketball lets call it as does the NCAA ,Div1 basketball. YSU basketball teams are both DIV 1 not Div 11 or Div 111. In other words the YSU basketball teams play at the highest NCAA level. Also there is the NAIA. Regardless, YSU plays basketball at the highest level, no matter the reason. YSU should also participate in football at the highest level.................

No, it was Troy. :)

WHEW!
@YSUsports: WBB: YSU escapes with a 51-50 win over Nicholls State. Benjamin hit a FT with 7 seconds left for the win. Guins were 12-for-14 on FTs in 2nd
-
Against Nicholls State: Defense was once again spectacular, but one of the ugliest offense performances I've seen from YSU women in a long time. Trying to dribble through people, telegraphing passes, and the return of the infamous pass to nowhere from the pre-WNIT era. Really hope Barnes fixes the offense soon. I have lots of confidence in him, but this one was tough to watch.
-
Agreed the offense needs some work. Way too many turnovers but the good teams are still able to win games with defense if the offense is struggling.... Came out with the W which is all that counts! Keep it going ladies!
-
We committed 27 turnovers and shot just 34%. How do you win under those circumstances: by out-rebounding a much taller team by 12 and holding them to under 27% shooting. Our starting guards committed 16 of those turnovers. But remember, we are talking about two freshmen and a sophomore. Mistakes are inevitable. Benjamin had her first poor collegiate game with 8 turnovers. Let us see how she and the others respond tomorrow. All wins, including this one, will look very good after the season.
-
i watched the stream online (granted on my phone) while I watched football at my friends, and seems they left a lot of points on the board with missed layups, and ect. They played sloppy but its not a bad thing when you play at your worse and still come away with a W.
-
Women are now live vs. Tennessee State. Up 13-6 early shooting 6 of 6 from the floor.
Live video: http://www.ovcdigitalnetwork.com/watch/?Live=2059
-
A great start--too bad they can't sustain their momentum. Not sure what to make of what we are seeing, but not as bad as yesterday. There's no concern for ball protection and I'm really surprised at how many layups and inside shorts are missed. At least the pass to nowhere seems to have disappeared. I'm hoping all this gets fixed before conference.
-
Improved second half. Defense and boxing out was slack at the end, but by then it was too late to matter. Much better win than yesterday.
-
Best thing about today was the play of Cash (13 points/5 rebounds) and Olson (10 points/9 rebounds.) Walker is a good player, but she is also a foul magnet. The reserve big people must be effective once we get into conference play. We took a big step in that direction today.
-
6-0 ladies!!!! Keep it coming.
-
The new RPI issued yesterday has the women at 42 in the country and two other Horizon teams in the top 50 (Green Bay and Wright St.). I don't put a lot of stock in it at this point in the season and think that beating the top teams in the conference will be tough, but it's a sign of how much progress has been made.
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-rpi
-
Women beat Oberlin 92-43. What we would expect from a good D-I team playing a D-III school. Everyone played. Everyone scored. Bench accounted for 51 points. The women stayed focused on implementing their game on both sides of the ball. Even the bench did this. Very aggressive when opportunities opened up. My only complaint was some poor inside shooting, especially by Walker in 1H. This is turning into a pattern and I really hope Barnes addresses this before the conference begins. The stats do not give enough credit to how Benjamin held things together until the team found itself and how the team clicks when she is on the court. The last few games this team has run some gorgeous fast breaks.
-
Just keep on rollin' ladies!
-
Tonight's game against Canisus will be a good test for WBB. Although Canisus is 4-3, they've won their last four by hefty margins, as if the team has gotten its act together. They're playing lower tier competition like YSU has been. This test may be comparable to the test provided by Bucknell. Go Penguins.
-
80-48 win on the road! Wow awesome job ladies!
-
This coach is worth every dime we can scrape up
-
I thought this would be a test. I was wrong. They were ready. 3 pt. shots 12-20. 28 assists. This was about the time last year that this team started to take off.
-
This is great and we should be very proud of these women. But we must also keep things in perspective, just as Barnes does. We simply haven't played anybody yet. Fortunately, we get to play at Pittsburgh and home against Akron before conference play starts. Then we must open conference play at UIC and at Green Bay, two of the three toughest road games in the conference. Again, this team is ridiculously young and there will be tough stretches ahead. I just state these things because I don't want to see anybody turning on this team if troubles develop.
-
I think that most understand that we are young and will not go undefeated. Most also know that next years class, on paper, looks promising.
Let the excitement grow, enjoy the moment
-
Best part about this is that the freshman are getting good experience early and hopefully will be ready to go for conference play!
-
Nice to team off to undefeated start. YSU is 49th in RPI, but SOS is 244. Only played 1 team in the top 100, that being Bucknell(RPI 70). Only 1 opponent with RPI of 101-200(Nicholls State 105)... then 5 D1 teams with RPI's of 201+, and 1 non D1 opponents. Canisius entered the game 4-3, but they have an RPI of 251 and SOS of 283. Not sure why they would have been considered a test for a YSU team with RPI of 49?
RMU could provide a test, as game is on the road. RMU is only 2-5, but they have played all D1 teams... Their SOS is 114 and RPI is 152... they have played @Iowa(8-2.. RPI 15), @Illinois(8-3..RPI 34), @Xavier(6-3... RPI 133) and @Hofstra(6-3..RPI 127)... RMU has played only ONE home game, a 75-61 loss to LaSalle(6-2..RPI 158)... Still a game I expect YSU to win.
First true tests will come when playing at PITT(5-3..RPI 55) and then Akron(7-0, all wins over D1 teams and RPI of 69)..... Akron is ranked 15th in the most recent Women's Mid Major Top 25. ..... YSU is 26th with 39 votes...Green Bay is 2nd... Wright State is 16th
http://www.collegeinsider.com/womens-mid-major-top-25.php
Green Bay looks to once again be the best of the HL..... UIC, CSU, WSU and YSU likely form the next group... Valpo and Detroit could be teams to watch, as both have losing records, but have played multiple teams in the Top 100
GB 8-2... RPI 6th... SOS 11th....Has played ALL D1 teams, including UCONN, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Purdue, and South Dakota State, all of which are in top 60 RPI.... also played and beat Duquesne(RPI 85)... losses are to UCONN and 68-64 at Vanderbilt(RPI 33)
UIC 5-1 against D1 teams... RPI 94...SOS is only 258
CSU 4-3 against D1 teams... RPI 97...SOS 123...always well coached and team that tends to improve as season continues...Have beaten Toledo(RPI 43) and East Carolina(RPI 65)
WSU 4-2... all games against D1 teams... RPI 196 .... SOS only 296...Best win is over SIU(RPI 89)....lost 79-76 to Dayton(RPI 31)
Detroit could be team to watch.... record is 3-5, but only 1-5 against D1 teams... SOS is 99th...
Valpo is only 3-7, but have played all D1 teams... some quality opponents... @ Indiana(8-1..RPI 90), at Akron, Louisville(8-1...RPI 27), @ South Dakota(7-2.. RPI 92), Illinois(8-3.. RPI 34)
Side note.... The HC at Akron is Jodi Kest. in her 9th season. She was the leading candidate for the YSU job back in 2003, then decided to withdraw her name and remain at UT-Pan American.... Akron made the NCAA Tournament in 2014, and WNIT in 2013 and won 23 games each of the past 2 years.... Took her awhile to get things turned around at Akron, as she inherited a program that had won only 24 games in the previous 6 seasons... Now Akron is one of the top Mid-Major women's programs in the country...
-
Canisius entered the game 4-3, but they have an RPI of 251 and SOS of 283. Not sure why they would have been considered a test for a YSU team with RPI of 49?
Canisus won its previous four games by double digit margins. Looked like they had turned things around after a bad start. The RPIs are fun right now, but they don't mean anything. Same RPI system has South Carolina at No. 9 and Stanford at No. 26 this week. Middle Tenn. St. is 14th. YSU made them look like a D-II school.
-
And I will add that I was obviously wrong about Canisus being ready for yesterday's game. I'm not going to take anything away from our women, though.
-
Spider I might be wrong, but think we beat Tenn State not Mid Tenn State??
GOOOOO GUINS!!!!
-
Yes, you are right about playing Tenn. St. I was using MTSU as an example of why the RPI isn't a reliable indicator at this point in the season and justifying why I ignored it after I saw that Canisus had four straight, solid wins. Sometimes it takes a team a while to get its act together, like last year's women's team. I expected the women to be challenged more last night. Either I missed how poor Canisus was, the women's team used the week well to improve itself, or both.
By the way, in today's RPI, MTSU is #12 with a 4-3 record. Green Bay is #6--Green Bay is playing extremely well right now, but not yet worthy of #6. YSU has actually fallen some.
-
How did I take anything away from YSU? To me, yesterday was a game YSU should have won, and they did win. RPI's do matter, though not as much as later in the year. Strength of Schedule is important.
Canisius had won 4 in a row entering yesterdays game. Here were the wins(records are for D1 games only):
@ St. Francis(PA)... 0-7
Manhattan... 1-7
Saint Peters... 0-7
Binghamton... 1-9
Combined record: 2-30
How are those 4 solid wins? Manhattan beat Holy Cross(2-8) for their only win. Binghamton beat Delaware State(0-9) for their only win.
Canisius beat 4 very bad teams, then lost to YSU, a team that may well be in the next Mid Major Top 25 rankings, as YSU was 26th in last weeks poll. I'm not sure why anyone would have felt Canisius would be a challenge for YSU, provided YSU did not take Canisius lightly?
RMU could pose a challenge, and the first 2 games in which YSU will be playing teams as good or better than YSU will be at PITT and then Akron. That is a compliment to YSU. It's not taking anything away from YSU to say yesterday was a game in which YSU was clearly the better team entering the game, and then proved it in the game.
AS far as MTSU, they are 4-3, and have played the strongest schedule to date in D1. Their wins are @ Miami(FL) 8-2, @ Ole Miss(7-3), Clemson(5-5) and Xavier(139).... Losses are @ Arizona State(7-1), Arkansas(8-2) and @Kentucky(9-1)..... 3 games vs SEC teams.... 2 games vs ACC teams, 1 game vs Pac 12 and 1 game vs Big East. Not sure if MTSU is 14th best team in D1, but that is a difficult schedule to start the season.
GB is 8-2, and has played ALL D1 teams: UCONN(6-1), Arizona State(7-1), and Georgia Tech(6-4) at neutral sites.... @Vanderbilt(7-2), @Purdue(4-4), @South Dakota State(6-3), @Marquette(2-6), WMU(3-3), Wisconsin(3-6), Duquesne(6-4), ... losses are to UCONN and 68-64 at Vanderbilt
-
Just enjoy the ride
-
Just enjoy the ride
Amen. Come along way since a winless season!
-
How did I take anything away from YSU?
Calm down, Lets Talk. We're all on the same side here. I just explained why I thought it should have been a better game, that's all. You disagree with me. That's fine. No big deal. That's the fun of a discussion board. Not sure why you are so defensive about this. I happen to be a big fan of our women's program.
-
Spiderlegs,
Not defensive. Sorry if it came across that way. Just took the earlier post you made as me somehow trying to take something away from how the team has started the season. They have not played a great schedule to date, but they are undefeated. YSU has had several teams in the past 13-14 seasons that would be 3-4, 2-5 even 1-6 in the 7 games to date against D1 opponents. And, anything 4-3 or better would be deemed "great starts". It is a tribute to Boldon, Barnes and all of the players recruited by Martin who stuck around and helped turn a program that had No winning seasons from 00-01 through 11-12, rebuild to once again being among the top mid major programs in the country. And, it was just 09-10, when YSU went 0-30.
The program sure has come a long way, and I think it is important that the players who endured that 09-10 season, but stayed get credit for helping the program get to where it is today. Not that you have said anything to slight those players. Just not sure if people realize that the 10-11 and 11-12 teams started the turn around, even though it did not result in winning records in either season.
-
We're good. If anything, I could be accused of being overly optimistic about this team's potential over the next few years.
-
Interested to see how tonight's game goes. Good luck ladies!
-
Ladies had an uncharacteristically bad game, but came back strong to tie and send it to OT. GO LADY PENS!!!!
-
Down 15 in the 2nd half, only had 31 points with 12 minutes left in the game and end up winning 73-65!! Way to go ladies!!!
-
Down 15 in the 2nd half, only had 31 points with 12 minutes left in the game and end up winning 73-65!! Way to go ladies!!!
Never led until OT! Didn't give up after a sloppy beginning.
-
Watching the first four minutes was like a bad flashback to the days of Hill-Martin. Allowed wide open threes, dribbled the ball off a foot twice, missed wide open shots. Rest of the first half was only marginally better. Scored only 20 points and allowed Robert Morris to hit 7-15 from behind the arc, many by wide open shooters.
For the first time, the players got nervous and forced too many shots. At the 9:22 mark of the second half it looked really grim when we fell behind by 15. Then it happened. Everything started to click. We ran our offensive plays, hit our shots, got to the line often (how does 33-35 sound), and got Robert Morris in serious foul trouble. The defense reverted to its usual dependable self. Really impressed that these women could "find it" when it would have been so easy to just quit on a night when nothing went right for about 31 minutes.
-
I was watching the game via the ESPN video and with 4-5 minutes to go, I turned it off because it looked like a certain loss. I checked the final scores this morning and couldn't believe the YSU ladies came back and tied the game, then won it in overtime. What a come back!!!
The girls shot 33-35 at the foul line, that's incredible! They need to teach the YSU men's team how to shot foul shots.
Great comeback and keep playing hard and never give up!
-
Need to blow out Ohio Valley and get the starters some rest for the big games coming up with Pitt and Akron!
-
Nice to see a game like this, obviously a good test, away game, decent team, down most of the game and able to keep it together and win. Congrats ladies.
-
Easy 84-33 win today over Ohio Valley. No starter played more than 14 minutes. Rest up, because 2 big games coming up against Pitt and Akron!
-
Tough test today against a good Pitt team! Let's see how we measure up. Go Guins!
-
I see the Sports Info Staff at YSU is on top of their press releases again.. They have the Ohio Valley logo rather than the Pitt logo on todays release. Keep up the good work......
-
I wish we were competitive today, but it was not to be. Akron has now become somewhat of a must-win for us.
-
Big reality check today.
-
Three games in a row with bad shooting, especially poor three-point shooting. Walker starting to emerge as a real force. Hope the team gets back on track after the holiday.
-
Most of our 8 wins have come against low major programs. Now we were blown out on the road by a high major program. Neither of these extremes means much. We simply do not yet know how this team will stack up against the competition in the Horizon League. On paper, second through fourth places should be filled by some combination of UIC, Wright State, and us. Both UIC and Wright State were also blown out by power conference foes this weekend. Nobody will touch Green Bay who has already defeated many high major teams this season.
Try to keep things in perspective. Of the seven players that Barnes uses every game, three are freshmen and two are sophomores. When he extends the rotation to nine, add a junior and yet another freshman. It will be very hard to excel in a tough mid-major league with that kind of inexperience. I say tough because in RPI rankings from last week the Horizon league was #10. For comparison, the MAC was #20.

I wish we were competitive today, but it was not to be. Akron has now become somewhat of a must-win for us.
I'm not convinced that this is a must-win situation. This game is the 2nd of a series of 7 games that is the hardest stretch of the schedule, which includes the four top teams in the conference back to back. If a young team like this wins only 2 or 3 of those, I'd say that they'd be doing well. They could lose all 7 and still end up with a very decent season.
-
Big game tonight! Interested to see how we match up with the Lady Zips.
-
Tough loss tonight against a good Cornell team... Time to regroup and get ready for conference play!
-
UIC will not go away. They have two girls in foul trouble that have to sit, so we are up to a 7-point lead after a 12-2 run. They kill us on the boards. UIC could not shoot for their lives, but they are getting 2 and three chances as we cannot get a rebound. They have a 21-6 advantage right now. 64-57 good gals with 3:11 left in the game.
-
Good win tonight for the ladies! Big test ahead at GB on Saturday...
-
On paper this was a bad matchup. UIC pressure all over the court vs. our freshmen guards. We made plenty of mistakes early but then regained our composure and took control of the contest in the second half. Well done ladies. We can now go into Green Bay and play relaxed with no pressure. Splitting these games (at worse) sets us up for a very good conference season (and beyond in some type of tournament.)
So glad that I stayed home tonight and watched the good university team on the computer.
-
Winning on the road is hard. I agree with Wick250 about the match-up. Winning this game after trailing in the 2nd half and coming of the loss to Cornell says alot about the team and coaching staff. This is the 2nd time in 2-3 weeks that YSU has bounced back with a win after a loss, and both were against solid teams.
Way to go Penguins!!!!!
-
Coach Barnes has the Lady Guins playing hard and never giving up. Their 3 point shooting has been very good and their foul shooting is fantastic. They are exciting to watch!!
On the other hand the Men's team lacks tenacity and are not exciting! In fact I quit watching them.
Keep it up Lady Guins.
-
Some of the sting of the loss to Pitt is wearing off. Pitt just beat No. 8 UNC 84-59 and Pitt's previous game was a 6-pt. loss to #7 Louisville.
-
Worth noting this is going to be one of the biggest games in WBB this weekend.
#35 RPI YSU @ #8 RPI UWGB. We beat them twice last year by 9 points a piece I believe. This would be a huge win for us if we want a shot at an at-large for the NCAA tourney, which is not out of the question if we can keep our RPI in the 30-40s.
-
Yes it is really the loss to Cornell that hurt. The gals are going to have to steal one that they are not expected to win. UWGB sounds just about right. Go Guins!!
-
Will be interesting to see how Benjamin and Arbanas react to what they see from GB. Those two really stepped up in the 2nd half against UIC.
Barnes' bunch could turn into something amazing. Strong people at every position and no let up when the subs come in. Not many teams have this. Only YSU's inexperience is holding them back.
-
Ouch. Looking forward for the comeback after the Green Bay loss.
-
Disappointing but not unexpected. We are not going to displace Green Bay at the top of this league while all those freshmen are roaming over the court. Green Bay has defeated Purdue, Arizona State, Georgia Tech by 21 points, Wisconsin by 10, and Duquesne by 32. For the sake of comparison, Duquesne beat Pittsburgh by 10.
We will be fine. We gained an advantage for second place with the win in Chicago. We have one really hard road game left (although of course all road games are difficult.) Wright State and UIC have three. We just need to shake this off and prepare for Cleveland State in five days. CSU can score but plays little defense. That will be a refreshing change after this road trip.
-
Went 1-1 on the road against 2 real good teams, I will sleep well tonight.
-
Green Bay is a top 25 team in the nation. Not worried about how badly we struggled considering we start 2 freshman and a sophomore. Splitting on the trip was key, come back home and get recharged!
-
You guys are taking it too lightly. We shot 22.9%, that is a terrible and unacceptable performance. UWGB had a 36-8 points advantage in the paint. Just like UIC getting 2 & 3 shots every time that had a possession. We get pushed around. The men are as young as the women and you seem to offer no mercy there.
-
Let's see if I have this right. 8) The conference season begins for both the men and the women. So far the men blow an 18 point lead to a pathetic UIC team on the road and then embarrass themselves by blowing a double digit lead at home to a mediocre Wright State team. The women start on the road against UIC, a team with vastly superior athletic skills and a 14 game home court winning streak. Then they must go to Green Bay, an experienced team with superior playing skills and a team that has lost only a handful of games on their home floor in the last decade. Yet somehow the women manage to come home 1-1. Yep, does seem that both teams are performing at the same level. :o
-
As of today. RPI: YSU WBB=40; YSU MBB=239. Massey: YSU WBB, 82; YSU MBB, 255. Yes, women and men are clearly at the same level. ;)
We'll have a better sense of the state of the women's team after the next two games. However, they're 2-3 so far in the series of 7 games that's the hardest part of the season. The freshmen will definitely tire as the season goes along--not yet sure how to take this into account but I expect that this will affect the outcome of games near the end of the season.
-
Sorry but losses to Cornell and UWGB were just as bad. UIC came back on us twice when their two top players came back in the game (foul trouble). So we really were not holding our own. I can see not pulling away, but we should at least be able to maintain our advantage. We had no inside game.
Don't think I am trashing the lady pens or guins ..I am just a little upset because I thought we were a little better than I am seeing ...on both teams.

You want the girls to go undefeated??? Relax. Like I said, Green Bay is one of the top 25 teams in the nation. Look at some of the teams they have beaten/played, unreal. Our lady guins will be just fine!!
-
HUGE game tonight vs Wright State who is a very good team! Would like to see good support from the community tonight. GO LADIES!
-
GO PENGUINS!!!!! ... Keep the unbeaten record at home going!!!!
-
HUGE game cuz:
--WSU knocked YSU out of the 2014 HL tournament and prevented us from advancing to the title game broadcast on ESPNU.
--Want to enter the 2015 WBB tournament as the 2 or 3 seed so as not to face UWGB before the final game.
and...
-- Need to win these home games now in case they "Wolford" the last four games. Regular season concludes with 3/4 games on the road (w/ that only home game being UWGB).
-
75-70 WIN! Great job ladies. Benjamin with a career high 22 points.
-
That was a terrific second half. Wow!
-
Way to Go!!! Jumped up to second place!
Was rooting for CSU who played a good second half versus UWGB but fell short.
-
HUGE WIN LADY PENGUINS!!
Great hustle: plus Heidi and Benjamin were everywhere in the 2nd half. Keep up the great job, you're an exciting team to watch.
-
The women worked hard for this one. Wright St. was clearly more athletic than YSU and had excellent ball movement. YSU didn't set up the offense well in the first half but settled down in the second and played its game. A real team win. The big seven-game stretch ends at 4-3 and sole possession of second place. Hard to argue with that.
-
I love these girls!! Keep it up.. makes me hope round ball is relevant at YSU 8)
-
RPI is 28!
-
Tough test today at Oakland where the ladies haven't won since 2000! Coming off a physical game against Wright St, and only 1 days rest...
-
Women lost a close game. They got outhustled when it mattered and more missed FTs than normal, which is usually a sign that they are tired. However, Oakland has put together some good moments since the middle of December, so I don't want to take anything away from them.
-
Yep, knew it was gonna be tough after the Wright St win... Oh well, regroup and get back to work!
-
I went - it was ugly - I came home , nuff said!
-
Ugly loss.... Yikes.
-
This team better find itself, they just blew a huge lead to the second-worst team in the conference. Oh well ...too many young players?
-
Youth may have been a problem with the defense, which collapsed in the second half, but overall I wouldn't say it was youth. Nobody but Schlegel was even trying to rebound--the offense deployed that shot-and-run from the Bolden area. Walker looked like she wasn't there at times.
-
Nice bounce back game from the ladies!
-
I guess the question now is whether 20 wins is possible. Nine games left with a 15-5 record. I would have thought so until losses to Oakland and Detroit. I see 18-19 wins a definite possibility, but 20 will require some consistency game after game, which will be hard for a young team.
-
yes I thought that 20 wins gives us the NIT ...unless we win the tourney of course.
-
HUGE game at WSU tomorrow at noon. A win gives us a tie for second. A loss puts us in the middle of the pack as there is lots of parity....all but two teams have between 3-5 HL wins.
Need the #2 or #3 seed going into the HL tournament so that we don't face UWGB until the HL championship.
Good news is we still have 2 games ahead versus 0-7 Valpo, and after tomorrow, all but two games are versus teams with 3 HL wins or less.
-
Unfortunately, the women's team is regressing. A lot of their recent mistakes were some of the same mistakes they were making when they were winning, but IMO three things have changed:
(1) This team not longer can break a press. In the first half of the season, they were bringing up as many as four players and the player in the center near the midcourt line (usually Schlegel) often ended up with the ball. Now it seems that the responsibility falls on Benjamin and one other person, which has resulted in too many errant passes and steals.
(2) Getting the ball to the post is no longer a priority. Instead, there's a lot of passing on the outside, and too much dribbling around with no real purpose. Need to get back to attacking the basket as they did earlier in the season.
(3) Walker seems to be checking out of the game in the second half. She did that last year, but early this season she seem engaged most of the time. Today she had no defensive rebounds in the second half. UIC had 19 offensive rebounds today--you can't win a close game conceding that much.
Barnes has a big challenge on his hands, and this is quite a test of his leadership. I hope he gets control of his team--still possible to have an outstanding season. They don't need to fix much to get back on track.
-
The women beat Detroit today for their second win in a row. Now at 17 wins. I saw good and bad. They are breaking the press again, and there was some serious boxing out on defensive rebounds. Unfortunately, they nearly blew a 17-point lead. A few glitches that could have tanked the game against a more talented team: (1) Long stretch in the middle of the second half where they didn't get the ball inside, and at times, it looked like they weren't trying. (2) Surprisingly, when they broke the press, there was suddenly massive confusion on the offense, like they didn't know what to do with the ball. Set up some bad situations that nearly cost the game. (3) Defense also a bit confused when the game was on the line. Detroit had three treys in the last 2-1/2 minutes.
Some clutch plays by Benjamin in the last 5-6 minutes. Schlegel was as dependable as ever.
Twenty wins definitely in the cards, especially if they get a bit more disciplined and win the next two on the road against Milwaukee and Valpo.
-
Solid W. Gotta finish strong for the end of the season!
-
The CSU game looks to be the battle for the third seed.
-
Nice win for the ladies tonight!! Heidi with 38!!
-
Taking care of business. Real shot at 20+ wins.
-
Schlegel w/ 19 first half points......after scoring 38 v. UWM. Girl is in the zone.
-
The Penguins win at Valpo 87-69. Heidi has another 38 pt game. Newman with 19 to add a little spark in the 2nd half.
-
Yep nice victory! One more to 20 ladies!
-
2nd fewest points in history..... Yikes. Horrible game
-
2nd fewest points in history..... Yikes. Horrible game
UWGB is in a different universe than the rest of the HL. They also just crushed UIC.
I am still confident of a win against CSU (who just lost to UWM) and a third seed, a rematch with UWGB in the HL championship, and a 20 win season with a another WNIT invite.
-
I don't know Nation. It just shows us how far we have to go
-

I like Barnes, but I do think what Bolden did will never be matched. He took a winless team, and after a few years went to the WNIT....and won. He prolly won't be at OU very long until he moves up again.
-
Women blew another lead and lost to Cleveland State tonight. Shot only 54% from FT line and gave up 17 second-chance points. The team showed so much promise early in the season but has gone backwards and now looks out of focus. What a shame.
-
Yeah, but it's too be expected when you have such a young team. Get the W on senior night and get to 20 wins and then make some noise in the tourney!
-
Heidi is not having a great game on the floor. Luckily they are fouling her and she is making her FT's. Ladies up by 11 at the half.
-
Good solid W. Home tourney game Wednesday against Detroit. Come out and support!
-
There was an effort to get the ball into the middle today and a couple of really nice backdoor cuts.
-
Tournament starts tonight against a good Detroit team. Hopefully the community can come out and support the ladies!
-
Yes, we split the regular season ...losing at home. We need all the fan help we can get for some revenge.
-
It looks like they already qualified for a tournament. I wonder if the WNIT is is still in play with a win over UDM.

Hard to say ...finishing tied for 3rd. In the eyes of a tourney ...that is finishing tied for 4th. In 2013, we finished second behind UWGB in regular season and split with them. We were the #2 seed in the HL tourney, winning 1 game ...this year we are the #4 seed and were virtually non-competitive against UWGB. So ...ladies you need to win it all!
GO GUINS!!!

Depends on who gets into NCAA tournament and who the autobids for WNIT are. Basically, though, the YSU RPI right now is 77, which puts them on the bubble for an at-large WNIT birth. The problem is whether the WNIT selection committee would allow them to leapfrog 3rd place Cleveland State, which in terms of record and ranking is lower than YSU.
-
I was puzzled in tonight's game against Detroit why the YSU offense frequently did not have someone setting up in the post, especially in the second half when Walker was out of the lineup. I thought the pass to the post was essential to the Barnes' offensive philosophy.
-
I thought it was well balanced solid W.... Now, time to get revenge on the UWGB!
-
As for the Tournaments, Barnes said that the team has already qualified for the WBI. Hopefully the WNIT could be in store. But let's focus on GB!
-

Well we won by 18 so let's just be happy. Defense is the essential element of Barnes coaching philosophy and they did a great job last night.
I'm very happy we have GB and not Wright State. Despite destroying us twice this year, we had our absolute worst offensive performances each time. We always have open three's vs them. It is essential we knock them down and then we have a shot.
-
Any predictions for tonight??? LETS GO LADIES!
-
2 for the last 10. UWGB is shooting poorly as well, we could have made a major dent in their lead.
-
We are into the bonus!!
-
Just wilted under pressure.... Benjamin can't be taking those kind of shots late in the game like this.... Oh well, great season ladies!!! Hoping for a WNIT bid with 21 wins this year!
-
Incredible second half. Our defense just suffocated UWGB during that comeback. Unfortunately we couldn't get over that hump, but you have to admire the poise/composure of our freshmen in that second half. Feel very confident if we get into WBI, this team can make some noise. Team grew up tonight in a big way, let's just hope they get a few more games to grow.
-
@YSUPepBandMemb: NO TRAVEL. YSU 54 GB 63. Have a great weekend and be safe. Stay tuned for post season tourney Info. We'll likely host a game Tue or Wed.
-
Interesting.....
"The last two WBI championships were won by Horizon League schools as Detroit won in 2013, while UIC earned the tournament title last season."
http://www.womensbasketballinvitational.com/news/2014-15/releases/WBI_2015_Dates
-
Let's make it 3 in a row!
-
Also interesting....
Last season, UIC was seeded fourth in the HL tournament, and lost in the HL Final Four (sound familiar?)....and went on to win the WBI.

Seeing how we played in our non-conference against some very formidable competition, I do believe we can make some noise in a 16 team tournament such as the WBI.
As an aside, YSU is hosting the PIAA State Semi's Tuesday Night as Farrell and Kennedy Catholic meet for the 4th time on the year. They sold out this game the 3 previous times in smaller venues, but the fact it is a PA state semi and will be highly publicized across the region, I think this game may end up having a larger crowd than any YSU mens or womens game this year!

LeBron James played in the last HS game held at YSU......in 2002....

I hope admissions is there recruiting.

Weird that PA would be playing this game in OH but I'll take it! Great recruiting tool.

Getting off topic but, way back when, Wilmington played Sharon in FB at YSU to handle the crowd.
When should we learn if the women will be playing again?
-
The WBI teams will be released after the NCAA selection show at 7 pm Monday night.
-
Would have liked to see the women make it to the NIT :(

WNIT field to be announced late tonight. I guess YSU has a shot as an at large...but doubt it

You doubt wrong:
@YSUsports: .@YSUWomensHoops has earned an at-large bid to the #WNIT!!! Date, opponent and location will be announced tonight. http://t.co/Z3I3hIsaiY
-
Wright St also in (we all knew that) and Cleveland State, too.
-
Some big schools in here.... Ole Miss, Mizzou, NC State, Michigan, St. John's, Virginia.... Also a lot of MAC teams. Interested to see who we play.

Great !! I'm glad to be wrong!
-
Wright State and Cleveland State are also in. Congrats to the Lady guins! Good luck in the tourney. Now if we can just have a new coach for the Men,
-
Home Game Thursday night against Duquesne GO GUINS!!!
-
YSU ladies will be HOSTING Duquesne Thursday, the 19th. Play the winner of Stetson vs Richmond.
-
Duquesne features 3 girls at least 6-3 or taller. They beat Kent by 26 and beat Pitt by 10. Lost to GB by 32... Should be a solid matchup!
-
Be nice to have a big crowd to support these ladies!!! Not sure though with March Madness going on tonight.... Good luck ladies!
-
That's just a play-in game folks. Let's get out there and support the Lady Pens!!!
-
Tough loss....Great season tho ladies! Future is very bright!
-
We lost to a better team, their defense was tough, not too many uncontested shots by us. 20 plus wins, hosted a first round WNIT game, a good year and better to come.
-
I am a little disappointed by how badly we were beaten, but you are right ...sign of good things to come.
-
Great season for the ladies! Success breeds success. Keep it going.
