Title: BB Recruiting
Post by: ytownchief22 on March 17, 2018, 01:54:03 PM
Donel Cathcart has committed. Played 2 years at Niagra CC. 6-5 wing. Averaged 21 and 9 this year. Adds him to guards Quisenberry, Taylor and another wing in Simmons. Pretty nice class with one more possible addition coming.

21 ppg  8.5 rb
45% fg  81 % ft  37% 3pt fg

Smokey video highlights showed he has deep range and based on the attendance at his games he'll love YSU ;D ;D

Top 5 in the Horizon?  Frankly that is a more damning statement against the Horizon than a plus for YSU.
We went down for the women's bb game against Binghamton.  Played great first half, got enamored with 3's in the second half, they made theirs, we missed ours, end of story.
But in addition to the game, I sent about 15 minutes walking around Beeghly looking with "fresh" eyes.  Beeghly is not a dump.  It does need several upgrades, and some of the construction details would be hard to explain today, but it is not a "dump."

seniors :(3)  Devin Haygood, Tyree Robinson,Noe Anibar.
Juniors :(4) Jeremiah Ferguson,Braun Hartfield,Donel Cathcart,Devin Morgan.
Sophomores:(4) Jacob Brown,Naz Bohannon,Garrett Covington,Michael Akuchie.  (Brown may have redshirted ?)
Freshmen : (3)  Atiba Taylor, Darius Quisenberry,Jelani Simmons.

2018-19 season shows 14 scholarships and I thought 13 was the limit.  Also Francisco Santiago if given another year would put YSU at 15.

Not sure how we add a big to this class which in my opinion is a major issue.

YSU should get a Nun as a consultant/fan then maybe we would have a season with more than 10 wins. It works for Loyola of Chicago.

I don't think Sally Field is doing anything?
Frankly if we need a lead female fan, I think Coach Calhoun should hire that cute little blond from Binghamton as an assistant coach.  If it is good enough for Gregg Popovich and the Spurs, it should be good enough for YSU

I thought exactly the same thing 1/2 way through football recruiting last year.  IMO we can safely assume a few things:
1, Coach Calhoun (or at least one of his staff) can count to 13.
2, JC can certainly recognize the need for some size inside.
3., Coach knows more about what is going on with his team and players than we do.
This will all work out.

Olamide Pedersen, a 6-8 forward from Sunrise Christian Academy. He was born in Denmark so another overseas guy like Anabir.

Can't tell anything from Olamide Pedersen's highlights as he is about 8" taller than any other player on the floor.  3 block video was against guys no taller than me!

Title: Re: BB Recruiting
Post by: ucfpengbuck on March 22, 2018, 02:43:33 PM
Jacob Brown was a down the road project.  Liked his upside but D2 might be his best option.
Jeremiah Ferguson is a back up at YSU and one of if not both freshmen will get his minutes.  Tough player wish him well.
Braun Hartfield is a surprise. Up and down sophomore year.  Garrett Covington and JC transfer Donnel Cathcart should fill those minutes and maybe the freshmen Simmons can get some pt there.

2 of 3 Slocum players moving on.

Yes he is.  Can't minimize losing the top returning scorer.   Optimistic at that position YSU can have enough bodies and potential to fill the void.   Hopefully we'll upgrade the roster with this and future recruiting classes.

Post by: ytownchief22 on March 22, 2018, 03:57:56 PM
Hartfield can play but he wasn't a fit for Calhoun's system. Coach is getting his own players for this up and down high tempo style. We'll see.

I had a feeling Ferguson would transfer.  I really liked him and thought maybe he fit Calhoun's system, but I think he seemed discouraged with his playing time just looking at his expressions and body language at times.

Hartfield is shocking, but I think he just doesn't fit the system.  He really struggled down the stretch after putting up a lot of points early in the season.  May have been tired.

Both Ferguson and Hartfield seemed like really good guys.  Hate to see them go but I think both may flourish elsewhere.

Brown really didn't get any playing time in league play, and like someone else said he may be more of a division II player.

Title: Re: BB Recruiting
Post by: Double ET on March 24, 2018, 07:09:40 PM
I thought Hartfield and Ferguson could be good players in the last couple of years. We will miss them.
Robinson was inconsistent and lack of energy to play any significant minutes. I was not high on Haygood who had no short jump shots; could not finish around the basket and could not make FT.
Coach might need room for scholarships for JC transfers.
Former Horizon league teams (Butler and Loyola) both did well in the big dance. Right now, Loyola is leading K-state by 12 in the first half.
The league is not what it used to be. Hopefully, we could make a run for it in the next couple of years.
Title: Re: BB Recruiting
Post by: YSU1 on March 24, 2018, 08:36:23 PM
The Ramblers roll on.  It is upsetting that YSU has been satisfied with a below average basketball program. They waited too long with the prior coach.  Losing is a way of life and it will take a lot to change the culture.  Nevada and Loyola have gotten some transfers to help them.  We just have players who leave.

It's a process but comments stated above, Butler and Loyola do not focus on football so they are mainly basketball schools only, hence why they have a lot of success. Football will always be 1st at YSU because of JT and the history. But I trust in Calhoun's plan. Haygood was decent at best. Robinson was home sick and just didn't give enough when he was on the court. The recruits coming in fit his style of play more.

Remember Calhoun inherited one of the worst programs in division one. Especially when it comes to winning ways and losing culture. He had to put a patchwork recruiting class in when he arrived. This is going to take a few years I bet some of these players transferring were told to leave and scholarships not renewed. He has a good class coming in with all state players and a division 1 transfer that can score. Covington and Bohannon were very good freshman. I wouldn't be surprised he brings some major transfers in that can help us immediately.

Yes. Like I said earlier in the season when people were disappointed with all the losses, it's a big process to turn this program around and completely change the culture which was stale and stagnant. 2-3 years minimum. We have our PG's of the future coming in next year which will help big time.

After watching a vid of Otchere it would be amazing if we brought this kid in. His ability to show on the perimeter and yet recover to the post defensively is amazing for a 6"10 kid. Who cares if he can score or not. If the program hits on at least 3 of these recruits , look out in 2 years

Yes he was at Charleston Southern for 2 years and one year at Central Florida college which is a community college in Ocala Fl and not to be confused with UCF in Orlando.   He did red shirt his 1st year at Charleston Southern.   He has 2 years left at YSU.  Hopefully he can block some shots or intimidate in the post but his video showed him jacking up 3s.

It's interesting that Cameron wants to go from the leading scorer on a successful d3 program to YSU where pg position is very crowded.

Santiago if healthy has a few years of D1 ball and will play.
Devin Morgan also has 2 years of D1 and will probably start in the back court.
Darius Quisenberry was arguably the top point guard in Ohio and he should see quality back up minutes.
Antiba Taylor is another point guard who can play the point or off guard and will see the floor a lot.

Glad to see Mr Johnson at YSU and if he gets minutes then we will know that he earned them through hard work .  I hope he has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove everyone that he is a legit D1 guard that just needed a shot.

Or if back, will he be like Nickki Arbanas, and only be a shadow of his former self?  She did what I believe is best for her, give up BB and concentrate on school, and while that has nothing to do with Francisco's injury situation, I do hope he makes the choice that is best for him also.

I do not think a D1 basketball school (men or women) can split scholarships, so I think he had a full scholarship.

Football at FCS and most if not all other sports can split scholarships to a certain degree.  I think in football the 63 scholarships can be split among 85 players to reach the FBS level.  In FBS I don't think they can split football scholarships, all are full scholarships.

You are correct in that they do not have equivalents in non-FCS sports, but they do not have any dollar associations either. So he may only receive Academics assistance (say a player chooses to live locally), but it would count as a full scholarship. In FCS football that would only count as a partial scholarahip and we can award someone else the Room & Board assistance. Many of the MAC schools still do not offer 85 full ride scholarships. If the money is not there, then it is not there.
