YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU vs Illinois

No, Ricky has not carried a board and it was Garry and Wells with the headsets Saturday signaling in the plays. Ricky did have WR gloves on throughout the game.

Relax. See my earlier comments about the QB situation. They will be 3-1 over the first 4 games as the weenie contests kick in.  Davis should see time and probably   become the starter . Coaches don't want to burn the red shirt year of Wells  and if you think its bad now at QB, let me clue you-- it gets a whole lot worse with a true Frosh at QB who has no experience, limited skills ( been telling you that) and would "wilt" under fire. Fumbles, INTs and not made to take hits.

Next 3 games the QB are going to look "better".  ;D
Just an FYI...Ricky was moved to 3rd string the 2nd day of camp, August 2nd, where he remains. He receives no reps in practice and hasn't since the 2nd scrimmage (and those were with the 3rd string). So if he is called on, will he be up to speed? He has since ask to play special teams to help the team and was told no. He has been jumping in with the WR's, a position he has never played, and has looked pretty good. He will do whatever is ask of him. He loves his teammates, coaches, and his school.

Nobody knows what happened or why but Hunter Wells is your next guy. It looks like that was the plan all along. As far as Ricky being inconsistent in practice, he has some work to do, but you have to remember, he ran the scout team last year, he never ran YSU's offense until spring ball and did a good job then. If you look at the 2nd scrimmage film this year, he was graded on only 6 plays while working with the 3rd string and nobody knew where to go or what to do. Of the 6 plays, every ball he did throw had to be thrown away because of a bad route or they were covered. As far as Hunters completions, all but 2 were behind the line of scrimmage (screens and dump passes) and his incompleted deep throws max out at 45 yards with no accuracy, so how he gives us the best chance to throw the ball this year is beyond me, but i would like to see it.

Regardless, love YSU Football and wish them the very best this year.

That sounds cool. I think the players would love that idea. :)

I hope Wolford does not complain again when we are selected in the second division during media day.  Look at this objectively.  How would you rate a team that had the worst defense in the league and also lost a record-setting quarterback?
Sorry if this is a dumb question (after all i am just a Rock Hopper) but when is Media day?

Is there any good things about this years team that we can talk about? It can't all be bad can it?  :)

I understand there is a TV program on YSU football hosted by coach Wolford and Dana this Tuesday.
If you don't mind me asking, who is Dana?

I was at the scrimmage today and I thought the defense looked very much improved over last year. There were many stops by the D that I don't think they would of made last year.

You can nevet have enough lineman.

I agree. Here is a look at the Qb's running the 40 in practice today. Ricky and Dante in front with Garry and Wargo at the top of the screen. https://twitter.com/YSURickyDavis/status/436906623240769536

Yeah, as I said we are very pleased and so is Ricky. How did UMass finish this past year, I didn't follow them?

Paladin, I appreciate your honesty and I hope you are pleasantly surprised after seeing more of Ricky. He loves Youngstown State and his teammates.

I would like to give you some background on Ricky if that's ok. Ricky had 3 D1 offers before he transferred from Moeller. He got his offer to Bowling Green his sophomore year which was too early to commit. Akron and Kent State offered during his Junior year while at Moeller. Tennessee had him come down twice, which was pretty cool, but that didn't work out. Toledo kept telling him his entire Senior year not to commit anywhere, that they were going to offer, but when things got tight and kids started jumping as their schools got other commits, Toledo got who they really wanted and Ricky was out there also. Youngstown offered and we took the trip and he loved it. After he committed to YSU, UMass came in and offered him. He wouldn't change his commitment because he gave his word. UMass actually sent a NLI on signing day (which I still have), hoping he would change his mind. He is very happy where he is, as are his parents. Everything happens for a reason.

The only thing you said that I will argue with you about is arm strength. He has always had a strong arm. If you know anyone on the team, ask them about Thursday's 7 on 7 practice in the Watts. During a little competition in front of the whole team he threw the ball 76 yards in the air. I have seen him throw it 70 yards (HS ball) myself. I'm telling you all this stuff hoping you will give him a chance, he is a good kid. If you haven't seen his Senior year film here is the link  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs0US1amApw
And just because he didn't start at Moeller doesn't mean he didn't have a good year against top competition. Here is that link  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNaZbubHlao
Go Penguins!

The class is a mixed bag. Some good ones, some problematic and some just outright stretches. Moore, Sandidge and Washington are all solid  RBs. Costy is a solid OL. JUCO  Mosley should start on the OL . Rankin looks to be the real deal at DE. Lots of others should contribute but maybe not right away. I don't see Wells playing QB here, Jefferies is a stretch from  a H.S. TE to  a college OL ( project) and Louigene hasn't played much and is another project. Overall this class is average and not as good as some other classes Wolf brought in. No DT which the team  needs badly  ( the returning starters weren't very good last year). Grade -- C

Haven't looked yet but would bet $$$$$$$$$$$$ we won't stand up to the other teams in the MVFC recruiting classes this year. YSU has had the #1 recruit class for a couple of years but will drop with this class.

Paladin, you seem to be a straight shooter so I am going to ask you for a favor. What is your thoughts on Freshman QB Ricky Davis? He is my son and I am all the way down here in Middletown, haven't seen any practices, workouts or anything else. I need you to be my eyes. In the next few months, if you would, let me know how he is doing? I would appreciate it.

Haven't heard much talk about Ricky Davis lately. Is he red-shirting?
