As a lifetime Lordstown resident, I know I am biased, but this is what college athletics as all about! Walk-on to star! One of the great stories I read about WBB at YSU was a couple years ago when they had an astronomical GPA to go with a winning record. I don't know what is it now, but I'll bet it is high. We should a be very proud of Sarah and her teammates! Have a GREAT season, ladies!

I think they could have a pretty good squad this year but point guard is a big issue. Will miss Indiya big time.

missing Nikki too! The Arbanas injury killed last season.

Good solid win tonight!

Good solid win tonight!
ditto! especially in the senate.......................oh, you were referring to the women's 10 point "easy" overtime win. ditto that too!! (kidding of course, great job ladies!)
-
Another nice win. 2-0 on the season!
-
Ladies with a very nice 9 point win tonight @ Pitt!
Dominated most of the game. Awesome to see.
-
Very nice win for the lady penguins!!! Great 3 point shooting. Keep up the go job!
-
Great win at Pitt! All the returning players are contributing, most at a high level. Bench is short and that will hurt with most starters playing 35 minutes. The new players are going to have to grow up fast for us to continue at this level. Glad for Melinda Trimmer. She stuck with the program for 4 years and didn't play much, but is an important cog in the team this year. Need number 1, 4,and 44 to grow quickly.
-
Point guard is still an issue but off to a great start. This team seems to play better together.
-
Just signed this girl from Blackhawk!

A lot to like, but one thing not to like, she is SHORT.

Good win over a previously undefeated Akron team tonight for the ladies.
-
Ladies now 6-2!
-
7-2 now. If not for the really close loss to Yale, they'd be 8-1.
Really solid team!
-
Another win. 9-3 on the year... This is a program worth cheering for.

Could not agree more. I have always loved Lady Pens basketball. I would like to see nothing more than for YSU to become a club and fan base like Green Bay. See 3k to 5k in the seats at each game (1,200 at a minimum). Watch half of that attendance leave when the men's game starts. I think we can recruit more competitively and attract staff with the ladies, that is unless the cost of WBB continues to rise.
-
We average over 3k now in the stands. I think 3rd in the Horizon. Even though I'm not the biggest Barnes fan but he has been recruiting pretty well and it's showing.
-
Another win.
10-3
-
The real Youngstown State basketball team. They play hard for 40 minutes, and they contest every shot on defense. They have an offensive scheme, and they execute it. They have legitimate post players and quality perimeter shooters. They win at least half of their games on the road. They are accomplishing this with a short roster because of injuries to two promising freshmen. And according to Barnes, the team has attained a 3.75 grade point average for this past semester.
-
Another dominant win! 11-3 now. Come out and support Saturday!
-
12-3 on the year now.
Congrats to Alison Smolinski for breaking the all time 3's record with 210!
-
The lady penguins are an exciting team and fun to watch. Another nice victory. Way to go girls; keep up the good work.
-
At Milwaukee today the refs controlled the game early and let Milwaukee play very aggressive and not call fouls which killed our inside out game. And we had some things not go well for us and Milwaukee made some shots I didn't think they would. On to GB.
-
Yeah tough game today. Proud of how they fought back to force OT. Another tough test ahead.
-
South Beach and I took in the Kennedy Catholic girls basketball game last night. Our YSU recruit Kennedy's Junior Maila Magestro had a stellar evening. She scored 37 points tonight, with 7 assists. Magestro becomes a rare Mercer County player to surpass 300 points scoring for the season (304) in just 11 games. (27 ppg). She is well on her way to a banner year. Congratulations.
-
Outstanding win this evening. Wright State is a talented collection of streetball players, but we matched them on the boards and contained their offense until garbage time in the fourth quarter.
-
Very nice indeed. Intensity was up all night which was good to see.
-
After two difficult away games in Wisconsin the girls came back with vengeance at home with Wright St.
They hustled, found openings and keep the pressure on Wright St. Nice win, now do it again against N. Kentucky.
-
Another nice win. NKU is better than their record indicates. Props to the girls for fighting the entire game.
-
Definitely experienced a letdown today after the war against Wright State. Based upon statistics, NKU struggles to score but everything they threw up went in for three periods. According to the video board, they were shooting 57% after the third period but then finished the game at 41%. A tribute to the defense that we played, finally, in the last ten minutes.
Beat Cleveland State on Saturday and we finish the first half at 7-2. CSU is another streetball team that won't be able to do much if we keep them in a half-court game. They are also small and can't defend the post. Cash and Dunn should dominate. But let's not wait until the fourth period this time.
-
15-5 now! Dominating teams at home. Keep it going ladies!
-
16-5, 8-2 in league play. Best start to HL league play since we joined the conference. Great job ladies!
-
Now let's see some new faces in the stands Saturday 1 PM!!!
-
Next home game my family and I can attend... we will be there!
-
Another dominant win today by the ladies!
17-5!
-
Now comes the hard part. 5 of the last 7 on the road, Green Bay one of the home games, only one dog (UIC) left. Total commitment required for every minute of those games.
-
18-6 now on the year. Keep it up ladies!
-
I watched some of the game and never noticed Sarah Cash on the floor. I was thinking they were resting her. Seems like she's been gutting it out on a bad leg all season.
-
Come out and support your ladies tonight!
-
Ladies won 70-59 over GB. Good job!
-
Tough, gritty win after falling down 0-10 to start the game. Awesome job ladies!
-
Fantastic accomplishment! Great defense after the first two minutes. Overcame a bad shooting night from Smolinski and officials who gave Green Bay just about every close call. Good, vocal crowd. Any YSU fan who is free on Sunday afternoon should attend and honor these three seniors, Cash, Smolinski, and Trimmer, who have given so much to this program and this university.
-
CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT GAME BY THE YSU GIRLS! YES OUR SENIORS HAVE BEEN OUTSTANDING. THANKS TO SARAH, ALISON & MELINDA FOR STEPPING UP AND MAKING THIS AN EXCITING BASKETBALL TEAM! WE STILL HAVE SEVERAL GAMES REMAINING, SO KEEP YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND WIN SEVERAL MORE GAMES!!
-
Big game Sunday. Come out and support your seniors!
-
20 point win today and now 20 wins on the season! Awesome work ladies!
-
1600 Friday night and 1800 plus today and the men almost 5000. MUCH better
-
Also clinched a 1st round home tournament game!
-
Also clinched a 1st round home tournament game!
GREAT news!
So who saw this last few weeks of M & W BB coming? For all who said it didn't matter this was football country and win or lose who cares? I say bunk!
Pretty great for the players, coaches, school, and community!
-
20 point win today and now 20 wins on the season! Awesome work ladies!
Ditto!--Outstanding job ladies!
-
Very disappointing loss tonight...
-
Another tough loss... No depth is really killing this team.
-
Agreed. It is ridiculously difficult to play a DI basketball schedule with basically seven players. Some of our women seem to have hit a wall, but they must continue to press on because there is no alternative. Six days off now should help. If we stay as the fourth seed (third if Green Bay beats IUPUI and we beat CSU) we would play Wright State again in the semi-finals. I actually like that match-up if we draw honest officials who will call fouls on the dirtiest team in the Horizon League.
-
Watched the game. I agree with Wick 250 on the officiating. Wright State got the calls. That being said I think fatigue is setting in with us playing only 7 girls and Sarah really not able to play extended minutes. Our 3 point shooting was way down and actually cost us both games this weekend. That can be caused by fatigue and both games required lots of energy since both teams were bigger and more aggressive than us.
-
Survive and advance!
-
That game was a classic example of the cliche that states that good teams find a way to win. Way too many unforced errors made this far closer than it should have been. But chief said it best in his three word response.
Excellent crowd, especially on a Wednesday evening.
-
Key play in the game was the inbound pass with 2 seconds on the 30 clock and we get a layup and 3 point FT. They were making a run, (this was a game of runs) and that play turned the momentum. Milwaukee was a VERY physical team, strong hands, played very tough (but clean) Truth is, we loose this if played at their house. Crowd was decent size and into the game. Very enjoyable last home game for Sarah, Allison and the seniors!
-
Bad bad loss.... Choked the game away. Feel for the seniors especially Cash....
-
I had the game on at work and I felt we got outcoached. We got the lead and threw up shots with tons of time to run a play. We were in position to get the last shot but we didnt get it. Was that the best person to shoot that? I haven’t watched enough to know. Yes Cash missed an easy left handed layup that could have changed the outcome. I don’t know if it’s a choke job but we had our chances.
-
I disagree that this was a bad loss. Green Bay is so good on defense that there is pressure to execute even on otherwise easy or routine shots. A bad loss would have been quitting and rolling over when we fell behind by a dozen in the first half. We certainly did not do that. Yes, we should have won this game, and the missed opportunities will haunt the players forever. But they played very hard and I was proud of them.
We will probably make the WNIT. Don't know if we will get a home game. Personally, I would prefer the WBI where I know that we could win the whole thing.

I agree, it is very unfortunate for the seniors to bow out that way, but they played hard and game themselves a chance to win. That's all you an ask. This was a very nice team, very smart, very well coached and played HARD. Something for Youngstown to be proud of, not lament.
-
Ladies got a WNIT bid.
-
Playing at Cincinnati on Thursday.

Playing at Cincinnati on Thursday.
That's a LONG layoff for a basketball team. Either we are going to be fresh and healthy and give the Bearcats all they want, or stale. We'll see in a couple.
Good luck ladies!
-
Valiant effort ladies. Great season overall.
