YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Horizon League Tourney Seeding

As I have said all season, we just do not have a go to guy who can take over the game ( i.e. Cohill last year). We really do not deserve for the university to spend lots of $$ to buy us into another postseason game in view of the tight budget. This has been a good season and unfortunately, we didn’t peak at the right time.

We will see what we can do next year. Go Penguins, I am ready for football…

I agree 100% with this.  As good as this year's team was I never had the confidence like I did with last year's team.  And like you said, I felt that team could compete with anyone and could have been dangerous if they made the NCAA. And really how they played OSU last year showed.

This year's team just didn't have that dominating feel, couldn't win the close games, didn't have that guy to take over or bail us out.  Coach had said earlier in the week he felt like if they got in the tourney they could be dangerous and no one would want to play us, but I'm not so sure.

While we were able to win the national TV games against Wright St, getting swept by Oakland and getting beat by Green Bay & CSU at home without their 2 best players were the daggers.  Just didn't feel like we were playing the best ball down the stretch, even the wins against RMU & Detroit weren't the greatest.

Biggest game of the season and everything on the line and played the worst game of the season outside of the Michigan game...first double digit loss since that game.  It's hard to wrap your head when you consider CSU was playing their 3rd game in 6 days on the road without their best player.  YSU's last 2 home losses came without both teams' best player.

CSU outrebounded YSU 38-32, but it sure felt a lot more as they seemed to get every loose ball and hustle play went their way.  Turnovers were killer so many terrible passes.  Points off turnovers were 16-5 in favor of YSU.

5-31 from 3 that's just unimaginable.  DJ had a hell of game but was only 4-8 from the line.

To have the teams that YSU has had the last 2 years and not even make it past the semis is rough.  And that's 2 out of the last 3 years losing at home in the tourney, once to an underdog RMU and now a 10.5 underdog in CSU without their best player.

This loss just really stings.  For as much as Coach has done turning YSU basketball into a winner, it's just demoralizing to not even be able to ever get to the Horizon League title game

Just 2-13 from 3 while CSU is 5-10. That & some bad turnovers are the difference.

Any word on why Enaruna is out?

Apparently Tristan Enaruna is out for CSU thus the line going to 10.5.  Hasn't mattered yet.

According to Fan Duel as of this evening

Interesting that YSU is an 8.5 point favorite, while Oakland is only a 3.5 favorite against PFW.

Wright St is a 7.5 point favorite against NKU and Green Bay is only a 1.5 point favorite against Milwaukee.

Really like Enaruna and he was a great transfer for CSU.  His achillies heel might be his perimeter game that will more than likely make him an over the seas player. If that area gets better with time then perhaps he'll make the league.   Great at taking it to the hoop.  Like pride said he's the guy we have to slow down.

CSU has a few good knockdown 3 point shooters and the D needs to swarm to these guys.   YSU likes to get into transition and so does YSU so the no-brainer point is that the better defensive team will get the W.

His weakness is definitely his shooting.  He can take over a game inside.  Hopefully YSU can force him to take mid-range shots where he can struggle.

In YSU's last 3 losses they've given up 82, 84 & 81.  In their last 10 wins, they've held opponents to 77 or less every game other than the 2 OT games against Milwaukee.

In CSU's last 3 losses, they've only scored 73 or less.

CSU is only 5-10 on the road this year with really their only good road win to PFW by 3.

Defense is going to win the tourney.  I think if YSU can hold them to the low 70s, we'll be in good shape.

We have to contain Tristan E. To some extent.  He is a future NBA player.

He can take over games, but over the last 2 years I've seen games where he's struggled shooting the ball.

I'd be surprised if he makes the NBA.  He has averaged 20 ppg this year, but for his 5 year career he's avg 9.5 ppg, he's under 70% from the FT line, and 26% from 3.  He's avg 6.5 rebounds the last 2 years and 4.1 for his career.  He was at Kansas his 1st 2 years then at Iowa St in his 3rd year and followed his coach Danyial Robinson to CSU.

I expect a big crowd, not sure if it'll be as big as last year's 5584 crowd.  While the crowds have been good all year, they haven't seemed as big as last year's.  Not sure if it was just the newness of having such a great team, first national home TV game, coming off a regular season championship, and then of course the NIT game.

I'm sure the fact that it's CSU instead of PFW will bring in more CSU people.  It's also somewhat of a break for CSU because they played at home Saturday and of course last night and then the short travel. I think it would have been a lot harder if say they had to travel on Saturday and then a further travel to YSU.

I hope the week off for YSU isn't a detriment.  I'm worried we come out sluggish on offense, but hopefully we can play good defense and feed off the crowd.

Is this not the best possible bracket for YSU?  Barring an unlikely first round upset, to reach the championship game Oakland would need to beat Fort Wayne at home and probably Wright State in Indianapolis. We would need to get through Cleveland at home and then Milwaukee/Green Bay on the neutral court.

All-League selections are now out. Burns and Reid made second team, Thompson was third team, and Dynes was on the All-freshman team. Burns and Dynes also made the all-defensive team.

Slap in the face to Burns and YSU. How do you AVERAGE a double-double; record a double-double in 16 of the 20 league games, make the all-defensive team, and NOT earn a spot on the league first team?

The semis are reseeded as well so if Milwaukee wins in the first 2 rounds and Oakland wins in the quarters, they would be playing them not YSU.

Though YSU hasn't played GB with Reynolds, I'd much rather see YSU play GB than either Wright St or NKU. I think it could be tough for YSU to beat WS 3 times. And I think the same could be said for Oakland beating YSU 3 times.  NKU has had a lot of success in the tourney.

Of note with NKU, they already lost Sam Vinson earlier in the season due to injury now I see Cade Meyer left the program and Keeyan Itejere is injured.  Those 3 combined to avg 26 points.

I'd rather us playing CSU instead of PFW.  We smashed them at home whereas we lost to pfw on the road and barely beat them at home.  Cleveland st is a good match up for us.  Just my thoughts

Yes, I also prefer to play CSU. Not only that we have already beaten them at home this season, PFW was ranked near #50 in NET in the beginning of the season. However, having said that, playing PFW at YSU would eliminate the possibility of facing them in their home court later in the tournament.

I considered the regular season results are for tournament seeding only. Any of the top 6 teams who “peaked at the right time” are capable of winning the whole thing and join the big dance.

I don’t even think any other team in this league will even be considered for the NIT. There are plenty more power 5 teams left to be selected for the NIT bringing in higher revenue than the mid major teams.

Indiana Farmers Coliseum is IUPUI's home court not PFW.  It's 2 hours and 15 mins from PFW.

Yeah I tend to agree on the NIT. I don't think any team would have a strong enough resume to even be considered.  For YSU it probably would have needed wins against Louisiana and Dayton, at least wins against Oakland and Green Bay at home, maybe another road win or two, and a loss in the title game of the tourney to even have a remote shot.

It will be interesting though if a lot of the teams that get selected for the NIT bail out.

Here is the bracket https://horizonleague.org/documents/2023/8/25/2024_Men_s_Basketball_Bracket_8_25_23.pdf

With YSU getting the #2 seed, the only thing that is certain is we won't play the winner of Milwaukee/Detroit.

Most likely it would appear YSU will be playing CSU.

The only way YSU would play IUPUI is if BOTH Detroit and IUPUI win and we all know the chances of that happening.

If Detroit OR IUPUI wins, then YSU would get the winner of PFW/Robert Morris.

The one thing at least about being the #2 seed is if there is an upset in the first round and that team then could knock off Oakland then YSU would be the beneficiary getting to play them.

Watch out for PFW i tournament.  They are playing great ball right now.  GreenBay not playing well.

They have won 4 of 5, but 2 of those wins were to Detroit and Robert Morris, they did win at Wright St by 2 and at Green Bay comfortably without Reynolds.

I prefer to play CSU at home. UWM played us tough this year and PFW is a very talented and dangerous team (they had a net ranking of 52 in the beginning of the season).

I would agree with that.  PFW is 152 in the net now, CSU 203 and Milwaukee at 241.  If Milwaukee loses at home to GB they will drop event more.  YSU dropped 4 spots to 128 after their Detroit win.  I just looked at they were 127 last year.
