YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 2019 YSU FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
« on: January 16, 2019, 03:52:53 PM »
We are not playing five league games at home and three on the road.  Whoever assembled that schedule made a typing error.  The UNI game is on the road, and not an especially favorable place to start the league schedule.
You are correct Wick. I apologize for the mistake. It is fixed.

I recently spoke to YSU Athletic Director Ron Strollo on status of FB Coach Bo Pelini. Strollo told me, “I fully expect Coach Pelini to return. He’s recruiting and we’ll address his contract at the appropriate time.” Pelini’s contract expires in February.

“For those scrutinizing YSU for offering Mark Waid late, I’m told by sources they’ve been talking to him since the end of the 2017 high school season, which was his junior season. Perhaps some unfair criticism!!”

YSU Penguin Athletics / Joe Malmisur

Condolences to the Malmisur family.

The Youngstown State Athletic Department mourns the loss of former Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Malmisur, who passed away on Saturday evening. Malmisur, who was YSU's Athletic Director for 11 years, was 89 years old.

Malmisur, a native of Youngstown and graduate of East High School, served as the Athletic Director at Youngstown State from July 1, 1983 through June 30, 1994.

His dedication to Youngstown State University didn't stop when he left his position as athletic director. He worked as the Director of the Penguin Club and served on the University Development Council upon leaving his athletic-director post.

He was always a familiar and friendly face around the Athletic Department and was highly involved in the success of the Penguin Club. He was honored as the 2005 Penguin of the Year and was enshrined into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995 for his contributions.

He is survived by his wife, Olga D., are their children, Joseph and Martha, and eight grandchildren.

Malmisur helped shape the athletic program in numerous ways during his tenure.

In his early career, he watched as the Penguins were competitive in the Ohio Valley Conference. The men's basketball program came within an eyelash of making the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1985 losing in the conference tournament final. Youngstown State lost a heartbreaker, 66-63 at Middle Tennessee State that year. The football program won a conference title in 1987.

Following the 1987-88 athletic year, the Penguins left the Ohio Valley Conference to serve as an independent in all sports until 1992. In 1992, Youngstown State's sports programs - except football - joined the Mid-Continent Conference. YSU would be affiliated with the Mid-Con until May 2001. The football program remained as an FCS/Division I-AA Independent during his tenure.

Prior to the 1986 football season, he made the shrewd move of hiring then-Ohio State assistant coach Jim Tressel to take over the Youngstown State football program. In 1987, the Penguins made the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time. In 1989, YSU won its first FCS postseason game, and in 1990, it rolled through the regular season unbeaten in 11 games.

In 1991, the Penguins won their first National Championship beating Marshall 25-17. That capped an improbable end to the season as YSU won eight straight games on its way to the title. In 1992, YSU reached the National Championship Game coming up three points short at Marshall. In 1993, the Penguins won it all again in Malmisur's final year as athletic director posting a 13-2 record and beating the Thundering Herd 17-5 on their home turf.

Off the field, Malmisur created an Athletic Academic Counseling Center for YSU student-athletes, which resulted in one of the most successful graduation rates for student-athletes that still continues today at YSU. He hired full-time academic advisers and purchased computers to provide a study area for student-athletes.

He worked to increase department revenues to accommodate a self-supporting scholarship system and to cover all department expenditures. He created the YSU Scholarship/Ring Dinner, which has been used to raise funds for championship rings for all YSU teams and salutes a Penguin of the Year annually.

He was involved as a coach or administrator for more than 50 years, having coached championship teams on the collegiate and high school level.

A local legend, his impact is felt on the number of Hall of Fames he has been inducted to. In 1991, he was enshrined in the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame and in 1992 he was elected to the East High School Hall of Fame. In 1994, he was named a YWCA Youngstown Man of the Year.

Before coming to Youngstown State in 1983, he was the head football coach at Hiram for 14 seasons. Malmisur was an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and served as a fund raiser and recruiter for the school as well.

He began his professional career upon being discharged from the service as an assistant football coach, head track and field coach and assistant Dean of Men at his alma mater, Heidelberg College.

He was the head football coach at Wellston (Ohio) High School where he coached the Golden Rockets through the 1958 season. His next high school head coaching experience was at Lima (Ohio) High School from the 1960 through 1968 campaign.

On the collegiate level, he served as the head football coach at both Heidelberg and Hiram until 1982, leading the Terriers to a President's Athletic Championship in 1981. He was also a past president of the Football Coaches Association for the Ohio Athletic Conference and the PAC. He was also a District V representative of the American Football Coaches Association.

Malmisur received a degree in education from Heidelberg in 1951 and later earned a master's degree from Bowling Green State University.

At East High School, he was a three-sport athlete lettering in football, baseball and basketball. He was offered a contract at one point in his baseball career by the St. Louis Browns.

SAMFORD, YOUNGSTOWN STATE TO MEET AT 2019 GUARDIAN CREDIT UNION FCS KICKOFF
September 25, 2018

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Samford University and Youngstown State University will open the 2019 college football season at the Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the historic Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala. The kickoff time will be announced at a later date by ESPN.

The 2019 season will mark the third straight season the FCS Kickoff will be held in Montgomery.  In 2017, Jacksonville State defeated Chattanooga, 27-13. Last year, North Carolina A&T defeated Jacksonville State 20-17.  Samford will be the third straight team from the state of Alabama to participate in the event.

“We are thrilled to be selected for the 2019 Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff game and open FCS football nationally,” Samford Director of Athletics Martin Newton said. “This is a great platform for us to showcase Samford, the university’s mission and the quality of our Bulldog football program to a national audience against a quality opponent.”

The FCS Kickoff is in its sixth year overall.  The event began in 2014 when Eastern Washington defeated Sam Houston State 56-35 at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash.  In 2015, Montana knocked off defending FCS champion North Dakota State 38-35 at Grizzly Stadium in Missoula.  In 2016, North Dakota State defeated Charleston Southern 24-17 at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.

“Taking part in the 2019 Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff is a special honor and something we are looking forward to next fall,” Youngstown State Director of Athletics Ron Strollo said. “Everyone throughout the country watches the opening game of the season and it will be fun for our program to take center stage nationally along with Samford.”

Samford, who had a narrow loss at Florida State on Sept. 8, has been to the FCS Playoffs each of the last two seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher.  Overall, Samford has made five playoff appearances in school history.

“It is a great honor to be selected to play in next year’s Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff game,” Hatcher said. “We are excited about the opportunity to play such a quality opponent in Montgomery.  It is a great venue that will bring lots of national attention to our team and university.”

Youngstown State is a perennial power at the FCS level. The Penguins have made 14 NCAA Playoff appearances and have won four FCS National Championships.  YSU won national championships in 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1997, all under former head coach Jim Tressel, who currently serves as the school’s President. YSU lost in the 2016 FCS National Championship Game to James Madison.

“Our football program is excited to take part in the 2019 Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff,” YSU head coach Bo Pelini said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase Youngstown State football on a national stage and we look forward to playing Samford in our 2019 opener at the historic Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.”

The 2019 Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff will be the fifth all-time meeting between Samford and Youngstown State. YSU has won all four of the previous meetings.

Bo was asked in his weekly press conference today about Hunter’s eligibility to be medically redshirted he stated that they were going to start actively pursuing the idea. No timeline was given as to when we should know if he indeed will be redshirted or not.

Could Hunter be back next year?  Basically our season is over and if he only has played 6 quarters can they redshirt him?  He appears to be the best we have & SM loves him.

There are 4 rules regarding a medical redshirt one it must be suffered in season two must be a season ending injury third the injury must occur prior to the second half of the season fourth the injured player can not compete in thirty percent or three games of the season (whichever is greater). So as to if Hunter is eligible for a medical redshirt it depends on how they count the game time because he played the whole game at pitt less than half the game vs Robert Morris and about 5 minutes vs South Dakota State so how they determine his playing time will be the factor that determines his eligibility

How many Bison fans are headed this way ?
The guy from NDSU who Hannon talked to on Penguin Playbook said that he expects 400-500 Bison fans to make the trip. Similar to the crowd they brought to Indiana State last Saturday.

This football team is capable of a 9 win season. Those 9 wins all hinge on the ability of our defense to get stops. This defense doesn't have to be the best we have ever seen just play complimentary football. As for the playoffs no doubt we are in and there is potential for a deep playoff run and trip to Frisco. However to get there we are going to need a little help from the selection committee and some luck. It is more likely that this year we win one or two playoff games, but after last year I learned "never say never" and I think this football team and the coaching staff can pull it off again! So yes if all goes well we could very well see another trip to Frisco!

They did bring it up during the press conference some of Bo's quotes "we aren't going to talk about it" and "now that we are having success now all the sudden there is a story" " There was one young man who I didn't play in a game halfway through the game and nobody reported it" quotes are from Charles Grove.
