With 4 players transferring I thought we would have noise as of today. Last year we signed 4 on spring signing day. Anyone hear anything ?
-
According to Verbal Commits:
Recent Activity
None
-
No activity? What can we distill from that?
(1) The coach is recruiting candidates who are off the grid. Chances for success in that environment are not good.
(2) The coach is exploring DI transfers.
(3) The coach is considering offering scholarships to incumbent walk-ons.
Near term help is not on the way in any of those scenarios or combinations of scenarios.
-
NLI last day Is May 15th so maybe players and coaches are working out their options. Coach C has four openings and there are five offers(one juco) that verbal.com reports. Of those five none have committed yet.
Analyzing the other programs in the Horizon you will see that everyone or most everyone has openings too. CSU and Oakland signed a player each two days ago. Worst case scenario is we get no one and go with eight returning plus Jamir Thomas and scholarship a few walkons and load up for 2020. Don't see this option happening since injuries can really decimate a season as we slugged it out when missing Naz and Covington last season.
Coach C might have been born at night but he wasn't born last night. I think he'll have this worked out despite my impatience.
-
Patience. A couple visitors have been to and or are coming to campus.
-
Anyone have any scoop on any potential players ready to sign . Seems odd we haven't gotten one this signing period.
-
Christian Bentley, a 6-3 guard from Iowa Western CC has committed.
-
Bentley averaged 12 pts a game and led Iowa Western in assists. Played one year prior at Sienna.
-
video looks fine, but he doesn't look anywhere close to 6'3" More like 5-9 or 5-10 at best, and we could use a 6-3 guard.
-
Next Monday the 15th is the end of the spring signing period so there should be some movement. I noticed players that YSU offered have committed elsewhere but that will happen most of the time and every team in the conference gets the same type of knocks. The trouble with recruiting in 2019 is that you get excited for the new players and then they're in the transfer portal because they didn't get the playing time after one season.
The word EARN has become a four letter word in today's college sports.

Truer words couldn't be spoken on the subject. You are right on the money.

Tomorrow is the signing day and the YSU official web site posted the article above . Do we read into it that we're done although there are three openings ? There are a couple of names on verbalcommit.com that we are in on that have not committed but I'm not feeling confident. Hope i'm wrong !
I noticed that Wright State signed two today and with the exception Of Detroit and N Kentucky everyone else is full. Detroit as of tonight has six openings. They are also the only D1 university that is ineligible for the post season since their APR is below the standard.
NKU just had a coaching change late which puts them in a scramble situation . They have four spots to fill as of tonight.
-
Good news! 2 transfers today:
Kyle Scadlock, a 6-6 forward from D3 Williams College has committed. From Twinsburg area and played high school ball at University School.
Tyler Foster, a 6-5 guard from East Carolina is also coming in. He has to sit a year. Once was a Georgetown commit.
-
Trying to process the two new members.
Would Tyler Scadlock be a walkon ? he averaged 13.7 pts a game playing D3 .
Foster averaged 4 pts a game at ECU. Was rated a 3 star coming out of HS .
To answer my own question on Scadlock. He was listed as a senior on Williams college roster so I'm thinking he's a graduate transfer.

Interesting takes on Foster from the ECU board. Consensus appears that the posters like Foster's potential. Nice pick up Coach Calhoun.
-
Foster looks like a good find for us. I think Thomas looks real good as well. Overall a good class with experience as well
-
Solid additions in my eyes.
-
Sounds like fillers for open roster spots to me.
-
where is the big guy whom we need to get our inside game going?
-
where is the big guy whom we need to get our inside game going?
Doubt this offense will ever really have a true inside big guy.

Our opponents will position their zone 25' out (or at least to the 3 point line).
It is amazing to me that, on May 17, we are still talking about MBB instead of football.
-
Seems like more upside with the basketball program than the football program. Street and Smith magazine has YSU football team picked last. Yikes
-
For the last three decades, we have had one "big man" that was worth anything. Eargle, who returned home. Other mid-major programs can recruit a quality 6'8"' or 6'9"" post. We can't. Why? Don't give me any nonsense about the campus. It is now beautiful with quality apartment complexes going up every year. Next year, Barnes will be able to rotate three "big girls," a 6"3"" senior, 6"4"" junior, and 6"2" freshman. All middle class white women who seem to have no problem with our campus or living accommodations. Yet our men's coaches can't lure a single big man here.
-
We have three Big men.
1.Jamir Thomas 6-8 well over 250 lbs. Look at his video he's a load.
2. Olamide Pedersen is 6-9 and struggled as a frosh but showed potential as rim protector.
3. John Salley is 6-11. I know he's a walk on but coach got him in the program and he gave some decent minutes last season and hopefully he'll continue to improve.
4. Coach Slocum had 6-10 Bobby Hain and 7-0 Jorden Kaufman.
I get that everyone wants a big man in the middle as do I. Give me 5 Naz Bohannon (perimeter shooting improved) with that type of heart and you can keep all your big men.
-
John Vargo posted on twitter that Tyler Foster is eligible this season so no sitting out.

Yes. Big news!

Good news indeed. Does anyone have any clue of where our non-conference basketball schedule is like for this upcoming season? I know about the home game with West Virginia or what else?

New Penguin
This is a nice pick-up. Great size for a PG and provides depth and flexibility behind Quiz. Not a earth shattering class, but nice additions. Most of improvement will come from continuing development of hold overs, but added some nice depth.
-
I believe it's a good class. Thomas can play and will suprise us and foster is a D1 transfer. Both will vie for starting spot. Our starting 5 returns in a few bench players expect the season to be much improved. The 12 wins we had this year should be 17 wins next year.
-
The problem with D1 transfers is most of them thought they could play at the D1 lever and found out they can't. I know I'm changing sports but you need to look only as far as Louis Irizarry and and recently Kierre Hawkins for guys who were hot shot TE recruits at no less than OSU and found out they couldn't play at that lever, dropped back to YSU, and found out they couldn't pay here either. I'm not a big fan of transfers looking for an easier path.
We have out point guard in Quiz, so Qgoro becomes another shooting guard who is at best a marginal shooter.
Foster, the East Carolina transfer is listed as a "shooting guard" who hit .186% from 3 last year. Quiz is a driver/ slasher, so is Foster and Ogoro. Shooting and D killed us last year, frankly I don't seem much improvement, Althought Foster and Ogoro have nice size for guards, which couldn't hurt.
-
Kierre tore his ACL last year so I wouldn't say that is relevant lol.
-

Yes he got hurt, but before he did he played 2 games and caught, what was the total...........oh year, 1 pass. To paraphrase the great Harry Doyle, "one God-damn pass!"
Drop him off and add Trent Hosick or any of dozens of guys over the years. There have been some good ones too, Avery Moss and Justus Reed among them, but you gotta see 'em play first! My point is because somebody transfers "down" to YSU it doesn't mean they can play for us.

Luke Chicone 5-10 pt guard from Metor verbals for 2021.

Sophomore highlights. Looks like he has off the bus range.

The Bobby K connection. He is a little small but has good range on the 3 ball.

Kid has NBA range but middle school size. They list him at 5-10, but in video he couldn't have been much over 5-6 5-7
-
maybe he will grow some more before he gets to YSU
-
Only going into his junior year. Coach loves this kid.
-
Kid still has 2 years. A lot can happen till when and if he honors his commitment. But I think it’s a good get by our coach.
-
Luke was the best player on his team as a sophomore that went 22-3. Mentor is one of the largest HS in Ohio and plays a tough D1 schedule. His skill set is way ahead of his physical size but he has plenty of time to fill out.
Coach C has both the team camp and an individual camp that gives YSU nice exposure. Love seeing Ohio kids coming to Ytown.
-
Watched Luke play last year in Mentor's State Championship run. Don't know much about the game but this kid really stood out among the others. Very quick on his feet, great anticipation and outstanding 3-point range shooting. Nice pick-up for the Penguins!

Doesn't need to "fill out" he needs to "fill UP!"
-
Kid looks very small, that is obvious, but kids quite a bit shorter than him have had great NBA careers, so it certainly isn't hopeless. Just harder if you're short. I'd much rather have a short guy that can really play than a tall kid who couldn't. It would be nicer if the guy was 6' is all.
-
I was just reading the MBB roster and John Sally (our 7-1 center last season) was not listed. Does any one know what has happened to him? He started several games late last season. We have so many guards on the roster this year (only 4 are listed as forward).
-
Salley left the program. Kane-Johnson also decided to give up basketball.
-
Disappointed that these two are leaving. Wondering if they thought they would be on scholarship this year and seeing a D3 recruit come in and get one might of led to some uneasiness.
-
Salley left the program. Kane-Johnson also decided to give up basketball.
I can understand Kane-Johnson leaving since there are 11 guards listed on the roster. But, Salley would have been the only center on the team (unless he didn't get a scholarship).

Salley was tall, but did you ever watch him play? Calhoun's style and John Salley's style were a complete mismatch.
-
I kind of wondered if there was going to be any room for Cameron Kane-Johnson. He was certainly impressive at Westminster, I was looking forward to seeing him get a shot at D1 level, but not sure how he would do over the course of the season.
-
Kyle scadlock not on roster as well.

Since he transferred in from D-3, does he have to sit out for a year?

He was a senior last season. Perhaps it has to do with whether he graduated from Williams college. I'm just speculating.

Guys filming clips don't help much. Kid is 6-8 so I assume he can dunk, but doesn't show one clip of rebounding technique, defensive ability and only a couple jump shots (form looks very clean). We need some size and a senior year should be worth 10-20 lbs. which he could use. Nice pick up.

Cheick Traore 6-8 216 lbs of Concord NC commits.

That little guard for the team wearing orange is kind of a slow learner! He got stuffed about 6 times on the exact same drive into the lane against Traore!

3 ball is kind of a push shot, jumper from inside has elbows flying all over the place. Release on 3 is quick enough, but pretty low. We'll have to see. A 6-5 SG that can hit consistently should have a fine career running with Quis.
-
I think Traore has deceptive wing length and will be a rim protector. Didn't see an explosive leaper but a guy who will work his behind off . runs the floor well. D is way ahead of his offense at this time.
Correct on Hunter having what looks to be a push shot. He looks like he can stroke it from three well and take you off the dribble. Nice pick ups.

The Penguins posted the 2020 - 2021 basketball roster recently on the YSU website. Cheick Traore, 6-8, 216 lbs, of Concord, NC, an early signee, was not on it.
Anyone have insight?

I saw that last week and was wondering the same thing. Hope i'm wrong but that is usually not a good sign.

Cheick is enrolled and on campus with the team. No worries.

Great, we have a recruiting class that is about 80% guards, we need some size and anybody who's name is Shake opens up tons of creative headlines and quips! Cheick Traore is kind of hard to track on the internet, since there is a pro soccer player named Cheick Traore too!

My math might be off. Did coach just offer a 7th grader ?

5/8 160 is pretty small, but he has YEARS to grow and develop!! His Verbal Commit's video is actually from 6 grade!! In all fairness, he is the best 6th grader I've seen in a while!

Big man is in.
-
Marcus is Coach Sonny Johnson"s youngest son, brother of O State commit Meechie Johnson. Offering this early is playing a loyalty card and that's something Coach Sonny understands. It could payoff big in 6 years . It's worth the effort.

No way this kid is coming to YSU, but not bad publicity.

I don’t get this. He graduates from HS 5 years from now. In the next 5 years, if JC was successful, he would probably be gone and if he was unsuccessful, he would definitively be gone. In either scenario, the kid would not be here if he remains a 2 stars or better.

Interesting takes on Foster from the ECU board. Consensus appears that the posters like Foster's potential. Nice pick up Coach Calhoun.
Prep school video is great. Was 6-6 in HS now 6-5! Must have shrunk? Anyway, with this kid and Josh Irwin we have wing shooters with some nice size. Not sure who gets rebounds, but we should be fine with the drive kick and shoot game for as long as DQ stays around!

This kid plays football like a 6'7" power forward. Great "rebounder" in the FB field as well as BB court!
Would be a major signing IF signed!
