YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Wright State at YSU

“it was though we stood and watched in transition,” said WSU coach Billy Donlon of the deciding spurt. “You can’t, against them, or against anyone really, allow what happens on offense to affect your defense. They’re too fast.”

you are quite right Indy, i just wanted people to realize the MAC is not that bad. i am for staying where we are, pressing the conference to drop one conference game requirement lower, and offer 1 & ones to any MAC team that will disobey the conference.

As my father would say "OUTSTANDING". UDM is not cooperating with us tonight though. They had a huge lead and CSU came back & went up big themselves.

YSUGO....really?  REALLY??  What rivalry does Akron or Kent or any other MAC team bring to YSU?  NONE.  They both SUCK and have sucked for years....that's not a rivalry my friend.  Why do you think neither of them will schedule YSU?  Because they already suck and the fact of a loss every year to an FCS team would make them suck even more!!!!  Our fans don't come out enough as it is; you honestly think they would come to watch Akron or Kent?  OK, OK, maybe the first year or 2.  I would much rather play for a championship than the Clorox Toilet Bowl (as appropriately named above).

Soup ..there is NO team in I-AA that is more important to beat than Akron ...hands down, Granted I am over 40yrs old and that has something to do with it. Yet if you attend many YSU football games ...I am barely middle-aged compared to the regulars. All of which hate Akron as much as I do. Imagine being able to have Marshall, Akron, Kent, Pitt, UMASS, BG, UT, OU on the schedule every year? How about 5-ESPN games per year (if we make the championship, and go to a bowl). To regress a bit ..."totally awesome dude".

So they 'suck', well how many people in the US know NDSU is is any good? How many people could sit in the stands next year ( renegotiated, so it is an away game) right here in the Ice Castle, and will not know they are the defending national champs? If you say anything more than half, you are wrong. Football in at YSU is a tradition ...a form of entertainment.

Yes, and many "regular people" like that personality. I attend many football practices, and he is always there showing a young kid how to do something (and not just basketball). He stands at the entrance of football games and helps hand out the weekly give-a-ways. I don't see other coaches doing this. You will even see him at baseball games.

Sure he spars with the media, most of the time it is funny. Unfortunately he does not have the W/L record, or tenure, of a JoePA (who was just as bad or worse with the media), to let it slide. However, I have never heard any negativity from players.

so are these tied together? Obstruction of official business usually means they hindered an investigation, and/or refused to assist, such as not allowing entrance into a home, or not answering questions.

I see your point Pita. However, two wins could give us a seed in the tourney. Also, Saturday is senior day ...I want Brooks and Ward to know how much we appreciate them.

I do not agree with you Pride. You act as though anything below YSU is "chicken feed", and coach S' record at Gannon can just be dismissed. Not so.  You do not have the big-time players there, yet he could recruit. We already went through a coach that had a resume at a bigger basketball school, and what did it get us? ...nothing. Waters was a gamble at CSU ...a coach they cannot afford & questionable resume. Slocum is the type of person that you need to help bring long-term success to a program like ours. Before Slocum, when were you able to listen to a coach comment about some of the prep players tourney's, and some kids that he saw? When did we receive invites to the summer Pitt camp?

I do not want this to become a football thread, but think about this. Had coach H remained at HC/DC, the $$$ were invested and YSU brought in coach Monty at OC ...where would we be right now? Two lessons with this story:

1. Do not discount the $$$ invested in a program. Over $250k each brought us a lousy DC, and a great OC. In the mean time, a good DC in Restkis (who worked at YSU for about 1/5 of Kravitz salary) went to Miami. So as the university invests more in basketball ...the court, the lockers, weight rooms, etc.  we are seeing results.

2. You asked if any of us would keep a person with a mediocre record, comparing it to the business world? Well, as an administrator in the business world, I would understand what Slocum was hired into, what it is now. I see that his contract is due, and there has been marked improvements. Now, the smart admin asks the coach what caused the success, what caused the lack of success in years past (even before coach S was hired-in), and what is he going to do to keep this success going (and growing), and what can you (the coach) and I (the university) do to help you achieve this success, and prevent us from going back to a less successful environment?

If coach S has some good ideas, and we (YSU admin) can offer him the support that he requests ...he has a new contract (longer than 1-year). The alternative is self-explanatory.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State junior catcher Vicky Rumph (Mount Forest, Ontario, Canada) has been named Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, while Penguins sophomore Casey Crozier (Valparaiso, Ind.) has earned Horizon League Softball Pitcher of the Week honors, for the week of Feb. 13-19.

The battery helped Youngstown State turn in a 2-1 record as the Penguins opened the season at the Spartan Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. Rumph hit .556 in the three games, turning in an OPS of 1.600 as the Penguins collected wins over UNC-Wilmington and Howard. Crozier appeared in two games on the rubber, winning both.

Going 5-for-9 across the three games, collecting hits in YSU's 6-1 win against UNC-Wilmington and in a 4-0 shutout at the hands of USC-Upstate. The junior saved her finest game for YSU's 15-7 victory over Howard, turning in a 3-for-3 effort with a home run, double and three runs scored.

Crozier started only one game in the tournament, hurling a complete game two-hitter against UNC-Wilmington. The right-hander notched eight of her 10 strikeouts in the tournament in that contest. Entering in the third inning against Howard, Crozier collected the win with three innings of work. The sophomore allowed just one unearned run on the week, allowing opponents to hit just .135.

Youngstown State will head to Greensboro, N.C., this week, taking part in the North Carolina A&T Tournament on Feb. 24-26. The Penguins will meet Utah Valley State and host NCA&T on Friday before single games against Marist and Western Carolina on Saturday and Sunday.

I think he a good game manager. He is prepared to play the teams faces ...positioning etc. He takes the talent that he has and makes the most of it. Yes, this should not be a consideration, but he $imply a great coaching value.

Well guys and gals ...we must win one of these last two, and they are at home. UDM is scary. WSU always plays real hard and we have a tough time keeping-up (or pulling ahead). One thing we do need ...ATTENDANCE!!

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State men’s basketball team has played 16 of its 27 games on the road.

The Penguins are coming off road trips to Green Bay and Clarksville, Tenn.

Their starters are averaging 30 or more minutes per game and only one of their seven reserves has scored in the double digits this season. (And that only happened once, when sophomore Nate Perry scored exactly 10 against Toledo on Dec. 17).

But when asked if they’re a tired team — mentally or physically — both sophomore guard Kendrick Perry and head coach Jerry Slocum said no.

“I don’t think we’re tired,” said Perry, whose team lost road games to Green Bay (71-65) and Austin Peay (71-68) last week. “It’s just, we need those couple stops. Those past couple games, we didn’t get those stops when we needed it.

“We’re not a team to make excuses for ourselves, so I don’t think our guys are tired, it’s just mental lapses when we didn’t need them.”

YSU (14-13, 9-7 Horizon) opened camp in mid-October and Slocum said the grind of the season, combined with the excitement of the March tournament, make February a difficult month for every team, not just his.

“February’s a hard month,” Slocum said. “If you look around the country, you can see it everywhere. Very few teams play good during this stretch.

“All of that to say, I think our guys are fairly fresh. I’m not saying last week wasn’t a long or hard week. [But] I don’t think we played poorly. Actually, I think we played pretty good.”

The good news is, YSU finishes the regular season with two home games: Thursday against Wright State and Saturday against Detroit. The Penguins split with the teams in early December, beating the Titans 64-61 before squandering a 17-point second half lead in a 63-62 loss to the Raiders.

A win over Wright State (13-16, 7-9) would give YSU wins over eight of its nine league opponents. (Butler was the only team to sweep the Penguins.)

“I think they’re the hardest-working basketball team in the league,” Slocum said of Wright State.

“They work hard every possession.”

When the Titans (12-4, 10-6) lost to YSU earlier in the year, they were without suspended center Eli Holman and had just lost senior forward Nick Minnerath to a season-ending ACL injury.

Holman returned a few weeks later and the Titans have played as well as anyone in the Horizon League lately, winning five straight and eight of nine.

“They’re the most talented group in the league, hands down,” Slocum said of Detroit. Now whether they end up playing together, well, that’s one thing. But they’re a good basketball team.”

A win this week would give the Penguins a first-round home game in the Horizon League tournament, which begins Feb. 28.

Tired or not, that would be a huge boost for the Penguins, who have only hosted a tournament game twice before.

“Once you get into the playoffs, obviously it’s a one-and-done and you have to play your heart out,” Slocum said. “We’re capable. If we can get to that neutral site, we’ve shown we can beat anybody in our league.”
